Knicks schedule reveals: Opener vs. Bucks, no Christmas

LAS VEGAS — The Knicks will find out what they’re missing right away when they stage their season opener Oct. 28 in Milwaukee against new Bucks center Greg Monroe, according to an NBA source.

The Knicks’ home opener will be Oct. 29 against the Hawks, welcoming back former first-round pick Tim Hardaway Jr. after his Draft Night trade for the rights to rookie point guard Jerian Grant.

The Knicks were considered the front-runners for Monroe during free agency, but he chose the Bucks max deal because he deemed Jason Kidd’s club more playoff-ready. The Knicks settled for Robin Lopez.

It won’t be a Merry Knicksmas for Phil Jackson either. For the first time since 2008, the Knicks won’t be playing on Christmas, zapped from the annual nationally televised, five-game festival, according to a source.

The Knicks had played on six straight Christmas holidays, but their franchise-worst 17-65 record last season obviously was a turnoff. Their modest offseason additions have not convinced NBA suits they are worthy of the all-day showcase, though the woeful Lakers reportedly are on the docket.

Last Christmas, the Knicks had an embarrassing incident when Quincy Acy attempted to fight Wizards superstar John Wall after committing a flagrant foul on him late in a lopsided loss.

The Knicks, 22-28 all-time on Christmas, were slated for 23 games for national TV last season, but that number will decrease significantly.

Their final nine games slated for national TV last season were cancelled, including the Super Bowl Sunday match against the Lakers that was preempted for celebrity bowling.

One of the reported Christmas games pits the Warriors against the Cavaliers in a rematch of the NBA Finals. The complete NBA schedule will be announced Wednesday.

The Knicks will play host to the Brazilian team, Bauru, in an October preseason match at the Garden.

Cavs will open next season against their favorite rivals

Cavs To Play 2nd Game At Rival’s Opening Night

The NBA has yet to release their schedule for the 2015-16 season, but the Cavs regular season schedule is expected to be announced ton Wednesday at 6PM EST.

Although we only know about the Cavs playing the Warriors on Christmas Day, reports are that the Cavs will be playing their second game on the road in very familiar and unwelcome territory.

Last season, the Cavaliers opened their season up at home against the New York Knicks before taking off to face the Chicago Bulls at the United Center on the second night of a back-to-back. The Cavs will be doing that again this year, at least the part where they go to Chicago for the Bulls’ opening night game.

This season, the Cavs will likely be opening up their season at home as it’s not often that a defending conference champion opens up on the road anyways.

Stay tuned for the NBA schedule release tomorrow at 6PM EST.

Warriors vs. Cavs NBA Finals rematch to headline Christmas day slate
By Jesus Gomez  @JejeGomez_PtR on Aug 8, 2015, 10:23a 11

Jayne Kamin-Oncea-USA TODAY Sports
As always, the NBA has put together a killer lineup for Christmas

The pairings for the NBA's Christmas day matchups have been leaked. An NBA Finals rematch between the Golden State Warriors and Cleveland Cavaliers is tentatively scheduled for Christmas, according to ESPN's Marc Stein. Another game, featuring the Heat going against the Pelicans, has been been reported by the Miami Herald. A third game between the Clippers and Lakers could happen, too, per the Los Angeles Times.

The NBA season begins in October but most casual fans tune in around Christmas. The league knows this and uses the opportunity to showcase some of its most exciting squads. Let's take a look at what's in store.

Warriors vs. Cavaliers

A re-match of last season's finals, in which the Warriors beat the Cavaliers despite a fantastic performance by LeBron James. Both teams are the favorites to once again come out of their respective conferences and both teams are returning most of their supporting casts. This is the game of the day, a clash between contenders with a history and a matchup featuring some of the league's biggest stars.

Heat vs. Pelicans

Anthony Davis emerged as one of the league's best players last season and could take another leap in the upcoming year. After making the playoffs for the first time, his Pelicans could make some noise in the West. The Heat, meanwhile, should be one of the most improved teams in the East. With Chris Bosh back after suffering from blood clots in his lungs and Goran Dragic re-signed, Miami could be the biggest threat to the Cavaliers' reign.

Clippers vs. Lakers

This is tentatively scheduled to be a Lakers home game, but both teams get to be "home" for Christmas, thanks to the shared Staples Center. While it can be annoying to always see the Lakers, they're the biggest media market so you have to understand it's bound to happen. With Kobe Bryant back, they have some star power. As for the Clippers, they had a bizarre summer but clearly left July with their best team since they traded for Chris Paul.

Thunder to host Spurs in NBA opener, Bulls on Christmas

By Matt Moore / NBA writer

August 10, 2015 06:12 PM ET
The 2015-2016 NBA schedule has been slowly leaking, with the Cavaliers and Warriors set to renew their Finals battle on Christmas along with Anthony Davis and the Pelicans taking on Dwyane Wade and the Heat. Now two more bits have come out, via the Oklahoman about the Thunder's schedule next year:

For the sixth consecutive season, Oklahoma City will be featured in the league's biggest holiday showcase when it hosts Derrick Rose and the Chicago Bulls on Christmas Day, The Oklahoman has learned. It will be the first time the Thunder has hosted a Christmas game since 2011, when it defeated Orlando inside Chesapeake Energy Arena

Source: Thunder to host the Chicago Bulls on Christmas Day | News OK.

It makes sense that with Kevin Durant hopefully back healthy and Russell Westbrook fresh off his crazy cyborg season that the league would feature OKC on its signature day. Chicago has almost always gotten a spot based on the popularity of the team going back to the Jordan era, and with Jimmy Butler and Derrick Rose, this should be a great matchup. The game will also feature two new NBA coaches coming from the college ranks in Billy Donovan and Fred Hoiberg.

With the Clippers and Lakers also set to meet that night, four of the five matchups for that day are set. The question is whether the Knicks will get their usual spot, or if San Antonio or Houston will find their way into the matchups. It'll be great to find out what the line will be on that opener for OKC vs. the Spurs. The season moves ever closer to being here. The full schedule is expected to be released soon.

NBA to release 2015-16 schedule Wednesday at 6 p.m. ET

The Warriors get their ring ceremony soon. (USATSI)

Have you been dying to know when and where your favorite NBA team will start the 2015-16 season? Which teams are going to get the most nationally televised games? How the back-to-back sets will pile up for certain teams? The NBA announced they'll unveil the 2015-16 schedule on Wednesday during a one-hour special on NBA TV. The special will air at 6 p.m. ET.

Here's what we know about certain aspects of the schedule so far:

The Oklahoma City Thunder will reportedly host the Chicago Bulls on Christmas Day.
The Thunder will also host the San Antonio Spurs for their season opener.
We'll see a battle for Los Angeles on Christmas as the Los Angeles Clippers "visit" the Los Angeles Lakers on the holiday.
The Lakers will also play at home on New Year's Eve against the Philadelphia 76ers.
There is an NBA Finals rematch on Christmas with the Golden State Warriors hosting the Cleveland Cavaliers.
Anthony Davis and the New Orleans Pelicans will get prime-time promotion on Christmas with their game against the Miami Heat in South Florida.
Where will the defending champion Golden State Warriors start out their season? When will their ring ceremony happen? When does DeAndre Jordan travel to Dallas to face the Mavericks? What about LaMarcus Aldridge's return to Portland as a member of the Spurs?

Everything finally gets revealed Wednesday.

Here Is The Full 2015-16 NBA National TV Schedule

1383005347767834185.jpg

The NBA has released its full 2015-16 schedule, so head on over here or to your favorite team’s website to micro-analyze it. Below you will find a full listing of the national TV schedule, as well as a tally of the number of times each team appears on national TV. But first, a few observations.

This is the last year before the insane new television deal the NBA signed last year comes into affect. ESPN (74 games), TNT (53 games), and ABC (16 games) will combined to televise 143 games. Next year, under the new deal, ESPN/ABC will broadcast 100 games, while TNT will show 64.

The NBA schedule-makers have endeavored to reduce the number of back-to-backs and instances of four-games-in-five-nights this season. These scheduling blights contribute to a poorer entertainment product as fatigued players put in a worse performance, fans miss seeing their favorite players as pragmatic coaches simply rest their stars, and possibly result in an increase in injuries. Via the league’s press release announcing the schedule, it seems they’ve done a pretty good job:

As part of the schedule, the league’s total number of four games in five nights has been cut by more than 60 percent, dropping from 70 such instances in 2014-15 to 27 for 2015-16. In addition, the team average for back-to-back games has been trimmed from 19.3 last season to 17.8 this season.

This season will also likely see an increase in flex scheduling for all networks, ensuring better match-ups. Last year ESPN flexed out of a number of its games (especially ones involving the Knicks), but ABC and TNT were less able to do so as they generally had more exclusive Sunday and Thursday night windows with fewer simultaneous games to flex into. At a glance, it certainly looks like there are more Thursdays with six games on the schedule as opposed to three. Increasing the number of Thursday night games is part of the way the league was able to reduce back-to-backs and four-games-in-five-nights scenarios as well.

The NBA will tip-off a little bit earlier than usual this season, on October 27, with a couple of playoff rematches, including the presenting of the championship rings to the NBA champion Golden State Warriors on their home floor:

Cleveland versus Chicago at 8 p.m. ET on TNT
New Orleans versus Golden State at 10:30 p.m. ET on TNT
The league is also back with its traditional high-quality Christmas Day slate of games:

New Orleans versus Miami at 12 p.m. ET on ESPN
Chicago versus Oklahoma City at 2:30 p.m. ET on ABC
Golden State versus Cleveland at 5 p.m. ET on ABC
San Antonio versus Houston at 8 p.m. ET on ESPN
Los Angeles Clippers versus Los Angeles Lakers at 10:30 p.m. ET on ESPN

Apr. 13, 10:30 p.m. ET Utah @ L.A. Lakers ESPN
Every year when the schedule comes out, the first thing I do is look at how many national TV appearances each team gets. This year NBA finalists Cleveland and Golden State will each appear on national TV the maximum 25 times, while good and/or entertaining teams like the Los Angeles Clippers, Oklahoma, Chicago, and San Antonio will all appear over 20 times.

A pleasant surprise this year is that the NBA has finally figured out that nobody wants to watch a dogshit New York Knicks teams, and have only given them seven games. The other bad large-market team that always gets a ton of games, the Los Angeles Lakers, will be shown 19 times, but admittedly there are fewer West Coast teams to play in the 10:30 p.m. ET national TV slots. The bottom of the list is rounded out by Detroit, Denver, and Philadelphia, none of whom will be seen on national TV this season.

While the NBA has certainly improved in regards to the Knicks, every year the league does its fans and itself a disservice by catering to established teams at the expense of the up-and-coming. Toronto, a solid playoff squad (in the East) whose profile is increasing as basketball in Canada blows up even more, will only be on TV twice. The highly-exciting Utah Jazz, who look to be in a tight race for a playoff spot, will only be on TV three times. The Milwaukee Bucks, quite possibly the second best team in the East, will only be on TV four times. It would lead to lower ratings in the short-term—and it’s unclear how much sway the networks have over who gets placed on the schedule—but the league should give a few more appearances to the teams near the bottom of this list.

Total Number of National TV Appearances

Cleveland Cavaliers – 25
Golden State Warriors – 25
Los Angeles Clippers – 24
Oklahoma City Thunder – 24
Chicago Bulls – 23
San Antonio Spurs – 21
Houston Rockets – 19
Los Angeles Lakers – 19
New Orleans Pelicans – 13
Miami Heat – 11
Memphis Grizzlies – 10
Atlanta Hawks – 8
Boston Celtics – 7
Indiana Pacers – 7
Dallas Mavericks – 7
New York Knicks – 7
Minnesota Timberwolves – 5
Phoenix Suns – 5
Portland Trail Blazers – 5
Washington Wizards – 5
Milwaukee Bucks – 4
Sacramento Kings – 4
Utah Jazz – 3
Toronto Raptors – 2
Brooklyn Nets – 1
Charlotte Hornets – 1
Orlando Magic – 1
Denver Nuggets – 0
Detroit Pistons – 0
Philadelphia 76ers – 0

Re: NBA team Schedules

NBA schedule more player friendly with fewer back-to-back games

Reducing the number of back-to-back games and four games in five days that NBA teams play was high on Commissioner Adam Silver’s agenda.

Without extending the season by a week at the start or a week at the end, Silver made a dent in those numbers in an effort to reduce fatigue, wear and tear, including injuries, and increase the level of competition.

Back-to-backs have been reduced to 17.8 per team for 2015-16, down from 19.3 last season, and no team has more than 20 back-to-backs this season.
Long-distance back-to-backs have been trimmed from 111 last season to 84 this season; back-to-backs that cross a time zone have also been cut from 194 last season to 160 this season.
Four games in five days have been reduced to .9 per team for 2015-16, down from 2.3 per team last season.
The NBA reduced the number of miles traveled per team by 2%.
“I think this is the best schedule that we’ve ever produced,” NBA senior vice president of basketball operations Kiki VanDeWeghe told USA TODAY Sports. “We are extremely mindful of player rest, recuperation and we were able to reduce four games in five nights and back-to-backs to all-time lows. …

“We want to be mindful of putting the best product on the floor that we possibly can. The rigors of an NBA season are tough. Nobody denies that.”

The league made a serious dent in those four-games-in-five-days sets, cutting those from 70 last season to 27 this season – a 61% decrease.

How did the league do it without adding days to the regular season? Input from the NBA’s front office, teams and National Basketball Players Association; data-driven analysis; flexible arena dates; and help from TV partners ABC/ESPN and TNT helped the league draft a more palatable, player-friendly schedule.

Thursdays generally had been a light schedule night in the NBA, allowing TNT to take center stage with its coverage of two games. But there are several Thursdays with at least four games, including six on Dec. 3, Dec. 31, Jan. 14, Jan. 28, Feb. 25, March 31 and eight on March 17. ABC also will televise eight of its 16 broadcasts in primetime on Saturday.

Even with computer programs, creating the schedule is not easy, and the NBA continued to tinker with the schedule as late as Wednesday afternoon.

“It’s quite a task,” VanDeWeghe said. “You have 30 teams playing 82 games, and you’ve got 162 playing dates to get all that in.”

The champion Golden State Warriors open the season at home against the New Orleans Pelicans, but there is a small price to pay for being the champs. Golden State is in high demand for TV appearances, and has one more back-to-back (20) than it did last season, and the Cleveland Cavaliers have one less (19) than they did last season.

The San Antonio Spurs benefitted from the approach to this season’s schedule. Last year, the Spurs had 21 back-to-backs and have 16 for 2015-16. And the Spurs are one of eight teams who do not play four games in five days. The others: Charlotte, Detroit, Indiana, New York, Golden State, Houston and Memphis.

Five teams, however, have two sets of four games in five days: Atlanta, Philadelphia, Minnesota, Portland and Denver.

The league will continue to explore ways to improve the schedule, and Silver said in April the NBA was discussing extending the season by a week at the end of the regular season. That won’t happen in 2015-16, but it could happen in the future.

“We’re leaving no stone unturned, and everything is one the table,” VanDeWeghe said. “Adam is certainly open to looking at everything and is very sensitive to our players’ needs.”

Christmas day schedule: New Orleans at Miami (ESPN), Chicago at Oklahoma City (ABC), Cleveland at Golden State (ABC), San Antonio at Houston (ESPN) and Los Angeles Clippers at Los Angeles Lakers (ESPN).

Noteworthy season openers: New Orleans at Golden State; Cleveland at Chicago; New York at Milwaukee; Dallas at Phoenix; San Antonio at Oklahoma City; and Denver at Houston.

The NBA released its 2015-16 schedule on Wednesday, which means it's time to get way too excited about games that are months away.

The contests that open the season and Christmas Day games had already been leaked in recent days, but the full release gives us the dates for some of the biggest contests on the calendar overall. Matchups between top picks, renewals of heated rivalries and championship previews adorn the schedule. The great thing about the NBA's glut of talent is that there is never a night lacking an intriguing matchup.

That said, some games are still better than others. What follows is a list of the 10 best matchups on the NBA docket. Now, keep in mind, the game itself isn't the only factor in judging which are the best. Free-agent moves, ongoing rivalries and plain old fun matter too.

With that in mind, click through to see the biggest games on the 2015-16 calendar.

Oct. 28: Oklahoma City Thunder vs. San Antonio Spurs (8 p.m. ET, ESPN)

hi-res-07565272bd595bea551969656a8c2755_crop_north.jpg

Bad news for Stephen Curry: The last two non-LeBron James MVPs suffered debilitating and recurrent injuries to their bodies in the following season. Derrick Rose famously tore his ACL and began an odyssey that is still ongoing. Kevin Durant suffered a Jones fracture and has since undergone three procedures on his foot to fix the problem.

While this isn't as serious as Joel Embiid's navicular bone fracture, it's a pretttttty big deal.

Durant, who has not played since last February, will make his return to the floor Oct. 28 against the Spurs. These Thunder are not the same team Durant left. Russell Westbrook became a one-man wrecking crew for the season's stretch run, nearly averaging a triple-double for the final two months while playing without Durant and Serge Ibaka.

The Durant-Westbrook pairing is already the most overanalyzed dynamic in the league. Things are only going to get worse now that Westbrook's had his moment to be the alpha while Durant was out mending an injury. With Durant hitting free agency next summer, every slight bit of turmoil will be viewed as his ticket to D.C. or Los Angeles.

More than any psychoanalysis, it'll just be nice to see Durant play basketball again. He was challenging LeBron's mantle as the best player on the planet before going down, finally emerging as a good creator to go along with his otherworldly scoring ability.

We don't know how Durant's body will withstand the first major injury of his career. It could be a Michael Jordan-esque blip or could ultimately be the thing that removes his cornerstone value.

Let's hope it's the former.

Oct. 30: Cleveland Cavaliers at Miami Heat (7 p.m. ET, ESPN)

hi-res-f9907f8d2dd79bb87bcbd0a77cd685b7_crop_north.jpg

LeBron James' first return to Miami will always be the most memorable. Eyes and ears were glued to every reaction—positive or negative—and the Heat's win was one of a few bright spots in an otherwise dark season.

The 2015-16 iterations of these matchups may actually be interesting from a basketball sense. Miami has reloaded in the post-James era, acquiring Goran Dragic to run the point and unearthing Hassan Whiteside from the scrapheap. With the Bulls back to the drawing board under new coach Fred Hoiberg and no other East teams making major moves, one could argue the Heat are Cleveland's biggest competitor in the East.

Of course, there is still a ton of work to be done. The Heat's best bench piece at the moment is Mario Chalmers—who is on the trade block, per the Miami Herald's Barry Jackson—or Justise Winslow, who is a rookie. Josh McRoberts may re-emerge as the playmaking 4 Miami hoped it signed last offseason, but until he proves he's healthy, there are going to be questions.

At the very least, it'll be a fun little matchup after all of that speculation about Wade spurning the Heat to join the Cavs this summer came to the forefront. As flawed as Miami's roster is, these may be the East's two best teams.

Nov. 4: Golden State Warriors vs. Los Angeles Clippers (10:30 p.m. ET, ESPN)

hi-res-7efc6d71f34d7b4c548da59f417700b0_crop_north.jpg

For rivalries to be relevant, their teams have to be the same. Sure, Celtics-Lakers comes with a drove of historical connotations, but right now it has all the excitement value of a Milwaukee-Toronto snoozer on a Tuesday night. Rivalries need animosity; they need battles—not just in the distant past but ones actually relevant to the players on the roster.

You can tell a real rivalry from one manufactured by pregame hype from the moment the ball tips. Never has the laundry the players are wearing mattered less; it's the players inside the cloth who push games to relevancy.

For my money—and yours—the Warriors and Clippers have had the NBA's best rivalry for a few years running. The animosity of the Memphis-Los Angeles rivalry has (slightly) faded as the Grizzlies left the championship scene, but their replacement is even better.

There's another old-school tough guy who hates Blake Griffin (Andrew Bogut). There are hard fouls that straddle the line between competitive and dirty. There are games when players get ejected on Christmas. Do you know how hard it is to be thrown out of your job when working on Christmas?

The best part of the Clippers-Warriors rivalry? The games are actually fun. The Memphis Grizzlies' grit-and-grind style tends to lead to foul-heavy slogs even if you appreciate the competitiveness. These are games between two teams that hate one another that actually play beautiful brands of basketball; it's like a Spurs vs. Spurs scrimmage combined with NBA Street, and it's glorious.

Adding even more intrigue this year are Lance Stephenson, Josh Smith and Paul Pierce, who will add a layer of toughness and unpredictability to an already volatile formula.

Nov. 11: Los Angeles Clippers at Dallas Mavericks (8 p.m. ET, ESPN)

hi-res-6a44d3cb72879f0e8c36fec9ab5f74b0_crop_north.jpg

From a basketball perspective, we could probably list 100 games we'd rather see. The Clippers are a championship contender; the Mavericks are headed for a top-10 pick. It'd be a surprise if the Clippers weren't favorites by at least a half-dozen points.

From a personal interest standpoint, all I know is I'll be glued to the pregame intros. Dallas for the most part is considered a lottery team thanks to the now-infamous DeAndre Jordan fiasco. Jordan initially came to a verbal agreement on a four-year max contract with the Mavericks in free agency before waffling in the final days before the moratorium, per ESPN.com.

The situation culminated in one of the oddest days in NBA free-agency history, with members of the Clippers camping out at Jordan's house as the Mavericks desperately tried to steer him back into the fold. Successful from a Clippers perspective, frustrating to the Mavericks and hilarious to anyone without a vested interest in the situation, Jordan's free agency stands out as the most memorable of the offseason.

"You can get caught up in the glitz and the glam of the process,” Jordan said in July, per Lee Jenkins of Sports Illustrated. “But you can’t take any of that process onto the floor, and once it slows down, you think about the basketball again. You think about where you can play the best basketball."

There's no question Jordan will receive one of the worst—if not the worst—receptions of the season. Dallas crowds are typically among the best in the league as is, and Jordan's spurning of the franchise, which arguably put the final nail in the coffin of the Dirk Nowitzki era, isn't going to be treated kindly.

Maybe just, like, flip back and forth when the actual basketball is going on.

Nov. 11: San Antonio Spurs at Portland Trail Blazers (10:30 p.m. ET)

hi-res-6d5975f7427431f48b54fa0b5175ab2f_crop_north.jpg

LaMarcus Aldridge spent nine years in Portland. He helped bridge the gap between the Jail Blazers era and today, giving the franchise a cornerstone it could be proud to market. Five of the last seven seasons included playoff appearances.

By any rational account, Aldridge should be cheered when he finally returns to the Moda Center.

Yet sports fans tend to veer on the other side of rationality.

Nine good seasons or not, Aldridge still left. And he left hard, one of four starters from last season's team to find greener pastures elsewhere. Had it not been the NBA's worst-kept secret that Aldridge was leaving, then perhaps Robin Lopez and Wes Matthews would have considered staying and perhaps the Blazers wouldn't have sent Nicolas Batum to the Charlotte Hornets for Aldridge's apparent replacement, Noah Vonleh.

Maybe the band will get back together for another playoff run. After all, the Blazers were a sneaky title contender to some before Matthews went out with an Achilles injury.

Still, none of that happened. Aldridge was always leaving, and he found a better home in San Antonio. The Spurs are arguably the title favorites, while Portland's revamped its roster around low-cost young talent. There's no question about which side came out the better. The Blazers are on a one-way ticket to Lottery City, while San Antonio may hoist the Larry O'Brien Trophy.

That alone is enough to take a solid nine-year relationship and turn it into a sea of festering resentment. (As a personal aside, I think there will be more cheers than boos for Aldridge. Blazers fans are generally good with their ex-players whenever they return, and a majority of the fanbase realizes this departure was a long time in the making.)

Nov. 23: Philadelphia 76ers vs. Minnesota Timberwolves (8 p.m. ET)

hi-res-b2b4aaadaff83d23b689875f6ec1974b_crop_north.jpg

Yes, you read that correctly. Legitimate interest in a Philadelphia 76ers game for actual basketball reasons. While D'Angelo Russell was the No. 2 overall pick, his and Karl-Anthony Towns' first head-to-head isn't all that intriguing because they play different positions. Towns and Russell will have very little (if any) on-court interaction.

Towns and Jahlil Okafor, though, should spend most of their minutes defending one another. They never got to have their highly anticipated championship game match after Wisconsin ousted Kentucky in the Final Four, but the two best bigs of the 2015 class will have no way to avoid one another Nov. 23.

The careers of Towns and Okafor are always going to be intrinsically linked. For most of the 2014-15 season, Okafor was the no-doubt-about-it No. 1 pick. It looked like a given. Then Towns, whose counting stats paled in comparison to Okafor's and who didn't really turn it on until the season's last couple of months, suddenly leaped to the forefront.

By draft night, some were wondering if Okafor would fall all the way to New York at No. 4.

In the here and now, it'll be interesting to see where both players are when they meet. Okafor's going to have a chance at instant stardom. The Sixers have a bare-bones roster, and they're going to want to see if Okafor and Nerlens Noel can make a feasible frontcourt. He's undoubtedly the Rookie of the Year favorite, especially given his offensive prowess.

Towns will have to contend with veteran Nikola Pekovic holding the starting gig at center, and even Gorgui Dieng will carve into his time. No one expected Towns to be an instant stud, but narratives will work in a funky way if Okafor starts out hot.

Dec. 25: Cleveland Cavaliers vs. Golden State Warriors (5 p.m. ET, ABC)

hi-res-cab08233d6b1b179e72b307df07d414c_crop_north.jpg

There is a school of thought among Cavaliers fans that says their team would have won the NBA championship if Kyrie Irving and Kevin Love were healthy. That theory will be put to the test on Dec. 25 when the Cavaliers and Warriors go head-to-head for the first time since the Finals.

Both teams look largely similar to their predecessors. Cleveland spent most of its offseason focused on retention, signing most of its free agents to long-term deals. Veterans Mo Williams and Richard Jefferson were its biggest outside additions thus far, though the trade exception acquired from Portland for Brendan Haywood is an intriguing chip.

The Warriors' most notable move of the offseason was jettisoning David Lee to Boston for Gerald Wallace, whom they later flipped for Jason Thompson. Thompson is a solid NBA veteran who will fill the role Lee played last season, even if he's not capable of matching Lee's peak.

Given the NBA's near-constant state of roster flux, this is about as close to a legitimate title rematch as you can get.

Still, the iteration of the Cavs that shows up will be far different than their Finals version. Those Cavs could barely appropriate a cogent offense when anyone other than LeBron James touched the basketball. These Cavs will have three of the NBA's 20 best offensive players on their side, now with a far better relationship than the one they shared a year ago.

Both Golden State-Cleveland matchups have Game of the Year potential.

Jan. 18: Houston Rockets at Los Angeles Clippers (10:30 p.m. ET, TNT)

hi-res-8acacbd32cca5b6de3f6d200679c3713_crop_north.jpg

Play out the Rockets-Clippers playoff series 100 times, and the Clippers win 98 or 99. Ahead 3-1 with all the momentum in the world, they had three chances to close it out. In Game 6, their lead stretched to as many as 19 points, and they were up 13 going into the fourth.

What followed was one of the worst collapses in NBA history. Houston came roaring back with a 40-point fourth quarter in Los Angeles and finished the job in Game 7 to make the conference finals.

The loss seemingly confirmed every narrative about the Clippers: That they weren't tough enough. That Chris Paul doesn't have what it takes to lead a team to a title. That Blake Griffin and DeAndre Jordan are a deeply flawed frontcourt whose weaknesses are exposed over a seven-game series. That Doc Rivers failed miserably to bring in viable bench talent.

Fast-forward a few months, and the Clippers are once again viewed as being far more likely for a Finals berth. Jordan's wishy-washy summer may have angered the world, but it still resulted in his sticking around. Lance Stephenson, Paul Pierce and Josh Smith are also along for the ride, the lattermost parlaying his Clipper-killer tendencies into being an actual Clipper.

The Rockets added their own notable piece in Ty Lawson but are nonetheless a clear fifth among Western Conference behemoths. If their general disposition isn't surliness next season, it would be shocking. Here's a conference finalist that added a (perhaps former?) borderline All-Star and was somehow shuffled to the back of the pack.

Throwing this game on as the capper to the Martin Luther King Jr. Day extravaganza was a smart call by the NBA.

March 19: Golden State Warriors at San Antonio Spurs (8 p.m. ET, ABC)

hi-res-d5cda2496c236471bd441acbce4d9073_crop_north.jpg

The Warriors are no longer the unimpeded best team in the West. That much is clear. The Clippers finally have a bench, the Thunder will be healthier and the Spurs—ohmygod the Spurs.

Long the NBA's bastion of continuity, the Spurs dipped into the free-agency market and—what do you know—came out with its best player. LaMarcus Aldridge not only pushes San Antonio into the championship picture, but also provides a bridge to the future. Aldridge and Kawhi Leonard will be the pillars of the franchise the moment Tim Duncan steps away (if that ever happens).

In the here and now, his acquisition merely shifts the West's axis of power. Aldridge's signing came along with below-market deals for Danny Green, Manu Ginobili, Duncan and the coup de grace, David West. West left more than $11 million on the table to sign with San Antonio, which is both admirable and a move I'd never, ever make in a million years.

As we previously noted, this version of the Warriors is on par with last year's at best or a slight step down at worst. There won't be any punches thrown or technical fouls or anything of the sort anytime these two teams meet. It will just be well-played basketball from coaching staffs and players who respect one another.

Sometimes that's even better than the all-out donnybrook.

April 9: Cleveland Cavaliers vs. Chicago Bulls (8:30 p.m. ET, ABC)

hi-res-da43543ec49bf64fb46659387b311a9a_crop_north.jpg

For all of their internal turmoil, the Chicago Bulls are still one of the Eastern Conference's four best teams. Some, most of them Bulls fans, would even argue the team is better now that it has replaced taskmaster Tom Thibodeau with offensive guru Fred Hoiberg. (At the very least, we can all agree things will be better at the team cafeteria.)

While we have no idea how Hoiberg will translate to the pro game, the tools are in place for another 50-win outfit. Derrick Rose will be in Year 2 of his return to full-time action, Joakim Noah will have had the whole summer to rest his ailing body, and the team has retained most of its biggest contributors. Things could be even better if the Bulls unload one of their big men for a wing defender who can stretch the floor.

As it stands, though, the Cavs and Bulls still have the East's best rivalry. Their shared history goes back to James' final season during his initial run in Cleveland, transfer to Miami and bounce back to Cleveland. It was Rose who won MVP during the height of LeBron haterdom, and the Bulls may have unseated James' reign of Eastern Conference terror if it weren't for injuries.

Either way, Hoiberg adds a new dynamic to the rivalry. If he's able to keep the Thibodeau defensive concepts and add wrinkles to the offense, Chicago could be right up there with Miami and the Atlanta Hawks as Cleveland's biggest challenger.

Hopefully we have another amazing season!!!

Season opener: Oct. 27 vs. Detroit Pistons
Home opener: Same
National TV games: 8
Back to backs: 19
Any 4-game-in-5-night stretches? Nov. 3-7, Nov. 24-28

Longest road trip: 5 games (March 1-10 vs. Warriors, Lakers, Clippers, Jazz, Raptors)

Indiana Pacers

11199498_972506292801097_173194970_n.jpg

Season opener: Oct. 28 at Toronto Raptors
Home opener: Oct. 29 vs. Memphis Grizzlies
National TV games: 7
Back to backs: 17
Any 4-game-in-5-night stretches? No
Longest homestand: 5 games from March 15-24 (Celtics, Raptors, Thunder, 76ers, Pelicans)
Longest road trip: 4 games, four separate times
Game to circle: Nov. 6 vs. Heat (ESPN). The rivalry between these two teams has probably tailed off, but there's still some remaining players from their three playoff wars from 2012-14.
Los Angeles Clippers

Season opener: Oct. 28 at Sacramento Kings
Home opener: Oct. 29 vs. Dallas Mavericks
National TV games: 24
Back to backs: 20
Any 4-game-in-5-night stretches? March 27-31
Longest homestand: 6 games from Nov. 25-Dec. 5 (Jazz, Pelicans, Timberwolves, Trail Blazers, Pacers, Magic)
Longest road trip: 5 games, four separate times
Game to circle: Dec. 18 at Spurs (ESPN). There are lots of choices for this slot, but we'll go with L.A.'s first game against the likely West favorite.

Any 4-game-in-5-night stretches? Nov. 30-Dec. 2

Longest road trip: 8 games from Dec. 1-12 (76ers, Wizards, Hawks, Pistons, Raptors, Timberwolves, Spurs, Rockets)
Game to circle: Dec. 25 vs. LA Clippers (ESPN). Because regaining LA on Christmas is the most reasonable goal the Lakers will have this year.
Memphis Grizzlies

Season opener: Oct. 28 vs. Cleveland Cavaliers
Home opener: Same
National TV games: 10
Back to backs: 18
Any 4-game-in-5-night stretches? No

Longest road trip: 5 games from Nov. 2-9 (Warriors, Kings, Trail Blazers, Jazz, Clippers)

(One thing I don't get, Dragic only signed on if the Heat were to play faster, this roster don't seem like a run and gun squad)
Season opener: Oct. 28 vs. Charlotte Hornets

Back to backs: 20
Any 4-game-in-5-night stretches? Jan. 12-16
Longest homestand: 5 games from Feb. 27-March 6 (Pistons, Rockets, Pacers, Timberwolves, Thunder) and March 26-April 5 (Hornets, Suns, Magic, Bulls, Cavaliers)
Toughest stretch: 4 games, three different times
Game to circle: Jan. 12 vs. Bulls. This'll be Chicago's first visit to Milwaukee since their chippy six-game first-round series. Will Mike Dunleavy elbow someone again?
