Jaleel White on feeling left out in the legacy of Black entertainment, saying, “If it’s not a hood story, it’s not a Black story,”

he is partialy right he has been left out because there are at least 15 black shows that are better then family matters.

urkel needs to STFU before he has a metoo moment and those residuals dry up.
Smart guy.....Forgot to add that show on the list.

Hanging with Mr. Cooper better than family matters? i dont really remember anything memorable about that show unless they had guest stars on there and Holly Robinson Peete.

But why we have to do that?

Especially when relatively there are so few black shows period.

These were sit coms which is already subjective and a specific genre

That we watched as children.

We don't have to tear down one to celebrate the other all the time.

We could just say these are our favorites and leave it there.

oh i agree that the show wasnt culturally relevant
but i wouldnt say it was white washed either
the show was based on a geek that was in love with his neighbor
why are we looking for black nationalism from that shit
why can't we just have mindless entertainment like any other group of people?
the cosby show broke down the doors so that we could just have regular entertainment too
I understand him feeling some type of way about not being mentioned in the top of black shows, but it is what it is. but i can say i stopped watching the show on a regular basis after they copied steve and then decided to turn one of them into stefan. It jumped the shark before that but i kept on watching but that was it for me.

Poppa's House will soon be added on that list as well.

Can't forget the wynans bros show and jamie foxx show.

Not trying to tear it down, but it shouldn't be anywhere near the top 15, IN MY OPINION...granted, it's debatable, but i think that there needs to be a certain standard about what we call top black shows...like if you for example are putting homeboys from outer space over family matters...what are we doing here? :smh:

lmaooooooo yeah i said it earlier once urkel started aging they didnt know what to do with the character
that stephon shit was its jumping the shark moment
the show was done after that

from that clip i dont think hes hates black people man
stop the hyperbole
he just wants to be remembered by his own people.
he admits that when it comes to family shows people give him his love
This is how narratives are made for consumption. Folks have more love for Topanga than him, but he has a problem with us. They surrounded you with white people and you want black people to remember you. That’s not how gentrification works.

That’s the thing the show wasn’t based on a geek..he literally was supposed to be a 1 and done character for 1 episode and literally the fans loved his character so much they wanted him back..than he became the show… he literally was an extra that became the main character.. that’s basically never happened b4.. he became a multi millionaire off that.. now why is he mad.. take your money and be happy nig you exceed all expectations and than some

Do you remember the episode when Carl went into the machine because he didn’t want to wear glasses? Do you think we as a people who are about to face unprecedented winds should catalog that to pass on?

Only reason why Jaleel White is jealous of those other black sitcom shows back then is because family matters don't get the same recognition like the rest which were better shows at the time back then.

Also, he went left saying a lot of those shows where hood shows that get talked about the most which is a lie since those shows weren't hood at all.

But this generatiom whill never know about sitcoms we grew up watching back then that were great since there's hardly any black sitcoms to watch that are good today.

Poppa's house is cool and the show with cedric the entertainer and albott elementary but other than that there's no more black sitcoms shows on that are available for free like it was in the past.

man most people today have no idea who topanga was
kids who werent even born in that era know urkel
youre just talking out your ass now

urkel was carrying the show man
i dont know about that
i think that once urkel started aging he simply wasnt that interesting anymore

While I don't disagree the show was better when it was about Harriet and carl and their family, once Steve became a regular the people started watching to see what Steve Urkel was gone do to the Winslow’s this episode. They then later turned into some sci-fi boolshit with Steve’s experiments and I was out completely

Well obviously whoever wrote that should be thrown out if a 10 story window then shot.

Respectfully

When those syndication checks dry up you see the real person. The fat of the facade was used up a long time ago. Where is your next meal coming from Urkel?

Abbott Elementary is one of the best modern sit coms in modern television history

Black white and everything in between

period

Sorry but I guess yall don't remember the late 80's early 90's or the crack era in general....:dunno:

man people are talking about shit they know nothing about
im 45 years old this was my era as a teen

This was one of those "special" episodes that delivered a message. Probably the best episode that addressed racism directly is when Carl laid into that white officer for arresting Eddie because he was black. one of the best episodes on that show IMO..

Narratives are held in place by real memories and sometimes they get so convoluted you can’t discern fact from fiction. And that’s the point of the media to mess with your ability to make memories. You remember Topanga because you’re of that generation. Big tiddy white girl that was used as lotion material for plenty of negroes. Who came before her and who came after her? They are markers in history. They are the punctuation marks of narrative.

topanga wasnt my generation and i never watched that bs show
kelly was...i was a huge saved by the bell fan
neither character by any american demographic had the popularity today or back then as urkel

Strictly speaking, Laura's acting was buttcheeks.

While The Media has changed over the last 30 years, the cultural relevance hasn’t and white folks are still filling negroes minds with white women to drive them crazy.

no, he's not, what is hood about Martin, Fresh Prince and Living Single?
His show isn't as good as those, period.

Who cares about Family Matters reruns?
martin was a hood show because of a his talk show b his interaction with Gina and pam. c martin characters. 2 fresh prince was base on the antics of will smith from hood philly.

except that this is all cap, family matters ratings were better then all these show and was number one on black household in its time slot for years

It seems like the more Jaleel talks the less likable he becomes.

It's generally agreed that many people, including me, loved Family Matters back in the 1990s, but it's also generally agreed that Family Matters has aged poorly. It's quite telling that Jaleel would feel this way when he himself has said that the show had pretty bad writing.

I do want to point out that much of the slander against Family Matters is coming from people too young to remember TGIF or who are viewing the show through modern lenses.

to @jackson35 's point that show was certainly popular.
