8. Tory Lanez - not an emcee but definitely Drake’s dancehall/afrobeat/pop-r&b lane

All said and done, does this look like a body of work from an actual emcee that DOESN'T deserve critique to you? His answers are always in interviews or articles, never on wax.

He’s a great entertainer and I’ve always said that but it’s highly disingenuous to say that he doesn’t deserve the criticism as a hip hop emcee. He dips one foot into the emcee arena and then backs out when heavyweights are in there, only to straddle the ropes against them and pick on opponents in a lesser than weight class to look good.

He deserves all the smoke and some in that regard.

His fans argue Take Care is his classic but I don't see it. Good Kid Maad City is Kendrick's. I'd argue TPAB too. It's been 12 years since TC dropped. Is anyone (outside of Drake stans) saying it's on the level of GKMC or TPAB? Is it on any lists of all time great albums? Are any of his albums discussed with Aquemini or The Blueprint? Part of that is he means heavy into singing but so did The Fugees and The Score is a classic. I don't know, I try to be open minded but I just don't see a classic album. He's got singles for days. Hit upon hit upon hit. The biggest pop star in hip hop and I don't think it's close. But he hasn't created a complete body of work with regards to a cohesive album.

You can’t tell me you was riding around with your windows down in the summer singing these songs. I think Jay-Z is number 3 in my top MC’s. Jay is more marketable to the women just like Drake. Though certain songs I like Stay Schemin and Started from the bottom.

But Hotline Bling, HoustonLantaVegas, No guidance is going straight to the women. Therefore he’s this generation Jay Z due to his popularity.
