sump area, great to hide filters and grow macro algae for more filtration.
also serves as a place to do water changes and top off's. ( i do a water change once a month) (15 gals).
Does not look like this any more, had some coral death last summer due to heat issues, needed a chiller to keep temps around 78 degrees.

under the hood, x2 250 watt metal halide 14k double ended bulbs.

I'm probably about a year off from doing this, but I want to get an idea. I want to make my own tank in the basement. An "L" shaped tank, probably 9x12 in the corner.

How difficult is it to do? How much would Glass be, and would it be cheaper to just buy a big fish tank? I could get some Amish-made cabinets or soemthing. IDK. Right now I am in the think fugging around thinking about it stage.

I had my piranhas for 7 years before my brother killed them in 2006. Started them in a 15 gallon, then moved them to a 55 gallon tank. They were awesome to watch. I used to feed them live goldfish and live mice. Never got tired of watching them eat. I want piranhas again, now that I have the money to get them the set up that I like.

You are talking about a custom made tank, it can be done you have to got to a glass company. You gonna need the trim along the top and bottom rims of the tank to help support your siliconed joints. The tank you want is not impossible but very tough to do and very expensive. Oh and you will need custom lids unless the 2 halves of the tank are a standard sizes, eg. 55gal or 75gal.

there is a guy on reef central who built a tank like this:

also make sure you use a tank calculator to determine glass thickness.
you will need the right silicone. and possibly euro brace it, to prevent it from bowing.

Something almost the size of this would work. I'm not trying to have it in the wall, either. I would have to bone up on my algebra & geometry, shit, maybe even dust off a calculus book or two to get this done.

protein skimmers and sumps are the best way to go.

will it be a salt tank or fresh water?

Fresh. Piranhas are freshwater fish. I just wonder what I can put in with them. I tried snails, they ate them. I didn't try plecostomus, but piranhas ain't picky. They eat any damned thing and they never get full. The reef would be great, but I don't know what else I can put in there and have it survive, including things frowing on the reef (wait...are reefs salt water only?)

reef is saltwater, why not a shark tank? that's a nice size for a shark.
or surgeon fisk aka Tangs or angelfish. just much more colors and lots of character. you could build led fixtures to light it and save on replacing bulbs.

Interested in getting an aquarium (20 gal)

I know Petsmart has the Topfin Starter kit

Where do you go buy the other supplies like gravel for a decent price?

Where did you go buy your fish for a decent price? I know Walmart and Petsmart sell them. Jacks aquarium is expensive.
