G1 Owners Unite! The Official G1/Android Thread..News/Apps/Features All In Here

Man Im rooted and I still have force close issues and a little lag from time to time. I run a shit load of widgets though, currently running 10 @ various sizes doing various things. I think alot of issues are a result of app conflicts.. like what makes me scratch my head is when I get a force close from the "alarm clock".. thats never active and I dont use it ever. Running DRC83.

OK FELLAS I THINK IM READY TO CROSS OVER TO THE DARKSIDE!!

Yep I think it hass become NECESSARY now that I Root my G1..the lagging is killing me..I don't know why it's happening I dont even have that much shit on my phone.

So can anybody put me on the most fail proof and CURRENT rooting method via youtube instructions and point me to smoothest running flash rom there is out there right now??? I will give it a try if it will improve my phoens performance.

is your G1 running smoothly (no lag or force closes) with whatever ROM you're using??

and can somebody give me a link to the latest and most accurate "how to root" video from youtube??? thanks

I get a every so often reboot, and The only lag I get is at startup cause I have so many damn apps. Other than that Cyanogen runs pretty damn good. If you choose to run a theme then you more tan likely will get force closes alot.

These are the instructions I used to ROOT my G1 and its the most detailed ive seen so far. YouTube instructions are TRASH compared to this

like I said, its NOT constant or normal but it deos happen. I could honestly run my phone using the standard software and be happy. Im still using the normal home screen/launcher instead of the one that camer with my rooted ROM. What I like the most is being able to get paid apps for free.. which you can do even if your phone isnt rooted. One app that requires you to be rooted and helps out a TON as far as performance is the overclock widget. When I rooted my phone I went with the ROM that was closes to the Tmobile supplied/standard just to get a feel for the concept and process. I can easily go back and do a wipe and change my ROM. I really wanted the motorola one but it didnt have alot of features activated @ the time and still had a few kinks since it was just launched. I may look @ doing that today depending on how far they have come with that ROM and how these games are today.

can you remove the factory installed apps once you rooted the phone i.e. Amazon Mp3, Google Voice, etc.?

i'm so pissed and jealous that verizon is gettn the glossy big screened motorolla droid and tmobile is stuck with the small (3.1 inch) screened non glossy motorolla cliq. This shyt has been a problem for a minute, while other carriers tend to focus not only on good phones but nicer looking phones. I overlooked a lot of shyt when I got my G1 a year ago. The fact that the screen wasn't as large as the iphone and the fact that the finishing of the phone wasn't glossy or fancy looking. I thought after some time, that would really change. Well i didn't purchase the mytouch 3g because to me it was basically the same look, with a couple of changes, but it wasn't glossy nor fancy. Now i'm lookn at the motorolla cliq, the features are nice but the looks sort of suck, it looks plain and the screen is only like 3.1 inches. :smh::smh::smh: To make matters worse it the specs can't fk with verizon's motorolla droid. The specs on the motorolla droid are better than the iphone and the screen is 3.5 inches. I don't know why tmobile has this thang for not really caring about stylish appearances of their phones. Not only the appearance but the specs aren't improving very much from new phone to new phone. I'm ready for a new phone but i'll have to pay full price for my next phone unless i wait another year. If their not coming out with another android phone in the next 2 months i'll have to go ahead and buy that damn motorolla cliq, but this is a disappointment, that all these other carriers keep gettn the better looking phones and now that other carriers are fkn with android, it's even worse that others carriers are getting better android phones than tmobile, the first company to carry android.:smh:

From what ive seen...No you cant...unless you do it through USB ADB push but i dont you can from even doing that

o and for everybody having all those forced close problems after rooting.....................i hope b4 u flashed u swiped twice. one of the swipes should have been manual (giving commands). Number 2, having a bunch of apps can cause conflicts. Some of apps your running....if u go to the homepages some of the developers have stated not to use their apps with certain apps, themes, etc....For example, if your running 2 different missed call apps then naturally there's probably gonna be a conflict..... If your running 2 different text message apps then there could be a conflict. If your running a theme then go out and install dx, ahome, or anything theme related u have probably created a conflict. Cyanogen has stated don't run certain themes and apps with his roms. All developers have....shyt may work off top, but could cause irritating conflicts. Some widgets conflict certain themes, many people are running apps that do the same things currents apps or themes do, and it causes conflict. Many hacked (paid apps u got for free) can cause conflicts under certain situations. The only time i really get forced closes now is when using Copilot Live 8, also on reboot it says force close or wait. I click wait, that little bug isn't gonna stop, its a result of tooooo much shyt going on when the phone starts up...........too many widgets, home screens, themes, etc....are trying to open and start up at the same time. The phone wasn't really built to be rushed like that. There are settings to help solve that issue just rebootn a computer and u have a million programs running at start up. If your force closes are gettn that constant and irritating, evaluate the apps your using, possible theme, rom, etc....I always swipe twice when flashing a new rom, 1 swipe from the cyanogen recovery and the other done manually.

Good Advice bro

well the only phones i feel are better than tmobiles androids are the iphone and verizons new motorolla droid. Really most of these fly lookn phones other carriers are droppn aren't open source and can't do what tmo's androids can do. Blackberry is way behind Android with applications. The only reason i'm pissed with tmo is because they let verizon get the best android phone yet. I don't understand why they gave us the generic lookn cliq but verizon got the nice lookn droid. I love my plan, unlimted minutes and everything, just pissed about verizon gettn the motorolla droid.

Much props Zei, i still haven't checked through all the pages i missed yet, gonna see what all i missed.

man I'm getting the droid. I switched to even more plus b/c I was told by 5 reps that my remaining 10 months would be voided. so i'm like ok. i have two lines one for me and one for my mom i gave her the unlimited talk and lowered my plan with unlimited text and web and 500 mins.

tell me why i call today b/c i see t-mobile g1 unlimited plan on my account so i call and say why am i being charged for two unlimited internet plans...dude was like nah u not being charged it just had to be worded that way...(hmmm)...so i ask for confirmation that i'm on even more plus and off contract he is like no u r on contract but playing the non-contract fee..(the fuck?!) ...so i talk to dude he goes talks to his manager and is like him and the other reps aren't sure how to handle ppl on contracts switching to even more plus....i'm like thats my fault?

earlier i put my down payment on the droid at best buy since its cheaper than verizon with the rebate being instant and i got a 50 dollar gift card so the phone is only gonna cost me 150 bucks.
I'm gonna try to get out of t-mobile if i can't imma suspend my account for 90 days and pay the eft and just wait for my next line to expire in august and leave tmo all together...

too many billing weirdness...like i went to canada didn't use my phone soon as i crossed into the us border i use it...i got hit with 50 bucks for using it in the USA!...i look at the map and it says t-mobile roaming...they don't have full coverage in parts of this country and if u use your phone there you get hit with roaming charges!

shit is slick as hell...i look at the verizon map and they have upstate fully covered.

So i'mma go to verizon and the droid and use that for 20 months til i see a hotter android device on vzw...since vze will be switching to LTE/4G within the next 2-3 years might as well get in at the ground floor with a better network.

I like tmo but they be screwing up bills i never left b/c i have no other interest in other companies til the droid and tmo dropped the ball not getting the droid. Your right about them being ok with the style of phone they get.
I want a high end phone thats not a blackberry. Tmo doesn't show faith in their phones and do gimmick promo's like project dark to get customers

vzw goes and gets the best android to date and the only device that can go head to head with iphone within a month. Tmo announced the cliq in sept and it won't be out til nov...vzw announced the droid last week and it comes out friday. That tells u about the business style of both companies.

tmo is cool but i want a more professional provider paying a lil more is fine with me since i'd rather be stabbed in the front than in the back and tmo has been stabbing me in the back with these random hidden fees and roaming costs. if your not in a major city tmo is useless if u travel to a city thats not big tmo is useless.

friday night i should be a vzw customer with a droid.

dang hate 2 see u go, u offered alot of info in this thread, i've never had any problems with my billing and i've been on tmo for 2 years. Well i had a couple of small problems with different reps telln me a credit was being put on and it wasn't, but for the most part it's been smooth sailing. I do know for my current plan, if i was on verizon i'd be paying about $50 extra a month. But, verizon has much better 3g. I don't think i'm leavn tmo anytime soon because of the money i save, but I don't understand the business moves. They were the first to drop an android phone but seem to be behind in the movement. As far as specs go, there isn't a dramatic improvement going from g1 to mytouch 3g to motorolla cliq, then the fact that screen is only 3.1 inches. Like i said if tmo isn't droppn any new Android devices in the next couple of months i'll go ahead and get the cliq, but i'm disappointed in it's specs---(there good but don't match up to the top 5 smart phones) the screen is the biggest disappointment to me.......only 3.1 inches:smh::smh: then the boring finish, dang i thought tmobile wouldn't learned by now...the shiny textured phones are more intriguing and selling better than the dull finishes of their last 2 Androids. But, dang the motorolla Droid looks crazy, wish there was a way i could get it to work on tmo's network. Verizon shyted on tmo and other carriers unveiling the Droid. Initial sales may not be groundbreaking because they haven't had enough time to promote it but this phone looks like it's the truth. If u get the droid let us know how it compares to the g1 or your current device. Some of us may get so envious we might have to politely boot your azz out of this thread. :D

ok i just watched a few vids of the cliq i guess it's not as bad lookn as i thought, damn that green home screen with all those widgets cluttered up is too much for a nga. Naturally i know i could change the wallpaper and probably move some of those widgets. I'm curious to see what new programs are available, all they keep promoting is that myspace, twitter, and facebook shyt. There's no doubt that if tmo doesn't drop another android in the next 2 months i'll have to go ahead and get the cliq, but verizon, xingular, and sprint all have better lookn phones with larger screens. I am sold on android and don't plan on buying another smart phone that isn't android.

ok back to the G1!

I'll prolly keep my 2nd line on tmo since it offers no problems I just dont like how they do things and dont tell costumers and not training employees properly in your big promotion is unprofessional to me. if they improve in 2 yrs I may be back but if not I'll stick to vzw they charge a lot but have a better network and their LTE wll be gsm based so I'll be able to use my phone on world bands in a couple years.

TMO has no info on the g1 v2 and the cliq is the same as the g1 just optimized a bit not a huge leap to me they will prolly drop a good 2.0 phone but the droid is just so different all metal n glass throwback look n defiant. For VZW's opening android phone its impressive and a game changer. Moto used TMO as a test unit as did HTC(the hero on sprint apparently shits on the G1/mytouch) and tmo was ok with that...something wrong with that thinking.

I'll let y'all know how the droid is.

yes the design of the Droid is amazing, don't know why tmo keeps comn out with dull phones while other carriers are dropping glossy innovative lookn phones. I sometimes wonder since tmobiles prices are much cheaper and since tmo has flex pay for bad credit customers, i wonder is that the reason why we get the lesser phones. Like am I a member of a low budget carrier that happens to be nationwide? It's like tmobile is American made cars and Verizon and Xingular are foreign cars. Though American made cars have improved they still don't match up to the luxury, design and longevity of foreign cars. I really thought tmobile would have caught on by now, but they seem to be very happy puttn out small upgrades.

A 3.7-inch, 16:9 touch screen with 480 x 854 resolution. A 5 megapixel camera with 4x zoom, autofocus, and dual LED flash. A 1400 mAh Li-ion battery for up to 385 minutes of usage time and 270 hours standby. A 550MHz processor (marginally better). A pre-installed 16GB microSD card. Bluetooth, 802.11b/g WiFi, and a micro USB port. Six ounces of weight spread out over a 2.4 x 4.6 x 0.5-inch body. We know, you were wanting the Motorola Droid's price and release date, too, but that's the one detail not on this page, we're afraid.

Yea man, Tmo should at least have phones[and commercials] to compliment the new price plan...and then to have another carrier show them up when they started the shit...HA!!!!!

If your having alotta lag problem and shortage on battery...you need to download "Taskiller" or "Advanced task manager" This will kill all of your background apps that ur not using.

Another app to help you at bootup is "Stsrtup Auditor" Its basically what it sounds like...select and change what apps and programs run at boot time

LMAO...dont hurt em bro

Plz do...i wish it wasnt GSM like sprint...maybe someone could get it unlocked and use it on sprint

what does the theme look like?

They have pictures in the links I provided

I just switched ROMs to JF v1.51 CRB43 ADP1.5.

Havent had a chance to use it yet but I can say that once you have gone thru the original root process.. switching is no problem @ all. Im about to install the HTC Hero v1.5.0 theme and play with it a bit.

The Sprint experience for android[Hero] have been ripped and ready for install

did i dl this too late? the Sprint TV isn't working, I see some said it worked but stopped working on their phones then a couple of people on another site says it still works. Damn I was planning on stunting on some of my coworkers with this shyt.
How does the NFL joint run on ya'll phones? It's real sketchy on my phone, a lot of pauses and bad quality. Hope somebody comes up with a hack so I can watch sprint Tv. Thanks for this one! i'll keep trying.

Those nat service providers' fears were actually quite justified. Google today unveiled Maps Navigation (beta, of course), an extremely upgraded version of its current Maps software that'll be free and, from what we understand, available by default on all Android 2.0 devices. All the usual Maps features are present, including the ability to search by name of business and have it suggest the closest matches, both semantically and geographically, and traffic data. We're also now looking at turn-by-turn navigation, female robotic voice and all, and integration with satellite and street view, the latter of which will be able to show you what lane you need to be in when exiting the highway, for example. Instead of just searching nearby, it'll also now search along the route for when you're looking for upcoming gas stations or fast food joints that won't take you too far off your beaten path. Select addresses can be added to the Android home screen as their own icons, and given the limits of living in the cloud, trips and their respective visual feeds will be cached just in case you hit dead spots along the way. Still no multitouch, but as VP of Engineering Vic Gundotra noted at a press conference, there's nothing stopping a company like HTC from adding that feature à la Sense UI.

In addition to demonstrating the basic navigational functions, Gundotra also showcased a new user interface that appears when the device hooked up into a car dock, one that is intended for use "at an arm's length away." Essentially, it means much larger iconography and a convenient "voice search" option front and center. We later got confirmation from a Google product manager that car dock detection was definitively a hardware-based feature, which we take to mean Android devices currently on the market won't necessarily have the same convenience. If Android 2.0 takes off how Google (and Verizon!) hope it does, companies like TomTom and Garmin are going to seriously need to worry about their bottom line.

Game Changer......

dang looks dope.

Just got in from work...ill comment later on the previous posts but here's the latest Droid phone from Sprint

Samsung Moment

http://now.sprint.com/android/index.php?pid=4&phone=2&id9=vanity:moment

looks a little nicer than the cliq, but it looks like the cliqs specs might be a little better.

I just switched ROMs to JF v1.51 CRB43 ADP1.5.

let us know how it turns out Dro, also does that one have bluetooth and the google experience?

Sup Royal?? I d/l the Sprint pkg as soon as it was posted.. the tv never worked. The only thing worth while to me was the nav. Tmobile already has a good NBA app. I love the ROM and theme so far. I originally posted HTC Hero v1.5.0 but I had to end up using HTC Hero v1.4.5 for compatibility reasons. I couldnt get 1.5 to load past the G1 screen.. 1.4.5 works like a CHARM! I have the bluetooth option but I havent been anywhere to test the functionality yet. To be honest, I NEVER use it so it wouldnt be a deal breaker, my car has it built in so I will check it for you later. I originally rooted to DRC83, which was built almost totally off the Tmobile standard so this ROM is a night and day difference for me as far as performance, Im definitely seeing the difference and benefit now. DRC83 was just the safe route for my first time rooting because it was so close to the normal ROM. What is the Google Experience.. that me be something Im lacking. How do people take screen shots of their own phone?

So would you say that the current ROM that your using now is better than cyan's. Im ready for a change TBH

Well I was running DRC83, which I dont even believe is one of cyan's. It just seemed like a preloaded app version of the Tmobile default. If it was a cyan rom then hell yea, this rom runs smooth and is blazing fast compared to the modded rom and the factory rom I had in the past.

Damn, I was trying to run and install Apps2SD but that looks like the most confusing shit in the world.

that's y i like cyanogen, apps2sd is automatic, i didn't have to install that radio thing or the spl or whatever it's called. I think most on xda agree cyan is the most smoothest running rom, but hero and a couple of others have the coolest widgets and things. the bluetooth i'm referring to is the regular bluetooth that goes in your ear, i think the first couple of hero's didn't allow it but I was wondering if u can use the bluetooth now, since its updated a few times since then. the google experience is the programs Cyanogen isn't allowed to include with his roms anymore. Google Maps, Youtube, Market, Gtalk, etc...

I get off work and there's an x in my bar, no service, i reboot and all that bs. No luck, so I rush to the tmo store since they close at 7. i'm thinking i need a new sim card or something, there's like 15 people in the store, dude is telling us, servers are down all across America (it was about 6:50 when i got there. While i was there i decided to take a look at the cliq, since i hadn't been inside a tmobile store in some months. Next to the click there's this phone HTC Pro 2, now that shyt looks more like my speed. I wasn't impressed with the cliq but the htc pro 2 looks nice. I know i'm probably super late because i think i've heard other people mention the htc pro. So how long has this phone been out, it's Android right? Guess i'll do a search on the htc pro 2. I was feeln that one, but the damn price is ridiculous, $399 with a 2 year warranty, $599 without.........................If i hear good reviews on it, i'll fk with that if tmo isn't droppn anything new.

Royal u may want to wait to get a cliq at least until early 2010...
http://www.androidguys.com/2009/11/02/gsm-droid-caught-on-film-headed-to-t-mobile/

and the xperia x10 apparently runs on tmobile's bands.

I would stick with tmo but after the outage today and other stuff i'm gonna get a jump on the droid and use the outage as my excuse since honestly i have been gettin cut calls and no texts for the past few weeks but i thought it was just my g1 now i see its tmo's network...and i dig the the droid's 80's look.

but it looks as tho you may have two great choices coming to you.
