Multiple Dead After Driver Crashes Into Crowd at Vancouver Street Festival

The teacher-counsellor mentioned in the 1st link taught about 5 minutes from my mom's old neighborhood ...

Richard Le, 47, his wife Linh Hoang, 30, and their daughter Katie Le, 5, were among those who died at the Lapu-Lapu Day festival, according to Richard's brother Toan Le.

He said the family was notified Richard had died at the scene Sunday morning, while his wife and daughter both passed away shortly after in the hospital.

Toan said Richard had a 16-year-old son, Andy, who had stayed at home that day. Hoang was Andy's stepmom, Toan said, and had raised him like he was her own.

Regarding Filipino staffing ...

Talked to one coworker yesterday in person (early 20s) and she noted she attended the festival and left around 5pm. Enjoyed the food and planned on returning later in the evening for more snacks, but then everything went to hell hours later.

Talked to another coworker (different location - in his early 50s) and he said he got a bunch of texts latenight and on Sunday morning asking if he was good. He didn't attend, but his 20yo niece was asking him if he wanted to attend. Noted he couldn't sleep that night.

One of our clients (early 60s) was doing some shopping in the area about 5 blocks away hours prior to the attack.

* Most sobering though was one of the support workers who does some work with the organization. She noted in a company email reply that her daughter (teens) was in attendance with some friends. They were on that specific block, but fortunately left 10 minutes prior to go to a nearby coffee shop.

Our executive director sent out a letter offering support and listing available resources, and our manager was coming in today to talk w/ staffing and clientele.

The nightly news was saying yesterday that the suspect's brother was murdered in recent years, and mom tried to commit suicide at some point. Suspect himself has had some 50 interactions with police over time, including the day prior in a different district that was NOT violent in nature. Unclear as to what type of mental health support(s) he was actually receiving.

Damn, it's even more alarming and concerning to know that they escaped possible death and injury by 10 minutes. I am glad they are all alright and can be with their loved ones. As for the murderer, it seems that his desire to die was not limited to self-harm/eradication but selfishly extended to innocents. Mental sickness or not, he deserves whatever punishment awaits him. I hope it's painful and merciless.

Agreed. Escaping potential death or grave injury by 10 minutes in going to grab a coffee.

Regarding the murderer ... as my friend in his 50s was saying in seeing the footage of him standing there detained by bystanders / witnesses staying with him ... "They're probably there so he doesn't get seriously hurt by the crowd before police arrives. Also, he looks stunned and in shock."

I replied it's like when you fuck up, but don't realize HOW BADLY you did. In this case, worst case scenario ... multiple dead and injured people.

One of our clients (mentally ill) added - "Makes you wonder what type or state of psychosis or mania led up to this ..." as we both said to each other it certainly sounds like he kept driving when you factor in some 30+ people were hit.

The last sentence is what riles me up. Drove through 30+ innocents celebrating a festive occasion.
He is lucky there were those in the crowd who protected him and did not seek out what some would deem as acceptable mob justice.

Exactly. I was saying to my peers yesterday ... like the other festivals, parades & other events ... people simply minding their own business and celebrating. And one person RUINS it for everyone.

Credit to those bystanders. I'm sure they were seeing red, but able to maintain their composure. Collective thinking probably being - "Let's make sure this fucking asshole doesn't go anywhere. He's staying put. He's going to answer for this shit."

Something isn't adding up. Cause the perpetrator got out of the SUV and bystanders which look mostly like security detained him. The people in the background showing or speaking their displeasure didn't sound to me like relatives of the loved whom he ran over. and killed. That detainment felt too organized and calm given the sheer gravity of what just happened.

If you saw your loved one get killled right before your eyes and the guy who did it is still breathing in one peace, it's gonna take the strength of 10 men to pull you off him. You would be so distraught and overwhelmed with grief all your reasoning, judgment and rationale would go out the window. That pain would be too unbearable when in the moment.

The mental illness is too much of a scapegoat reasoning being used to make sense of it. Yes under the umbrella of mental illnesses there are levels and degrees to it. I don't doubt there is level of mental issue with him. But he kept saying he was sorry over and over again. So it tells me he's cognitive to a high degree of what he did.

Agreed.

Talked to my friend in his early-50s again and some of the questions we were asking ourselves were ...

- How fast was he going?

- How far apart were the victims that were struck?

It would appear that the vehicle didn't slow down much (as you'd think it would) given he struck nearly 30 people and bodies were scattered down the block. People not expecting a vehicle to come blazing through where people were walking & food trucks were parked.
