Black Hair Can Grow- Tips and Inspiration

Nappy headed...

:lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol:

...Naw, I'm just bullshittin'......I'm glad to see this thread is still alive and well. It's good to see the sistas going natural. I have a beautiful, natural haired lady in my life. I appreciate her, and her desire to be both natural and stylish. Here are a couple hair cutting videos for the fellas...

:hmm::hmm: @ Don Imus

kind of made me laugh though

I'm glad yall are enjoying the thread.. and CT It's cool that your girl is natural..I hope you show her this thread...or maybe you don't want her to know about your porn addiction...j/k

I also hope you don't bombard her with gifs like you do everyone else on BGOL...:rolleyes::rolleyes:

HOW TO TRIM NATURAL HAIR: I think that there are some people who do not trim their natural hair. Personally I went 1 1/2 years without trimming my natural hair.. I would not do that again. The longer and curlier your hair is, the more susceptible you are to knotting and tangles. If you have fine hair, you can get single strands knots because your strands are so thin. I would personally recommend you trim 1-2 times a year if you do not use direct heat and probably 3-4 times a year if you use heat.

Yeah, she's great. She gets on my nerves sometimes, but other than that she's on point. She claims I get on her nerves too, but I don't see how that could be possible...:lol::rolleyes:...Anyway, I might have to pay a little more attention to this thread, so I can understand what she's doing with her hair. Right now, all I know is that she does it, and it looks good. Maybe this and just asking her (more) questions about things will give me a better understanding of what it takes to have healthy, natural hair. Plus, it may earn me "brownie points". Those are always good to have, just in case...:yes::lol:...

Thanks for this. I've been so afraid to go to a salon because you know..."trim" can turn into 5" on the floor really quick at some salons :smh:

Hopefully I can work it out without having to flat iron because if my curl pattern gets screwed up I will be nearly devastated.

Girl, I just twist and trim every few months. I haven't had direct heat in my hair since feb of 2008.. I went to a salon and this chick fried my damn hair and i had to cut off 3 inches :hmm: So I just do it myself...I figured I'd rather mess it up myself then have some heffa I paid to mess it up...

Product Line Review: MyHoneyChild

Okay so this line is really great, but not as talked about or well known. It is one of the most natural IMO because all of the ingredients are ones you can read, pronounce, and understand. I love the hair cleansers (esp. HoneyNutt), as they get my hair and scalp clean without stripping the moisture. The deep conditioners are really great as well and they also have a great re -constructor for those who have dry, brittle, chemically treat or heat damaged hair. The shipping is fast and also free if you spend $75 or more by using coupon code SUNNY. They also have a great online "consultation" where you can get recommendations base on your hair type and needs. You can also purchase samples to see what you like!!

I'm sure it will Chi...you should post a pic so we can see it. I haven't done it yet, I've done the bun for my job/school and all the white girls thought it looked so cool. If they ever see my hair blown out or straightened I think they will lose their damn minds.

Hair style How To: Three-Strand Twists

Not too many people have heard of this method of twisting, but I actually prefer it to two strand twisting. They are neater and the curls just look better overall though it does take a bit more time to do, but they make a much better twist-out.

I'm not sure I liked how it turned out. It was a little too puffy. . idk. I hated how it looked down so I pinned up the back.

It was my first attempt so it can only get better from here I guess lol

Aww thanks Dyme. I got a lot of compliments on it. Everyone liked it except me lol.

I used Kinky-Curly Curly pudding. That was really all I used as I was twisting them. I only used a small amount on each. Maybe I should have used a little more.

I'm gonna keep experimenting lol.

I hear the kinky curly is really tricky and that using too much will lead to crunchiness. I also hear that it works better on top of the leave in... Perhaps consider using less hair per twist or twisting tighter and see if that helps before you go to using more product.

That's how it always is girl, you don't think it's cute, but the world does...and when you finally feel like you do like it, no one will say shit lol

Product Line Review: Komaza Care

Another lesser known line. I can't say that I've really tried the line. I ordered some stuff from them and most of it is still in my closet. I tried one of the shampoos as well as the shea butter lotion and hated them, so I threw them out. One thing I've learned is to not force your hair to like something just b/c you purchased it, sometimes it's just better to let it go. Any who, here are what some other natural ladies think about the line.

Dreadlocks

So this is for those who have or are considering dreads. I am one who is considering it, though I do not plan to do so until I finish grad school or get pregnant with my first child, whichever comes first. I think that they can be so beautiful & sexy on both men and women, when properly maintained.

Websites:

www.dreadlocks.org (contains good information and tips on dreadlocks)

Product Line Review: Darcy's Botanicals

Well this another line that is gaining popularity. I haven't tried them yet, but I just received my order in the mail yesterday, so I will update with my own opinion of the products I use. I will say that she has some great ingredients and there are reviews on the website that you can read, which I think is always beneficial. The shipping time was a bit long, but that it is to be expected with products that are typically made-to-order.

What I will say is that they don't smell all that outstanding and the jars seem smaller than the normal 8 oz jars I'm used to. Andddd pay attention to the sizes because I ordered something thinking it was 8 oz, but it was 4oz, and for the price, I would not have purchased it.

Ok question. . . I plan on googling this but I thought it might be worth discussion if others don't know either.

When people are discussing the texture of their hair in a lot of these videos they say things like my hair is 4c or 3a, etc.

How does this classification work?

First off, let me say, for the most part, I think it's wasteful, useless bull shit.. Most people and websites, will have different explanations and pictures to distinguish between the types ... especially when it comes down to 3c/ 4A. Even if you use this system, and you find someone that has the same type as yours, it doesn't mean you all can use the same products or styles and have the same results. Most people have more than one hair type and in different spots, so rarely, if ever will you find an exact match to your "type"... Also some of the people depicted in the pictures have hair that has been curled with a curler or are wearing pieces IMHO.... so you have been warned..With that being said.. here are some links..

c/s ID. I'm most disturbed by how black women once again will use hair typing as a battlefield. It's not that serious. Learn YOUR hair. It's all beautiful and all unique.

First off, hey Izy!!

Yes, I definitely agree. There is almost elitism in hair typing..natural snobs is what I call them...The biggest focus should be the health and retention of your hair...especially when your hair type is is always subject to change depending on length, pregnancy, and other biological factors...I, however, understand the curiosity, so I say enjoy and love whatever is growing out of your scalp.

I know many natural product lines create "systems" based off alleged hair types. So when purchasing products look at ingredients, look at consistencies, take reviews into consideration, but take nothing as the "gospel". Depending on application and other factors, most things are trial and error...c'est la vie.

Ok at first I read the responses and wondered why they were a little fiesty.

Then I looked one of the sites. . .

Many women with Type 4 hair rely on chemical relaxers to make hair easier to control. In its natural states, sometimes Type 4 hair doesn't grow very long because every time you comb it, it breaks. (Of course, if you have dreadlocks and never comb them or keep them braided, your hair can and does grow quite long.)

Wow. . really. . :smh:

I had really never heard people refer to this until watching some of the youtube videos.

I agree with you. There's a girl on Youtube, don't know her screen name but she has a white boyfriend and will swear up and down she has 3c hair when in reality, it's more like 4A/4B. She got into an argument with the people commenting on her video about it. When I think about it, quite a few of the youtube chicks that rely on the hairtyping system have white BF's and I think it has affected them. One was saying that her BF said that our curly isn't the same because our curls "change directions":hmm: It's all another way to be divisive.

I also think that several of these hair boards that rely on the system have a alot of tex-laxed people too that are perpetrating.

I hope you find out the youtube name, I would love to watch it lol. And I also think there are tex-laxed girls and girls who claim natural...I was watching two youtube girls say " I only get my hair relaxed twice a year, the rest of the year I am natural" wtf.. I also remember Angie Stone saying that she is natural but had a texturizer..I remember Ashanti's interview in Honey or Sophisticate's Black Hair, saying she is natural cause she only gets touch ups on here edges lol...I have a feeling there are a lot more out there.. I don't care either way, but whatever you do, claim it and stand firm on it.

Okay here it is. She says that she has 3B hair and 4A in the middle. At end she even says she has 2B hair also. I'm like :hmm:

Later on, she did a video saying that she was leaving YouTube because of all the negative comments- but she stayed.

Some of the comments:

In your other video you say that having 4a/b hair is not a bad thing so why dont you consider that from what many of us can see you CLEARLY have type 4 hair ALL OVER YOUR HEAD. Your hair is nice but it does not look like 3b hair in the front or the back and you shouldn't take that as an insult because all hair is beautiful when healthy. Maybe you should go back and do more research and at least consider why so many people have said you dont have 3b hair?

must say i love the color and style your natural hair looks beautiful.

Your hair looks more 4b me. I have mixed textures and my 3a/3b strands are really almost straight BUT my 4b looks like your texture.

your hair isnt 3b O_o
3b hair is more loose and not coarse

your hair looks 4a all over

Some of her responses:

OMG IM SOOOOO TIRED OF PPL COMMENTING ON THIS VID WITH THIS SAME CRAP...DID U NOT SE MY VERY LAST VID ABOUT BOGUS YOUTUBE MEMBERS AND THEIR UNNECESSARY COMMENTS? PLZ GO VIEW IT B./C IT ADDRESSES WHY IM ANNOYED BY UR COMMENT....MY HAIR 3C 4A ITS IN MY HEAD SO I WUD KNOW....I DONT SEE WHY EVERYONE FEELS THE NEED FOR EVERYONE TO COMMENT ABOUT MY HAIR TYPE IN CORRECTION....WHEEEW

my hair is actually 3c 4a

Also thats not me spazzing thats me being annoyed by stupid ignorant, ridicluous un neccesary comments like from the person above and yours also....and stress in life oh I know how to deal with that its called prayer and meditation and letting the one most high handle it so plz dont worry about my personal life and trials....you know the reason I even sent u the link to 3c hair is that KNOWLEDGE IS THE CURE FOR IGNORANCE !!! Stay Blessed !

Hey ID!
Great thread and post. Like you said it's trial and error. I think that learning process is scary for sistas. Hopefully more thread and info like this will allay fears. Being natural is often about simplifying your life and hair, not making it more complicated or making other people rich based on false promises of having the hair you dream about. Stop dreaming, embrace the reality. And, have fun! It's hair, not nuclear energy.

MrsBCAA great videos!
