Ronaldo keeps finding the net in Brazil

SAO PAULO (AP) -Ronaldo scored his ninth and 10th goals since returning to competitive football two months ago, helping Corinthians reach the quarterfinals of the Brazilian Cup.

Ronaldo scored in Corinthians' 2-0 win over Atletico Paranaense on Wednesday, sending the club through 4-3 on aggregate.

He found the net with a right-footed shot from outside the area in the 55th minute, then converted a penalty in the 68th after being fouled inside the area.

The goals were his third and fourth in the past three matches with Corinthians, which clinched the Sao Paulo state title on Sunday.

Ronaldo returned to football in March after more than a year sidelined due to the third serious injury of his career in 2008.

Barcelona to visit Galaxy, Sounders on U.S. tour

Barcelona has announced plans to embark on its fifth preseason tour of the U.S. and will play three games on the West Coast as part of an agreement with Major League Soccer.

Barça will travel across the pond on July 29 and play its first game against David Beckham and the Los Angeles Galaxy on Aug. 1 at the Rose Bowl, where a huge crowd is expected. Beckham, who is currently on loan to AC Milan, is scheduled to return to the MLS club by then.

A trip to north to Seattle follows as Pep Guardiola's team is due to meet Seattle Sounders FC at Qwest Field on Aug. 5, while plans for a third game are currently in the works.

Barcelona penned a five-year alliance deal with MLS and its marketing arm last year that will see the team play a series of friendlies in America. In 2006, Barça played three times in the U.S. in front of crowds that averaged more than 80,000, while last summer it played twice when around 40,000 went to each game.

The Blaugrana are still keen to promote themselves in the U.S. despite seeing plans to enter a Miami-based MLS team collapse due to the recent credit crunch.

Barcelona is on track to win the Spanish league, and faces Manchester United for the Champions League title May 27.

We don't need to.
Your no threat.
We leave that to lesser teams!!!

What do you mean you don't need to. You win one game and you're going on like you're world beaters. Big deal.

Spurs are no threat. Just shows how shitty your team really are when you can't beat us.

Let me ask you again. When was the last time Chelsea beat Spurs?

Barcelona beat Athletic to lift 25th Copa del Rey

Three goals in a devastating nine-minute spell at the start of the second half saw Barcelona to a 4-1 win over Athletic Bilbao in the Copa del Rey final on Wednesday and the first of three possible titles

barca2750513.jpg

Yaya Toure levelled for Barca in the first half before Lionel Messi, Bojan Krkic and Xavi struck after the break to give the club their 25th Copa del Rey.

The Catalans could wrap up the Primera Liga title this weekend and they face Manchester United in the Champions League final on May 27.

"Now we are reaping the rewards of all the hard work we have put in during the season," Barca midfielder Sergio Busquets told Spanish state television as the team celebrated on the pitch.

"I hope this weekend we can secure our second title."

Barca had an unfamiliar look in defence with reserve keeper Jose Manuel Pinto in goal and Yaya Toure at centre back again, and they were quickly exposed at a set piece.

Pinto had tipped a Javi Martinez shot round the post and Fran Yeste made it count. His whipped-in corner after nine minutes found Gaizka Toquero rising above two defenders to head in at the back post.

Athletic looked fresher, snapping at Barca all over the pitch, until Toure stepped up to level in spectacular fashion as he advanced out of defence.

The Ivory Coast midfielder went past three Bilbao players in the 31st minute, and from outside the area drilled a low shot inside the near post.

Gradually Barca asserted themselves and as they swarmed round the Bilbao area in the 55th minute it was Messi who struck, firing through a crowd of legs after Gorka Iraizoz could only parry Samuel Eto'o's shot.

Three minutes later, Bojan raced through on a break to score off the far post and with Bilbao reeling Xavi curled a superb freekick over the wall and in off the near post in the 64th.

Just before Xavi's goal the match was held up briefly after Barcelona defender Daniel Alves was hit on the head by a tin can thrown from the stands.

Alves was able to continue and television pictures showed police leading a fan away.

Athletic were a broken team after that, but earn a place in next season's Europa League with Barca's place in the Champions League assured for next year.

It would be nice to see Ronaldo in the Copa Libertadores, which Corinthians have never won. Last time they were in the competition the fans rioted after being wrecked by River Plate(I believe Carlos Tevez was on that Corinthian team).

Barca crowned champions

Barcelona won their 19th Primera Liga title without kicking a ball on Saturday when Real Madrid lost 3-2 at Villarreal.

Two-time reigning champions Real Madrid relinquished their Primera Division crown to arch rivals Barcelona tonight after slumping to defeat at Villarreal.

Lying eight points behind pacesetters Barca with three games remaining, Madrid needed to win at El Madrigal to keep the title race alive - at least until Pep Guardiola's men met Real Mallorca tomorrow.

But goals from Robert Pires, Ruben Cani and Joan Capdevila cancelled out efforts from Madrid duo Rafael Van der Vaart and Gonzalo Higuain to give Villarreal a much-needed boost in their hunt for a Champions League spot and hand Barca the title.

Madrid found themselves trailing in the 16th minute. The 32-year-old Ariel Ibagaza created the chance as he made ground down the left before whipping in a cross, and the 35-year-old Pires finished the chance off with a thumping header from near the penalty spot.

With their already faint title hopes slipping further away, that goal seemed to knock the wind out of Madrid and they looked a side devoid of ideas for most of the remainder of the first half as Villarreal dominated proceedings.

Madrid coach Juande Ramos had seen enough and at half-time he replaced the ineffectual Klaas Jan Huntelaar with top scorer Gonzalo Higuain, and the move paid almost immediate dividends.

A deep cross from Miguel Torres picked out Higuain at the far post and the Argentinian's first-time pass across the face of goal allowed Van der Vaart the easiest of tap-ins as the Villarreal defence was nowhere to be seen.

However, the visitors could not build on that and the hosts re-took the lead in the 62nd minute through Cani.

Madrid centre-back Fabio Cannavaro's attempt at cutting out a cross saw the ball fall kindly into the Cani's path and the number 10 lashed a first-time shot past Casillas.

Ramos' men then gave themselves a lifeline when Higuain netted in the 88th minute.

Higuain looked to be standing well offside when he picked up Raul's half-blocked shot, but the flag stayed down and the young striker slotted past Lopez.

There was to be no fairytale finale for Madrid though as two minutes later Capdevila scored the goal that finally ended their title hopes.

Casillas made a mess of trying to catch Nihat's corner, and Capdevila could barely believe his luck as the ball dropped at his feet and all he had to do was poke it over the line.

Sevilla and Deportivo Coruna's European aspirations were dented when they were both held to draws by sides fighting to avoid relegation in the Primera Liga on Saturday.

Third-placed Sevilla were held to a 0-0 draw away to Osasuna with the Andalucians on the back foot for much of the game.

Both sides hit the crossbar and after Sevilla had Ndri Romaric sent off near the end, Osasuna defender Sergio Fernandez soon followed.

Sevilla move five points clear of fourth on to 64 points in their bid to secure the third automatic Champions League qualification place.

Later on Saturday, leaders Barcelona (86 points) could be crowned champions without kicking a ball if Real Madrid (78) fail to beat Villarreal at the Madrigal.

Barca do not visit Real Mallorca until Sunday.

Deportivo remain sixth with 57 points after their striker Ivan Riki scored a late equaliser against his former club Getafe for a 1-1 home draw.

Roberto Soldado had headed the visitors in front just after the restart.

Getafe are 14th with 38 points, one more than Osasuna and four above the relegation zone.

You mad Real Madrid?

Dutch legend Cruyff blasts English foreign policy

Johan Cruyff has hit out at the English Premier League, claiming that the domination of the Champions League is because the clubs rely on foreign players.

cruyff205_adamdavy.jpg

Cruyff: Not a fan of foreign players.. ironically.

The Dutch legend, who played and managed Barcelona, has backed the '6+5 rule' and hinted that the England football team's failure is because of an over-reliance on foreigners.

"However much English teams reach finals or semi-finals, I'm sorry, I do not buy it. And I don't buy it because of the players they have out on the pitch, rather than because of the style they adopt," he wrote in his weekly column in El Periodico.

"The vast majority of them have been brought in from abroad. There are very, very few Englishmen playing in the big English clubs.

"You only have to look at the Chelsea, Arsenal, Liverpool and Manchester United squads to realise that.

"The English national team - missing out on the last European championships - and football in general suffers as a result of them signing so many foreign players.

"Doing this weakens the competition because it is impossible for every player they sign to play."

Cruyff also pointed out that Manchester United's Champions League opponents Barcelona could field up to eight homegrown players in that final, while United's total is likely to be two or three at the most.

"The national teams would be improved, players would be more committed to the clubs where they have grown up and fans would feel more identified with their team,'' he said. ''And, as a consequence, you'd also stop the trafficking of children - thousands of footballing hopefuls taken from poor countries of whom only a tiny proportion make it. The rest? Where are they now, what is their life like?"

Man City deny €150m bid to sign Barca star Messi

messi2750520.jpg

Manchester City have denied making an audacious €150m bid to sign 21-year-old Barcelona and Argentina playmaker Lionel Messi.

Reports in Spain on Wednesday claimed that the Premier League club's bid, which would smash the current world transfer record of €66m set in 2001 when Real Madrid signed Zinedine Zidane from Juventus, included personal terms that would see Messi paid €10m a year.

However, in line with comments from Manchester City chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak who on Tuesday insisted the club would not overreach in the transfer market this summer, City issued a statement denying that an approach for Messi had been made.

''Manchester City Football Club note with interest the reports circulating in the Spanish media that the club has made an offer to the Barcelona player Lionel Messi and that he has turned down the chance to join the club,'' the statement said.

''While acknowledging that Lionel Messi is a world-class player of the highest calibre, Manchester City would like to make it clear that the club has at no time made an approach to Mr Messi or his representatives.''

Earlier this month, City manager Mark Hughes hit out at the number of reports linking the club with players around the world - a consequence of the Abu Dhabi United Group's takeover last summer which installed City as the richest club in the world.

Since City tried and failed to sign Brazilian midfielder Kaka from AC Milan in a £100m deal in January, the club have been cautious not to be linked with outlandish transfer deals and now prefer to take a more conservative approach favoured by Huhges.

However, despite the manager's wish to build a team around a solid core of players rather than one or two marquee names, the Abu Dhabi United Group are keen to dramatically improve the club's standing in the world game and aim to achieve this by signing high profile players.

Along with Kaka and Messi, Manchester City have been linked by some newspapers with big money moves for players such as Carlos Tevez and Fernando Torres.

Let me ask you again. When was the last time Chelsea beat Spurs?

We are not world beaters yet 'cos by definition there can only be one world beater at a time and at this time they are Barcelona.
But we are competing and have been for several years now.
The question you need to ask yourself is?
Are tottenham competing? and if so with whom?

It's of no consequence the last time we beat you or you beat us.
I don't remember the last time we beat Barnsley either....I don't log small games!!!

League position never lies:
Read that and you'll see how you rank against us...
