Queen Latifah: Is she really healthy? <hr style="color: rgb(255, 255, 255);" size="1"> <!-- / icon and title --> <!-- message --> You know this topic has been on my mind for a minute now and I wasn't sure how to address it without offending the plus size women out there.

These Queen Latifah commercials are false advertisement. When you are overweight you are not healthy. I am not saying Queen Latifah isn’t a beautiful person... but what type of message are you sending out to people who are overweight?!

Queen Latifah truthfully isn't that big.... what I have issue with is what she is representing, which is it is ok to be overweight. Now two people who are in denial are Aretha Franklyn and Monique.
smh.gif
Are they a size healthy too?

I feel like we should stop sugar coating the shit. I feel like it's so many over weight women who are embracing their excess weight and that’s cool to be confident but that doesn’t mean you should stop trying to get in shape and drop the weight.

Let me say this... I am not no skinny chick. I am not obese... According to white people I am fat... According to Black Men I am thick and/or just the right size. Would I go on T.V. announcing to the world that I am healthy?! NO! AM I conscience of my weight? YES! Whenever a person has excess weight you are at high risk for heart disease, diabetes, and some other things I can't think of right now.

What really prompted me to write this post was the fact that I have done like 10 races during this runners seasons (the last 2 months)... not saying I ran them but I definitely strolled/jogged during the race and crossed over the finish line before the sun set lmaooooo. It was amazing to me how there were so few black people out participating in these races. Out of all the hundreds of people who participate in these races I see maybe 20 black folks out there.

So my topic is for those men who like plus size women.. Are you encouraging your women to stay big? I mean if you love a big woman that’s fine... but is it really in your woman’s best interest to stay at an unhealthy size?!

For the women: well... hmmm I don’t think too many women are gonna admit to being overweight, lolll.

Ok so let me just throw a general question out there... how do you feel about the Queen Latifah commercials?

All that women like Latifah and Monique are saying is that SELF-HATE doesn't have to go hand-in-hand with being overweight. You can still love yourself (and try to stay relatively healthy), while also acknowledging that you're not at the perfect body weight.

I hate when these types of reasonable women are trashed, while all sorts of huge-assed or huge-boobed women, who are equally "overweight," in one area at least, are constantly encouraged and supported. Very mixed message. It's all about where that FAT is (and how sexually attractive you are). Latifah and Monique's type of "fat" (and look) doesn't turn men on, so they're trashed.

I don't think I trashed them. I think these women get more love then hate which is why they continue to stay the size that they do. Latifah's message was not one of self love it was about telling folks she is healthy. Now without looking at her medical charts lollll... she is inadvertently telling folks its ok to be overweight when its not.

Beauty comes in all shapes and sizes but healthy doesnt. Again we are doing these women a disservice by encouraging them to stay big.

Doesn't Latifah do weight wathers? or Jack lalane, or jenny craig?

Isn't she trying to lose weight? I'm confused.

Monique ... :smh::smh: I think she's reason why obesity is on the rise in blk women.

I don't even think that Monique is in dire need of a weight intervention. Everyone can be more fit and healthy but if you are the type of person that with diet and exercise you still aren't a size four, embrace it. I think she is one of those types of people; Latifah too.

Aretha- :smh:
THAT is a crying shame. SHE needs to take some of that Queen of Soul royalties and hire a dietitian and a personal trainer instead of having these ugly elaborate gowns being made to accommodate her size. Hell, Chaka can join her.

But for the record I will admit, (and my man), that I need to exercise and loose a little. I'm not Latifah's size but I'm not the skinny bitch in the mall either. But fuck what he say I, (and I put emphasis on that), don't like my size. It was manageable but after my daughter I want to pre-baby weight. Don't know how much I want to/will loose just want to get in a size 14. And find some clothes that fit.

Maybe that's it. I have clothes my size but I believe- nay, I know- that they do not fit my body type like they should. Unlike Aretha I don't have the money to make my clothes custom fit me. If we as a society stop accommodating for these unhealthy sizes then maybe enough of us would get off our asses to do something about it. She's complacent. You should never be complacent. Because looking for a "size healthy" is what happens.

Latifah and Monique have barrel bodies
Latifah used to have the right proportioned body but that breast reduction killed it
Mo never had a body
Those commercials with Latifah are lame as hell

Hey Mz Kitty. You can be big and still be healthy. You can not be morbidly obese and still be healthy. BMI of 29 or less, and a waistline around 35 or less for women is decent. 40 or less for men. Anything else has lots of risks associated with it. That being said, at least Queen is advocating for a healthier lifestyle. Monique does not.

Make sure you addthe heigt/age REQUIREMENTS to those when you post them.

A 49 inch waist on a 5'4 20 year old male is NOT within good BMI. That would actually put this guy around 38-40% body fat.

As for the topic, I ain't in it. I am attracted to all types of women.

I hear what your saying, Queen Latifah claims she's "a size healthy." It's a catch phrase, which means absolutely nothing. There's no such thing as a size healthy.

However just because someone is heavy or overweight doesn't mean they are any less healthy than the skinny person on your job that eats anything they want and eats all day long. Don't be fooled there's some average size people in this world with just as many health problems as overweight people.

Aretha Franklin is not and hasn't been healthy since the late 1960s. She is however working at getting smaller since her weight started to affect her ability to sing. Monique is fat and will be fat, she can afford to treat herself anytime she wants. I'm sure she wants to be smaller but she's not going to make the necessary changes in her life to become smaller.

In answer to your question, Queen Latifah (if she's working out) maybe healthier than she's been in her life. But I would still say no she's not.

GOOD ANSWER! :yes:

You'd be surprised the skinny-minnies running around who AREN'T healthy and the woman with additional weight (say, 10-20 lbs. overweight) that have more health/fitness. I see this all the time exhibited in my fitness class. Some of the larger women can run LAPS around the skinny chicks who lead sedentary lifestyles...

Man, I'm gonna go right against the grain here and say if you're Monique's size yo ass is fat. If you're Queen Latifah's size, you might want to want to get in the gym AND start eating right.

It's a crazy world when people really feel like being fat is ok and people are starting to actually look down on people who are a healthy weight.

Let me say this... I am not no skinny chick. I am not obese... According to white people I am fat... According to Black Men I am thick and/or just the right size.

I always thought this was the dumbest shit. "Well, according to the "WHITE people, my blood sugar is high...according to BLACK people, I got good blood sugar." :smh: You still have diabetes.

Man... I was reading some of these and yall talk as if you know her! She is working out and her blood presser is under control with out meds and that is not all. But you all are going to say what you say anyway. This is only the internet.

Obesity
Definition

Obesity is a term used to describe body weight that is much greater than what is considered healthy. If you are obese, you have a much higher amount of body fat than lean muscle mass.

Adults with a BMI greater than 30 are considered obese.

Anyone more than 100 pounds overweight or with a BMI greater than 40 is considered morbidly obese.

Alternative Names

Morbid obesity; Fat - obese
Causes

Rates of obesity are climbing. The percentage of children who are overweight has doubled in the last 20 years. The percentage of adolescents who are obese has tripled in the last 20 years.

Consuming more calories than you burn leads to being overweight and, eventually, obesity. The body stores unused calories as fat. Obesity can be the result of:

* Eating more food than the body can use
* Drinking too much alcohol
* Not getting enough exercise

Certain thyroid problems may also lead to signficant weight gain. Genetic factors play some part in the development of obesity -- children of obese parents are 10 times more likely to be obese than children with parents of normal weight.

Obesity is a significant health threat. The extra weight puts unusual stress on all parts of the body . It raises your risk of diabetes , stroke , heart disease , kidney disease, and gallbladder disease. Conditions such as high blood pressure and high cholesterol, which were once thought to mainly affect adults, are often seen in children who are obese. Obesity may also increase the risk for some types of cancer . Persons who are obese are more likely to develop osteoarthritis and sleep apnea.
Exams and Tests

The health care provider will perform a physical exam and ask questions about your medical history, eating habits, and exercise routine.

Skin fold measurements may be taken to check your body composition .

Blood tests may be done to look for thyroid or endocrine problems, which could lead to weight gain.
Treatment

A combination of calorie restriction and exercise (when adhered to) appears to be more effective rather than either one alone. Sticking to a weight reduction program is difficult and requires a lot of support from family and friends.

Even modest weight loss can improve your health. It is important to work with your health care provider or dietician to develop a plan that is best for you. For most people, weight can be lost by eating a healthier diet, exercising more, and adopting new behaviors such as keeping a food diary, avoiding food triggers, and thinking positively.

There are many over-the-counter diet products. Most do not work and some can be dangerous. Before using one, talk to your health care provider.

Prescription weight loss drugs are available. Such medicines include subutramine (Meridia) and orlistat (Xenical). Ask your health care provider if these are right for you.

Surgery may be an option for persons who are morbidly obese and who cannot lose weight using other methods. Weight loss surgery, such as placing adjustable bands around the stomach and gastric bypass surgery , can significantly improve weight and health in the right candidate . Talk to your doctor to learn if this is a good option for you.

Support Groups

Many people find it easier to follow a diet and exercise program if they join a group of people with similar problems.

See: Eating disorders - support group

Possible Complications

Medical problems commonly resulting from untreated obesity and morbid obesity include:

* Diabetes
* Hypertension
* Heart disease
* Stroke
* Certain cancers , including breast and colon
* Depression
* Osteoarthritis

Obesity can lead to a gradual decrease in the level of oxygen in your blood, a condition called hypoxemia . Persons who are obese may temporarily stop breathing while asleep ( sleep apnea ). Decreased blood oxygen levels and sleep apnea may cause a person to feel sleepy during the day. The conditions may also lead to high blood pressure and pulmonary hypertension . In extreme cases, especially when left untreated, this can lead to right-sided heart failure and ultimately death.
When to Contact a Medical Professional

Schedule an appointment with your health care provider if you or your child are obese or gaining weight at an extremely rapid rate. Remember that catching the problem early is much simpler than trying to fix it after the person has gained an excessive amount of weight.
Prevention

A healthy diet and regular exercise can help prevent weight gain. Increase your daily activity. Take the stairs rather than the elevator, or walk instead of driving (when possible).

:rolleyes::smh: What white people think that?? Make sure you're not confusing White HOLLYWOOD for White people. White HOLLYWOOD has the belief that the average women is a size 6, not a 12 or 14. Why even make that connection if you know it to be unreasonable??? And basically, by your own admission, Black men tend to be more accepting of heavier women. How does that affect your healthiness? That's like saying "Oh, I got 1000 on my SAT and didn't get into Harvard, BUT YOU KNOW HOW THOSE WHITE SCHOOLS ARE. I'm going to Alcorn State, which is an HBU." Don't take it personal. And I went to the doctor on Monday, it was 89. You want my blood pressure???

I'm sorry what are you bitching at me again about? I lost track of what this argument is about... oh, you defending people being overweight?! oh ok... well thats cool no ones knocking you for your beliefs.

It also would've helped to link to the commercials (which I haven't seen) because a lot of people don't watch television all too often.

If that's what you got out of my two posts then.....:dunno:. CLEARLY, I was commenting on Black people (well women because I've never heard a man say that) who say "Well, according to white people I'm fat, but not according to Black people." I think that is dumb, that's what I was saying. That's cool, nobody is bitching at you, I'm not gonna knock you for beliefs.

Re-read what I said. I said "always thought" which means that it was a thought waaaaay before you wrote and waaaaay before I met you, did you originate that? It wasn't an attack on YOU, it was a comment against that line of thinking which has been heard far too often as a scapegoat for being an overweight woman. No one is judging you, I find, and always have, that rationale :smh:. But I'm not gonna knock you for your beliefs.

35 inches or less for women
40 inches or less for men
BMI less than 29 for everyone
