a lot of shit posted here i cant get wit, that's the main reason i always tell ppl to sample it first and when i say sample i mean wear the shit for a full day, there's a lot of popular cologne that i cant rock wit and hate the smell, i prefer safe inoffensive colognes with basic notes that most ppl love, a lot of these top of the line colognes use notes that's a acquired taste, 90% of niche fragrances smell like a suit from the 60's that was in your grand pops closet for 40 yrs filled wit moth balls :smh:

Yea Im convinced cats just throwing names out there lol.......

Honestly most of Tom Ford fragrances are nasty and def cater toward the Euro market. Virgin Island Water is def a niche once in a blue moon fragrance. Polo Red smells like Desire by Dunhill but has no staying power.

The Bond series has some winners but def has some BIG losers as well. I like Manhattan, New Haarlem, and couple others that escape me. I think Wall Street is decent as well.

Googling some of these colognes right? And im surprised that cats are really spending 300+ on cologne on a regular basis? the most i can go is a bit over 100. But to each his own

Not to say cats don't have these colognes, however all I am seeing is online pics and not originals

the creed cologne and other niche colognes are well done as far as quality, they use top of the line shit and its not that synthetic feel, i jus feel like a lot of the smells they create are not for everyone

Been wanting to get into Bond, I know some cats on the board have different bottles. I hear Bleecker Street and Coney Island are the best ones, which one/ones would guys recommend to get first? Keep this thread bumped guys! Very Informative!:yes:

bond-92.jpg

I wanna try bond no. 9 as we'll but I'm hearing nuit de noho, new Haarlem and oud,,,

 at cats complaining about niche colognes
the price is the price, if its too high go designer... but there are plenty of niche joints for designer prices. If you just want that particular cologne get in on splits! Which is what I did when I first jumped into the fragrance community. Trust me do tons of splits. Your preferences will change the more you've been exposed to different scents.

Those complaining about the scents just haven't smelled the right 1's. There is definitely a difference in (most)niche and designer quality. Once you start wearing a lot of niche an go back to designer after say a 3 months, you will notice what reviewers mean when they say they are synthetic or alcohol smelling. Although there are certainly designers that have niche like quality as well

I've sampled tons of the Bond line and personally find them overhyped-bland. On the other hand I am a HUUUGE Creed fan. Virgin island water smells like coconut rum and ocean water  (I do own it though :dunno:) Tom Ford is hit or miss with me. I personally like Tobacco Vanille but struggle finding an occasion to smell like a walking honey glazed tobacco leaf. Tuscan leather is my joint though

you know you can go to Nordstrom or Saks and ask the SA to give you a few samples, they will if you find a cool 1.

I have both Bleecker Street and Coney Island. Coney Island is a strictly summer scent. To me, it literally smells like a day at the beach. Bleecker is also a warm weather scent but it's more aromatic and projects in the heat. I'd recommend both...

i consider myself a pro in the scent game as far as knowledge goes and i know the diff btwn synthetic and top of the line shit, my thing is most niche scent are a acquire taste, i tried most niche and designer scents and ironically the quality of the notes is what make most niche scents not too appealing to some ppl, the ingredients are so pure that its overpowering at times, if a certain niche cologne contains say something like coffee or tobacco then you best believe u gonna be smelling like str8 coffee and tobacco, a lot of ppl like that, a lot of ppl don't.when i wore mainly niche i got too many hot and cold reactions, but to each their own, i do see why ppl like some niche scent tho

yeah your right about the notes, they get so precise with the shit its crazy  Like the Tom Ford TV tobacco and Muglers PH are distinctly different. And the leathers and so on and so forth. I've been into scents for a while but I don't consider myself a pro, I still get on Basenotes and see hundreds of scents I've never heard of let alone smell. But that's the fun part apart about the game. Math, what's your favorite house 1 for Niche 1 for designer

I'm a creed head and don't have 1 for designer just yet

Chanel is the best house imo as far as designers go,Dior a close second, and creed got niche on lock not cause their colognes are spectacular but cause they're pretty consistent, i still think they're overrated as far as their prices go, also you can find a few designer colognes that smell very similar to theirs

do NOT... i repeat... do NOT waste your money on this bullshit.

i bought some on the advice of cats in the other thread... got it and smelled, NOTHING.

You are right to a certain degree, but I will say this , I have it. I spray it on all over and after about 5 minutes I don't smell it anymore, but best believe Females smell it, I get compliments in droves behind molecule.

Preciate the feedback. I will check them out. I recently ordered Silver Mountain Water and wanted to know if anybody else is rocking this one.

I have VIW it isn't in the same league to me. VIW is for summer only. It is a real limited scent. It's cool though but I don't wear it much because it doesn't project to me. I had a sample of SMW but didn't deem it bottle worthy. I actually liked bond no.9 wall St better. But I need to get another sample an try it again. These are warm weather scents, may I suggest milliseme imperial. It's the most versatile to me.

Smells similar to Bond No. 9 Hamptons (which I also have) as well as Al-rehab Silver which goes for about $15 on eBay. To me it's a very casual scent good for running around on a Saturday or kickin it at a BBQ or some shit like that...

Cool I will check out that AL-rehab Silver. As far as winter Scents go, When I go designer, I mess with:

YSL L'Homme La Nuit:

It is surefire, but I want to pick up more Niche, because a lot of dudes probably owe me for that one. Everytime I wear it, I get plenty of compliments, but then quite a few chicks when they find out what it is, go and buy it for their man. Lol.

Also the Homie, Keftas white mother n law brought up Burberry Touch, which I also own and is also a surefire winter hit:

I've got the Wallstreet. I love it.. it goes on and doesn't immediately smell the best IMO. After a few minutes, it begins to sweeten up and lasts for a long time. I splashed some on and stopped by my girl's spot; shorty interrogated me about where I was coming from smelling like that
True story. If you can get it for cheap, do so. I copped mine off of Lucky Scent

the creed cologne and other niche colognes are well done as far as quality, they use top of the line shit and its not that synthetic feel, i jus feel like a lot of the smells they create are not for everyone

That I agree with that lot of the smells are not for everyone. Especially in most of our income range. Im convinced after being around the arabs who have the oils and perfumes and colognes on lock 95% of colognes are crap.

I actually wholesale to a chain of stores that sell colognes and they wanted me to make one for them. Since colognes are for the most part oils mixed with a perfumerers alcohol. Anyways we are talking about fragrances and bring up Versace Eros the boss's wife smells it and says this smells just like Thallium. "You know thats all they do right?, get one smell put it in another bottle and change the name" (With heavy middle east accent) They buy Thallium for like $4 a bottle. So Versace will come up with something close and now sell same ish for $90 and cats will eat it up.

Too each his own but oils last much longer and way more cost effective. I know cats want the floss factor so I get it lol If I had to go with a fragrance that I think they put work into Id go with Aventus. BUT that being said Aventus is just an updated Issey Miyake but Shhhhhhhhh :)

I've gotten alot of good scents from the old cologne thread so i thought i would contribute back. I get compliments anytime i wear these from ladies.

I love this cologne but it wears off quicker than any of my others

I was just about to post, but I wanted to see what everyone was talking about 1st...Bleecker Street and Coney Island are some of my best colognes. Chicks seem to dig Coney Island a lil more(it has a clean lemony kinda smell to me) but I like Bleecker Street better.

Either way you can't go wrong.

Edit:
I'm no pro at the scent game, I'm trying to get there, but a good friend of mine is and when he puts me on to a new scent I usually check it out. That said...what I notice about the Bond and Creed lines are that they last longer like an oil. Coney Island last me all damn day and I don't spray a lot.

I'll give up one of my long lasting jewels...layer Versace Dreamer with Egyptian Musk oil...shit works wonders on the women.

What makes a cologne a Niche cologne?

From Reddit:

(2) What types of fragrances are there?

Fragrances break down into two types: designer and niche.

Designer fragrances are the most common. These are the fragrances made by companies like Armani, Chanel, Burberry, and other designer brands. A typical designer fragrance will cost between $50 and $100. These fragrances tend to be mass-produced, and are designed to be sold to many people. They're made to have as wide of an appeal as possible, and so are typically safer than niche fragrances. Because these fragrances are mass-produced, they tend to be made from cheaper materials.

A niche fragrance is typically made from more expensive/higher-quality ingredients. Companies in the niche fragrance game make their fragrances for a more selective customer who wishes to wear something more bold or unique. These fragrances will not have the universal appeal that designer fragrances will have. Instead, these fragrances are made to push the boundaries of acceptable scents, and they often define what will be "in fashion" several years down the road. What runway fashion is to clothing, niche fragrances are to fragrances. These fragrances will typically cost more than $250. Because these fragrances are so bold and expensive, they are not what the typical man is looking for in a scent, and so this list will not mention them again.

From there, designer fragrances can often be broken down into spring/summer fragrances and fall/winter fragrances. Depending on what notes are in the fragrance, the scent might not be able combat the harsh winters, and so it won't jump off your skin. On the other hand, wearing a scent that is too sweet or has too many spices in it during hot days will often make people nauseous.

If you want to read the whole article good primer here it is:

hile I understand that this subreddit is often about clothes, a nice fragrance can be a finishing touch to a nice outfit. This guide is for the men who know very little about fragrances and wish to know a little bit and have two or three go-to fragrances that will be good for several years and cover any occasion.

(1) What is the difference between "cologne", "eau de toilette", and "perfume"?

These three titles differentiate between the different concentration of oils in the fragrance. Eau de toilette is the most common, and most of what men call "cologne" is actually eau de toilette. The concentration breakdown is roughly

Cologne ~ 5%

Eau de Toilette ~ 10%

Perfume ~ 15%

On the other hand, wearing a scent that is too sweet or has too many spices in it during hot days will often make people nauseous.

(3) The break down of a fragrance:

Fragrances break down into three sets of notes (the ingredients/scents which give the fragrance its smell): the top, middle, and base notes. The base notes lay the foundation for the fragrance and will determine how long the fragrance lasts on your skin. The middle and base notes are then extra layers of scents which give the fragrance its unique smell. The top notes tend to last for 1 to 2 hours, the middle notes for 3 to 5 hours, and the base notes ten to last from 5 to 10 hours. As the notes dry up, the scent will change, allowing for the scents to evolve and be more interesting. Typically (but not always for sure) the mark of a low-quality fragrance is if it remains monotone throughout its life.

Typical base notes are sandalwood, vetiver, vanilla, tar, tobacco, and musk notes. Typical top and middle notes are various floral scents, fruity scents, marine/aquatic notes, and spices such as cinnamon.

(4) How to distinguish between a high quality fragrance and a low quality fragrance:

There are several key factors in determining whether a fragrance is good. They are longevity, projection, and uniqueness of the scent. Longevity and projection are important for obvious reasons. If people are unable to smell you (even when close), then what is the point of wearing anything?

A good summer fragrance will not last as long as most winter fragrances typically because they are made from the more natural aquatic/citrusy notes. These notes tend to evaporate within five hours. A good summer fragrance should last you around five to seven hours.

Winter fragrances, on the other hand, have much harsher base notes that tend to last much longer. A good winter fragrance can last upwards of ten hours.

When looking for a fragrance to purchase, make sure to wear some on your wrist for a day to check its longevity. Spraying on paper will only reveal the top notes, and is not a good indicator for how the notes will mix with your body oils (determining subtle changes in the scents and longevity).

Uniqueness of a scent is often overlooked by most men. Your clothes are an outward expression of how you view yourself. The same goes for fragrances. Different scents carry different vibes, and knowing these vibes and choosing accordingly matters. Also, people remember scents well (especially women), and so if you are wearing scents that are unremarkable or common, you'll smell like everyone else.

(5) What are some good designer fragrances?

Burberry- Brit, London

Bvlgari-Aqua, Black, and Man

Carolina Herrera- 212 Men

Chanel- Allure Homme, Allure Homme Sport, Bleu, Platinum Egioste

Christian Dior- Fahrenheit

Davidoff- Cool Water

Diesel- Fuel for Life, and Only the Brave (strictly for younger men though)

Dolce & Gabbana- The One, and Por Homme

Hugo Boss- Boss Bottled (Boss #6)

Givenchy- Pi, Play, and Play Intense

Gucci- Por Homme

Issey Miyake- L'eau D'Issey Por Homme

Jean Paul Gaultier- Le Male

Joop!- Joop! Homme

Lancome- Hypnose

Paco Rabanne- One Million, Por Homme

Serge Lutens- Chergui

Thierry Muglier- Anything, but A*men is my favorite winter fragrance

Tom Ford- Grey Vetiver

Versace- The Dreamer, Eau Fraiche

Viktor and Rolfe- Spicebomb (I've only tried this once, but I enjoyed it).

Yves Saint Laurent- L'Homme and La Nuit de L'Homme, Live Jazz, Kurous, Body Kurous

Please note that this list is very short, and is obviously missing most quality fragrances. I advise you to do some research (watch Youtube reviews and read online articles) before you actually buy something. Do not trust the retailers. They typically do not know much besides what is popular and are trying to sell you a product (not necessarily a good one.)

I recommend watching online reviews. Two reviewers that I like are Mark and Tim. Both of them give very in-depth reviews. By watching their videos, you can get a sense of what is out there and become more familiar with the different types of fragrances.

(6) What are some companies to stay away from?

Armani- There are only two Armani fragrances worth looking into: Aqua di Gio and Code. Both of these have been in the top sellers list since their inception. They are not bad necessarily, but they're too common and for the price you can do better. Armani fragrances are typically expensive, and its not necessarily reflected in the quality of their fragrances. You are buying a name/popularity with this brand.

Calvin Klein-Their colognes flat out suck. They are not unique, and they dry off the skin much faster than a respectable fragrance should. There are stories of these fragrances leaving the skin only an hour after being applied.

The high school companies- These companies are Abercrombie and Hollister. These fragrances arn't low quality, but you'll smell like you belong in an algebra classroom if you wear them. If you are in high school, please avoid smelling like everyone else.

(7) Where do I buy fragrances and where can I get samples?

Please buy your fragrances from a reputable dealer. Rip-offs are rampant and are often made from inferior ingredients that can be dangerous when applied to the skin.

With that in mind, online retailers often do have considerably cheaper prices. I often by my fragrances at fragrancenet. They are good about selling only genuine products, and once you find a fragrance you like you can order it there to save a couple bucks.

In terms of samples, it's difficult to find some online. Your best option is to simply go to a Nordstrom's or Macy's and ask for a sample yourself. Stores like Sephora or Perfumania will also have samples that you can either buy cheaply or get for free.

Fragrances come in many different bottle sizes, but they usually range from 1 oz. to 3.4 oz. If you are new to fragrances, I recommend buying the smaller vials simply because it it is cheaper, you don't know how often you will be wearing it, and your tastes will probably change once you get the chance to smell a lot of different things. You would hate it if you were only a forth of the way through an expensive bottle and you didn't care for it anymore.

(8) How much to wear, how to properly store your fragrances:

You should begin with wearing one or two sprays on the neck. A lot of blood rushes through your neck, and so your body is warmer there, causing the scent to project better. You can add more sprays to your wrists or take sprays away depending on how people react. Remember, you won't be able to smell your fragrance about an hour or two into wearing it. This doesn't mean that it isn't there. So please don't keep reapplying it whenever you can't smell it.

Spraying a fragrance in the air and walking through it is worthless. Do not spray a fragrance on your clothes. The fragrance isn't allowed to mix with your oils, and hence it can't naturally go through the stages of notes like it should. Also, the oils in a fragrance will stain many fabrics.

You should store your fragrances in their original boxes, in your bedroom. Rapid heat fluctuations (like found in a bathroom) will cause the molecules in a fragrance to break apart. Sunlight does the same thing as well. Fragrances like constant, dark, dry, and cool environments. Your bedroom will suffice.

I was just about to post, but I wanted to see what everyone was talking about 1st...Bleecker Street and Coney Island are some of my best colognes. Chicks seem to dig Coney Island a lil more(it has a clean lemony kinda smell to me) but I like Bleecker Street better.

I appreciate all the info gonna look into the bonds probably drop by saks soon to get some samples and decide! Any other recommendations are apprecitated. Also, guys lets add some of the cheaper yet great smelling frags for the fam. Here is another recommendation from me. Summer Aquatic but smells great and you can cop for 24 or under on Amazon:

Does anyone have any experience with Victorias Secret Very Sexy for him? I was talking to this chick and she said this shit makes her want to rip a man's clothing off.

Also another best kept secret! There are two Very Sexy for him, and Very Sexy for Him Squared or 2. I think the first one smells better. The second one has a weird opening, but dries down really nice. The first one is a great work scent, and afterwork for drinks. Its also pretty affordable, I believe it was 40 bucks when I bought it. Let me know what you think.
