G1 Owners Unite! The Official G1/Android Thread..News/Apps/Features All In Here

For all my podcast cats!!! I went out of town on the weekend and was entertained by several podcast while driving. my car system has and 3mm aux. input on it and the Nexus has and the headphone jack, well radio shack has the cord with 3mm ends on both side. I hooked it up to my car radio. I did that with the G1, I just had to have that adapter. Even if your radio doesn't have the aux. thing, there are several adapters that can get the volume of your phone to play through your speakers since it has the 3mm jack. If not you can listen to podcast through the phone speaker or headphones. Anyways before I left I downloaded probably 20 long podcast off podfeed, this site has tons of full length podcast, all kinds of topics, you can search by categories or you can enter in the search box what your looking for. From stuff on self improvement, technology, financial, religion, how to mack, lol, there are thousands of free podcast on this site, simply download them and copy them to your sd card, that's all! I use podcast more than music on my phone. Enjoy! here

Welcome:D

Yo Zei, preciate that mixzing  I was trying to see if they had a setting like coverflow but couldn't find it

What is coverflow...never heard of it. Is it an app?

 Just getting back in town! Been following this post on my phone, but didn't respond, because I didn't feel like doing all those quotes and stuff from the phone. Anyways much props Zei! Excellent apps pack! I just downloaded and checked out what's on the inside, I see lots of shyt I don't have, so this is gonna be great when I install in the morning! Much props! you got a hood past in this post for dropping all them apps, I hope the newbies coming in respect that.

go back a page or 2 and look at my post on how I basically got my N1 unlocked for under $200. A brief recap, sold G1 ($100) went from flex pay to post pay ($100 credit) bought the N1 off clist for $400. Also for ya'll you don't mind buying with contract, there's like 3 different ways you can apply on googles site. the first way I applied they told me $530, the second way they told me if i got an additional line i'd only have to pay $179 for the phone. 2 WEEKS AGO TMOBILE CHANGED THERE UPGRADE THING......I POSTED IT 2 OR 3 PAGES BACK. UNLIKE MOST CARRIERS, U NOW DONT HAVE TO WAIT 2 YEARS TO UPGRADE, WITH T MOBILE U CAN NOW GET A PARTIAL UPGRADE DISCOUNT AFTER 1 YEAR. When that went in effect I went back on google a day later and they told me i could get the n1 for $279. As I also discussed tmo is allowing flex pay customers who have paid on time for 6 months to a year the ability to become post date customers regardless of overall credit. I'm only repeating this because i'd like to see as many people as possible on bgol get the latest Androids, for there wont be this big gap, which can cause conflicts in this thread.

nice! Technology has come so fkn far it's crazy, just imagine where shyt will be in 2 years. I'm sorry I haven't had a non touch screen in almost 2 years, I haven't held a phone to my ear in probably close to 4 years (bluetooth). I'm big on convenience, i'm happy Android jumped in the game, I think Android has really forced everybody to up their game, I think Apple would be sitting on their butts if it wasn't for Android. Apple's prices would be higher, they really wouldn't be dropping as many features, they'd be stricter than they are 2day if it wasn't for Android. If it wasn't for Android would be stuck with those 80s model Mercedes I mean blackberry's (them shyt's have had that same boring look for 10 years) and windows phones. I must say, when I bought my first smart phone, I wasn't even thinking about touch screen cell phones, never thought about it, never knew it was coming, never thought it was even possible. I thought touch screen was some super expensive technology.............Well I don't see myself getting 1 of these tablets (ipad or the Android one) I give them props. Personally I just don't travel on airplanes enough, or don't go to enough places where I can carry that shyt around with me. With smartphones, I can carry a small device around with me everywhere, check my email, surf the net, talk, text, read, listen to music, podcast, etc..........Right now smart phones do enough for my current needs, to where I don't need a tablet. But, I think tablets are great for technology although I don't know if the market is ready for them...............

OFF TOPIC ALERT, I was just wondering what was the first touch screen, looking at how far technology has come and shyt, I was just curious. While this IBM phone wasn't the first touch screen made, it appears to be the first that was on the Market. I'm gonna try to find one of these babies for a low price, I like shyt like this, I have an Atari, an old Apple Computer, my first cell phones, that shyt just takes me to another planet. I guess I love the past present and future.

I guess this was the first touch screen smart phone on the market. 1994 the Simon, lol. The IBM Simon, was released by Bellsouth. I bought my first Mobile Phone in 1996, it was a big azz Motorola prepaid through Bellsouth Mobility. You couldn't tell me I wasn't the shyt, all my peers where still rocking pagers, moms thought I was selling dope, nope, just a young nga working fast food into technology.

here's the IBM Simon

Much love brother royal. And that tablet is made of WIN. That phone made me LAWL so hard

anyone knows what is the best rom to use with the g1?

It depends on what your looking for. Right now SuperD 1.8 is the most speedy, stable, best ROM with 1.6...If your looking for a 2.1 ROM then open eclair 1.2.1 is the best way to go[2.1 roms do not have working video drivers.]

I was looking for maybe the 2.1 or motoblur stable rom. I will try open eclair and see if I like it.

for anybody who dl'ed that NBA league pass (I'm addicted to that shit) I see it was made by mobitv... I went to mobitv website to see what else they had, an they got full cable an radio as well as other sports themed apps... my question is, would it be possible to get all the cable channels for free somehow

yo Zei... coverflow is really used on itunes, its when you looking at just your covers an scrolling through an playing albums. Its all aesthetics really

No flash, OS looks stupid, and they are really pushing social networking in the OS.

I'm not impressed at all either. They have a lot of catching up to do!!!

 the Zune looks nice but that about it.

http://www.engadget.com/2010/02/15/windows-phone-7-series-hands-on-and-impressions/

"General phone navigation: If you've used the Zune HD, you know what this is like. Lots of bold text on the device, lists with text cut off on the sides of the phone, and additional screens to the left and right driven by arrows pointing you in either direction."

I watched the videos on Engadget. I'm happy you mentioned the phone, i'm an Android guy BUT i'm not bias, i'm open to other phones, I give props where props is due regardless of who makes the phone or who makes the OS. I've been waiting to see what Windows is gonna do, I really thought they would come hard. I hope T Mobile isn't gonna be the main carrier housing the next generation of windows phones. Anyway this Zune looks laggy, I hate the limits they put on the home screen, the home screen sucks, shyt on the home screen is toooo big, no folders, icons, I like to have what I want and ---like I want it on the home screen. The worse part is NAVIGATING THROUGH THE PHONE, Makk you been complaining about your Gmail, haha, you see the vid on the Zune, you have click a bunch of different menus to get to shyt. Microsoft is a year late with social networking thing. Anytime a phone aims at social networking and games I run the other way (motorola cliq). I use some social networking sites but I like a more professional appeal than the Zune and Cliq. The phone may attract some gamers with the xbox thing. One thing I did like was that Calendar its dope!

Anybody have a dope Calendar and Calculator better than the stock shyt?

Makk I don't really understand your prob with gmail, I guess because I'm only using 1 gmail account on my phone, so your using more than one gmail account, and your problem is it takes you straight to inbox when you'd rather?? I'm confused at what your asking. But, you know you can just go to EMAIL and add several accounts instead of using your google mail, u can use touchdown, i think k9 mail, etc.....

So u like chomp better than handcent? I love handcent, i disabled all those kiddy bubble things, put it on Android conversation style and went to work. Plus I love all the settings options you have on handcent. I can't really compare to chomp, because I haven't used chomp since the early days of my G1, so maybe Chomp has gotten better.

I use multiple accounts. These accounts have multiple folders I use with imap. In gmail the folders double as "labels". Sending me to the inbox is bullshit since all my messages are in one folder- hundreds or thousands - and all they have is bullshit little label tags next to them. I have several accts setup in the regular email app including gmail - I stopped using the gmail app.
Actually I just rechecked it and the general Email app does what I want but I hate the black color and stupid assigned color coded accounts that I cant modify.
k9 I thought was garbage but I just saw some ok screenshots. Touchdown is trash.

yeah chomp looks cleaner to me. chomp seems to have the same settings but I didnt go through them both line by line and compare. I dont use a ton of config stuff for my texts anyway. I havent even setup individual ringtones or notifications.

I like the calendar app. THe agenda feature is tight and I can switch days like the pre. I use google calendar and rtm so it all matches up pretty nicely. What features are you looking for?

Does anyone know what tmobile's video size limit is for sms?

The calendar is cool, I just wanted a different color scheme, i guess because I've been using this same calendar for almost 2 years (basically the same calendar that came on g1, i think). I liked the color and style of the calendar on that Zune video.

The calculator gets the job done, looks better than my old one.

The size limit is 300KB if i'm not mistaken.

2 new HTC Droid Phones coming out

first the HTC LEGEND

500x_legend-2.jpg

Running Android 2.1 with HTC Sense, it's got a 3.2-inch AMOLED screen with 320 x 480 pixels, capacitive but of course. The camera is 5.0-megapixels with autofocus and flash; there's a 600 MHz processor and 512MB ROM (with microSD card slot), 384MB of RAM. The battery is 1300 mAh, so a bit less than the Hero, and the usual Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and GPS are included.

Yes that's aluminum

Next up - HTC DESIRE - SAME SPECS AS N1!!!!!!!!!!! Different body
(this has senseui though and a coverflow type media display- Im sure we N1 owners can get the senseui off this via rom or apk - however its included)

500x_desire2.jpg

500x_desire11.jpg

3.7in screen
optical scroll point replaces trackball (i dont even use my trackball that much- I mostly use it every once in a while just to use it )

the first phone, is just what i've been expecting and talking about....we are not gonna get this bomb of phones every couple of months that constantly get better, it's just gonna be 1 or 2 signature phones dropped every year from each carrier (Verizon-the Droid and 1 more this year, tmobile Nexus One and 1 more, Blackberry touch screen and maybe 1 more big upgrade, etc....) aside from the signature phones you'll get a bunch of phones with less specs and smaller screens.

As for the second phone, IT HAS FLASH!!!!! BUT....................

http://www.engadget.com/2010/02/16/htc-desire-your-nexus-one-with-sense-and-flash-has-arrived/

"Unfortunately, North Americans, you're getting screwed on this one for the time being -- HTC is only announcing that it'll be "broadly available" throughout Europe and Asia in the early part of the second quarter, while it'll come to Australia via Telstra. Supersonic, care to save us?"

When I went on my rant a couple of pages back I spoke on this, all these overnight blogs releasing all their inaccurate speculations and rumors. I have saw atleast 20 different Android and HTC phones over the past 2 months and none have been released in America yet. That's the reason I went ahead and got the Nexus, I got tired of waiting, I got tired of all those blogs posting this phone is coming out next month, etc..... The fact is until a high ranked person at a carrier or somebody high up for the maker of the phone says a great quote or there's a press conference scheduled I don't pay much of anything else any mind nowadays. The Nexus was suppose to come to Verizon by Christmas. But, when quotes were posted by high ranked guys at Google and Tmobile about this press conference that would be held in 2 weeks, insiders started reporting it was about the Nexus One coming to Tmobile. That's when I start listening and believing.

As for the trackball, lol, I have used it on sites that have a bunch of underlined links or.........for example say a thread on bgol is 30 pages long, you go down to click on page 17, but the numbers are so small and so close together your trying to tap 17 but you end up hitting 18 or 19, that's when the trackball is handy. I know my Bank's website has a bunch of shyt cluttered by the log in button, im trying to click log in but i'm hitting some other link that takes me to a page about loans:smh: so the trackball is useful on that website, its accurate when your finger is too large to hit a link that is cluttered beside other links. This is the best trackball i've had on a phone, it moves smoothly and it's large. I've had some trackballs that wouldn't even move.

how do you like it so far?
I'm loving this phone. Just got my 16GB SD card in the mail today. I just loaded some of the apks that were posted on here earlier & am bout to start loading music on as well so I can sell my iTouch. When you put your music on your N1, did you have to create any special folders for the music app to recognize it or will it allow for you to point to where it is?

everybody seems to like the phone, even on the nexus forums, at first there were people complaigning and wanting their money back on the tmobile forums but now everybody seems happy other than a few minor problems that are easily fixed by people on the forums. When u put your music on the sdcard the music player will recognize them BUT, I make folders like rap, r & b, old school, podcast, jazz, etc.....There's several different music players you can download paid or free. Zei posted some a while back. Check with him about what's the best one, I don't use mine enough to tell you, other than podcast and things.

I believe the music and gallery search the sd card for content and as long as it isnt in a hidden folder (one that starts with a period) it will automatically catalog it
I just put all my music in a folder called "Music"
I use doubletwist to sync content from Itunes. That album art app is tight as fuck. Great app.
i keep forgetting to get a 16gb sd
i havent even filled up my 8gb though

Does anyone who use bluetooth headsets have any issues static on their earpiece? I have a Plantronics Discovery 925 & I've noticed that whenever I take calls on it, I encounter issues where I hear a lot of static & sometimes even dead air.

does it do it after a full charge?
im using the bluetooth dock from 8 ft away alot with no issues
i was thinking the power supply on headsets leave them weaker than devices like the dock
my plantronics headset used to cut in and out with my touch or pre in my pocket - sent that shit back

Yeah. Same earpiece I used with all my other phones & this is the 1st time I'm hearing any kind of static on it. Worked without flaw on both the Pre & Touchpro. I hope I don't have to resort to buying another earpiece cuz I luved this one.

FINALLY...
Here is the dump of apps ive collected over the year since ive had my G1. As stated before this is a mix of rooted/non-rooted/1.6/2.0/2.0.1/2.1 apk files. Most SHOULD work with whatever firmware your on. If not and its a free app but come with a activation key, just d/l the trail version and all is good.

AppControl: http://www.mediafire.com/?jmknjok2nhr

And also astro users, goto market and download an app called "AndExplorer". Its a little simpler than astro and the UI is more friendlier

Just place the folder on your SD and use this app to install. This app is MUCH better for installing and backing up your apps. Astro aint got shit on this as far as keeping your apps in line and updated. This app ACTUALLY LETS YOU BACKUP PAID APPS. So what im getting at is that you can purchase an app...back it up...then get a refund and say the shit wasnt what you thought it was **MAKE SURE THEY GIVE REFUNDS BEFORE PURCHASE**

So here it is..enjoy ppl

MWC[Mobile World Congress]: Hands on GeeksPhone One

geeksphone_540.jpg

One final hands on video from Mobile World Congress. Our friends from and.roid.es stopped by GeeksPhone and got a look at their One Android phone. The hardware is pretty standard, but this phone comes with root access out of the box. GeeksPhone wants to target the hacker and development communities and even gave Cyanogen a shout out inthe video. The company was only founded in 2009 and they are already working on more devices which will keep the same level of openness.

Highlights of the GeeksPhone One include (see complete specs):

* 528 MHz Qualcomm MSM7225
* 3.2″ WQVGA Fujitsu MVA hybrid-resistive touchscreen
* 512 MB ROM, 256 MB RAM
* Camera (main): 3.1 megapixel HD camera with AutoFocus, Camera (front): 0.3 megapixel fixed-focus camera [Not yet available]
* 40-key physical QWERTY slider (d-pad and fn keys)
* 110 x 55 x 15 mm, 123g
* Android 1.6 based OS with enhanced UI

MY KINDA PHONE:D

-----------------------------------------------------

motoroi_540big.jpg

torola Motoroi (aka Sholes Tablet) is almost definitely coming to T-Mobile. We have been reporting since last August that Motorola was working on the device and recently saw the FCC approve it with T-Mobile 3G bands.

Early rumors suggested the device could launch in March, but we know T-Mobile will begin shipping the CLIQ XT on March 10, 2010. Motorola could chose to announce the device at CTIA on March 29, so a release next month is not entirely out of the picture.

Our friends from and.roid.es got a chance to play with the phone at MWC and posted a video. They note that it is not as thin as the Nexus one, yet it is much lighter than the Droid/Milestone. The Motoroi also felt faster than the Droid (even though they feature the same internals) so it could be due to some software optimizations.

There was confusion over weather the SK Telecom version would include Motoblur, but we are hearing the T-Mobile version will have it.

Aava Mobile could deliver first Intel Moorestown powered Android phone

aavamobile_540big.jpg

Did you really think Intel and AMD were going to sit back and let ARM take over the mobile world? Nearly every Android device to date has featured an ARM designed processor. Qualcomm, Texas Instruments, Marvell, and a host of other chipset makers all license Arm’s technology as intellectual property.

Intel’s Moorsetown is the response to ARM’s dominance of the smartphone market. The chip will be out in Q2 2010 and Intel says it will offer better performance than dual ARM Cortex A9 processors (which are starting to show up in Android tablets).

If the claims hold true, this means the fastest Android phones in 2010 would have Intel inside.

Aava Mobile just announced they launched the first 100% customizable mobile device for the OEM/ODM markets at Mobile World Congress (Hmmm, haven’t we heard that before?). The reference design is intended for system manufacturers and carriers who can customize both the hardware and software, and benefit from the creativity of established developer communities.

“We are open on the hardware side with our standardized I/O ports and the ecosystem of peripheral docking devices that openness encourages, and we are open on the software side with our Moblin and Android operating systems.”Markus AppelCEO of Aava Mobile

The device features the Intel Moorsetown platform and runs Android. It also has support for T-Mobile 3G, but I doubt the carrier would pick this up as is.

Highlights of the Aava Mobile prototype include:

* Extended touch screen (full A cover – front cover is touch sensitive) with haptics/vibra feedback
* Full HD video capability
* Micro USB OTG (also for peripherals like external mouse, keyboard, storage or docking station).
* HD video conferencing (front-facing camera with facial and gesture recognition – software dependent)
* 2 microphones (echo cancellation )
* 3D UI and 3D sound for high-end gaming experience
* GSM network (3G) for voice and data
* Accelerometer, 3D compass, GPS, Wi-Fi

Intel was showing off the Aava Mobile device at CES and we totally missed it. I walked through the Intel booth a half dozen times, but never spotted any smartphones. Thankfully, someone else captured the device on film. You can see in the video below that it was running the Moblin OS, but we confirmed with a representative from Aava Mobile that Android is working on the device.

htcdesire.png

press event and announced the HTC Desire and Legend as expected.

Vodafone was the first carrier to announce support for both phones, but it looks like the HTC Desire will be launching on a multitude of carriers.

HTC is working with a record number of mobile operators to launch our their new devices. According to Engadget, the HTC Desire “has been accepted by almost every key carrier in every key country we (HTC) work with.” HTC has strong relationships with AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile and Verizon and we expect every carrier will want to carry this device in stores.

A new version of Sense UI was also shown off that features pinch zoom on the home screen, which HTC calls Leap.

The HTC Desire is very similar to the Nexus One with a few minor additions. The Desire features an optical trackball (vs physical), Sense UI (vs stock Android), physical buttons (vs capacitive touch), and 576 MB of RAM (vs 512).

Google was able to launch the Nexus One for $179 with 2 year contract or $529 full price, so expect the Desire to be near that price range.

Check back later today for tons of new pics and video of the Desire and Legend.

-----------------------------------------------------

Dell Mini 5 also coming in AWS version (aka T-Mobile)

little bit excited when posting about the AT&T Dell Mini 5 earlier today, but I am a T-Mobile kind of guy. Imagine my surprise when I found out Dell will be bringing the device to multiple carriers in the United States. A Dell project manager revealed that the Dell Mini will come to the U.S. in two models; one for AT&T 3G and one for the AWS spectrum band which is owned by T-Mobile USA.

T-Mobile started off the year by being the first carrier to support the Nexus One and it looks like they will be the premier Android carrier throughout 2010. We are starting to lose track but their future lineup should include Motorola CLIQ XT and Motoroi, HTC myTouch Slide plus one high end (Desire ?), possible Samsung follow up to Behold II, first Sony Ericsson Android phone in the U.S., and now the Dell Mini 5.

I have a question for the Nexus One owners. Would you get rid of your Nexus One for the HTC Desire if came to TMO USA?

I would!!! Only because it's basically the same phone, with the same specs and I would have TMO support.

What do you guys think?

I have a question for the Nexus One owners. Would you get rid of your Nexus One for the HTC Desire if came to TMO USA?

I would!!! Only because it's basically the same phone, with the same specs and I would have TMO support.

What do you guys think?

So what about the N1 going to other carriers? wouldnt you wait for the same thing but on a better network?

this new phone from Huawei called the U8800

looks promising, I will try and hold out for it, it has a camera on the front and back. I wondering if I can skype video call with it?

Depends on if our carrier allows VOIP. Most companies[ATT] dont like customers to use this feature because your not actually using any minutes from your plan.

I don't think that I would especially since the nexus is unlocked. I really don't need T-Mobile for support unless I have questions about mybill. The phone is insured and I have a feeling that Google will make things available to the n1 first.

for anybody who dl'ed that NBA league pass (I'm addicted to that shit) I see it was made by mobitv... I went to mobitv website to see what else they had, an they got full cable an radio as well as other sports themed apps... my question is, would it be possible to get all the cable channels for free somehow

HTC Sense Now Running On The Nexus One

Android dev Modaco has gotten his hands on a watermarked copy of the HTC Desire ROM. He has successfully ported the too big ROM (too big for the N1 by 200 MB) into his Nexus phone. This could possibly be what all you Sense UI fans have been waiting for, though you shouldn’t be too excited just yet. Modaco has stated he doesn’t plan to release this ROM until he receives an unwatermarked version of it.

Hit the jump to see the details about Modacos ROM.

- If you rebuild the boot image replacing the kernel it runs. I’m running my own custom kernel with himem and bits.
- The system.img doesn’t fit on the N1 (!), it’s nearly 200MB. I booted by moving some stuff off the system partition.
- The trackball works.
- The 4 bottom keys work.
- The proximity sensor works.
- The LED works.
- The light sensor works.
- The compass and G sensor work.
- The camera works fine and is great with face recognition and touch focus.
- The FM radio loads, but makes no sound / finds no stations it seems. Maybe we need Desire radio ROM?
- The build I have is watermarked – i’ve removed the obvious visual watermarks but no, you can’t have this release – when I get a watermark free drop, yes!
- Flash 10.1 is included and works well.
- It’s FAST!
- WiFi works
- Bluetooth works
- 800×480 video recording, camera maxes out at 3MP (fixed in later builds)

More to follow!

I expect to see something come soon from either Modaco himself or another ROM developer. Just be sure to keep your eyes peeled for something. What’s everyones thoughts on the ROM coming to the Nexus?

Gotta love being a dev for android in these times. Another reason why im gonna root my joint
