Who can take a sunrise, sprinkle it with dew, cover it with chocolate and a miracle or two? Timothée Chalamet can, apparently. EW has confirmed that the Call Me by Your Name star will play the young version of Willy Wonka in Warner Bros.' upcoming prequel film about the young candyman in the years before he founded his famous chocolate factory. Deadline was first to report the news.
Wonka has been in the works for years, but it's still taking shape. Not much information is available about the film yet, but fans of the recent Paddington movies should take heart that their director, Paul King, is helming this project. King also wrote the Wonka screenplay alongside Simon Farnaby. Simon Rich, Simon Stephenson, Jeff Nathanson, and Steven Levenson contributed to prior versions.

Wonka is WB's third film about the character Willy Wonka. The previous two were more literal adaptations of Roald Dahl's classic novel Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. The first, in 1971, starred Gene Wilder in the iconic role, while the more recent 2005 version cast Johnny Depp. The third round will be a different story and will exclude the character of Charlie Bucket.
Do not get Wonka confused with Taika Waititi's upcoming series about the Oompa-Loompas; that project will be animated, and is happening over at Netflix. For that matter don't get it confused with Dune, another upcoming WB film starring Chalamet as an iconic character from literature — in that case Paul Atreides, the Kwisatz Haderach himself

Warner Bros. is reopening the chocolate factory.
The studio has set a 2023 release date for Wonka, its long-in-the-works prequel film set in the world of Roald Dahl's Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. The new movie, which will hit theaters March 17, 2023, will center on a young Willy Wonka and "his adventures prior to opening the world's most famous chocolate factory."
Warner Bros. first announced that it was developing a new take on Willy Wonka back in 2016, with Harry Potter's David Heyman attached to produce and Simon Rich writing the script. Paul King, who directed Paddington and its excellent sequel, has since signed on to direct.
Dahl's original 1964 book, about Charlie Bucket and his eventful tour of Wonka's factory, has been adapted for the big screen twice before: Gene Wilder famously played the outlandish chocolate tycoon in 1971's Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, while Johnny Depp starred in the darker, Tim Burton-directed Charlie and the Chocolate Factory in 2005.

Meanwhile over at Netflix, the streaming giant is currently working on its own separate projects set in Wonka's candy-colored world: Thor: Ragnarok director Taika Waititi is developing two animated series, one about the familiar world and characters of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and the other focusing just on the Oompa-Loompas.
As for who might wind up playing Wonka in Warner Bros.' new film? The suspense is terrible; I hope it'll last.

Timothee Chalamet has dropped a deliciously delightful first look at himself in costume as Willy Wonka in the upcoming prequel film about the fictional candy maker's life.
Chalamet shared the photo from the set of the upcoming Wonka, showing him in a chocolate brown top hat, perhaps a little darker than the one worn by Gene Wilder in 1971's Charlie & The Chocolate Factory, and what looks to be a crushed velvet raspberry topcoat (Wilder's was grape-colored). The actor is also sporting a geometric patterned scarf atop a multi-colored vest in the new pic.

"The suspense is terrible, I hope it will last … WONKA" Chalamet captioned the first look he shared on Instagram on Sunday.
On a second Instagram slide, Chalamet posted a look at Wonka's walking cane — made of wood and brass, with the top opening to reveal a purple and red wrapped present inside.

Back in May, EW confirmed Chalamet was gearing up to play young Willy in Warner Bros.' upcoming prequel film focusing on Wonka's life before the chocolate factory.
Paddington director Paul King is helming the project. He wrote the Wonka screenplay alongside Simon Farnaby. Simon Rich, Simon Stephenson, Jeff Nathanson, and Steven Levenson contributed to prior versions.

Add this one to Hugh Grant's list of iconic roles.
The actor who palled around with Paddington Bear and grappled with the world of Dungeons & Dragons on the big screen was revealed as an Oompa Loompa in Wonka, the upcoming Willy Wonka movie starring Timothée Chalamet as the future chocolatier.
Grant's Oompa Loompa made his debut in footage that was screened at CinemaCon 2023 in Las Vegas, but video has not been widely released online for the public. Chalamet's Wonka discovers the orange-skinned lad in a glass case, in which Grant performs a little jig for the audience's amusement.
The Oompa Loompa shouts to be let out of his glass case of emotion when Wonka arrives on the scene. "You're the funny little man who's been following me," Wonka says.

"How dare you!" the Oompa Loompa fires back. "I will have you know that I am a perfectly respectable size for an Oompa Loompa." When Wonka responds incredulously, Grant's character proceeds to refresh his memory of what an Oompa Loompa is with "a song so ludicrously catchy that it may never leave your mind." Cue the Oompa Loompa dance.
Timothée Chalamet as Willy Wonka in Wonka, Hugh Grant arrives at the Los Angeles Premiere Of Paramount Pictures' "Dungeons And Dragons: Honor Among Thieves" at Regency Village Theatre on March 26, 2023 in Los Angeles, California.

"Working with Hugh to begin with, what a dream come true," Chalemet said on the CinemaCon stage. "Also, as you guys saw there's [actors] Rowan Atkinson, Olivia Colman, and Keegan-Michael Key. It's just a dream as an American actor to be working with this dream of British actors, but that's the first time people saw Hugh as an Oompa Loompa, right? It was a trip and for those that [saw it]. And obviously, Hugh and [director] Paul King have an extraordinary collaborative relationship. And Hugh Grant's one of our greats, so it was a dream."
The prequel will center on a young Wonka and his adventures before he opened the world's most famous chocolate factory. A new take on the character popularized in Roald Dahl's 1964 children's novel Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, the film will be helmed by Paddington director Paul King, who wrote the screenplay alongside Simon Farnaby.
The footage shown at CinemaCon also gave us glimpses at Colman's character, Wonka developing a chocolate that makes people fly, and general musical whimsey.

"Every good thing in this world started with a dream, so you hold on to yours," says a character played by actress Sally Hawkins.
Chalamet revealed last year that he had seven musical numbers in the upcoming iteration (rap sequence, anyone?). "This movie is so sincere, it's so joyous," Chalamet told British Vogue, adding of his experience onset, "I hate to say it, but the dream as an artist is to throw whatever the f--- you want at the wall, you know? And I guess what I'm realizing is that one's personal life, one's adult life, can be quite boring, and the artist's life can still be extraordinary."
Wonka will be the third film adaptation of the character: Gene Wilder starred as the iconic candyman in 1971's Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory, followed by Johnny Depp in 2005's Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. It will not be the last, though, as Taika Waititi is also set to write, direct, and executive produce an animated series centered on the Oompa-Loompas who work in Wonka's factory.
Wonka arrives in theaters Dec. 15.

Well damn, for the Holiday Season might have to check that one out.

I'm torn on this...

He didn't nail that scratch that reverse line to me.

But the supporting cast is freaking insane

Looks great too.

We ain't need another reboot remix retro fit but I hope they do this right.
