Vidic dreams of playing for Barcelona, says agent

nemanjavidicarmsaloft2009_275x155.jpg

Manchester United centre-back Nemanja Vidic is reportedly on the radar of Barcelona and would love to play for the Spanish club one day, according to his agent.

The Serbian has been one of the star performers in the Premier League and is one of the first names on the teamsheet for United manager Sir Alex Ferguson.

The 27-year-old defender, who joined the Red Devils from Spartak Moscow in January 2006, has been linked with a transfer to Europe this summer and, although the Old Trafford outfit are reluctant to let him leave, the defender's agent has hinted he could be keen on a move.

"Vidic would be delighted to play at Barca as his dream is to go to the Spanish league," Paolo Fabbri told Catalan radio station RAC1.

"We have to analyse the situation but, being realistic, things are complicated at the moment.

"The team just lost Cristiano Ronaldo and [Carlos] Tevez and they do not want to lose another important piece of their starting XI once again."

Why Donovan could join the enemy

landon-donovan.jpg

Landon Donovan -- here being pelted with beer thrown by fans at last week's World Cup qualifier -- is a universal villain in Mexico.

MEXICO CITY -- As fate would have it, Landon Donovan scored his first international goal against Mexico, in a 2-0 friendly win in 2000. Unsurprisingly, he's been reviled down here ever since.

There are many specific reasons for Donovan's being regarded with contempt, from his infamous urination in Guadalajara to his reportedly shouting "¿Donde está el México?" during the U.S.' 2-0 win in the '02 World Cup. Plus, he's constantly needling the Mexicans with razor-tongued comments like this one he said after I asked him a few weeks ago about the difficulties of playing at Estadio Azteca: "When we play Mexico anywhere else in the world, I have no doubt we beat them."

The Mexicans also despise Donovan because he has a knack of beating their beloved El Tri. Donovan has suited up 11 times against Mexico, and the U.S. is 7-2-2 in those matches. Furthermore, Donovan has scored four goals against Mexico, including the header to ice the win in the World Cup round-of-16 match in South Korea and a penalty in the '07 CONCACAF Gold Cup final.

This success, of course, has also led the Mexicans' affording Donovan something else: respect. Just how much has been one of the pleasant surprises of this trip. Only in Mexico, I guess, could an American player's every word be printed and parsed ad nauseam by everyone from TV commentators to taxi drivers. Everything Donovan said leading up to last week's World Cup qualifier at the Azteca was fuel for discussion and argument.

And during the U.S. team's player introductions before kickoff, the loudest response was reserved for No. 10. Boos and whistles rained down like beer would later in the match, but a fair amount of cheers rang out as well -- and not just from the 500 or so Yanks in the corner of the upper stands.

Which has led me to one conclusion: Donovan needs to come play his club ball in Mexico ¿Loco? Perhaps. But it would also be the perfect move. And there is even a team already crying out for a game-changer (in every sense of the word) like Donovan: Club América.

Donovan has made a lot of noise lately about leaving MLS. He figures the time has come to test himself at a higher level (and make some more dinero at the same time).

His loan move to Bayern Munich this past winter made one thing clear: He does not belong in Germany. He obviously would fit better someplace where his crafty counterattack style and laid-back SoCal demeanor are accepted and encouraged. Many people have mentioned Spain or Italy.

But the truth is, the Mexican Primera División is perfect for Donovan. First of all, he could probably triple his salary right away. But more important, the Mexican playing style fits him to a T. Technical and possession-oriented, there is less defensive pressure on the ball than in MLS and more encouragement of individual talent and quick attacking moves. Donovan would thrive on the field.

Off the field, Donovan, who already speaks decent Spanish, would be an immediate icon: the first gringo superstar in the Mexican leagues. Several Americans have done well in Mexico, including former Cruz Azul captain Cle Kooiman and former Pumas All-Star Mike Sorber. There is also the current crop of Americans of Mexican descent, including Pachuca's José Francisco Torres, San Luis' Michael Orozco (who scored on Sunday, by the way), Tigres' Edgar Castillo and Indios de Juárez's Marco Vidal.

But Donovan is on a whole other level. He is a globally recognized star, the leading scorer in U.S. history. Considering his controversial history with Mexico, his signing would either spark riots or fiestas. Probably both, as it would be both a form of treason and yet also a kind of rapprochement. Which is why Donovan's Mexican adventure would be so enticing to a club like América.

América is one of Mexican fútbol's giants, of course, whose home stadium is the Azteca. Winners of 10 league championships and five CONCACAF titles, the club long has positioned itself as CONCACAF's most international club -- it was the first Mexican side to play outside the country -- and its deep-pocketed owners often have courted controversial personalities, such as Cuauhtémoc Blanco and Luis Roberto "Zague" Alves.

Las Águilas have fallen on hard times lately, though. They finished eighth overall in the '09 Clausura, 13th in the '08 Apertura and 18th -- bottom of the table -- in the '08 Clausura. If they don't have a good season in the current '09 Apertura (they're in seventh place after getting their first win this past weekend), they'll be strong candidates for relegation, even with the Byzantine complexities of the Mexican relegation system, which are blatantly designed to protect the big clubs.

Relegation for América would be an unmitigated disaster, not only for the club but also for the league. The club obviously needs to do something. Something big. Aside from acquiring someone like Lionel Messi, what would be bigger than signing Mexico's most hated adversary?

"He would be one of the best players in the Primera División," an América fan told me when I mentioned the hypothetical move. He was smiling and seemed ready to see it happen immediately. "Then we sign [Juan Román] Riquelme, bring back Blanco and win the championship."

Wenger blasts "selfish" England over Walcott pick

walcott_CarlDeSouza.jpg

Arsene Wenger has blasted the decision to press Theo Walcott into action for the both the senior and under-21 England teams this summer as "selfish''.

Arsenal boss Wenger has also warned that Walcott's injury absence, which the Frenchman attributes in part to his demanding international schedule, will have an effect on England as well as the Gunners.

Walcott turned out for Fabio Capello in the World Cup qualifiers against Kazakhstan and Andorra in June and was then selected by coach Stuart Pearce for the European Under-21 Championships in Sweden.

The forward has already missed the start of the Premier League campaign with a back strain and his continued absence will also rule him out of England's September 9 trip to face Croatia in Zagreb.

Wenger said: "It was a selfish decision by Pearce, he just wanted the results. I spoke to Capello and him and expressed my point of view to them.

"It was difficult because I couldn't really prevent Theo playing for the under-21s.''

"Now he is still unfit because he has not had a proper preparation for the new season.

"I'm not so much angry as frustrated. I cannot see the logic of it. Now both England and Arsenal have a handicap. It's why I didn't want him to play for the under-21s. After that we were under pressure to rush him back and he got hurt again.

"If he did not get back to us until July 29 and the season starts on August 15, how can he be fit in time? I knew I would have to start this season without him.''

lol... Man City looked good in the first half but the 2nd half the defense was weak. They generate a shitload of chances on offense though...they should be exciting to watch this year. They might just break into the big 4.

Impressive Altidore delighted to finally make bow

Jozy Altidore is determined to make up for lost time after finally landing in the Premier League.

jozyaltidorehcfc20090822_275x155.jpg

The American striker made a swift impact on his Hull debut as he came off the bench to set up Kamel Ghilas for the only goal in a 1-0 defeat of Bolton.

It ended more than a week of frustration for the 19-year-old after being forced to miss the Tigers' season-opening games against Chelsea and Tottenham.

Altidore was kicking his heels in New York after returning home for an international fixture but running into bureaucratic problems trying to get back.

Altidore, who is on a season-long loan from Villarreal, said: "I had to travel a lot, back and forth in the States and to different countries to play games.

"I then had a team-mate that got the swine flu, which complicated things even more, and then there were visa problems with my passport.

"In terms of complications and frustrations I've had it all but when I got here there was nothing that was going to keep me from playing.''

Altidore finally arrived back in London on Friday morning, eight days later than planned, and was helicoptered straight back to Hull by the club.

He admitted there were times when he felt he would not get the international clearance he needed to return and start his Hull career.

"I was losing faith, I felt it wasn't going to go through and it was all going to be for nothing,'' he said. "But everyone did a great job to try to get me here and I really appreciate it.''

Altidore's introduction after an hour at the KC Stadium transformed a scrappy game in which Bolton had enjoyed the better chances.

The contest became more open and Altidore spurned a fine opportunity to open his account for the club while fellow new signing Ghilas also rattled the woodwork.

Altidore said: "It was incredible. I couldn't sleep beforehand and I was really excited to get here. It was great, all I expected it to be and more.

"I just can't wait to continue on with the club and to play more games like this. It was fantastic.''

City confirm signing of former Gunners star

Manchester City have announced the signing of former Arsenal and Barcelona defender Sylvinho on a one-year contract.

sylvinho20090824barca_275x155.jpg

The left-back, who has won six caps for Brazil, joins Mark Hughes' side having been released from his contract at Camp Nou at the end of last season.

Sylvinho started the club's 2-0 victory over Manchester United in the Champions League final in Rome but was deemed surplus to requirements by Josep Guardiola.

The 35-year-old has now been afforded a surprise return to the Premier League having played for Arsenal between 1999 and 2001, and will compete with Wayne Bridge for a place in Hughes' new-look City side.

"Sylvinho has a wealth of experience at the very top level, having represented Brazil and played for some of the very top clubs in Europe," Hughes told the club's official website.

"When the chance presented itself to bring him to Manchester City as a free agent I saw it as representing excellent business for us. Sylvinho won the European Cup last season at Barcelona and he will strengthen our defensive options."

Sylvinho joined Arsenal for a fee in the region of £4 million when signing from Corinthians in 1999 but the emergence of Ashley Cole saw him join Celta Vigo two years later.

After joining Barcelona in 2004, he won three La Liga titles and two European Cups at Camp Nou and could now make his City debut in the Carling Cup tie against Crystal Palace on Thursday.

On a season-long loan from Spanish club Villarreal, the 19-year-old striker fired home from 30 yards in the 42nd minute for Hull's second against the League One team on Tuesday.

After his arrival a week ago, Altidore set up Hull's winner on his Premier League debut in a 1-0 victory over Bolton.

Messi voted best player of 2009 Champions League

12363606320.jpg

MONACO (AP) -Barcelona's Lionel Messi was chosen the best player of the 2008-09 Champions League on Thursday.

The Argentina forward was voted the UEFA club player of the year by coaches of the 15 other teams who reached the knockout rounds of the tournament.

"It is an enormous joy to be able to receive such an important award as this,'' Messi said. "And it's also a pleasure to be able to thank all the people who voted for me and who decided I should get this award.''

Messi scored nine times in Barcelona's march to the title, including a 70th-minute header in the final to seal a 2-0 win against Manchester United.

At the draw ceremony for this season's competition, Messi was voted best forward and teammate Xavi Hernandez was chosen best midfielder.

Manchester United's Edwin van der Sar was picked as best goalkeeper and John Terry of Chelsea as best defender.

Messi succeeded Cristiano Ronaldo, the world player of the year, in winning the UEFA award, and became the second Argentine winner after Fernando Redondo in Real Madrid's Champions League-winning season of 2000.

Bayern close to signing Real Madrid's Robben

Robben0201_468x314.jpg

BERLIN (AP) -- Bayern Munich is close to signing Dutch international winger Arjen Robben from Real Madrid.

"It is correct that we are interested in signing Arjen Robben," General manager Uli Hoeness said Thursday.

"He will undergo medical checks tonight or tomorrow morning," Hoeness said, adding that the two sides were in agreement on "most points."

Hoeness said Robben could even make his debut on Saturday against defending champion Wolfsburg.

"Under the best scenario, he could be on the transfer list tomorrow and theoretically he could play Saturday," Hoeness said.

Spanish National Radio said Robben flew to Munich on Thursday to seal the deal. At Madrid airport he told reporters he'd prefer to stay with the Spanish club.

"I didn't want to go," Robben said. "It's all I can say to the fans. But the club wanted to sell me and well (there's been) a lot of lies and in the end I also have to decide for myself because I also want to play."

There was no mention of the deal on Real Madrid's Web site and no one at the club was available for comment.

Bayern Munich is off to a rocky start this season, winless in its first three league games and with just two points from a possible nine, under new Dutch coach Louis van Gaal.

I don't know if it'll be a cakewalk, but we'll make it to the next round. Looking at the draw there's gonna be some real good games as long as the road team doesn't score in the first leg and try to sit back for the second leg. That shit pisses me off :angry::angry::angry:

Barcelona win Super Cup thanks to late Pedro Rodríguez goal

Pedro-001.jpg

Barcelona's forward Pedro Rodríguez celebrates after scoring the winner against Shakhtar Donetsk. Photograph: Valery Hache/AFP/Getty Images

Barcelona's expensive new signing Zlatan Ibrahimovic failed to impress as the Champions League winners claimed a late victory over Shakhtar Donetsk in the Uefa Super Cup in Monaco.

Ibrahimovic, who moved from Internazionale for £40m plus Samuel Eto'o, was completely overshadowed by Lionel Messi, who created the only goal for Pedro Rodríguez in the 115th minute.

Barcelona dominated on a bobbly pitch at the Stade Louis II Stadium, about which they had complained, against an unadventurous Shakhtar side. The Ukrainian club did not create a single opening in normal time while Barça, who were missing the injured Andrés Iniesta, at least showed some intent.

Thierry Henry looked alert and he was the first to threaten, a trademark dipped shoulder confusing his marker before he struck a rising shot which just over the crossbar.

The first half, however, was disappointing and there was little to lift spirits in the second. Dani Alves shot hopelessly into the stands and then Ibrahimovic produced his major contribution to the game, falling under Olexiy Gai's challenge and bringing a yellow card for the defender.

With the game drifting towards extra-time, Barcelona tried to step up a gear. Messi hit a fierce left-foot effort that Andriy Pyatov could only parry and when the ball drifted out to Henry by the left touchline he took deliberate aim to loop a shot into the far corner but the Shakhtar goalkeeper stretched just high enough to turn it over.

Messi lit up the match with a mazy dribble past four challenges only to be thwarted at the very last moment. Furious, he became involved in a pushing match with Oleksandr Kucher and both were booked.

As the match moved into extra-time Victor Valdés made his first save, diving low to keep out Julius Aghahowa's goal-bound shot.

Bojan Krkic, on for Henry, could have wrapped it up with two chances before, having barely threatened, the Ukrainian side were denied a blatant penalty when Ilsinho was felled.

Shakhtar's coach, Mircea Lucescu, stormed on to the pitch in fury but it was all in vain as Messi's brilliant pass set up Rodríguez for a late winner.

Arjen Robben scores twice on debut as Bayern Munich finally get off the mark

• Robben's brace helps Bayern to first win of the season
• Leverkusen move three points clear at the top of the table

Bayern-Munichs-Arjen-Robb-001.jpg

Arjen Robben made a dream debut for Bayern Munich as he scored twice in their 3-0 win over Bundesliga champions Wolfsburg. The former Chelsea and Real Madrid winger came off the bench at half-time with his side already 1-0 up thanks to a strike from Mario Gomez.

The Dutch international combined well with Franck Ribery to seal Bayern's first win of the season to take them up to seventh in the table and erase memories of the club's worst start to a league season in 43 years.

Wolfsburg started brightly but the home time reacted well and went ahead thanks to Gomez in the 27th minute. Wolfsburg failed to properly clear a corner and Hamit Altintop's long-range shot was only parried by Diego Benaglio to the Gomez, who welcomed the invitation for his second goal of the season.

It stayed that way until the second half when Ribery, who also came off the bench on his comeback from injury, sent Robben on his way into the left-hand side of the penalty area and the Dutchman's shot took a slight deflection off Andrea Barzagli on its way past Benaglio into the back of the net.

Wolfsburg tried to fight back when Dzeko hit the post in the 72nd minute, and moments later, Philipp Lahm had to make a goalline clearance to prevent Grafite from scoring.

But Robben settled Bayern's nerves with his second goal on his debut with Ribery again involved as the Bavarians launched a quick counter-attack which Robben concluded with a low shot underneath Benaglio to seal Bayern's first win of the season in style.

Elsewhere, Bayer Leverkusen came from behind to beat Bochum 2-1 and open a three-point lead at the top of the Bundesliga. Bochum took the lead when defender Manuel Friedrich deflected a shot by Joel Epalle into his own net, but Friedrich made amends by heading in the equaliser shortly before half-time.

Stefan Kiessling drove in a right-foot shot from a cross by Toni Kroos in the 68th minute for his fourth goal in four games to ensure that 64-year-old Jupp Heynckes, who took over at Leverkusen after guiding Bayern in the final five games of last season, is enjoying a good start as the oldest coach in the division.

Schalke could not stay with the leaders after they were defeated for the first time this season, losing 1-0 at home to promoted Freiburg. South Korea forward Cha Du-ri's solo goal being the difference between the two sides.

Hoffenheim recorded their first win of the season with a 1-0 victory in Hannover, while Eintracht Frankfurt and Borussia Dortmund played out a 1-1 draw.Mohamed Zidan put visitors ahead in the 62nd minute but Eintracht striker Ioannis Amanatidis equalized six minutes later.

Stuttgart were held to a 0-0 draw at home by promoted Nuremberg.

Iniesta and Marquez to miss Barca's La Liga opener

Injured Barcelona pair Andres Iniesta and Rafael Marquez have not made sufficient progress to be available for the champions' opening La Liga match against Sporting Gijon on Monday.
Click here to find out more!

Spain midfielder Iniesta is recovering from a thigh injury and Mexico defender Marquez has been out with a calf problem, although the club said on its website that both were able to train as normal on Sunday.

Barca will also be without Lionel Messi because the Argentina forward is on international duty and Iceland's Eidur Gudjohnsen has not been included in the squad while he seeks to resolve his future with the club, they added.

Coach Pep Guardiola told a news conference the players were feeling the strain after their exertions in Monaco where they beat Shakhtar Donetsk 1-0 in the European Super Cup on Friday.

Playing extra time in the heat and humidity and the heavy state of the pitch in the Louis II stadium had sapped their energy, he said.

"We have conducted tests individually to see how they are," he said. "The level of fatigue is very high."

Guardiola added that the imminent arrival of Shakhtar defender Dmytro Chygrynskiy meant the squad was "virtually complete" and denied media reports that said Barca were poised to sign Brazilian forward Robinho from Manchester City.

FC Barcelona striker Bojan Krkic was key in the 3-0 win over Sporting Gijon this evening scoring his first goal of the 2009/2010 season but unfortunately suffered an injury late in the match.
Bojan was injured in the 80th minute when he was going for the ball and lost his footing.

Immediately following the match Bojan underwent a medical and it was discovered that he had suffered a muscle tear and will need to be sidelined for fifteen to twenty days.

The team will be off for the international break before their second La Liga match on September 13 against Getafe.

In other injury news defensive back Maxwell was also substituted after suffering an injury in the 57th minute of the match.

Medical results after the match showed that Maxwell had not suffered any damage and would be able to return to the team after a few days rest.
