Oil Rig Work Apparently Pays MAJOR Bread...

got invited to an interview...next week....with Phillips 66...

this should be the final step...before i know if i'm gonna get hired...

so i obviously said enough shit right in that tabletop exercise...i thought i might've fucked up in the group exercises and been too opinionated... but whatever now...i made it to the next step...

score one for the good guys...and people who can read and follow directions...

job is 200 miles away from where i'm currently livin'...but if they hire me..i'm on the first thing smokin' up there...
How it work out?

Nope, texted for Exxon and Shell, passed both. Waited, interviewed went well but was never called back for Shell. Exxon I tried to get friend of friends who said they were gonna pull my app but never happened.

Everyone who passes the Exxon test isn't going to just walk into that job with no experience. Sometimes you need to start out as Operator intern somewhere to get your feet wet. Sometimes you need to start out as a tank cleaner to get into a door. There are tons of jobs out there for folks who want to work in the plant. Not knocking you but I shake my heads at people who just want to wake up and be an Operator one day. I started my journey out as an intern making 14 bucks a hour. Then got on with another big company and paid my dues. Been in this shit 13/14 years now to get where i am. I been where you at.

Almost 10 yrs
Crazy

whats your current situation?
I meant tested. Was a typo.
I am self employed. But need to get back to a 9-5 in another month or so if things don't pick up.

A friend wanted me to go get my safety cert which is like $1,500. But my other neighbor told me it was pretty much worthless unless I have a shoe in. Which I do. The guy who wanted me take the course can start me at $36/hr but that job is in Sugarland and I'm in Mont Belvieu. That's at least an hour and change of driving daily.

So thought it was easier for me to just find an IT job.

I know that. My son has a ton of certs under his belt, been in plants since he was 19, now 29. He was doing millwright.
I know the climate. It's just back then so many of my neighbors/friends were telling me just take the exam, I'll get you in. Never happened.

I'm up in the air about out here right now. My mindset is probably to move to crazy ass Florida.

I want to say 2 have contacted me. Since 2007 when I went into Operations I’ve had 4 people follow me to Process school. All 4 had Bachelors degrees too. One is an Operator, one is a cost analysis after 5 years being a I&E Tech, my Buddy never became an Operator but got into leak detection /manager, and my cousin never left his old job. I’ve moved into the midstream sector now and dress business casual now on days. It’s a wide open career field with a bunch of different lanes to get into. I’m training on something new but I’m planning on getting a degree in management and moving to another floor.

Going to hit you up. Not going to stay offshore forever.

I don't even know what a Cert is for a plant. I have degrees under my belt and that has opened doors for me. In this business or anything else you have to be willing to travel or re locate. I've worked in Texas City, on the ship channel, and even moved to another city for a job. I didn't let anything hold me back. I was willing to do anything to get on. Looking back on it I'm like whoa I really moved away. Even moving back to Houston to further my career I committed 1.5 to get to work with that I-10 traffic. Millwrights is a good craft especially if you can get on with a company and I mean like Exxon, Shell, etc not a contractor type company. If you with a contractor company you'll always be chasing the next turn around. The only time I worked turn arounds is because a unit at my refinery had one and I could go work it to make all that OT money.

Going to hit you up. Not going to stay offshore forever.
Alright Brother

Getting paper work in safety is worthless. So someone had a job for you making 36 a hour and you wouldn't do it? You stopped your own blessing. The amount of time you talking about commuting Ive done it. When you trying to get in a career you can't be no bitch saying oh thats far. Shoot when I was trying to get on I commuted from Houston to Texas City worked all day then commuted to Alvin at night for class. If its something you really want your ass will drive. I work with guys who drive from Brenham into Houston. Hmmmm you live in Mont Belveiu interesting.

Hope it works out for you man

how long is it usually before a drop in prices start to affect you guys ?
It's already happened. But there is still the maintenance and decommissioning of old fields. That's what I'm doing now. Sealing up old oil fields and bringing all the old manifolds and trees to surface and cementing in the well. There will be a phase 3 to pull up the old pipeline.

North sea is busy with wind farms, and the gulf is ok. They have cut back a lot already and there's not enough people if it picks up again

appreciate the knowledge

hope you stay busy bro

I just couldn't do the off shore thing. I know the money way better but I just can't. Working half the month and sit in an office good enough for me.

Are you guys hiring? Coming from offshore what would I need as far as education to break in?

depends on what your experience is. I have a Bachelors and and Associates with specific experience to my job. If I was you I’d get in indeed and look up companies your skill set. I came from being a Process Operator.

I have an associate in Electrical Technology and I'm about a year short of getting an engineering Electrical. 13 years offshore running ROV's and subsea tooling and intervention. I could probably finish up with night school. Wife has been bugging me to work at home but I love the 6 months off.

6 months off is hard to beat. I work the DuPont schedule where I’m off half the year with a 1 week long change monthly. I’m off right now for 7 days. Actually worked 2 nights of OT. It’s nice having a vacation monthly.

About to lose $$ that shit hit the offshore industry, and Trump is going to ban flying. I'm not due back for 3 weeks so if he blocks it 14 days I can get back to work.

Update, finally at work. My company is laying off people and they are giving me a $152 dollar a day pay cut.

However, they are bringing back my 401K option and giving me a salary when I'm not working. We will see where this goes. Covid might be the final nail in the coffin on the glory days of making close to $900 a day. It was good while it lasted.

Damn.

Corona Virus 19 has WRECKED some shops this year :smh:

A friend of mine works at Exxon in Texas

They just laid off a ton of workers
and are looking for reasons to lay off more

She had a review at the start of the year, before corona, gave her excellent and a raise

now they have reviewed it and said she is on probation...

a lot of those what didnt get excellent earlier have been let go

the moral is so low

Damn.

Yeah bro, I was scheduled for an 18 month contract. The job has been shut down since March. That personally cost me about $90K

The fucked up thing is they assigned me to this project that was due to run until April, and these bastards found so much gas they decided they don't need to drill any more wells and we are shutting down in about 2 weeks.

Meanwhile they gave my position to another guy for my old job that's starting in 2 weeks.:angry::lol::smh::lol::angry::roflmao:

I keep all of my training at 100% because of this. I know they are looking to drop people, but I have a lot of experience and I'm not making the max for my position. A couple of guys I know were asked to work shifts as a technician, and once you agree to that, they keep you in that position. The game is dirty right now.

yeah I think it was 1,900 and they had started compiling their list at the beginning of Covid. Exxon stock is struggling bad like most oil companies. My stock I have in the company makes me want to . I should of pulled my money 3 years ago but like everyone else I didn’t thinI anything like Covid would happen and tank the market.

Back at it, heading to the Canary Islands to finish setting up a system, then sailing to Angola. About 30 plus days.

They just sent an email about wage increases and bonuses coming back. We will see cause they are starving for people. All aspects and trades are hurting cause they let let so many people go.

My company is hiring, but if you have any experience I'd work through an agency. Straight cash, no medical or benefits, but door to door transportation and more $. If things don't drastically improve I might go agency too as they are paying close to $800 a day for someone with my skill level.

my cousin who is a project manager for pipeline was telling me he pleaded to his company owners don't take on no more jobs we don't have any workers to work. If ya'll want more projects you're going to have to raise the hourly rate to the hands. Cut some of ya'll profit to hire better people because they got tons of work paying well. I swear corporate is too greedy at times.

Sorry if you answered this already Lord but what about beginners with no experience? What does oil rig pay? I got over 10 years datacenter and and over 15 years overall IT experience, last year cybersecurity. What's really good Lord?

I'm curious about this as well

I have lab QC experience though

Pay is all over the fucking place now. Its hard to say. My company slashed pay starting in 2017. Right now they are hiring in the gulf of Mexico, but the pay is shitty. Around $225 a day for new hires. More for people with experience.

Full disclosure, at the height of it, I was making $810 a day plus a $50-100 dollar a day in country bonus. I would also get a retention bonus paid twice a year based on years of service, competency and safety records and position. Topped out at senior supervisor that was another $40K.

Then the oil crash (2017) and then covid slashed about 40% of that shit last October.

But now, all across the industry they are hurting for people and I've seen jobs advertised for someone at my skill level going for 850 British pounds a day. That's over $1200 bucks a day and more than I ever made. So know is the time to try and get on. I'd check rig zone, LinkedIn etc and see what's out there.

Our company has already been forced to increase pay, bring on bonus and up the 401k matching.

Also, some companies are giving base salary for the days you are at home. Between 15k-70k guaranteed whether you go offshore or not.

I'll post links later. Heading to the shipyard in a few hours to sail to Angola.

Would this translate into calculation of mud weights, or identifying silicate and other types of soil found while drilling? Geo labs and mud loggers sit in an air conditioned van all day, take samples here and there and drink coffee. You really have to look into the type of careers available and how your skills match up.

I was stuck on a rig in the gulf and missed 2 higher paying jobs due to lack of personnel. We are operating 1 to 2 guys short during 24 hour operations and it has killed moral.

Why slave for bullshit wages, when you can go through an agency and come back to the same job for a 30-40% increase in wages?

Now is the time, they are starving for people.
