An Act of Violence
1964

4/10

I only watched this flick cuz it co-stars Jayne Mansfield. I got her saved on my Cable box. I watched it on tubi this morning.

Don’t get yourself excited on this cuz she is barely in it. And when she is, she is covered up. There is an opening sequence of her in bed wearing lingerie rolling in money. Another where her shirt is ripped off (you don’t see it happening) and all you see is her wearing a black industrial cup bra. Another scene has her in a turtle neck and black bikini bottoms.

Whoever the director was needs to get slapped.

The film is from Germany and is titled for the US as “Dog Eat Dog”. tubi has it listed as that.

The premise of the film has been done a zillion times since the 1930s up to today. Nothing new.

When looking up the film, I discovered that she was pregnant with her daughter Mariska Hargitay (Law & Order: SVU) while filming.

Synopsis

Veteran crook Lylle Corbett (Cameron Mitchell) has stolen $1 million from his boss, Dolph Kostis (Ivor Salter), and he intends to stay alive long enough to spend it. But Kostis is on his trail. Then, Kostis' main squeeze, Darlene (Jayne Mansfield), steals the money after Kostis tosses Corbett over a cliff. Corbett survives, though, and he and Darlene hide out at a run-down Mediterranean hotel. But even there the guests grow suspicious, with everyone wanting a piece of the action.

John Wick 4 was weak. I actually preferred the 1st one over the 4th. Glad I didn't see it in the theaters bc I would've definitely fell asleep on it. Production wise it was solid but other than that its not worth the time spent watching it.

Joy Ride

Joy & Jeers

PRAISE: Joy Ride joins No Hard Feelings in this new era of Women behaving badly movies. This story about Audrey who's business trip to Asia goes sideways, enlists the help of Lolo, her childhood best friend, Kat, a college friend, and Deadeye, Lolo's eccentric cousin. Of course nothing goes as planned and it's a crazy, gross out,sex filled ride with a lot of heart. This comedy leans hard on it's Rating
Sometimes comedies like this can get it all wrong and go to over the top but i think Joy Ride ends up somewhere right in the middle but the cast including Ashley Park, Sherry Cola, Stephanie Hsu, Sabrina Wu
all turn in game for anything and enthusiastic performances. Even with all of the sight gags and raunchiness the movie manages to squeeze in some celebrations of asian culture.Definitely some solid laugh out loud moments.

PROBLEMS: Some scenes feel and fall flat.As soon as i saw a character it was extremely predictable on how the scene the character was in would play out. At times it seems the writers forgot what they were going for. There is a been there done that feel to how some things play out that definitely reminded me of some of the same story threads that were in comedies like Bridesmaids and Girls Trip.

Scale of 1 to 10 a 7½

Thanks for the review, JBlaze.

Been listening to some of the early podcast reviews of late. Good to read your take as well.

Was it too over the top / making you suspend your disbelief too much at this point (especially with a nearly 3-hour run time)?

Agreed re: the production and cinematography. It looks great.

That and The long take fight sequences got old quick imo

My pops said he preferred the small budget feel of the first 1 - 2 movies. The stakes were higher.

Whereas in 3 and 4 they were stylistically better, but it was just hundreds of random, nameless people dying. As a viewer you just don’t care how many John Does John Wick kills.

Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One

Mission Accomplished

PRAISE: Tom Cruise and Co's mission was to bring some thrills to the Summer and they do and then some. Aside from his mother Margaret ,Uncle Donald and his ex wife he doesn't really have any family.
His IMF team are his family and friends. With those familial ties come connections to others and the problems they have so of course Ethan is going to help them and protect them any way he can.
I think it was wise to use this in the movie because it grounds it and gives it emotional weight. This plays out in some great scenes with several other characters. All of the actors do a great job with the inclusion of Haley Attwell as a complication filling but lovely lady.C Chief villain Gabriel (Esai Morales), and his henchwoman, Paris (Pom Klementieff)and the relentless pursuer agent Jasper Briggs (Shea Whigham)
Every character means something either as thorns in the side or allies.
Director Christopher McQuarrie and Cruise wanted audiences to be immersed in and feel like they are part of the action sequences and fight scenes and its brilliantly done in some catch your breath if you can manner.
Portions of the film reminded me of some of my favorite movies and TV shows like Sneakers and Rabbit Hole.
The movie even amusingly pokes fun at itself in a couple of scenes.
For the last 3 MI movies I've said Ethan Hunt is America's James Bond and a couple of threads in this movie make it a fact.
The movie definitely left me with questions that I hope part 2 provides answers to

PROBLEMS: Things get a bit jumbled here and there. There are a couple of far too precise and convenient moments. I did start to feel the length of the movie at times.

Scale of 1 to 10 an 8½

Cruise spoke about his admiration of Harrison Ford last week and how he hopes to play Ethan Hunt until he's 80 . I think he can probably pull it off.

Guardians of The Galaxy Vol. 3 - Weakest entry in the series. Keeping it short many of the jokes fall flat and come off lame.

The Good - The High Evolutionary was an interesting adversary and the effects were good. The final fight in the corridor was dope and the space battle was cool.

The Worst - Rocket's backstory was so sad it left the film with an uneven tone really dragging it down.

Anyway two and a half stars(**1/2) Sad to see the series end on a sour note.

I actually thought that Rockets backstory aided the film. Nobody knew about him how he became who he was and what he went through.

Seeing how clever he always was was brilliant in my opinion. Him losing his friends the way he did, I let out that same death howl when I found out my brother died

It was an emotional roller coaster and my opinion one of the best because everyone either played their part or flat out said I'm tired of playing this role the way mantis and Drax did with bossy ass nebula. I give it a solid eight

In the Godfather, Why didn't Michael Corleone ever tell his sister Connie that her husband Carlo set her brother Santino Corleone up to be killed? Why would he rather have his sister hate him, than hate the son of a bitch who had her brother killed?

Is that because she loved him even though he beat the shit out of her, and he felt she would blame him for killing her husband in spite of her husband having a hand in getting her brother killed?
Connie knew, she said as much when she confronted him at the end, that everyone blamed Carlo for Sonny.

Way too long and too much pandering to the Chinese.

Birdbox: Barcelona
2023

3/10

I’m not gonna spoil it.

What I will say is the film plays out completely different from the first film and the trailer isn’t giving anything away.

My suggestion is just watch the last 10 minutes of the film. It’s the best part of the film and sets it up for a possible 3rd movie.

Hopefully if a 3rd film is made, it follows up what’s in the last 10 minutes of this mess.

Synopsis

After a mysterious force decimates the world's population, Sebastian must navigate his own survival journey through the desolate streets of Barcelona.
