Giannis Antetokounmpo Could Play at All 5 Positions for Bucks

Listed at 6'11" (and still growing!) and having spent most of his overseas career playing point guard, Giannis Antetokounmpo has long been the type of futuristic athlete you read about in science-fiction books. Milwaukee Bucks head coach Jason Kidd apparently plans on taking full advantage of Antetokounmpo's freakish nature, claiming the rising forward will play all five positions at times this season.

"He's 20 years old and he's going to play every position for us," Kidd said, per Charles F. Gardner of the Journal Sentinel. "...He never complains. He just goes out there and plays. I think he's showing he's confident in shooting the three. He's confident while he's on the floor and he's doing a lot of good things for us."

Of course, fluid positionality is nothing new to Antetokounmpo. According to 82Games.com, the Greek Freak played four of the five positions last season, the lone exception being point guard. He spent an overwhelming majority of his time at the two forward spots, which one would assume will continue this season.

Kidd's quotes, however, create an expectation he'll at the very least spend a lot more time with the ball in his hands. Antetokounmpo averaged 12.7 points, 6.7 rebounds and 2.6 assists per game in 2014-15. He's still a bit more turnover prone than you'd like—his 15.6 percent turnover rate is concerning given how little creative responsibility he had—but he's shown marked improvement. Between his rookie and second seasons, Antetokounmpo cut his turnover percentage by nearly 4 percent.

The Bucks are also encouraged by his improvement from behind the three-point line. Antetokounmpo has hit a grand total of 48 threes through his first two seasons, only seven of which came a year ago. Kidd heavily emphasized improving his efficiency in his first season as coach, but it appears the team is more willing to give him freedom after a summer full of work.

"I feel it's going to come," Antetokounmpo said, per Gardner. "In the middle of the season and the end of the season I'm going to be making them, and you (reporters) are going to be talking how Giannis has improved a lot. I've just got to stick with it."

With the Bucks entering 2015-16 banking on a leap from Antetokounmpo and fellow core star Jabari Parker, the Freak's ability to move around the court will be pivotal. Based on what Kidd's saying publicly, all signs point to a breakout.

The Biggest Individual Winners and Losers of the 2015-16 NBA Preseason

Winner: John Jenkins, Dallas Mavericks

For the price of the veteran's minimum, the Dallas Mavericks threw John Jenkins an NBA life preserver over the offseason. Only the first season of the three-year deal carried a full guarantee, and even inking that pact didn't solidify his spot on the roster.

he former first-round pick of the Atlanta Hawks came to Dallas nearly two years removed from relevance. Injuries, defensive deficiencies and overcrowded wings all contributed to his disappearing act; after making 61 appearances as a rookie in 2012-13, he played just 37 games over the past two seasons combined.

But armed with a career .451/.375/.849 shooting slash and an obvious knack for scoring (14.6 points per 36 minutes), he joined the Mavericks with bigger plans than simply securing a job.

"I came here competing for minutes," Jenkins said, per ESPN.com's Tim MacMahon. "I knew if I played my game, I wouldn't be in any discussion about making the team. ... I'm coming for minutes."

And minutes should be waiting for him. While his three-point shot hasn't cooperated yet (27.5 percent), it's about the only part of his game that isn't clicking. He's putting up 20.8 points per game, a mark cleared only by All-Stars Damian Lillard, Kyle Lowry and Anthony Davis. Jenkins also looks comfortable creating off the bounce, drilling pull-up jumpers and finding his way into the paint.

Dallas needs some perimeter punch. All three of its projected starters around the arc are recovering from injuries: Deron Williams, Wesley Matthews and Chandler Parsons. Jenkins, who once seemed bound for the end of the bench, could provide that spark in a consistent role.

Matthews will probably be out until the new year probably. Parsons won't be ready for the season start. The start of the season is gonna be ugly for the Mavs.:smh:

D. Will & Wes playing, word is CP comes back game 3 or 4...we won't get our footing until late november or so.

An In Depth Look At The Cavs’ Front Court Rotation

151005-wg-scrimmage-17.jpg

Last year, following injuries to Kevin Love and Anderson Varejao, the Cleveland Cavaliers’ frontline became very thin. It showed in the playoffs with only Tristan Thompson and Timofey Mozgov playing almost all of the big guy minutes each game. The team looks very different this year, and the front line depth should give them an advantage for the duration of the season.

The team will welcome back Kevin Love and Anderson Varejao from injury, and also enjoy the added depth by the additions of rookie Sasha Kaun and free agent signee Richard Jefferson. Jefferson has never been known to be a power forward, but he has recently reinvented his identity as a viable outside shooter who can spell LeBron James for valuable minutes of rest.

James has already said that he hopes to take a lesser role on the offensive end and play through Love more than last year, so these options give the team many different looks to throw at opposing defenses.

The Cavaliers still have Timofey Mozgov at center to protect the rim, and with the recent re-signing of Tristan Thompson, they now have the deepest frontcourt rotation in the league. At small forward, LeBron James would be supported by Jefferson, at power forward Love would be backed up by Thompson, and at center Varejao would back up Mozgov. On paper, there isn’t much more than this that a coach could ask for.

The versatility of this group can’t be underestimated either. LeBron James can play small or power forward, Love can play with his back to the basket or he can space the floor, while Thompson and Varejao can each play the power forward or center positions.

There will be plenty of options for Coach David Blatt on any given night to manipulate lineups and find the best combination that takes advantage of an opponent’s weaknesses.

The added depth should also allow each player to play fewer minutes throughout the regular season and hopefully stay fresh and relatively healthy in time for the playoffs. It seemed like the ultra-deep Golden State Warriors were the only playoff team last year to stay healthy, and we all know how their season ended. Maybe this year is Cleveland’s time.

The rotation will certainly allow for players to not be over-worked on any given night or throughout any given stretch of games. The schedule has a few very daunting stretches of games, so the depth in the frontcourt should be very valuable.

Arron Afflalo has MRI on strained hamstring, listed as day-to-day
Afflalo's hamstring trouble was one of the few dark clouds hovering over what proved to be a fairly pleasant preseason. New York's medical staff performed some more tests on the shooting guard, who won't participate in the team's open Sunday practice.

Mild hamstring sprain? God only knows how long that will take to clear up. If Afflalo isn't ready for Wednesday's opener -- a scenario that grows more likely by the hour -- a contender for his starting spot may have emerged. Is it Sasha Vujacic? You bet your ass it is!
