While expectations continue to build regarding Sony's probable, yet still unconfirmed 40GB PlayStation 3, Italy's Gamestore magazine has stoked the fires of speculation by reporting that Italian gamers will be able to purchase the 40GB model on October 10 for the lower (in relation to PS3's current European retail value) and more consumer-friendly price of €399 ($564).

Additionally, the report also makes mention of a €499 ($705) 'starter pack' SKU, which according to the mag will include two unspecified games and an extra controller. I can dig that. I dig strategy games but turn based games kind of bore me. I tried final fantasy on the ps2 back in 02 it was tight graphics but shit was boring with the repetition shit. That card based games thing always makes me laugh. I played Uno and spades, bid wiss(sp?), poker etc but that whole japanese card thing just bugs me out.

the 360 actaully took something away (the hdd) that was actually needed on one of their skus.

with the PS3 all your losing is a memory card reader, and the backwards compatable thing is probably a misprint as they are removing the Emotion Engine and will use emulation instead.

A Tech blog is asking the question of whether the PS3 price drop puts Sony back into the race. They say that bowing to consumer pressure, dropping the price and creating an entry level system will "allow Sony to get back into the race". They say the wii has sneaked in and appeals to the mass market rather than hardcore gamer, while Sony and MS battle to sell consoles to a niche market. Was the PS3 ever out of the race? CNN has revealed that a Sony spokesperson has commented that an announcement was imminent based on news of a 399 Euro's 40GB PS3 SKU as well as multiple reports of a 100 Euro's price cut on the original PS3 starter pack SKU.

I want to see those specs. after the hard drive discussion i decided to look up the 20gb model if its cheaper, even refurbished, but that one lacks wifi so that would be a waste to me as i would have to buy an adapter anyway, no savings there, minus 2 usb ports i can deal with, the 360 only has two (the third usb slot in the back is taken up by the wifi adapter)

so while i can deal with a less usb ports, less memory cards, i can even do without backward compatibility (i'm sure there will be hdloaders in the future to copy games as well)

i dont want to buy one without a built in wifi, cause the purchase of one puts it at the more expensive price, i could just buy that one for all that..

all in all, its time to just see what sony says and wait for specs and get consumer feedback on what they bought

Sony is fooling themselves if they think that people are not buying the system because of the price, it because at this point they dont have a strong portfolio of games. They could lower the price even more and it still wont sell until there are a decent amount of good games.

Sony has never launched a system with a portfolio of games. The same thing happening with the PS3 has happened with every console they released. The release at a high price, redesign the system and wait for some third party company to rescue them. Nothings changed. Sega had great exclusives, Nintendo had great exclusives, and microsoft had great exclusives. Along comes some killer title and systems fly off the shelves. I put my money on the Wii. Nintendo depends on no one for third party gaming. The make first rate games.

Sony drops 60GB PS3 price to £349, introduces 40GB model

40GB unit to sell for £299 with no PS2 backwards compatibility

Sony has dropped the price of the 60GB PlayStation 3 to GBP 349 and introduced an "entry level" 40GB model to retail at GBP 299.

The repositioned prices will come into effect on October 10, with the new 60GB "value pack" including two first-party games for the GBP 349 asking price, along with a single controller.

It takes the place of the current Sony GBP 425 bundle, which included the console, two first-party games and an extra Sixaxis controller.

At the lower price point is the new 40GB model which only features two USB ports rather than four, and loses the multi-memory card slot and backwards compatibility with the PlayStation 2 back catalogue.

Sony says that it has introduced the two new offerings following "feedback from thousands of existing PS3 owners as well as research into future potential PS3 owners."

"As we approach our first PlayStation Christmas, it is satisfying to be able to offer UK consumers the choice of two PlayStation 3 packages both now representing remarkable value," commented Ray Maguire, MD of SCEUK.

but knowing how sony likes to make their own announcements

they will make their own seperate announcement later

which is stupid

UK PS3 drops price, 40GB finally official
Sony makes two big announcements for its UK customers in a pre-Christmas bid to boost PS3 sales; revised hardware loses PS2 backwards compatibility.

One of the worst kept secrets in the games industry has finally been officially announced. After a flurry of rumours and leaks that a new 40GB SKU of the PlayStation 3 would be coming, Sony has finally confirmed the speculation is in fact, no longer speculation.

The new 40GB version will debut in the UK on October 10, and is "no longer backwards compatible with PlayStation 2 titles," according to Sony. It will also only sport two USB slots instead of four, and will ditch the multi memory card port--although this can be added on with an accessory. The 40GB version will go on sale at a price point of £299 (about $610).

In a statement, Sony said of the lack of backwards compatibility, that it reflected, "both the reduced emphasis placed on this feature amongst later purchasers of PS3, as well as the availability of a more extensive line-up of PS3 specific titles."

That's not all UK Sony fans are getting for the holidays; Sony also announced a price drop on the standard 60GB version, which will continue to be sold alongside the new model. The current Starter Pack, which boasted a 60GB PS3, two first-party games, and two Sixaxis controllers, will be discontinued.

It will be replaced by the new Value Pack, which will feature a backwards compatible 60GB PS3, one Sixaxis wireless controller, and two first party titles, and will cost £349 (about $712)--a £76 (about $155) price drop from the current price of £425 (about $868).

"As we approach our very first PlayStation Christmas, it is satisfying to be able to offer UK consumers the choice of two PlayStation 3 packages both now representing remarkable value," commented Ray Maguire, managing director of Sony Computer Entertainment UK.

How can niggas be to broke to buy a PS3, when most 360 owners are buy more games then any of the other two consoles. These games are going for $60 son. So get that to broke shit out of here.
