Multiple Dead After Driver Crashes Into Crowd at Vancouver Street Festival

Thanks @World B Free and @jawnswoop

My dad's girlfriend lives close to that area, but they were staying home at her place yesterday. It's about 30+ minutes from my place. Gonna check with some Filipino coworkers though, as they may have been in attendance or had friends or family who were.

It's just after 7am here - so woke up a little while ago & saw the threads on Reddit, and set a recording for the morning news to see Global News' coverage (based locally).

Yeah - condolences to the victims' families. People celebrating on a spring weekend day. SMH.

I work in East Vancouver, and our organization has a large Filipino representation.

Yes, condolences to those who lost their lives, I didn't see a thread about this which is why I felt it was only right to make a thread about this.

We gotta keep each other aware of what's going on out there.

Agreed.

What's really upsetting too is knowing how many people are affected (injured or not) with the attacks on festivals, parades, schools, events, etc.

I was there. It happened to fast and we heard a loud banging sound heading towards us then i sww the car rammed the pedestrians, bodies flying, then i was grabbed to the sidewalk. I looked back and saw multiple bodies on the ground.

Very traumatic. It was ssupposed to be meaningful cultural event. I just saw bodies man. It could have been me and my friends

Anesthesiologist there. Mass casualty event has been called and those of us off duty may be coming in for backup. We’ll know more soon.

My brother witnessed the scene unfold. He hasn't returned home yet, but called saying he phoned the police after witnessing people get run over, he said he saw people flying over top the car. I hope he is okay

This happened right in front of my home.

I had just reached home when I heard three big bangs and lots of scream. At first I thought it was a gunshot, and when I looked outside the window, everyone was screaming and running away. I could hear one kids screaming “mommy are we gonna die”. It still is ringing in my ear.

There were so many police and ambulance that came by soon after and the whole experience was jarring. It was when I went out to talked to one of the cops, that I realized it wasn’t a gunshot but someone had drove into the crowd, and apparently he thinks this might have been a hatecrime. I could feel my hands get numb because that was more traumatizing than gunshot for some reason. Someone actually driving into the crowd of people doing nothing but having fun as a community?? What the actual hell!

They soon evacuated the area and told everyone to go inside but I could see from my window the paramedics bringing in injured people to the ambulance. I had such a shock because I was literally just there moments ago, I still feel sick to my stomach. The only different between the person on that stretcher and me might be that I got my food two minutes before and I decided to go home to eat…

It was such a good day today and lapulapu festival where the communities came together. It’s insane to think someone would want to harm people like that.

There is a shared Google Doc circulating with resources for those affected. For easier sharing, I made an easy-to-remember carrd link: FilipinoLinks.carrd.co. Please feel free to use and share widely. The document is not mine, I do not know who created it—the carrd link is just for easier sharing.

My heart goes out to everyone affected in any way. Please know that your pain is valid even if you left the event before this incident took place or if you were physically unharmed. Survivor's guilt and trauma from witnessing or hearing about mass casualty events like this one are very real.

EDIT: there seems to be a new main website, tr.ee/VanFilEmergency. I have added it to the carrd, and I probably won't add much else to the carrd because this website appears to be turning into a main directory for those affected.

Has it been confirmed as being a "terrorist act"..? Or are they jumping the gun like Fox News just did

VANCOUVER — Eleven people have been confirmed dead after a man drove an SUV into a crowd celebrating at a Filipino community street festival Saturday.

The Vancouver Police Department provided an update on the devastating incident Sunday, calling it the “darkest day in our city’s history.”

Interim Chief Const. Steve Rai said it’s possible the death toll will rise further in the coming days.

“It’s impossible to overstate how many lives have been impacted forever,” Rai said, adding that dozens were hospitalized with serious injuries.

Rai said police are still trying to ascertain the motive, but are confident it was not an act of terrorism.

The suspect, a 30-year-old man, has not been charged and his name is not yet being released.

“The driver of the vehicle was the lone occupant, and he was arrested at the crime scene by members of the Vancouver Police Department after bystanders and witnesses intervened to detain him,” Rai said.

“I can tell you that the person we have in custody does have a significant history of interactions with police and health-care professionals related to mental health.”
