Anthony Bourdain participated in ‘death ritual’ months before suicide

TV chef Anthony Bourdain talked about his own mortality — and participated in an ancient death ritual — in the season finale of his CNN show “Parts Unknown,” which aired about two weeks after his suicide.

The episode, which aired Sunday, followed the celebrity chef and his friend, director Darren Aronofsky, across Bhutan in South Asia as they ate with traditional yak herders in the Himalayas and dined in the country’s capital of Thimpu, Eater said.

In one scene, a man explains the country’s religion, Bhutanese Buddhism, as something meant to remind people “time and again, not to take things too seriously. This is, in fact, an illusion.”

Bourdain responds: “Life is but a dream.

“It is considered enlightening and therapeutic to think about death for a few minutes a day,” he narrates over a shot of breathtaking mountain ranges.

In an article for CNN, “Black Swan” director Aronofsky reflected on the meaningful nature of his travels with the late chef.

“It seems ironic now that on our last day of shooting we performed a Bhutanese death ritual,” Aronofsky wrote. “We debated the fate of the country, the fate of the world. He was perplexed as to how mankind’s endless hunger to consume could be curtailed.”

Footage for the finale was shot about six months ago, and the crew had already begun shooting for Season 12. It is unclear if or how the network plans to air it.

Bourdain was found dead earlier this month in a hotel room in Kayersberg, France, where he had been filming an episode of the show. He was 61.

Hopefully CNN never airs that episode(which they may do as the "series finale" )..would be sad if his final line at the end is"..me,i'm just going back to my hotel room"or something *last shot is of him walking down the street*

Anthony Bourdain worth only $1.21M at the time of his death

https://pagesix.com/2018/07/05/anthony-bourdain-worth-only-1-21m-at-the-time-of-his-death/

The late TV chef Anthony Bourdain was worth just $1.21 million when he hanged himself last month, new legal filings revealed Thursday.

Previous estimates had pegged his fortune at $16 million.

Bourdain’s will leaves the bulk of his money to his 11-year-old daughter Ariane Busia-Bourdain and the control over his estate to her mother, his estranged wife Ottavia Busia-Bourdain. It was filed in Manhattan Surrogate’s Court.

His assets include $425,000 in “cash and savings,” $35,000 in a brokerage account, $250,000 and “personal property,” and $500,000 in “intangible property including royalties and residuals,” according to court papers.

The documents do not list the East 94th Street condo Bourdain bought with his then-wife in 2014, but the filings do indicate a $1 million mortgage liability for an unspecified property.

If u consider him a regular dude with a bomb as job then those #'s aren't horrible. He seemed to be living the retired life with strong income, 425k cash ain't bad. His entrepreneurial hungry go getter days were over.

Guess we need to know what he made per episode to make judgement on if he did well or not.

Correct. The amounts stated in the will was what he had when he wrote the will. But I still think the will is less than 10 years old and he should have had more at 50, considering his profession. He probably smoked it all.

This is the only part that remotely surprises me. I would have thought this to be the bulk of his net worth and would have guessed another zero on the end to be about accurate.

Anthony Bourdain's will surprised lots of people when it was revealed he died with around $1.2 mil in assets, because everyone thought he was way richer ... turns out, he was.
We obtained a copy of Bourdain's will, and it appears he created a trust outside the will which contained an undisclosed amount of assets. It's very common for rich folk to create trusts outside of their will ... partly for tax purposes and partly for privacy.
As we reported, the will discloses Bourdain left behind $425k in cash, $250k in personal property, $35k in brokerage accounts and around $500k in royalties and residuals.
The will lists Ottavia Busia-Bourdain, his estranged wife, as trustee. The will was signed in 2016, after they had separated.
Bourdain committed suicide last month in France.

Asia Argento Defended From Bullying On Anthony Bourdain Suicide In Open Letter

An open letter signed by more than 40 people, most of them female celebrities but including male actor and abuse victim Terry Crews, has called on the public to stop blaming actress Asia Argento for the suicide of celebrity chef Anthony Bourdain.

The letter, published Thursday by the Los Angeles Times, claimed Argento “has now found herself on the receiving end of vicious cyberbullying and repulsive slander at the hands of internet trolls who hold her responsible for Anthony’s death.”

The note also said that Argento has been accused by online commenters of using the #MeToo movement and Bourdain’s suicide to advance her career.

The letter’s signatories included Crews; actresses Rosanna Arquette, Paz de la Huerta, Natasha Henstridge, Oliva Munn, and Mira Sorvino; and Fox reporter Lauren Sivan, who was one of the first women to go public with an accusation against disgraced producer Harvey Weinstein.

Argento has been blamed by some for Bourdain’s suicide in June. Pictures of her with another man surfaced several days prior to Bourdain’s death, and some prior online postings by her seemed to indicate a romantic split from Bourdain. Some observers used the information as evidence to blame her for pushing a despairing Bourdain over the edge, although her defenders claimed the couple had an open relationship.

“We are here to ask those who are angry and grieving the loss of Anthony to find a healthy outlet for their pain,” said the letter. “Asia is a survivor, just as we are, and her fame and outward show of strength does not make her any less vulnerable. Asia is not a headline — she is a human being, and she is in horrific pain.”

The letter concluded, “Our request for Asia is a request for any and all survivors. Our standing up for her is standing up to any and all bullies. We implore you to be kind to each other, to believe survivors, to stand up for survivors, to encourage, support and sympathize with them. We ask you to stand with us, as we stand with Asia.”

The LA Times comments section following the open letter was mostly filled with negative reactions and critical posts condemning the conflation of #MeToo with Bourdain’s suicide.

The Italian actress and director Asia Argento was among the first women in the movie business to publicly accuse the producer Harvey Weinstein of sexual assault. She became a leading figure in the #MeToo movement. Her boyfriend, the culinary television star Anthony Bourdain, eagerly joined the fight.

But in the months that followed her revelations about Mr. Weinstein last October, Ms. Argento quietly arranged to pay $380,000 to her own accuser: Jimmy Bennett, a young actor and rock musician who said she had sexually assaulted him in a California hotel room years earlier, when he was only two months past his 17th birthday. She was 37. The age of consent in California is 18.

That claim and the subsequent arrangement for payments are laid out in documents between lawyers for Ms. Argento and Mr. Bennett, a former child actor who once played her son in a movie.

The documents, which were sent to The New York Times through encrypted email by an unidentified party, include a selfie dated May 9, 2013, of the two lying in bed. As part of the agreement, Mr. Bennett, who is now 22, gave the photograph and its copyright to Ms. Argento, now 42. Three people familiar with the case said the documents were authentic.

That's a good point about his daughter. It'll be interesting to see what we hear about her and the estate as a whole in the years ahead. How the culinary world remembers and honors him years from now too.

Did Anthony Bourdain Kill Himself Because His Girlfriend Asia Argento Was Cheating On Him?

Anthony Bourdain was found dead in his hotel room in France early Friday morning (Jun. 8) after killing himself.

According to reports, Bourdain’s good friend, chef Eric Ripert, was the one who discovered his body. The two were in France shooting for Bourdain’s CNN show Parts Unknown. French authorities have confirmed that Bourdain’s method of suicide was by hanging himself with his bathrobe’s belt.

We know when Anthony Bourdain died, we know how he died, and we know where he died. But one question still remains. Why did he choose to end his own life?

Bourdain was in a relationship with Italian actress Asia Argento at the time of his death. The couple started dating in early 2017 and went public with their romance in September 2017 on the red carpet of the annual Creative Arts Emmys in Los Angeles.

Bourdain was in a relationship with Italian actress Asia Argento at the time of his death. The couple started dating in early 2017 and went public with their romance in September 2017 on the red carpet of the annual Creative Arts Emmys in Los Angeles.

Bourdain said in a separate interview with People, “This woman likes to work. She is strong, independent, creative, and needs to have an obsession, needs to make things … I think we’re both relieved by the fact that we both respect each other’s work. Nobody’s ever going to say, ‘Oh, but you promised we were going to go to the beach.’ No, you get a gig, that’s it. Work first.”

So a long distance relationship worked between Bourdain and Argento. Yet still, the question remains… why did he kill himself if he and Argento were so happy?

TMZ may have the answer to that question. According to the gossip site, the couple “seemed tight as ever just last week,” however, “something changed within the last few days.”

Asia and Anthony were on a shoot together for Bourdain’s Parts Unknown TV show in Hong Kong that reportedly wrapped about a week ago. Anthony posted shared a photo on Instagram of the crew, including Asia, who was sitting right beside him.

The week before that, the couple were together in Florence, Italy, and still appeared to be happy and romantic.

But, according to TMZ, while Anthony was in France shooting his show, Asia was spotted back in Rome “strolling around with a French reporter named Hugo Clément.”

An Italian photographer apparently snapped photos of Argento and Clément “holding hands and hugging,” TMZ reported, however, the photog pulled the pics off the market right after news of Bourdain’s broke.

It wasn’t clear whether Anthony and Asia had broken up, but if they did, they hadn’t yet made a public announcement. Their last public appearance together was back in April at an event in New York City, TMZ noted.

So, now we’re left with the question: Did Anthony Bourdain kill himself because Asia Argento was cheating on him? Since, as far as we know, he didn’t leave a suicide note, we’ll never know why he committed suicide. However, based on interviews he conducted after his divorce from his first wife, Nancy Putkoski, Bourdain didn’t handle breakups well.

After he and Putkoski split, Bourdain said he coped by self-medicating and behaving “in a completely irresponsible and suicide way.” He told Daily Life in a 2012 interview, “I didn’t value my own life and acted accordingly. I had put myself in a very dark place and behaved recklessly in the not-too-subconscious hope that something terrible would happen. I was doing everything possible—smoking pot, drink-driving—to invite that.” He went on to say that “divorce was just the work thing in the world: it was f**king awful.”

It wasn’t that it was even a contentious divorce, there was no long, litigious battle; it’s just a terrible thing when a relationship that great ends,” he added.

So, it’s highly possible that if Asia was, in fact, cheating on him, or if they had recently broken up, he made the decision to end his own life, considering that those thoughts had passed through his mind before. But who knows what was going through Anthony Bourdain’s mind in his final moments, other than Bourdain himself.

For what it’s worth, Asia posted and deleted a bizarre Instagram story before Bourdain’s death was reported.

About three hours before the news broke of Anthony Bourdain’s apparent suicide, Argento shared a cryptic message to her Instagram story. The story included a photo of herself wearing a ripped t-shirt that read “F**K EVERYONE.” She captioned the post, “You know who you are.”

asia-argento-anthony-bourdain-instagram-story.jpg

After deleting the story, she posted a note to Instagram and Twitter calling Bourdain a “brilliant, fearless spirit” who “touched and inspired so many.”

Anthony Bourdain was 61.

Starving Child and Vulture

  • Kevin Carter
  • 1993
Kevin Carter knew the stench of death. As a member of the Bang-Bang Club, a quartet of brave photographers who chronicled apartheid-era South Africa, he had seen more than his share of heartbreak. In 1993 he flew to Sudan to photograph the famine racking that land. Exhausted after a day of taking pictures in the village of Ayod, he headed out into the open bush. There he heard whimpering and came across an emaciated toddler who had collapsed on the way to a feeding center. As he took the child’s picture, a plump vulture landed nearby. Carter had reportedly been advised not to touch the victims because of disease, so instead of helping, he spent 20 minutes waiting in the hope that the stalking bird would open its wings. It did not. Carter scared the creature away and watched as the child continued toward the center. He then lit a cigarette, talked to God and wept. The New York Times ran the photo, and readers were eager to find out what happened to the child—and to criticize Carter for not coming to his subject’s aid. His image quickly became a wrenching case study in the debate over when photographers should intervene. Subsequent research seemed to reveal that the child did survive yet died 14 years later from malarial fever. Carter won a Pulitzer for his image, but the darkness of that bright day never lifted from him. In July 1994 he took his own life, writing, “I am haunted by the vivid memories of killings & corpses & anger & pain.”

this is why it is royally F#CKED UP to criticize chastise and ridicule those who commit suicide.

Trailer For "Road Runner: A Film About Anthony Bourdain" Has Been Released
Chef Donny6/07/2021 3:10 PM

I was just thinking to myself the other day why isn't there a documentary on the life of Anthony Bourdain? Well, here it is.

Roadrunner will premier at the Tribeca Film Festival on June 11th, and in theaters on July 16th. It will also be available on HBO Max and CNN at an unspecified date. The film will be narrated by Anthony Bourdain using all unused voiceovers from his vast collection of on-screen work. The film will also contain never-before-seen footage from his shows as well as home movies from Anthony's personal catalog.

I don't think I've been this excited to see a movie in a long time.

Like he did for many, Anthony Bourdain inspired me to try and live a life of adventure and exploration. When I got my first job in a restaurant kitchen at 15 the first thing I was told was to read his book Kitchen Confidential.

From that moment on my perspective on food and life shifted. If you haven't read it, even if you're not a cook, I highly recommend it. It gives you a fascinating inside look as to the crazy life he lived before becoming the star we all know, from eating his first oyster in France to his time as a chef, from his struggles to his successes, the book will have you captivated from cover to cover.

Anthony Bourdain is one of the best storytellers of our time. His ability to connect with people from all walks of life and share their stories and culture with the rest of the world is something I don't think will ever be duplicated.

He made everyone watching feel like they knew him personally. It is a tragedy we lost him so early.

I can't wait to watch this documentary, the last unseen footage of Anthony Bourdain, a man whose aura will live on forever.
