Franklin County Jail

A former National Guardsman and school security guard at a Jewish academy in Ohio has been arrested and charged for making terrorist threats against the students he was supposed to be protecting.
Court documents obtained by The Daily Beast show Thomas Develin was arrested in Franklin County on Wednesday.
Police were alerted to a photo circulating on social media site Discord of Develin holding a firearm while working as a security guard at Columbus Torah Academy, ABC 6 Columbus reported. Develin allegedly captioned the March 11 post to say he was “at a Jewish school and about to make it everyone's problem.”

In separate posts, Develin allegedly said, “The playground is about to turn into a self-defense situation” and that he wanted to “shoot parents coming to pick up their children,” CBS 10 Columbus reported, citing court documents.

The court documents also allege Develin, 24, had made disparaging comments on social media in the past about communities of color, women, and law enforcement, ABC 6 reported.

Administrators at Columbus Torah Academy declined to comment on the matter but referred The Daily Beast to JewishColumbus, a local organization dedicated to uniting the Jewish community through schools, temples of worship, security, and programming.
In a statement, JewishColumbus said Develin’s posts were “an act of antisemitism” and “a cowardly act of intimidation.”
“It was an attempt to silence our Jewish beliefs. For far too long Jews have been mentally and physically intimidated in spaces online, at schools, universities and in our community. Virulent antisemitic rhetoric breeds extremism and has no place in our community,” the statement read. “We are a proud and diverse Jewish community. We stand resolute against antisemitism and remain committed to safeguarding our institutions. It is our right to live peacefully as Jews and we will not cower to intimidation. Our Jewish community is here to stay and we will not be silenced.”
JewishColumbus President and CEO Joel Marcovitch told The Daily Beast that the organization’s biggest priority is security, especially after the 2018 shooting at the Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh. He added that, sadly, the $1 million a year it costs for security in the community takes away from other important programs—like schools, assisting the needy, or providing support to Holocaust survivors.
“Anti-semitism isn’t just a Jewish problem; it’s a societal problem,” Marcovitch said.
He noted that background checks do not cover social media accounts, saying Develin “on paper...was the perfect candidate to be a security guard because he had the credentials and the training in order to do that. But again, you never know how people conduct themselves online.”

NBC 4 reported that prosecutors claimed Develin was suspended from the Ohio National Guard, but his LinkedIn profile still lists him as a sergeant and air artillery operator with part-time employment. His position as a security guard at Columbus Torah Academy is not listed.
In 2020, Develin’s father, William Develin, was awarded by local and state Mason lodges for his involvement as a troop leader with the Boy Scouts of America, The Pike County News Watchman reported. While his father was a Scoutmaster, Develin achieved the Eagle Scout rank just before joining the Ohio National Guard in high school.
Develin’s family did not immediately return The Daily Beast’s request for comment Friday.
Columbus Torah Academy is a K-12 private learning institution that boasts a mission to “develop…students into educated, contributing, active, aware members of contemporary American and Jewish societies.” The school offers both secular education, as well “a modern Orthodox Zionist framework.”
It is unclear how long Develin worked as a school security guard. He is being held on a $1 million bond, and a preliminary hearing is set for April 8.

Illinois Police Officer Resigns After White Supremacist Posts Surface Online

The Tueday resignation of Springfield (IL) Police Department Officer Aaron Paul Nichols, 46, came shortly after his department announced an investigation into the posts, first surfaced by Anonymous Comrades Collective (ACC), a group of anti-fascist researchers.

“When I seize power, ‘hate crimes’ will be encouraged,” the Gab account researchers connected to Nichols said. Many of Nichols’ alleged posts discuss killing Black and Jewish people, the same people he had sworn to protect for nearly two decades. (Note: Several of the quoted posts include uncensored racial slurs.) “I have metal stamps. I think I’ll just stamp 14/88 into every ****** quarter I get,” another of the Gab posts read. “Easy.”
The number 14 refers to a white supremacist slogan, and 88 refers to “HH,” or “Heil Hitler.” “******* ruin everything,” another post read. “Even if it’s White doing the stealing they’re likely selling the meat to blaq [sic] run restaurants or trading it to ******* for dope. Real talk.”

A conspiracy-minded men’s rights activist who bragged online about storming the U.S. Capitol was sentenced to three and a half years in prison on Monday after a search of his Upper East Side apartment turned up a cache of illegal firearms, the Manhattan district attorney said.
Samuel Fisher, 33, was charged with criminal possession of a loaded firearm, a felony in New York that carries a maximum sentence of 15 years, according to the Manhattan district attorney’s office.
Among the illegal weapons discovered in his Yorkville apartment were an AR-15 style assault rifle, a “ghost gun” pistol, a shotgun, as well as several pre-loaded high-capacity magazines, the district attorney said.
Fisher – who used the alias “Brad Holiday” on a sparsely-watched YouTube channel devoted to "helping men get high value girls” – was arrested just two weeks after the January 6th attack on the U.S. Capitol in 2021.
Prosecutors said that he traveled to D.C. with multiple weapons and the intention of causing harm. He later boasted about being on the “frontlines” of the riot, writing on Facebook that it was “dangerous and violent. People died...but it was fucking great if you ask me,” according to a complaint.
“Samuel Fisher is a dangerous conspiracy theorist who participated in one of the gravest attacks on our democracy,” Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg said in a statement. “Not only did he threaten to commit violence against his fellow citizens, he had the potential to follow through with his arsenal of advanced weaponry and ammunition.”
His sentencing on state charges comes on top of the federal charges he is currently facing for his role in the deadly insurrection at the U.S. Capitol. In federal court, he has pleaded not guilty to charges of entering a restricted building and disruptive conduct in a restricted building.
Fisher is one a handful of January 6th defendants who are self-described “pick-up artists,” a strain of misogynistic anti-feminism that seemed to flourish under former President Donald J. Trump. On his website, he offered to enroll men in a $150 “Attraction Accelerator” with lessons that included “How to look like a Chad” and “Face Care of the Gods.”
He also appeared to dabble in anti-Semitic and Q-Anon conspiracies, sharing articles that likened Jews to cannibals and speculating about whether Trump would hang members of the “deep state.”
On the eve of January 6th, he wrote that the event would be the “Most Historically Important Day of Our Lives.”
“Patriot show up in the millions with guns,” he wrote. “They execute all the treasonous members of government and rebuild.”
Inquiries to Fisher’s attorney were not returned.

Newborn Wild Horse Orphaned After Visitors With "Best of Intentions" Remove It From Herd

A newborn wild horse is being raised as a domesticated animal after it was removed from its herd by tourists visiting the North Carolina barrier island last month.

The foal followed a group of people on Shackleford Banks for two hours on March 26 with no other horses around, according to a release from the Cape Lookout National Seashore.
"When the visitors moved to their boat to leave the island the foal tried to follow them," the seashore explained. "With the best of intentions, thinking that the foal would drown, they lifted the foal into the boat and departed, thereby removing the horse from its natural habitat, its mother, and the herd."
It is likely that the foal initially lost contact with his mother when a stallion, sensing danger, rushed its harem away from a location. The stallion might have then kept the mare from going back to get the foal because he did not want to lose sight of her.
Dr. Sue Stuska, the park's wildlife biologist, said in the news release that when separated from their mothers, young horses will follow other horses or even people.
The orphan foal is currently in the care of the Foundation for Shackleford Horses.
"Once a foal has been removed from the seashore, it is unlikely that the park can reunite it with its dam (mother)," the seashore said. "Although these visitors thought that they were doing the right thing, this foal can't be returned to Shackleford Banks and will now live a life as a domesticated animal, rather than as a wild stallion."
As a result of their actions, the unnamed visitors have been cited. If convicted, they could face up to six months in jail and/or be fined $5,000.

Shackleford Banks, the Southern-most barrier island in Cape Lookout National Seashore, is home to more than 100 wild horses. Visitors are required to always stay at least 50 feet away from the horses.
