Thanks to a helpful tipster, we have a couple of Best Buy documents showing a $399 Playstation 3 with 40GB disk and Spiderman 3 (yes, Blu-ray) bundle with an "In Stock Date" of October 28. However, the more important "Street Date" field is unfortunately empty at the moment. While the docs look legit and don't seem to be Photoshopped, they can still be faked easily enough. So we did a quick lookup on the UPC code and sure enough, while the details are masked, the manufacturer is listed as "Sony Computer Entertainment of America." Unfortunately, we don't see the new model CECHG01 listed anywhere in the docs. As such, let's be clear: this ain't official. Still, we'll be paying close attention on October 12th as will you we suspect.

One hour later: 40GB PS3 rumor returns, announced tomorrow?

Ok, this is now getting sad. With Sony just denying the "Big Bang" announcement, the on again, off again, 40GB PS3 rumor is back on. Big time, according to an "exclusive" over at Pocket-lint. According to their "multiple sources," Sony will announce the 40GB "core" PS3 tomorrow at a price of £299 -- the same model we expect to hit the US for $399. Also expected is a £56 price reduction on the UK's 60GB PS3 making it £369 in time for the holidays -- those Sony "value pack" bundles will see the axe. The 40GB PS3 is expected to feature WiFi, Blu-ray, and SIXAXIS controller but will lose 2x USB slots, the memory card reader, and backward compatibility chip -- not a loss for European gamers whose compatibility is ensured via software. All the changes are expected this month if the rumor holds up. Tomorrow, it's only a day away.

Update: A report from France's Les Echos seems to back Pocket-lint's claim: a €399 40GB PS3 in time for Christmas. A Sony spokesman would not confirm details but did say that an announcement was "imminent."

PS3 price-cut coming October 12th?

Well folks, it looks like the funky, PS3 price-drop happenings you've been hearing about lately may very well be dropping all over the place. Apparently, hot on the heels of a new filing with the FCC, and various rumors concerning an approaching $399 console, Sony (which has heretofore denied the chatter) has announced a "Big Bang" press conference to take place on October 12th, where many believe they will intro a new, lower priced 40GB console. With nothing big slated for the holiday season yet, and Xbox 360 price-cuts and bundles being bandied about, it makes sense that Sony would come out swinging before holiday shoppers hit the stores. It's truly a good time to be a buyer.

Italy to get 40GB PS3 on Oct 10, Gamestore mag reports

http://www.joystiq.com/2007/10/03/italy-to-get-40gb-ps3-on-oct-10-gamestore-mag-reports/

While expectations continue to build regarding Sony's probable, yet still unconfirmed 40GB PlayStation 3, Italy's Gamestore magazine has stoked the fires of speculation by reporting that Italian gamers will be able to purchase the 40GB model on October 10 for the lower (in relation to PS3's current European retail value) and more consumer-friendly price of €399 ($564).

Additionally, the report also makes mention of a €499 ($705) 'starter pack' SKU, which according to the mag will include two unspecified games and an extra controller. This latest news comes on the back of a string of rumors that simply refuses to die. If accurate, how much longer can Sony pretend to keep a lid on this?

Come on now jagi, you know you're salivating to get this. Since you hate your XBOX 360 so much.

I am not even looking to pick up a PS3. At any price.

Ha-Ha. I am happy PS3 & Sony overestimated their hype. They are forced to eat some humble pie. I MIGHT get one at $400. But right now I'm struggling. This is what sony gets.

Re: !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! $400 PS3 - somewhat confirmed - will you now buy one!!!!!!!!!!!!

after YEARS of debating about putting more money in Bill Gates already fat ass pockets I just bought a fuckin XBOX Elite and pre-ordered Call of Duty 4 so HELL NAW I ain't buyin that shit!

I could give a fuck about a bluray, I wanna play games dammit!

Re: !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! $400 PS3 - somewhat confirmed - will you now buy one!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sony is fooling themselves if they think that people are not buying the system because of the price, it because at this point they dont have a strong portfolio of games. They could lower the price even more and it still wont sell until there are a decent amount of good games.

Re: !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! $400 PS3 - somewhat confirmed - will you now buy one!!!!!!!!!!!!

Just got a ps2 for $80.00. When the PS3 hit $150.00, I'll consider seein as they might have some games for that mufucka by then.

Re: !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! $400 PS3 - somewhat confirmed - will you now buy one!!!!!!!!!!!!

I still don't wnt to drop any money on a new gaming system, especially one without any games that I want.

But a 400 dollar blueray player is a nice thought but still not cheap enough. If it hits 299 or 250 then probably.

Re: !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! $400 PS3 - somewhat confirmed - will you now buy one!!!!!!!!!!!!

i thought the 80gb was suppose to be 400
when they drop that price then ill bye

Thats a good idea, i think both companies should bump up to at least 200+ GB drives, cause well, the cost isnt that much more than buying a 120 GB drive.

At least with a PS3 ur getting a Legit HD video player for $400.

But that just means M$ will have to undercut them to make up for that, lol so I win either way, and the looser are..........the 1st gen buyers, lol

Re: !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! $400 PS3 - somewhat confirmed - will you now buy one!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yes...NOW it will be worth it. A $400 game machine and Blu-Ray player, it makes sense fiscally now.

Re: !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! $400 PS3 - somewhat confirmed - will you now buy one!!!!!!!!!!!!

Internal or external? the PS3 uses a 2.5 inch HD and from what I've seen they max out at 320GB.

It doesn't matter if you have the 20GB, 60GB, or even the new 80GB PlayStation 3--you can always use more storage space. All that available hard-disk space quickly disappears once you start downloading games, demos, and HD videos. Fortunately, Sony has designed the PS3 to allow console owners to perform their own hard-drive upgrades. You can go out and select your own hard drive instead of being forced to buy an official first-party hard-disk accessory. However, giving console owners that freedom means that aspiring upgraders will need to know how to select the right hard-drive upgrade and the proper installation technique.

The first step to replacing the hard disk is going to the store or visiting an online retailer to pick up a new hard disk. The PS3 is compatible with just about any 2.5-inch SATA notebook hard disk. Both 5400- and 7200-RPM drives should work fine. The physical size of the hard disk is important because it has to fit the PS3's 2.5-inch drive tray. As far as storage capacity goes, it doesn't make sense to go through the trouble of upgrading unless you go big: We're talkin' 120GB, 160GB, or even 250GB.

Hard-disk manufacturer Seagate supplied us with a 160GB Momentus 5400.3 for our upgrade.

ps3drive_embed001.jpg

Once you have your upgrade drive, the next step is to back up the data on your current PS3 hard drive to an external storage unit. You can skip this step if you aren't attached to your music, videos, and game saves, but most of us will probably want to save all that information. The PS3 has a built-in software backup utility that can copy the PS3's hard-drive contents to an external storage device, such as a USB thumb drive or a memory stick. The removable storage device must use the FAT32 file system in order for the PS3 to recognize it. If you have an external hard drive that's formatted in NTFS, you can use the Disk Management utility in Windows to reformat the drive, but you'll need to create partitions on large external hard drives because Windows can only do FAT32 on drives 32GB or smaller.

ps3drive_embed002.jpg

If your storage device isn't large enough to handle a full system backup, you can selectively copy data over through the various music, photo, and game menus in the XMB. Your PlayStation Network login and system settings will remain safe on the system during the entire process. After you have your data safely backed up, you can move on to the actual hard-drive swap.

You will need a Phillips-head screwdriver to complete this part of the installation process. The PS3 owner's manual also includes step-by-step details on how to replace the hard drive, in case you need more instructions.

At this point you should have a newly upgraded PS3 and the leftover hard drive. You could try selling the old drive, but small-capacity used drives might not fetch enough money to be worth the hassle of finding a buyer. If you still want to make the drive useful, you can buy an external drive enclosure to make it into a portable storage device.
