G1 Owners Unite! The Official G1/Android Thread..News/Apps/Features All In Here

i aint even read through this thread yet but i had to show love before the thorough breakdown...good lookin on making this right here, wonder why that thought never crossed my mind...

hit youtube n type rooting g1

Question after u rooted could u install apps from the market? n what rom did u use? Hero? Rosie or Ion? Or Jesusfreak?
no problem installing apps.. if a custom rom has an issue with the market it has been fixed..

G1 for $49.99 (click on Cheap Cellphones on the right)

yeah thats a good deal, but the 100 bucks web discount drops off everytime u try to order with flexpay acct.. it was working for some people..

I'm a little lost here. Creed, Disavowed, or anyone else for that matter, can you explain to me the difference between a rom (Rosie, Hero, etc) and an openhome??

From what I'm getting a rom changes the UI of the OS. Does an 'open home" do that as well? Also, can you add or install a rom (rosie or hero) without rooting your G1?

Here is the HTC Hero Theme 1.2 For the Android G1.

Give me about an hour and so that I can download, install and test.

Open Home(what I use) is just like a skin over the UI some adds stuff like a task manager and screenshot app and gives u the ability to use a custom keyboard for on screen.

A Rom changes ur entire OS...some Rom's use a better camera some a better messenger most are faster and have been tweaked to speed up but remain stable...basically its like adding a modified OS if your familiar with Linux its just like that just applied to a mobile. For example one guy added Flash to his rom(I think all have flash but I know for sure one does)...they add stuff not found in stock and just make it better.

If u root u learn terminal if u want u can remove all the stock n use new apps like me I'd remove the stock messenger n use Handcent sms...

Open Home is just window dressing it looks nice n has different themes to it but it dosnt change the OS

ROM's are the OS with themes built in.

havent rooted my g1....only real advantage of rooting for me would be the wi fi teethering..... the app keep coming tho. name a few i got

Open Home - is basically a them for the homescreen ( currently only modifies the looks of the icons for your homescreen, the status bar, the apps icons in the system tray, and also the keyboard on some...
ROM - is a full system image - the whole operating system gets customized with various apps, icons, options, system functions, etc.. its like an update for windows 3.1 to windows xp or vista..
changing to a custom rom is good ( rooting process ) cause some of the developers and members of the android community find ways to make the official TMobile rom better before google/android team decide to release an update..
Ex) i was running cupcake almost 2 months before it was released to the public by google.

this is a theme, the pictures are from the actual Hero Rom, the bar on the bottom will be different..
So your phone has to be rooted to install this theme?
Yes and no... no for the open home themes, dxtop themes, and ahome themes... YES for custom themes like

all roms dont have themes built in..
most of the roms that are on the XDA site are OS variants that were made for other HTC devices that have or will have the android OS.. theres only a few Rom Cooks ( people that are making the roms usable on the G1 ) that use themes in the rom that they release.. someone else usually goes behind them and customizes the rom with a theme and then releases that..
Yeah most, if not all themes requires your phone to be rooted, you can get a skin for a unrooted phone, but a theme is a phone mod.
yeah all themes need root.. unless u go with ahome/dxtop/openhome from the market..

plenty more
running apps from the sdcard, and moving all cache to the sdcard were def my reason for rooting .. got tired of seeing low memory/storage messages during my first week having the G1.. havent seen a message say Low anything other than the battery since rooting my phone

real talk.. stay away from the hero roms for a while.. they all buggy, and have slow transition speeds back to the home screen.. use the Virtudude rogers rom.. all u need to do is root your phone..

after you get root, i recommend flashing a modded cupcake rom ( haykuro adp 1.5 ) or jesusfreke adp1.5..

once u get the root process done, then u need to verify what kind of device u have -
hold the camera button while turning the phone on to go into bootloader mode - look at the top and there will be some numbers and then u should see either DVT or PVT with some other numbers around it... PVT means u good to flash any rom u want without bricking it unless u mess up during the process.. DVT means u can only certain roms..
read more on the radio/spl issue - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=517593
but the files that u need are on the first post.. make sure u do it in the order it says to flash..
after you get the SPL and Radio done, then you can flash whatever roms u want..

ok what do I download from here?
http://www.getyourdroidon.com/cupcakedl.html

I see rogers build but where is virtualdudes?

Just tried to Root and I downloaded Telnet but when trying to connect I get this error.. "error while connecting to server:localhost/127.0.0.1:23 - Connection refused"

Please help!

stupid question..........
can i put a prepaid sim in a g1? i ordered one for 75$ and dont want a plan on it.... let me know wat up fam

Most likely if you put a prepaid card in it, you won't have the full capabilities of all its services.. probably just texting and calling..

Also, just for clarification, rooting is NOT the same as jailbreaking, right??

Also, how often do these roms get updates? Is there are possibilty that I could d/l the rosie rom and because I have cupcake, it not work well? I'm assuming because its a linux based community that people will periodically update the released rom's when they feel the need.

who and what site is that.. never heard of it.. but use the xda forums site for listings of roms.. that way u get the most recent update.. some of the roms on that site u posted might not be the most recent versions..

that happens.. when it says type Telnetd ( wait about 20 seconds then proceed ).. should work, if not just keep trying, thats the hardest part of the rooting process is getting telnet to connect.

yes u can use it.. data wont work, but if u have wifi u in business ( u will have to find someone that has a data plan to use their sim card so u can do the initial setup of the phone, then you can put the prepaid one back in the g1 and use it. )
pay the money for the data plan..

true indeed
so im best off getting one of them flex plans with it right?

not really..

rooting is jailbreaking.

i think the build u upgrade to will have cupcake but i could b wrong.

google updates like once every 6months,
developers in XDA community update like every week or every other day depending on what they figure out they can add to make the rom better..
if u can learn how to cook a rom ( via the internet ) you can make your own custom rom..

rooting is jailbreaking.

jailbreaking is a slang term = unlocking the device from carrier or factory settings..
rooting = gaining access to the core or root drive of system.. therefore allowing modifications.. ( android developers with google realized that there was a loophole in the system that would allow users to mod the phone and be able to run apps to the sdcard, also the possibility of someone making a program or app that could steal information from your phone.. they blocked it by blockking root access with the second update for the g1.. so be careful with which apps you download from non market sources..

but if u have wifi u in business ( u will have to find someone that has a data plan to use their sim card so u can do the initial setup of the phone, then you can put the prepaid one back in the g1 and use it. )

you mean if i have wifi i can connect, but i will have to use someone else's simcard?? im confused...

reboot the phone and try the telnet part again.. .also make sure u have the recovery keys on the same sdcard that your using.. it works.. just takes a few tries.. make type slow..
do it just like it says on this post - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=2864264&postcount=1

Restart your phone. Wait for your phone to start up fully and show the home screen.
After your phone starts up, hit the enter key twice, type "telnetd" and press enter. (Yes, it will start up a contact search, don't worry. Just type it.)
Download an Android "Telnet" application from the Market and connect to localhost.
If you connect successfully, you will have a root prompt "#".
