Are rape jokes EVER okay?

I dont like rape jokes, but thats because I feel like people who do that are the lowest forms on earth; right next to racist and child molestors; that just me though..
Which is why the celebration of rape is so disturbing-- No matter who the victim is or what they did to "deserve" it. Rape is not a form of justice.

The reality of it is if your a good comedian with a solid delivery you can pretty much make anything funny. Richard Pryor comes to mind. You pretty much were gonna laugh at whatever he talked about cause he was that good. You didn't think how controversial the topic was cause your too busy laughing and trying to find some kind of truth within what he's talking about.

As far as jokes, it's all in the execution and the target.

There is no way a joke celebrating or advocating rape can ever be okay. I think a lot of these jokes about people being raped in prison fall into that category-- I laughed before but it was out of ignorance.

I think rape can be a part of a good joke, like the Carlin "rape can be funny" routine that was really about free speech and not rape. But when the actual humor is supposed to be found in a raping, like the Family Guy jokes, I still don't see how that's any different from joking about lynching or "Trayvoning"-- just nasty, evil shit.

I think we've all laughed at a joke that if you had time to sit back in another setting you'll be like that's not cool to laugh at in general. Handicap jokes come to mind.

Shit makes me hit em with the side eyeo_O white man been raping ere body for ages though! Ol pasty bastards!

I would find a joke with Hitler being raped by a gang of gay Jews, or a Jihadist Homicide bomber going to "Heaven" and finding out the 72 virgins are all Catholic priests funny as hell. That's just me.

What about a man getting raped by a donkey joke ?

I don't think rape is funny. At all. But on the other hand i believe in freedom of speech too. You're going to be offended about things. But that shouldn't really stop someone from speaking.

But then i can say what i like about not liking it as well. I don't get what's funny about the violation of another human being. It's a horrible thing how i see it.

Thought about this in the course of defending jokes about the Dwight Howard rape allegations.

you know whats funny (by funny I mean fucked up) people say they dont wanna know and why do LGBTLMNOP keep insisting on flaunting it in our faces :furious::pain: then turn around and say "just say your gay!"

Dwight didnt put this out there...SOMEONE ELSE DID..very likely to blackmail him and ruin in his life if the details are exposed and everyone is playing directly into it..:smh::smh::smh:

Whats happening to Dwight Howard is really no different than whats happening to Jonathan Majors.

Both had an interaction they clearly regret now with people who probably have some kind of fucked up agenda

Both are accused and being sued/tried for assaults' of some sort.

Both career's and personal reps are adversely affected.

Disney Pulled A Jonathan Majors Film From Its Schedule Amidst His Ongoing Court Case

Earlier this year, the acclaimed actor was arrested in New York City after an alleged incident with his then-girlfriend Grace Jabbari that turned violent. According to the allegations, the two were in a taxi cab when Jabbari saw a text message sent to Majors that read, “Wish I was kissing you right now.” After Jabbari grabbed his phone, Majors allegedly violently pried the phone from her hands, twisting her forearm and causing what was described as “substantial pain.” He’s also been accused of hitting her right ear, resulting in a laceration. Majors was subsequently charged with strangulation, assault, and harassment

Majors has denied the allegations, claiming it was Jabbari who attacked him.

The actor's bodybuilding drama, "Magazine Dreams," has been yanked indefinitely by the Mouse House ... which was due to release this flick under its Searchlight Pictures subsidiary in early December. As of now, though, the film's release date has been moved to "unset."

The only difference is while BOTH their worlds are burning down around them....NO ONE is clowning Jonathan for his shit.
While I'm obviously pro-LGBT equality, I do think there's a humorous element to the Dwight situation where there was nothing funny about the Majors domestic violence incident or allegation (which I have not kept up enough with to know which is considered the more appropriate word) as I understand it.

The idea of big brolic Dwight committing sexual assault by giving oral sex is just so counter to what we think of as sexual assault....

I take issue with the hateful anti-gay stuff (people in here calling him "a sick homo" :smh: ) but I do see some room for humor as well.
didnt dave address something like that???

cued

I thought about Carlin’s “Rape can be funny” set when I was responding, didn’t think of Dave’s but they pair well together!

H/t @geechiedan on connecting that to this clip:

You ever see the early Richard Pryor set about his experience with sexual assault?

This is the Chappelle clip that was shared in this thread, @geechiedan
I'll agree that they are a hypocrite. It's not fake outrage and I think you should agree based on what you wrote but it is hypocritical and wrong. There is a difference.

I thought the Dave Chappelle clip Pack Rat posted was funnier the second time I viewed it. I think it's all about context and there's nothing wrong with deconstructing why a joke is or is not funny or why it is or is not okay.

Even though I thought it was funny, I'd have no problem with someone attacking Dave Chappelle for that clip and raising awareness about male rape. I didn't know before this conversation that the majority of rape victims in this country are male and I think it's worthy of consideration.

Dave quit his show-- rightly, in my mind-- over his own jokes crossing the line so I think he could respect that.

I do. I also believe in redemption and teachable moments. As you correctly stated, there is some feminist hypocrisy on the rape issue. The proper expression of offense may educate some people. Of course, not everyone is as reachable as others.

There are societal standards, though. Google "nigger jokes" and, while they're protected by free speech, not prosecutable, not objectively wrong, and obviously have an audience based on the sheer number of them, they're out of the mainstream and nobody is going to chalk that up to personal sensibilities and different temperaments.

Reminds me of a time I was hanging out with my wife and her friend watching TV and smoking way too much weed.

They made a comment about a pretty woman on the screen. I toked and in a sleazy french/Eastern European accent I said "Da. She geeetz da raping."

Passed the blunt. My wife pointed to a handsome man "Da Da... He geetz da raping"

Her friend took a hit and turned to my wife "but what if we geeeve him da raping together? Sneak in zee bushes.... When he geetz close jump out and rape rape rape rape rape."

We laughed until we cried. It became a running joke for the next two years. It would go away for a bit then one day in the car we'd hear Jay Z song and she'd say "mais oui...I like ah Jay Z he eez good at the raping. Greatest raper of all time." Then it would be funny all over again.

On a similar note, when she died I passed her casket and thought "wouldn't it be funny if she jumped out and ate someone?" It sucked because I'd been a complete mess since it happened. Now I had to bite my tongue to stop from giggling.

Crazy part though, if it wasn't for that moment I might have jumped off a bridge. But that's a whole other joke.

Everyone In this thread has laughed at a rape joke at one point or another, the joke was just about a man so I guess that's okay.

People need to lighten the fuck up, if it's funny it's okay, if it's not it's just a bad joke.

Jokes are jokes.

People live this episode of the boondocks, while ep is one long rape joke
