he didn't shit on the movie... just said he could have approached the roll better
gAve Alan Rickman props and expressed gratitude because Potter and Batman trilogy allowed him to turn down jobs to spend more time with his kids

"I think my work is mediocre in it," says Oldman. "No, I do. Maybe if I had read the books like Alan, if I had got ahead of the curve, if I had known what's coming, I honestly think I would have played it differently."

“At 42 years old, I woke up divorced and I had custody of these boys and so that, in itself, was…" he said. "That was hard because there was a shift in the industry where a lot of productions were being [filmed in], it was Hungary, Budapest, Prague, Australia, you know, all of these places.”

As a result, Oldman said he “turned down a lot of work” in order to be with his children. “Thank God for Harry Potter,” he told Drew Barrymore. “I tell you, the two — Batman and Harry Potter — really they saved me, because it meant that I could do the least amount of work for the most amount of money and then be home with the kids.”

I would really like to hear your thoughts.

About the movie AND how it was received

Overall it was good. Felt long at 2 hours, 40 mins though and took itself too seriously at times.

Not as good as the previous movie in the franchise.

There are some great visuals in the final 20 - 30 mins though. Would have looked stunning on the big screen or IMAX. We watched it on a 55”.

Enjoyed Esai Morales in the movie. Good to see him in Ozark and Master Gardener in recent years too. Been a fan of dude since his role as “Bob” in La Bamba approx’ 35 years ago. One of my fave VHS classics!

Regarding box office ... they were in a tough spot. They released it a week or two before Barbie & Oppenheimer, right? That cut into their own box office return(s) by at least a few hundred million. I’m sure looking back they probably wish they could have done a spring release instead. And of course covid production delays messing with them in 2020 and 2021 with the intl shooting locations more challenging than the Barbenheimer ones respectively.

Perfect review as always.

I like to bring up Mission Impossible because I felt their was an unfair organized attack on other properties that failed around the same time that didn't get the grace Cruise got. Big budget franchise flicks like Indiana Jones, Fast Furious etc. also "flopped" at that time and could EASILY have used the same excuses. But no one allowed that.

Thanks.

This past spring and summer was something else re: box office. Kind of hard for anything to compete with Barbie or Oppenheimer. They were HUGE and dominant for months. Like you said - the other stuff just got lost in the shuffle unfortunately.

I watched Indiana Jones with my pops in October during his knee surgery recovery. We liked it - it was a popcorn flick, just as we had hoped. Some great chase scenes included!

Watching Mission Impossible yesterday with my aunt. It held our interest and best of all we could talk out loud while watching, unlike a theater, lol. I was making up some pizzas and nachos, and grabbing the tea, coffee, and chocolates.

@playahaitian

Funnily enough and by contrast, look at how well played Cruise and company were in mid-2022. They sat on Top Gun for a year or two for a proper theatrical release and crushed the numbers.

Hell ... the Mish Impossible Part 1 trailer was already running 1 year ahead of time then, haha.

So a home run with Top Gun, and a hit to 2nd base with M.I. ...

Oh you KNOW Tom mad as hell.

But to me he should take that as a huge win OVERALL

he fought the studio AND the pandemic and won.

Bu I also understand a little bit of worry because so MANY franchises have been falling off recently.

Agreed.

I wonder if it took a bunch of wind out of their sails considering they are working on the next movie now.

At least they know they will NOT be contending with round 2 of Barbenheimer, lol. They probably still have nightmares from that 1-2 KO punch during summer of 2023.

Oh ... we started laughing at the Cruise running moments yesterday. I told auntie about the running compilation clips on Youtube. Signature Cruise for decades!

I saw it in the theater and I swear the whole audience just started clapping every time he did the trademark run!

That man is cursed.

He CANNOT stop doing it now!

The Iron Claw

Zach Efron's face and Lip's lack of size sort of took me out of the movie

and I guess they didn't want to make it too depressing, because they left out a brother. They combined Mike and Chris into one.

The father is a better villain than what Marvel and DC have been producing lately, damn. He makes Joe Jackson look like father of the year.

I liked it, but didn't love it.

The Man
1972

6.5/10

This film just randomly popped up in my YouTube recommendations yesterday morning. It came up cuz I had recently reviewed “Encounter With The Unknown” which was written by Rod Serling (The Twilight Zone), he wrote the screen adaptation for this film which is from a novel. I watched it last night.

I had never heard about this film. And I’m surprised that it has never been repeatedly replayed during a POTUS election year the way they always do with Robert Redfords “The Candidate”. It never popped up during the Obama administration either.

The film was made for TV back in the days when they made movies for the Big 3 Networks. So it never released in theaters. I looked thru the Net and searched thru my cable box looking for it on a streaming service or cable channel and it’s not listed anywhere. The only place I found it was the YouTube recommendation I got that someone uploaded like 10 years ago.

Being it debuted on ABC and produced by Paramount . It must be one of those films that has been forgotten and buried in a storage room on their lots. I also could not find any reviews or interviews by James Earl Jones referring to it.

The premise of the film revolves around the Continuity of Government put in place in 1947 by President Harry Truman. The film starts off immediately going into this and proceeds for the next 20+ minutes with JEJ having to adjust to it. He does a good job acting out the shock of unexpectedly being made POTUS.

The first 30 minutes will piss you off with how people under JEJ reacted to him. JEJ gets his groove after that first 30 minutes and holds it to the end of the film. Being this film was made for network TV, they were unable to go hardcore with the racism due to network censorship at the time. The word “******” is only used by Black actors, white actors use other negative terms.

It has an all-Star cast of well known and familiar actors in major supporting roles. Burgess Meredith does a good job doing a “Sen. Jesse Helms” type character. His portrayal is completely different from what you are familiar with in other well known projects he is known for.

The film goes downhill in the last 30 minutes trying to put out a message. The main plot is the POTUS dealing with an international incident between the US and apartheid South Africa. There is a shit load of stuff that could/should have happened in the film, but time restraint keeps it from going in-depth.

Also keep in mind while watching it that this film came out in 1972 and was filmed before the 1972 POTUS election with Nixon re-election. Nixon had not instituted “The Southern Strategy” yet and the film takes place just under 10 years of the Civil Rights and Voting Rights Act being signed. So don’t go watching it like “Neil Degrasse Tyson”, keep in mind the era it was released.

The YouTube copy is grainy. I suggest watching it on a Smart TV that will automatically clean it up some, I recommend not watching it on a laptop, phone or tablet. I watched it last night on my phone hooked up to my LCD TV in my truck and it was ok but not good, I plan on rewatching directly on my TV that has the YouTube app on my cable box.

I’m looking now for a good contact email for Disney/Paramount letting them know this film needs to be remastered. It does make you wonder how many good lost films are out sitting buried and forgotten some where in Hollywood.

Synopsis

A U.S. senator (James Earl Jones) runs the White House because the president, vice president and speaker of the house cannot.

In an interview with Greg Braxton of the Los Angeles Times that ran January 16, 2009, four days before Barack Obama was inaugurated as president, Jones was asked about having portrayed the fictional first black U.S. president on film.

He replied: "I have misgivings about that one. It was done as a TV special. Had we known it was to be released as a motion picture, we would have asked for more time and more production money. I regret that."[5]

Joy Ride

Joy & Jeers

PRAISE: Joy Ride joins No Hard Feelings in this new era of Women behaving badly movies. This story about Audrey who's business trip to Asia goes sideways, enlists the help of Lolo, her childhood best friend, Kat, a college friend, and Deadeye, Lolo's eccentric cousin. Of course nothing goes as planned and it's a crazy, gross out,sex filled ride with a lot of heart. This comedy leans hard on it's Rating
Sometimes comedies like this can get it all wrong and go to over the top but i think Joy Ride ends up somewhere right in the middle but the cast including Ashley Park, Sherry Cola, Stephanie Hsu, Sabrina Wu
all turn in game for anything and enthusiastic performances. Even with all of the sight gags and raunchiness the movie manages to squeeze in some celebrations of asian culture.Definitely some solid laugh out loud moments.

PROBLEMS: Some scenes feel and fall flat.As soon as i saw a character it was extremely predictable on how the scene the character was in would play out. At times it seems the writers forgot what they were going for. There is a been there done that feel to how some things play out that definitely reminded me of some of the same story threads that were in comedies like Bridesmaids and Girls Trip.

Scale of 1 to 10 a 7½
Stephanie Hsu did well. I'm nobody posted her fluffy ass
