2016 *What streaming media device do you use?

I'm simple.. Roku running Plex.

I just watch my downloads and Youtube. This set up is perfect for that, although I want to eventually build a cheap media PC for my Roku to stream from.

i keep sayin for a little more get this

it is an actual windows 10 computer that u can carry in your pocket

plugs right in to the hdmi port

use your phone as the keyboard and mouse

:frozen::itsawrap::wepraise::wepraise::wepraise:
please explain....... do you load apps on it??? how do you use it? & how do you use it to watch tv?
:popcorn::popcorn:

Ps4, ps3, chromecast, amazon fire stick. The chromecast gets no use now since I bought that fire stick.

Perhaps I should start s separate thread for this, but what kind of setup would you guys suggest for a kids TV?

I have a spare laptop. Thoughts?
even though your a faggot........ selling your ass on craigslist... this was an excellent idea.
I cant believe Im saying a faggot has a good idea. I didnt know faggots were able to have such good ideas.
& why do you care about what kids watch? Is it legal for fags to be parents in your state? you dont have to respond.

To put the thread back on topic, any help y'all can give with this plex issue ^^^ I'd appreciate.
I don't know anything about IP address

I download plex app on my roku and login with my plex username & password

If I'm local my server name shows up too

A roku ,
Has apps and mobile games , the remote acts as the gaming controller sideways
Or if you wanna go all out get them a "wii u" they can play Nintendo kid friendly games and watch Netflix on it, but plex is browser only no app

get any cheap Windows 2gb ram small pc to keep plex running
You can get something for under $100 on eBay

I use a Mac mini , not cheap but I just leave it on 24/7 so I use that as my plex server in the background
All my movies are MP4 so plex doesn't convert them , it doesn't affect my Mac mini performance when I'm doing something else and 3 people are streaming plex

Downloading?
I just download stuff on my pc and drag the files to my media folder. Roku can then stream any video or audio on my TV via Plex.

def gonna look into this over the next month

If you a downloader look in to plex , here's how it works

Let's say you have a 1tb drive full of movies and tv shows

You install plex server on your computer , the program runs in the background
Plex lets you watch your movies on the phone/tablet/tv
You can get plex on anything from roku to chromecast

Now tell your family brother/sister whatever to create a free plex account , they send you the username , you add them as friends
Now they can stream your movies on your HARDRIVE from anywhere different states , don't matter

All this is free

Plex automatically adds cover & movie info and plays any file format
You add a movie to the plex folder and it appears on the plex app right away

how is the quality tho? cos I cant do bootleg quality. I would rather pay for it

Plex is not like kodi
With plex you stream the movies that are on your computer, the ones you download
So if you download a 1080p 3gb movie is going to look the same on plex
If you download a 500mb cam is going to look like a 500mb cam on plex

You can choose on the plex app on roku for example if you want to stream the movie in original or lower 1080p/720p/480p if you have bad internet connection
At your house you can keep it at 8mbps,1080p , if is not local streaming but remote from another house you should keep it at or tell them at 2-4mbps,720p

Also if your streaming on your phone LTE you should keep it at 720p for smooth playback

If the media device your using for plex like the Apple TV can't play mkv , plex will convert the video but the quality will be the same and you can fast/rewind
Plex can play any format

Thanks anyway. I can view content from my phones and tablets as long as I'm on my home WiFi, but I can't do remote viewing from someone else's network. I'll figure it out though, it's not a big deal, just a feature I'd like to have.

Check the plex server settings on the computer, I think I saw a remote streaming yes/no checkbox
You suppose to allow it

Edit :

Is called remote access & mine has a green checkmark "Fully accessible outside your network"

Mine doesn't have a check, just a disable or enable button. It's enabled but says it's not available outside my network. I've opened the port I needed 32400 and it's the same thing. I have glanced through some of the help on the plex site, but no luck. It also doesn't matter if my firewall is on or not. If I get really determined to have it, I can ask for help on their forums.

depending on kids age you do do as BenQ suggest or use your laptop to stream media , you can also install Bluestacks which will allow you to run android apps on the laptop
adding Steam will also allow the Kids to play games online both old and new for free or cheap depending on game.

Plex might be a good idea if you have kids. Plex users can pay for the plex pass where you can choose which devices have access to what content. For free users it's all or nothing as far as folders you've added to the media server. That might help people who need parental controls for content, or want to hide their porn collection while keeping it available for streaming. I haven't tried it out, but it was on their blog a few months back.

I have an Amazon fire stick with Kodi on it. However, I can't get any of the repositories that shows the good movies on it. Any suggestions?

not true most of the free services I've seen and used you have to add your own content , yes there are packages that can just be added but the content choice is up to you
when my kids were younger i only choose kid friendly and age appropriate content took time effort and work to enter individually and lots of ad and site blockers
but they are kid friendly packages available these days though i would still suggest scanning through them to ensure you are happy with all the content.

Do you know how to add repositories

With plex I can add my own content, but if I have 5 devices set to stream from one pc, then all the content I've selected is available to all the devices. Now in the past if I've wanted to view something unsuitable for others, I've added it and removed it as soon as I've watched it. In order for me to keep the content available to myself at all times, but hidden from others I'd need the plex pass. I'm not familiar with the other streaming services. For plex, if the child is going to have their own laptop or pc as the server and not a central PC serving everyone, then it doesn't matter. And I'm not sure if streaming is the right term. I'm not viewing online content, I'm viewing my own video files I've downloaded and saved to my pc.

Yes I know how to add repositories, but for some reason, the GOOD repositories don't show up on the list when I follow the instructions. All I see are some BS repositories that nobody gives a damn about.

i have tons of content not suitable for others, it much easier when sharing my own files i simply have separate folders some for others some just for me. dont know if you can set this up in plex

Not without the plex pass. I started using plex because they had the roku app and it was an easy way to get content on my TV. What program are you using for your set up?

So how does let's say your cousin gets to watch your movies ?
The point of plex is that is simple , the users you add don't do any "computer" work

And does it look as nice as plex on the wdtv live ?

WD My Cloud is really a cool device, it actually gives you a VPN to your content from anywhere. When you add a person you really just give them permission rights to your content. However, the user interface is not as nice as yours, they say its a plug-in to add the media information to your content but I have not tried it yet.

im not using a program nor app for my personal files, i just choose which folders i want to share who can access them and what permissions they have
this is for downloaded content-
from my pc I have full and total access to all content
my wife has access to all movies and shows including kids
my kids have access to kids shows and movies but they can only view content and not make any changes

They don't make the Wd tv live anymore , what's a good alternative
For that kind of player , something not too expensive ?

A)You can add The basic Tvmc to the Firestick, as well. It has most of the good/popular add-ons
B)If you're not against using a build. Do that. I suggest the Beast. Works well for me.
