16-year-old turns down harvard to attend famu.

also at FAMU he will be enrolling in the "dual degree" engineering program with florida state more than likely.

Yeah, but our son majored in computer science. Harvard ain't got shit on Tech in that dept.

That's the most important part. Big names only guarantee big price tags. Each school has dept that they're recognized for and when a person tries to enter that field, any prospective employer will know which is which.
Young dude looked at his suitors and chose the one that suited him and with his family, I'm sure he made the right decision.

Only on BGOL can a 16 year old kid get shitted on for going to college. :smh::lol:

:lol::lol::lol:

a debate over where a 16 yr old that none of us know should go to school... after he's already announced his final decision.:smh:

he will have the exact same options available to him after completing his undergrad studies.

he will probably have some sick internship opportunities while having a good time at school.

he will probably graduate in the top 5% of his class.

he will get to select a great graduate program, pay nothing, will already have job offers waiting for him upon completion... all before he turns 25 yrs old.

what is this debate about again?

Paul Krugman is a Nobel Laureate in Economics. Stephen Hawking consults governments and Fortune 500 companies on astrophysics. Those guys seem to be doing pretty well from where I stand.

Shitting on Paul Krugman and Steven Hawkings? :smh::smh:
Its not. Neither is Penn State University. The person who wrote the article is wrong.

Maybe the author meant University of Pennsylvania?

Proud of this young man. It goes to show that a child's foundation and surroundings helps a lot.

The kids parents were educators, so naturally he was accustomed to education, and schoolwork.

Good shit!!!

theres a filter in place in society

the ones that goes to the best schools get paid the most in leadership positions

I would give my right arm to have the ability to do grad school at Standford

he should go to Harvard many contacts there not hating on the other schools but Harvard for a minority is golden. imagine your fellow graduates and their connections and clubs you can join, associations//?

He's made HIS decision. He can attend Harvard for post undergrad. Let this young brotha breathe.

He wants to be a big fish in a small pond. He can be the smartest at FAMU, but at harvard he might not be.

basically. He has done well for himself but his scores would place him in the bottom quarter of the class at Harvard. Regardless of what friends/family et al say, I advise all of the kids I mentor to go to the best school they get into. Better schools have more money to throw at minority students. Harvard has around 7k undergraduates and an endowment of over 27 billion. FAMU has an endowment of around 88 million. :smh:

that would matter if he were fighting for a piece of the pie but they offered him a 4 year full ride up front.

And some of the same ones in the thread saying he should go to a white school will be the first ones to call a celebrity or rapper a coon.

Got to love the hypocrisy of BGOL :smh:

Maybe he hates the cold? Props to little homie.

My son is on the same path. He wants to be a surgen. If I told you he turned down Harvard to go to the University of Michigan you boys would thinks he's crazy. Not knowing Michigan has one of the best medical schools in the country and Harvard doesn't.

I guess you have to know and understand the kid and what his interests are. Harvard's a great business and law school, but my kid wasn't interested in that. Maybe he felt that FAMU was the best fit for him, academically and culturally. There are a lot of kids that go to schools like Harvard, get there, and realize they can't deal with it culturally. Don't get it twisted, HBCU's also have alums in high places. If he stays on track, he'll be fine.

FAMU alums do go hard for their school. When I worked at Accenture, I met a Partner that single handedly create a FAMU recruiting program to hire a certain amount of FAMU grads into Accenture every year. Several of my associates were hired due to her efforts.

He made the best decision for HIM and nobody else. He can perform his grad studies at any Ivy School he chooses. Looks like he wanted to experience black culture as well.

parents should step in. Harvard is the name you want on your resume. Its the brand that gurrantees a big pay check. Bad move

Maybe he dont want a paycheck, maybe he wants to create paychecks for others.

this idea of going to school to work for others especially if youre talented is lame.

to me anyways.

Harvard isn't top 10 in medicine either, it makes you wonder how do they always find a way atop those rankings.

His parents went to Fort Valley State...the shittiest college in Georgia. No surprise they influenced him to go to FAMU over the other schools.
They probably have built in inferiority complexes that the kid inherited despite his academic abilities...he is not a whiz kid by any means.
Hell anybody can have a kid test well and get skipped a couple of grades.

G Tech is nothing to sneeze at. Especially their engineering dept. Alabama named as an Ivy league school? WTF!?!?!?!? I'm taking my ass to Harvard if it was me but I'm sure he has a reason for going where he's going.

He probably saw the FAMU sex tape. He's going for the bitches!

Its gets pretty chilly here tho. Frost but no snow type cold.

I seen broads already rockin the skin tight jeans and thigh boots today.

But yeah....props to the young man. We can speculate all day about how much better Harvard would have been.....not even an argument really. But thats prolly why its a "story" in the first place. Wish him much luck and may he not be sidetracked by scallywags along the path to greatness.

BINGO However I do think he is a whiz kid, he has a good head on his shoulders.
