Went and checked out END OF WATCH yesterday (free tix). Enjoyed it. Been seeing the promo & on-set shots for KILLING THEM SOFTLY for several months, and I'm definitely looking forward to this one. They aired the trailer for this one and the crowd response was positive. Keep an eye out for it ... Brad Pitt ... Ray Liotta ... James Gandolfini, and more. Good little trailer.

* The trailer itself picks up shortly after the 01:15 mark once Johnny Cash's "The Man Comes Around" joint kicks in. Really enjoyed that track the past decade. That said ... should be a good flick. Movie opens later this fall & the feedback is positive thus far per IMDB, Rotten Tomatoes, Meta Critic, The Guardian, etc.

Production

Killing Them Softly is based on the 1974 novel Cogan's Trade by George V. Higgins. The film was written and directed by Andrew Dominik. He chose to update the setting of the story, saying "as I started adapting it, it was the story of an economic crisis, and it was an economic crisis in an economy that was funded by gambling—and the crisis occurred due to a failure in regulation. It just seemed to have something that you couldn't ignore."[4]

The project was first announced in November 2010 when Brad Pitt was reported to be in talks for the lead role.[5] Pitt joined the project the following month, and production was scheduled to begin in Louisiana in March 2011.[6] Additional roles were cast in early 2011.[7] Dominik asked Pitt if he was interested in the role via a text message; he replied "yes" and the matter was settled over half an hour.[8]

Pre-production began in Louisiana in January 2011,[9] and filming was underway by March 2011.[10]

According to Dillahunt, the film's first cut was 2.5 hours long.[11]
Release

Killing Them Softly was scheduled to be released September 21, 2012, however the US release date was moved to November 30, 2012 to avoid competition from The Master and improve the movie's chance of awards success.[12] The film retained its original release date other regions resulting in the somewhat unusual situation where audiences in the UK are able to see the film over 2 months before those in the US.

The Weinstein Company will distribute the film in the United States and Canada.

Critical response

As of September 27, 2012, Rotten Tomatoes gives the film a "fresh" rating of 95% based on reviews from 37 critics, and reports a rating average of 7.7 out of 10.[13] At Metacritic, which assigns a weighted average score out of 100 to reviews from mainstream critics, the film received an average score of 77% based on 7 reviews.[14]

Peter Bradshaw of The Guardian gave the film 5 stars saying the film is a "compelling comment on economic bloodletting in the real world".[15] Tim Robey of The Daily Telegraph gave the film 4 stars describing it as "bleakly electrifying".[16] Total Film awarded it 3 stars calling it "tough, stylish, violent and studded with stars" but countered that it "doesn’t quite get the job done".[17] Den Of Geek called the film "another great achievement from an astoundingly talented director and one of our last remaining true movie stars" and gave it 4 stars.[18] New In Cinema also awarded it 4 stars stating that Killing Them Softly is "a towering achievement and one of the finest films of 2012 so far".[19] WhatCulture called the film "unsubtle" but gave it it 3 and a half star review describing it as "often entertaining but also frustrating".[20]

Will check for it, although Brad Pitt doesn't so "serious" movies very well.

Re: ► KILLING THEM SOFTLY - looking forward to this new flick w/ Pitt, Liotta & Gando

VA - agreed. He can be hit and miss sometimes with the more serious, dramatic content. Should be a good flick all the same. Can't go wrong with Gandolfini and Liotta.

Re: ► KILLING THEM SOFTLY - looking forward to this new flick w/ Pitt, Liotta & Gando

cant stand liotta. Never liked him in anything. Brad is always underestimated cuz of his looks. Legend of the Falls, Kalifornia, Troy and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button were serious all acted very well

Re: ► KILLING THEM SOFTLY - looking forward to this new flick w/ Pitt, Liotta & Gando

DG,

- Enjoyed Moneyball - saw the screening late last year or so
- This will probably be better / stronger cast / different genre completely
- No idea about the cars. I'm a kid from Canada.
- Not sure about the sista

Movie opens in 2 weeks. For those looking to win passes in their area, keep an eye out. The local ones here (radio stations and shit) started with their offers this week. So get those entries in, if you're interested. Just size up the US contest/sweepstakes spots. Our screening's on the 29th or so.
