The Man
1972
6.5/10
This film just randomly popped up in my YouTube recommendations yesterday morning. It came up cuz I had recently reviewed “Encounter With The Unknown” which was written by Rod Serling (The Twilight Zone), he wrote the screen adaptation for this film which is from a novel. I watched it last night.
I had never heard about this film. And I’m surprised that it has never been repeatedly replayed during a POTUS election year the way they always do with Robert Redfords “The Candidate”. It never popped up during the Obama administration either.
The film was made for TV back in the days when they made movies for the Big 3 Networks. So it never released in theaters. I looked thru the Net and searched thru my cable box looking for it on a streaming service or cable channel and it’s not listed anywhere. The only place I found it was the YouTube recommendation I got that someone uploaded like 10 years ago.
Being it debuted on ABC and produced by Paramount . It must be one of those films that has been forgotten and buried in a storage room on their lots. I also could not find any reviews or interviews by James Earl Jones referring to it.
The premise of the film revolves around the Continuity of Government put in place in 1947 by President Harry Truman. The film starts off immediately going into this and proceeds for the next 20+ minutes with JEJ having to adjust to it. He does a good job acting out the shock of unexpectedly being made POTUS.
The first 30 minutes will piss you off with how people under JEJ reacted to him. JEJ gets his groove after that first 30 minutes and holds it to the end of the film. Being this film was made for network TV, they were unable to go hardcore with the racism due to network censorship at the time. The word “******” is only used by Black actors, white actors use other negative terms.
It has an all-Star cast of well known and familiar actors in major supporting roles. Burgess Meredith does a good job doing a “Sen. Jesse Helms” type character. His portrayal is completely different from what you are familiar with in other well known projects he is known for.
The film goes downhill in the last 30 minutes trying to put out a message. The main plot is the POTUS dealing with an international incident between the US and apartheid South Africa. There is a shit load of stuff that could/should have happened in the film, but time restraint keeps it from going in-depth.
Also keep in mind while watching it that this film came out in 1972 and was filmed before the 1972 POTUS election with Nixon re-election. Nixon had not instituted “The Southern Strategy” yet and the film takes place just under 10 years of the Civil Rights and Voting Rights Act being signed. So don’t go watching it like “Neil Degrasse Tyson”, keep in mind the era it was released.
The YouTube copy is grainy. I suggest watching it on a Smart TV that will automatically clean it up some, I recommend not watching it on a laptop, phone or tablet. I watched it last night on my phone hooked up to my LCD TV in my truck and it was ok but not good, I plan on rewatching directly on my TV that has the YouTube app on my cable box.
I’m looking now for a good contact email for Disney/Paramount letting them know this film needs to be remastered. It does make you wonder how many good lost films are out sitting buried and forgotten some where in Hollywood.
