It is well worth the money. I just finished watching Star Trek on my HDTV using it. HD picture quality is great with this. Low bitrate movies look DVD quality on standard televisions. When I say low bitrate movies I am talking of those 350mb TV shows that are available for download or 700mb movie rips.
It does not come with a HDMI cable. It does come with a component cable. There are other devices that have storage included and record TV but their reviews are not as glowing. WD updates the firmware frequently for this and the number of supported formats is impressive. If you download 1080p Bluray rips, you will have to be sure that the audio is AC3 on the mkv files or you will not have any sound.
For $100 I have not seen a better product. When used with a rapidshare/newsgroup/irc/private tracker account and the usb stick or external harddrive of your choosing it is priceless.

It also plays music files(including wav & flac) and displays photos.

I was going to buy the PS3 to use as a Blu Ray player, the only way, I thought, that I was going to watch 1080p on my tv. This is a much much more logical and cost effective choice for a non-gamer like me. I haven't played video games since the first Playstation came out. So it's definitely worth the money.

I will add there are some older .wmv files it won't play (which happen to be my favorite SLAM created scenes  ) and like everyone else, I've ran into the no sound with .mkv. That usually happens with the huge .mkv files (true Blu-Ray).I downloaded Sin City Blu Ray rip, looked amazing, but no sound. I'm going to try to convert it, but that shit is huge, 12GB+. Other then that, its an excellent player, very smooth menu system, easy navigation, recognizes external drives right away, and it's tiny. It's always going with me on my trips, it's the perfect size.

My DVD player is going to gather dust as it might be officially retired. I used to have to copy movies (AVI only) on a 8GB flash drive and pop it in the USB slot, which was a task. The ability to park my 500GB External with no reformatting (NTFS) and play whatever I want, is just so convenient.

bottom line: GET IT

You can use an optical cable from the WD TV HD or you can use MKV2VOB to convert the 1080p mkv rip.
MKV2VOB
http://www.videohelp.com/tools/mkv2vob

In the mkv2vob configuration menu just select m2ts as the output file, check always transcode dts and check use 448kbps ac3.
It will still have 5.1 surround but wont try to output digitally through the optical port.

If you have a receiver with an optical cable port just hook it up and you should have no issues.

I couldn't justify an additional $150 or more outside of a new external drive and the WDTV for a PS3 either. I won't be purchasing any Bluray discs anytime soon and I am not a gamer.

Throw your wmv files into this

Convert the wmv to avi files and the audio should be restored.

This shit is overrated. If you can afford it spend, the extra $100-$200 and get a netbook. That way compatability ain't an issue.

Good looking out

Let me get to work

If you can afford it, a netbook is a better option. It still basically serves as a media hub that you could plug a harddrive into, and you can hit the net. Less issues with files working. Shit you can get a ntebook for $99-$199 if you look.

What Netbooks come with HDMI and Optical ports, will display 1080p resolution and have good enough processors to play 1080p mkv videos? Which of those costs less than $300?

I have a smartphone, laptop and a workstation if I want to use a computer or surf the internet.

Good points, but from what I'm reading the little black box is having problems playing mkv files which is the main thing I'm interested in

This has played every mkv I have thrown at it so far.

In fact I just put in a My Bloody Valentine mkv. Shit is running smooth as a pair of tits on a 21 year old

Y'all made y'all point but that shit back up to $130 again. I swear I'll get it when it come back down to $30.

In this thread! Niggas keep saying the audio don't play on mkv files.
The audio plays fine in all MKV files. Most 1080p Bluray rips are encoded with AC3 or DTS audio. DTS audio will only output to the digital optical port on the unit. If you do not have a receiver with digital optical ports this can be a problem, so you must reencode the file or read the NFO file the movie comes with to know the type of audio encoding it has prior to download.
If the mkv file has AC3 audio, which most 720p and many 1080p rips do have, then HDMI or component cables will play the audio.

This is not a problem with WD TV units. This is a problem with people attempting to play high quality video files on inferior equipment. Spending extra for a optical cable, spending time to find a different download or spending time to re-encode a video file does not seem unreasonable to me. It may be unreasonable to others.

You set it straight. I'm good now. Thanks!

i watched a few bootlegs on it. but being that they werent ripped from dvds or blu rays, the quality will stay the same. But i rarely download a bootleg. All my blu rays play fine. I have had no issues with sound not being produced. I just got finished watching Sweeney Todd a few minutes ago and it was flawless.

ok...had it a month or so after reading this post..finally hooked it up and getting a grey screen...just bought a 22" hdtv/pc moniter and i'm getting a grey pixelated screen...
