EA Confirms Dead Space Survival Horror Game

EA Confirms Dead Space Survival Horror Game Officials from Electronic Arts have confirmed the existence of a new intellectual property for the company, in the form of forthcoming console-only game Dead Space. The game is being developed by the company’s EA Redwood Shores Studio, and is described as a “third-person sci-fi survival horror experience”.

In the game, players will take on the role of Isaac Clarke, an engineer on an otherwise routine mission to fix a communications system on a mining ship who "awakes to a living nightmare when he learns that the ship’s crew has been ravaged by a vicious alien infestation." Clarke must then "fight through the dead silence and darkness of deep space to stay alive."

No screenshots of the game have yet been released, but the official website shows artwork implying a look and feel similar to movies such as the Aliens tetralogy, with consumer magazine Game Informer comparing the game’s atmosphere to Paul W. S. Anderson’s 1997 movie Event Horizon.

Executive producer Glen Schofield (From Russia With Love, The Godfather) commented, “This team has worked on some tremendous properties but we have always wanted to work on something that was darker and creepier. We are all such huge fans of the horror and sci-fi genres; we wanted to create the most terrifying game we could, and keep the player on the edge of his seat the entire time.”

Under development at EA's Redwood Shores studio, Dead Space is expected to be released in autumn 2008 for both the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.

G4TV has got a secret ... shhh!

Apparently, G4TV has a big announcement they plan to reveal this Thursday night during Attack of the Show. No word yet on what it could be, but the rumor is that G4 will be going to HD format for all their shows.

Does Cops come in HD? Oh, never mind. Some shows on the network have already switched to widescreen format, and HD could be a possibly, but I'm keeping my fingers crossed for an all tech channel again. Canada's G4 is still all tech, and it's much better that way.

Stay tuned to G4TV this Thursday at 7:20pm EST to watch for this big announcement ... the biggest announcement G4 has ever released!

G4TV Delay 'HUGE' announcement due to legal problems

G4TV hyped up a while back that they were to make a huge announcement today, however they have posted today that the announcement has been delayed due to some legal issues but stated everything is going to happen and the 'huge announcement' will eventually surface and be worth the surprise. Why was this filed under the Wii section? Well two months ago Reggie promised a big Wii surprise was coming towards the end of September and we are speculating that the 'huge' news might be in relation to this.

quote:

Um…. sorry. We know we’ve been hyping a big surprise all week and there’s been a ton of speculation as to what it could be. Some thought we’d start broadcasting in 720p, while others believed it had something to do with the launch of Halo 3. Good guesses, but neither of them is correct and though we can’t tell you what the answer is, we can assure you that the announcement will be huge!

Ultimately, the delay is the result of a legal thing that we honestly thought would be worked out by now. You know how it is, the lawyers in the fancy suits with the big briefcases have to cross every "T" and dot every "I" before anybody can do anything.

Don’t worry everything’s still happening, just not today. Be patient. The surprise will be worth the wait and we’re sure it will make a lot of you very happy. Again, we’re sorry.

Playpen Studios announces 'Nightclub DJ' game, Skillz

17834-550x-Skillz2.jpg

I've been known to enjoy the nightlife, and I sure do love me some peripherals. So I raise one eyebrow in the direction of Skillz, the Playpen Studios developed "original Nightclub DJ game."

The title is said to use a unique turntable controller to mix and scratch, in this music rhythm game set to hit PC and "multiple console platforms" in 2008. The game will feature a full single-player story, two-player battles, and a freestyle mix mode. The game will also feature an online community where you can share your funky, fresh, dope, or "whatever the kids are calling it these days" tracks with the world.

No word on whether or not Skillz will use licensed music, or if we'll be mixing "Chopsticks" with other public domain favorites. We're also not sure what "multiple console platforms" means, but given the fact that a pack of blindfolded monkeys can port PC titles to the Xbox 360, Microsoft's console sounds like a sure bet.

Analyst: Sony need to lower the price to stay in the game

Kaufman Bros. analyst Todd Mitchell thinks that Sony faces “a worse case scenario” for the holidays because the PS3 is “too expensive and lacks compelling content.” He goes on to say that Sony will have to lower the price of the PS3 “to stay in the game.” He has revaluated his estimate on Sony Playstation 3 units to 10.3 million from 13.5 million. He also indicates that microsoft will recieve a "boost" due to the success of Halo 3 but only increasing his estimate from from 16.5 million to 17.1 million. He also increased his estimate on Wii sales to 19.8 million, from 16.3 million.

As you wish, Princess Bride game in development

One of our favorite films is getting the video game treatment ... just 20 short years after its initial release. The Hollywood Reporter is, well, reporting that Worldwide Biggies (we haven't heard of them either) has entered into an exclusive deal to produce a game based on Rob Reiner's The Princess Bride.

Now, before you start imagining stabbing the Six-Fingered Man with your Wiimote, you should know this sounds like a distinctly casual product. A sample will be included with a 20th anniversary DVD of the film this year, followed up by the release of True Love and High Adventure -- The Official Princess Bride Game in the spring. If this tells you anything, the game is currently not planned as a retail release, but rather as a downloadable title. Inconceivable!

Report: Princess Bride game conceivable
Cherished family adventure film set to see a downloadable interactive adaptation next spring.
By Brendan Sinclair, GameSpot
Posted Oct 3, 2007 10:52 am PT

Between E.T.: The Extra Terrestrial on the Atari 2600, Taxi Driver, and Street Fighter: The Movie, film-to-game adaptations don't always have fairy tale endings. However, The Hollywood Reporter has news of one adaptation for which a fairy tale ending should be entirely expected.

Whoever designed that reversible logo is a mad genius.

According to the film industry trade mag, Worldwide Biggies is making a game based on Rob Reiner's much-beloved 1987 adventure film, The Princess Bride. Details on gameplay are nonexistent, but Worldwide Biggies CEO Albie Hecht told the trade group the game would appeal to the casual audience and would be download-only upon its release. The production company is not entirely unfamiliar with the world of games, as it runs a fantasy celebrity newsmakers league and produced Spike TV's Video Game Awards.

True Love and High Adventure--The Official Princess Bride Game is set for release next spring, with a teaser trailer for it appearing on the 20th anniversary DVD for The Princess Bride, set for release November 13.

48 scheduled game-movie releases bad news?

A gaming site is asking the question of whether hollywood is about to ruin your favorite video game. There are an incredible 48 game based movies currently in development. We've come not to expect too much from video-game movies but surely there could be a diamond in the rough from the 48 upcoming titles?

The problem also lies with gamers. Every time Hollywood releases another game based movie, gamers flock to the theaters to pay $10 for another piece of theatrical garbage (stop salivating over Hitman already guys). If movie studios keep making money from terrible movies because of an installed fan base, then they are going to keep making bad movies.

Crysis CEO Poops on Console Shooters
Oct 04, 2007 at 6:16 PM - Robert "Apache" Howarth - 24 Comments
Ah, a man after my own heart. Crytek CEO Cevat Yerli was interviewed at Game Informer about a number of topics, including but not limited to: Crysis, DX10, why DX10.1 doesn't matter, his thoughts on UbiSoft making Far Cry 2 and his feelings about Halo 3 and console shooters in general.

GI: So you’re not excited for Halo 3?

Yerli: No. [But] I don’t want to talk bad about it. The trailer looked great. I know there are millions of people who love it. I tried to play Halo 1; I tried to play Halo 2. (laughs) I really didn’t get it & it didn’t get me. [...] It’s not that it isn't possible [to make a good shooter on a console], but console shooters are at the level of PC shooters 5-6 years ago. The gameplay has to be more sophisticated – more thinking [than] shooting.

^^Answer slightly edited since English isn't Cevat's primary language^^

Crysis Could Spread to Consoles

Console gamers’ hopes of playing Crysis on PS3 or Xbox 360 may rest on the success of the PC version of the title, says Crytek boss Cevat Yerli.

While Yerli told Game Informer “there is no development on consoles” for the time being, he did say that if the game was well received on PC it would boost the possibility of the shooter appearing in console form.

“What happens next we haven’t decided yet, because first we want to see how the game is received, publicly and critically… We believe it will be received at least as strong as Far Cry. I hope personally a 5% average increase… That would give us an argument to [say], ‘OK, let’s see how we can bring Crysis to consoles’. The engine right now is running on consoles so there’s no reason why we couldn’t.”

While Yerli noted that console shooters were still half a decade behind PC shooters, he spoke of ways in which Crysis could successfully be translated to next-gen systems.

“In order to make Crysis’s gameplay [on console] you would have to make a derivative Crysis and optimize it for the Xbox 360 and PS3. In fact, if we do it, we’ll optimize it for each platform… If we would bring it to console we would keep the sophistication. … We would not dumb down the experience.

“The AI and our gameplay dynamic is our heart. We can’t change that. If you change that, you lose Crysis… You have to work it on the UI level, on the level design level, but do not change the heart. If the game is too difficult, make sure the UI can compensate for it. Or if the AI is too difficult make sure the level design offers more leeway and covers for the player. But the core gameplay is intensive, smart and still challenging.”

The highly anticipated FPS will be released for PC on October 16.

Capcom: PS3 Dev Costs Pushed Monster Hunter To Wii

Capcom: PS3 Dev Costs Pushed Monster Hunter To Wii Following the revelation at Nintendo's recent press conference that the Wii will receive the next iteration of Capcom's hit action title Monster Hunter 3, the company's managing corporate officer has been quoted as saying the PS3's high development costs directly influenced the decision.

A report from Thompson Financial News quotes Capcom's Katsuhiko Ichii as saying, "Due to high development cost of titles for PS3, we have decided to switch the platform to which we release our Monster Hunter 3 title."

The game's release for the Wii was the final announcement at Nintendo's recent conference that also saw a number of new first party and WiiWare titles announced.

Although previously announced for the PlayStation 3, no media of the game has previously been shown, and its multiformat status is unclear.

Monster Hunter is one of the most popular franchises currently in Japan, with both PSP iterations having sold over a million units each, although the series has never enjoyed the same success in the West.

Obvious: Unreal Engine 4.0 in development

48440-UNREAL4NOT.jpg

During yesterday's tour of Epic Games' beautiful Cary, North Carolina offices, producer Jeff Morris showed us a few things. Epic's gorgeous mo-cap room; Epic's outdoor basketball court; Epic's break room; Epic's bathrooms. Morris also gave us a tour of the very sparse office of one Tim Sweeney, Epic's brilliant computer programmer.

As pointed out by Voodoo Extreme, a giant sketch pad on Sweeney's desk contained scribbles of numbers and letters, none of which made sense to my puny human brain. Morris confirmed that this was likely the beginning of Sweeney's work on Unreal Engine 4, and that this is the kind of stuff he does all of the time. He then joked that if a wormhole were to open up anywhere in Epic's offices, this would be the place.

Here's the thing about programmers and game engines: When one engine is done, they start work on another! Welcome to the wonderful world of game design, folks. Interesting, yes. But Earth shattering news it's not.

Look for my short tour of Epic's offices later (which is also not Earth shattering news, but interesting!), as well as my hands-on with Unreal Tournament 3's multiplayer modes.

BioShock, Halo 3 not "next-gen"

Frontier Developments boss David Braben believes BioShock and Halo 3 are not examples of "next-gen" games.

He was speaking exclusively to Eurogamer about his new project The Outsider, which he still believes will be one of the first proper examples of fifth generation gaming on the market.

"I loved the 1930s-1950s atmosphere of BioShock: the lovely Art Deco visuals and the audio that worked especially well," Braben told us. "Overall the whole game was beautifully executed, but the gameplay itself was not 'next-gen'."

"I found Halo 3 great fun, too, but also a little disappointing - as although there were a few nice touches and improved graphical fidelity, it hadn't really moved on much from Halo 2 in terms of the gameplay.

"So to answer your question, if anything I am reassured; I think Outsider more than stands up to them, and I still think Outsider will be one of the first 'next-gen' games," he added.

The Outsider was announced back in 2005 as a game that would bring around the same sort of freedom as Braben's other famous creation, Elite. For him, a next-gen game means giving you the tools to change the outcome of a story much more dynamically than by choosing good or evil paths - something only the new consoles have the grunt to deliver.

The Outsider is a high-tech thriller that pops you in the shoes of an Elite CIA agent made public enemy number one at the outset of the game. From here your choice of how to proceed is up to you: turn the tables and exploit your former employers, bring about ultra-violent destruction with your Jack Bauer-like training, or crusade to clear your wrongly slurred name.

Development on the title is going "very well, thanks", although no platforms, dates, or details have been heard about for the past two years.

Frontier Developments is also currently working on roller-coaster sequel Thrillville: Off the Rails, which will launch on PC, 360, Wii, DS, PS2 and PSP on 19th October.

Join us later in the week for our full chit chat with David Braben to find out how he has found working on the PS3 and 360, and what exactly the Wiimote is capable of.

I WANT GRAN TURISMO 5 GOTDAMMIT

Gran Turismo creator: Forza is way ahead of us in terms of feature sets

The creator of the Gran Turismo series Kaz Yamauchi has commented that in terms of feature sets Forza is way ahead of the Gran Turismo series. However, they take their approach differently as his team tries to focus on the core values for a racing game and try to raise the standards as high as possible. He had trouble explaining the differences between the two racers but stated one way of looking at is that you can buy a super functional watch (Forza) or one which is reduced in functions but more premium and high end.

Kikizo: Could you give us your opinion on Forza MotorSport 2 for the Xbox 360, and in particular, the ability to reskin your car in very great detail - are you going to have this degree of superficial car customisation in GT5?

Yamauchi: Straight off the bat, I think that in terms of feature sets, Forza is ahead of us. They have more options, you can do basically anything. We take a different approach obviously - we try to concentrate on what are the core values for a racing game, and we try to elevate those standards up as high as we possibly can. I am having difficulty trying to explain the differences, but one way you can look at it is, you can buy a watch that is super multifunctional, but economical, or a watch that is reduced in functions, but premium - higher end.

Yahoo! Kills Release of CoD 4 Demo
[Uros "2Lions" Jojic] 12:31 pm EDT @ October 11th, 2007
We just got word from our reader DrJester that Yahoo's servers have crumbled under the pressure of trying to host a premiere of the Call of Duty 4 single-player demo. I've tried pulling the file to host it locally, but their server's reporting a 404 - no such file found.

"The demo was able to be downloaded about an hour or so ago, but, apparently, Yahoo decided they didn't like their servers getting hammered and pulled the link altogether. Those who were downloading were not able to get more than 30MB before the transfer failed."

Stay tuned, though. We'll try to get the demo mirrored as soon as we can.

Infinity Ward: There was no base console for dev, COD 4 on PS3 excels over Xbox 360

According to a gaming website, Infinity Ward relayed to them that there was not one console platform being used as a base in the development of COD 4, instead all development occurred simultaneously across all three platforms. However, the PS3 version reportedly triumps over the Xbox 360 version when it comes to textures, lighting and sresolutions.

quote:

Still, as strong as Call of Duty 4 is shaping up to be in the gameplay department, the most immediately impressive aspect is by far its graphics. The PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 versions all look surprisingly similar, but that's not due to one platform being the lead; Infinity Ward personally assured us that development occurred simultaneously on all three platforms, and that there wasn't a base system. With that said, the console similarities end when it comes to textures, lighting and resolutions, because those three areas make the PlayStation 3 version definitely excel over the Xbox 360 SKU. Regardless, every console owner will proudly use Call of Duty 4 to showcase their high-definition TV, because COD4 is by far the best-looking console game you will see this year.

Forza is bullshit. So what you can put graphics on the cars. You can't tune the suspensions, weight distribution, ride height, camber, gear ratio, let alone tune the motors. The cars drive like their real-life counterparts. GT is the closest you'll ever get to real road racing.

I had to reread this a couple of times. I'm not sure if you're saying you can't tune all of that shit in Forza or not. But if that is what you're saying it's not true. You can pretty much tune every aspect of your car in Forza 2 including everything you just named.

The physics and handling are regarded as some the best for a console racing game also. The only bad part about the game really is the fucking aliasing on the car models. Forza gives GT a hard run at the crown for best racer believe me.
