I don't think it's exactly "fair"... but at the same time, I understand it. I think a lot of people are looking at the event through 2022 eyes, but you have to remember that this happened back in 2009. That was a completely different world, with a completely different culture. In the present era, porn is so mainstream... everybody is open about watching porn. You got big music stars with Onlyfans. Some popular indie music chicks also do webcam shit.

Back in 2009 porn was still a dirty word and it was very much separate from the world of mainstream entertainment. Being a porn star was NOT gonna help anybody's music career... especially when you're making the kind of music that was targeted primarily at teenage girls. And also, Farrah Franklin had been struggling for years to relaunch her career and when it looked like she was about to make some headway... this is NOT the kind of association she needed on her head. Like... you used to be in a group with Beyonce. Now you're in a group with a chick who got bukkaked on tape? Ain't that hustling backwards?

But here's the thing: You could perhaps make the argument that maybe the notoriety of having a girl with a sex tape might not have hurt the group. Maybe it could have even helped. After all, this was the period when Kim Kardashian had just gotten famous off a sex tape. It had been a couple of years since Paris Hilton had become famous off a sex tape. By 2009 were still in an era when black girls were still hoping that the same thing could happen for them. Maybe it might not be bad to have a member in the group who "had a sex tape out there."

And in fact, Bethany said that she had told the group and its management that "she had a sex tape out there"... and they had been cool with it. It seems that what she didn't tell them that it was not just "a sex tape" but that she had had a multi-year mainstream porn career in which most of her scenes were anal (that was super taboo in the black community back then too).

So I don't blame the group for ejecting her. Having a full-on porn star in the group was NOT gonna help them. And in any case, it doesn't matter because the scandal caused the group to implode anyway. So it's not like she was kicked out of the group so much as the revelation just destroyed the group.

The funny thing about that is the late 60s and early 70s were called "porno chic" since that was the first time porn made it into the mainstream culture.

Stuff like "Deep Throat," "Behind the Green Door," and "The Devil in Miss Jones" were runaway hits in mainstream society. They were talked about on TV and in the papers. The porn stars in those films, like Linda Lovelace and Marilyn Chambers, became household names.

Obviously everything is cyclical so society definitely has become conservative since the 70s in some ways. That said, I find it hard to believe most people were uptight about porn in the 00s. I think it had more to do with the dynamics of the group itself. They probably just wanted to project a "wholesome" image and appeal to a more middle-of-the-road, straightlaced crowd at that point in time and felt having a porn actress as a member wouldn't be conducive to that.

The 1980s was when there was a backlash to the sexual excesses of the 1960s and 70s. Evangelical Christians became politically active and formed the Moral Majority to sweep Ronald Reagan into power. Televangelists became mainstream stars and a couple of them went hard after Larry Flynt, Bob Guccione and Hugh Hefner. Hefner in particular had to scale the explicitness of Playboy WAY down. And mind you, even in the days of "porno chic" and all that, black folks were not into all that as much. Despite the image of blacks being sexually wild, we're usually much more conservative than the white mainstream. Black people are usually late embracing a lot of this shit.

Nowadays everybody is into porn because you have Pornhub and like 50 other tube sites and apps that allow people to explore the vast world of XXX in complete privacy and convenience.

What about Maitland Ward,who started out in mainstream(Boy Meets World) then crossed over into XXX,and now about to cross back over into mainstream again(got cast as the lead in some new suspense movie and also developing a sitcom co-starring a couple of other pornactors she worked with)

Exactly. That kind of thing was much, much harder back then... the idea of someone crossing over from mainstream Hollywood to porn was just insanity. And then crossing from porn to Hollywood was something that people tried (Jenna Jameson, Sasha Grey) but it was really, really, really hard to get taken seriously. Even a director like Gregory Dark who was a big-time porn producer in the 80s and then crossed over to shooting music videos for the likes of Britney Spears, when word of his porn past became widely known, the mainstream started shunning him. Nobody wanted to be associated with him.

Yeah, I know about the Moral Majority backlash. In the case of Hefner, I think he was glad to tame his product down. He only started to go harder because guys like Flynt, Guccione, and to a lesser extent Al Goldstein started to eat away at his sales with their harder content. That started the whole "pubic wars" where they were competing with each other to show more and more.

I was born in '87 so while I consider myself old, I'm probably considered a toddler on this site (Larry Holmes smiley). I got my first computer, with Internet access (dialup), in the late 90s. By the time the 00s rolled around, I had all the porn I wanted at my fingertips. I've been to a few porn shops but that was like going to a museum for me. I just wanted to see what it felt like back in the day when people had to go into places like that to get jerk off material.

When did word get out about his past? On his Wikipedia profile, he was directing a music video for Disney as late as 2002. By the late 00s, he had crossed over into films though mostly independent. He's worked with a lot of big names in his mainstream career. If anything, what hurt him was that KKK scene with Sahara in "Let Me Tell Ya 'bout Black Chicks" and the fact that he was proud and unapologetic about it.

But the reason I brought it up was because your evocation of the porno chic of the 1970s, and Deep Throat and all seemed as if you were implying there was a straight, unbroken line from the 70s to the 2000s with regard to society's permissiveness. Thanks for the reply first of all. This is a great discussion. I agree with a lot of what you're saying because I get the impression you are older (no offense) and experienced this shit either first hand or just was more aware of it.

I get what you're saying about the distinction between being more lax about sex and accepting porn. This society is schizophrenic about it really. It enjoys sex work but hates sex workers. It's like enjoying Black music/culture but hating Black ppl which I know happens all of the time. It's insane.

Spice Girls probably wasn't the best example. I just mentioned them because they seem like they had more leeway than Destiny's Child back then. Madonna might be a better example since she released her book "Sex" in the early 90s when she still had a young fan base. I also read somewhere that Jenna Jameson would get a lot of adolescent girls at her book signings for "Have Sex Like a Porn Star" but that's a bit more recent I believe.

"American Pie," like you said, was definitely more suggestive than explicit. But it seemed like it opened up a doorway to raunchier and raunchier mainstream movies. Think of the raunchy movie spoofs by the Wayans brothers for instance. I believe it also had a desensitizing effect on the public and allowed it to accept more stuff. I can remember being in high school and watching infomercials for "Girls Gone Wild" and "Wild Party Girls." Many social conservatives would argue that was the "pornification" of our culture.

Anyway, it's very interesting discussing all of this recent cultural history.
