G1 Owners Unite! The Official G1/Android Thread..News/Apps/Features All In Here

myaccount.jpg

Remaining minutes and texts, a bill summary, online payment capabilities, and support information are a few of the features in T-Mobile's first official Android app, released today to thrifty G1ers everywhere.

My Account is a simple, obvious app, but one that could only ever come from the carrier itself. Luckily, T-Mobile had the sense and/or generosity to go ahead and make it, giving G1 owners full control over their T-Mo accounts through their handset. The app doesn't provide much information that you couldn't already access on the company's website, but this app makes it pretty and puts it where it should be: on the handset. My Account is available for free in the Android Marketplace. [AndroidandMe]

If you rejoiced at Google's re-rollout of the one-phone-number-for-life Grand Central service as Google Voice, you'll be pretty happy about GV—an app that can place outdoing calls using your universal number.

If you don't have GV on an Android phone, Google Voice must first call your cellphone and then connect you to the outgoing call that way. GV saves you this go-between by dialing out directly to your contacts' phone numbers using the Google Voice switchboard. Just set it to "Dial out" instead of "Call back" and you can more easily use your consolidated number for outgoing calls.

Sending text messages works in a similar fashion, only
GV is developed by a third party, so if Google changes up the way the system works, the app may break. But until then, it's a convenient setup for those hoping to consolidate lots of phone numbers into a single Google Voice number.

This week's Android news on Giz:

the g1 v.2 thing confuses me b/c it seems htc which made the g1 isn't making the next version which makes no sense but who knows...

I heard they may announce the moto phone 2moro since its ready to launch b4 fall but so many rumors about bigfoot one side says its a moto the other says samsung other says its htc...problem is all 3 of them r launching qwerty phones by christmas n no one knows whats what.

from what i read the samsung qwerty wll have sickhouse specs but the others may too. they r launching the mytouch 2moro or soon tho b/c its in europe...and they wanna beat the other companies sprint is rumored to be launching Hero in august and hero will have the donut os so we should see a flurry of androids and by fall with donut.

you'd think that HTC would be more fourth coming about what they're planning since they've lost a bit of momentum. from the bits and pieces I've read around the net the next HTC qwerty android is going to be based on the Touch HD, but again they've been keeping quiet on that one particular phone, which would be one hell of a shocker if they revealed that one tommorrow. with the morrison, the bigfoot, and the unknown htc, it seems like its going to pretty interesting in which one will be named what...............

Only reason I honestly havent rooted is I read there r bugs n the bluetooth doesnt work. If those get fixed I might buy an unlocked G1 and root it.

what I'm hoping for is that HTC will roll out that touch HD running andoid and rosie with the nvidia chip and spec'd to the max.

the rosie rom is sweet as hell. the main reason I haven't rooted is just for the reason you mentioned. over all cooked roms work fine, but it's the little gliches that would drive me crazy. now if I could get rosie to work on my phone without any problems I would do it today..............

being a comic book Geek I fuck with ACV.

It's a comic book viewer for the G! and all you have to do is convert your cbr files to cbz and everything is good to go.

same here. But I also read that samsung may have an omnia android in the works....alot of hot phones will have android ported to them by years end early next year.

i am thinking i will buy an unlocked htc in fall if the UI is sick with rosie and donut and the nvidia chip...depends if tmo hooks me up...since i wont be getting a new phone til oct if i go thru tmo.

It depends on which modded rom you go with after you root...
There are rooted versions of the official tmobile rom that have no glitches...
then there are roms from other phones like the Htc Magic, Hero, Saphire that have been ported over to work on the g1...
HTC Rogers and Ion build are the best roms with modifications that will work on the g1 without any glitches.. im using the rogers rom and it has all the features of the saphire/magic phone, everything works including the bluetooth, and the htc camera with zoom works.. havent had any problems with it at all...
if you can root your phone its better cause u can set the phone up to have the cache store to the sdcard on all apps, have apps running from the sdcard, and more...

Hey looking to create my own backgrounds for my G1. Any apps for this? Is there anyway to create these on your desktop and then transfer them to the phone. Any help appreciated, thanks!

check your wifi connections settings on the router...
wpa and wpa2 work.. all others wont work when it comes to security if im not mistaken...
bluetooth = are u trying to use headphones or earpiece...
never had a problem with the earpiece before or after root...
if the basic stuff isnt working you may have a defective device.. call tmo for warranty exchange - thats free, just pay for shipping and handling if anything

the rogers rom v3 is the most stable with not a single glitch.. ive tested all the roms over on xda except for all the different hero roms ( only tried 3 of them, and they all have lag - new one just got released the other day, might give it a shot tonight )...
u can unroot the phone if u need to.. but rooting gives you more freedom on your phone, real talk..

ok rumor is now that according to the uk tmo twitter a g1 touch will be announced 2moro that could my th my touch 3g or
huawei-u8230-android-phone.jpg
The Huawei tmo recently picked up as exclusive carrier...and this joint got a front facing camera...this might br able to go against the iphone...
here are the specs

a 3.5inch touchscreen, 3.2 megapixel camera, and a lovely 1500 mAh battery. A detailed look at the photo might suggest that there is also a front-facing camera and your usual Android hardware buttons and trackball.

i might have to give this a spin if it comes out in july b4 going to qwerty model in the fall.

G1 needs a better camera on the phone. The picture quality sucks.
wipe the lense off on the outside of the back cover, adn the inside of the back cover, and also near the battery on the inside of the phone... camera quality isnt the greatest, but its aiight when u do that.. also try snapphoto for better pic quality.. the stock camera app sucks donkey dick on the g1.. but snapphoto takes better pics, and so does the htc camera ( cupcake has the be basic camera app for android ).

I've been checking this phone out but I didn't think It would be available until the end of the year. I would definitely jump on this one if came out early.........

I just rooted my g-1 last night and I am like
:dance::dance::dance:
My stereo blue-tooth works fine, and I overclocked it and threw on a X-box skin, now my joint feels more like a palm-top computer rather than just another smart phone. Its unbelievable how sweet it is now.

hit youtube n type rooting g1

Question after u rooted could u install apps from the market? n what rom did u use? Hero? Rosie or Ion? Or Jesusfreak?

Don't laugh at me , I have had this phone since Jan and don't know shit about all this stuff you guys are talking about. How do I get these apps and are they free? I just surf the net and make calls but would like some of these apps

Yeah you can download apps with no problems (one downside is that I had to reinstall all the apps I had before, but that wasn't such a big deal). The link I posted has several files that are used to get you rooted, and no I didn't use a rom for the process
