MOVIES ~ Any of ya'll seen any good (or shitty) movies in recent weeks/months? Post reviews, feedback, movie news, trailers, recommendations, etc ...

Watched this movie the other day. Pretty good. I was only familiar with Cailee Spaeny from her work a few years back on the series Mare of Easttown. Thought she was a good choice for this role. Knew Jacob Elordi from his roles in the movie Deep Water (with Ben Affleck and Ana de Armas) and the series Euphoria.

The story itself focuses on the courting / grooming process that took place, the hot and cold nature of their relationship, prescription addiction, one's loss of identity, etc.

The movie doesn't focus on his career successes or music. Shows the amount of time his friends were around. The sleeping in until 3 - 4 in the afternoon, and so on. The time away filming movies.

Some of the most effective scenes are the simple ones like her being alone at Graceland. Questioning him re: romantic relationships in Hollywood w/ other women, trying to bond more with her spouse but being kept at arm's length. You already know things won't pan out well with getting married / having a child, etc. Very effective song usage in the final scene into end credits.

Seen The Color Purple Musical with Fantasia Barrino and Taraji P Henson recently.

Of course it wasn't better than the original film.

They rushed over plot points and character building moments and the favorite quotables from the original movie, my guess is to make more time for the musical dialogue. That kinda cheapened the movie for me it's like the filmmaker was telling the audience "no need to develop character or get emotionally involved you should just enjoy the singing and dancing".

I hate when they remake movies, then I hate when they remake movies and skip all the beats that made the OG movie the cultural phenomenon that it grew to be over the years. Tha'ts part of the reason why I hate remakes so much.

I did enjoy the 3rd act of the movie, it made for a happier and more redemptive ending for Celie and the other characters than the original movie did.

I seen it on a Tuesday with the lady when tickets were only $6 for a slight night out, but I'd save your money and put it toward a better experience than watching this in the theater unless you just that bored.

Love and monsters

I saw this while on vacation. And I thought this was good. This is one of those post apocalyptic sci-fi movies. That has good acting and great cinematography.

I liked the run time and I thought the story was excellent. I definitely will be checking this movie out again. And I highly recommend it.

Peacock
The equalizer

Been trying to watch this forever. Without trying to directly pay for it

I thought this was a great action film something I can see myself watching again. I would recommend this movie. For people who haven't seen it yet.

Netflix
The Equalizer 3

I watched this before watching part 1. And I liked the supposed closing to the story. I thought this was good. I can see myself watching all three parts of the series in one sitting. I would recommend this and the other two parts of the series.

I would like to see a prequel where the main character gets his training and eventually in the field.

I was going to do more reviews But, I got side tracked in playing video games. While I was on vacation more specifically Resident evil 8 and Resident evil 3 remake.

The Color Purple

The first 15 minutes I was thinking this is some bullshit, then I started liking it. Despite the singing. Some of the songs were better than others.

The acting was good and I like the changes. It was a lot more uplifting and positive instead of being so dark. I thought all the actresses did their thing. Colman Domingo is an underrated actor. Dr Dre shocked me as well.

Did have some problems. Whoopi's children shouldn't look almost as old as Whoopi. I was like how old are these muthafuckas, Black don't crack, but they look 50. They needed to give Fantasia some more grey hair or something.

Also they could have left some scenes alone, because they couldn't duplicate the tension of the knife scene and the slap/fight looked like a parody. Also they fast forwarded some things, but overall it was a good movie and I don't really fuck with musicals :dunno:

Good to see Louis Gosset still kicking it and acting still. Just saw him in Outlaw Johnny Black.

I don't remember the first Color Purple being that great, but I haven't seen it since I was a kid probably. I'm tempted to rewatch it.

Gran Turismo
2023

6.5/10

I watched this last night with my sons on Netflix.

It’s a pretty good and entertaining sports/action film. Race sequences were done well and according to my sons, they did a good job combining the game to the race sequences.

It’s a basic plot that has been done before in Hollywood since forever, so nothing new there.

For the Militants, the main character is bi-racial with a BM/WW as parents, he also has a brother. They have a working class lifestyle.

At the end of the film, I discovered that it’s actually based on an actual story and all that was depicted actually took place. Being I don’t follow the racing circuit or play video games, my old Ass is out of the loop. My two sons said they heard of him cuz they play games.

Overall, it’s a good family film to watch. It has just enough to keep everyone in the family interested.

Synopsis

The true story of a team of unlikely underdogs -- a working-class gamer, a former race-car driver, and an idealistic motorsport executive -- who risk it all to take on the most elite sport in the world.

Colman Domingo is an underrated actor.

Have enjoyed his work on the series Euphoria in recent years as well. Especially in that standalone episode which focuses on him & Zendaya's character "Rue" for the entirety at the restaurant / diner.

Godzilla Roses Again
1955

6/10

This is the official sequel to the first Godzilla film I reviewed this past week in this thread. I watched it yesterday.

I don’t recall ever seeing it, I thought I had seen all the 50s thru 70s Godzilla films, this one I must have overlooked.

Just like the first film, the story mainly focuses on the human characters and their reaction to Godzilla. This film has Godzilla returning and they do explain how Godzilla exists in this film from what we saw how it ended in the prior film.

Another monster named Anguirus is introduced. He and Godzilla have a pretty decent fight sequence. Those two mofos don’t hold back going against each other and it actually looks believable with the actors fighting in those rubber suits. It’s the highlight of the film.

The film ends this time with Godzilla being taken down, but the way they take him down makes it more believable for him to return in future films. It’s obvious the producers realized they got a hit franchise with the success of the first film.

This was a recording from TCM. They had it with sub-titles.

Synopsis

Fishing scout-pilots are startled to discover a new monster named Anguirus alongside a second Godzilla. The monsters make their way towards Osaka as Japan can only brace for tragedy and relive the horror of Godzilla once more.
