Star Wars: Visions Details, Premiere Date Revealed At Anime Expo

Lucasfilm has revealed the first details about Star Wars: Visions, which will be produced by anime studios such as Trigger, Production IG and more.

Lucasfilm has announced that seven of the anime industry's top studios, including Trigger (Kill La Kill, SSSS. Dynazenon) and Production IG (Ghost in the Shell, Eden of the East) will be involved in the production of Star Wars: Visions, an anime anthology series set to premiere in the fall.

Lucasfilm says the shorts will feature a variety of art styles and represent a wide gamut of genres, ranging from tragic romances to comedic action pieces, and will even feature a rock opera. The producers of the project also revealed that the highly anticipated anthology will stream exclusively on Disney+ on Sept. 22.

The first short in the anthology is The Duel, by Kamikaze Douga, the studio behind the Jojo's Bizarre Adventure anime. The short will be produced in black and white with occasional splashes of color, and will focus on a story of self-sacrifice for the greater good. The short features new characters designed by Takashi Okazaki, who previously worked on Afro Samurai and Summer Wars.

Golden Kamuy's Geno Studio will produce the second story, Lop & Ocho, which has a more comedic tone and a cute, colorful art style.

The next short revealed, Tattoine Rhapsody, is by Studio Colorido. The short will be done in the style of a rock opera and will feature an appearance from bounty hunter Boba Fett. Colorido previously produced 2020's A Whisker Away and the anime adaptation of Tite Kubo's Bleach spinoff, Burn The Witch.

Two shorts will be created by studio Trigger. The shorts are called The Elder and The Twins, and true to Trigger's trademark over-the-top style, one of the shorts will apparently feature a lightsaber battle fought on top of a flying X-wing. The Twins will be directed by Gurren Lagann's Hiroyuki Imaishi, while The Elder will be directed by Masahiko Otsuka, best known for his work on FLCL and Little Witch Academia.

Kinema Citrus, the studio that produced Tokyo Magnitude 8.0, will create The Village's Bride, which will be a bittersweet story about an exiled Jedi and a young bride in a small village. The short will feature a score performed with traditional Japanese instruments.

The Night Is Short, Walk On Girl's Science Saru is producing a short called Akakiri, which tells the story of a Jedi who meets a princess. The short is directed by animator Eunyoung Choi and is inspired by the works of Akira Kurosawa. Science Saru is also producing a second short, T0-B1, which is about a droid and is said to be inspired by and have a similar tone to Astro Boy.

Finally, Production IG will create The Ninth Jedi, a story that focuses on the daughter of a legendary lightsaber-smith who has to deliver new weapons to a group of Jedi who may not even be alive anymore. The short will be directed by Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex's Kenji Kamiyama.

Here’s Your First Look at the Star Wars: Visions Anime Anthology Series
By Rebecca Alter@ralter

New Star Wars thing alert! For the very wide swath of people who are into both anime and Star Wars, LucasFilm has released a “special look” at its upcoming anthology series, Star Wars: Visions. The extended trailer, which features production stills and behind-the-scenes interviews with animators, premiered yesterday at Anime Expo Lite and showed off the wide variety of stories and styles that will make up the new anthology. Star Wars: Visions consists of nine new stories set in the Star Wars universe, rendered by seven different Japanese animation studios. The trailer gives a sneak peek into a “rock opera–style film” called Tatooine Rhapsody, an Astro Boy–inspired robo-romp called T0-B1, and some sort of space-furry adventure called Lop & Ocho, among others. It’s exciting to see Disney cede so much creative control to these different studios. Star Wars: Visions will stream on Disney+ September 22.

Grand Admiral Thrawn And Ezra Bridger Casting Confirmed | Exclusive Barside Buzz

LRM
July 23, 2021

Over a year ago LRM broke the news that Lucasfilm was planning on expanding the Star Wars Disney+ shows with an Ahsoka, Boba Fett, and a combined Ezra Bridger and Thrawn show. Since then Disney has announced the upcoming shows The Book of Boba Fett and Ahsoka coming December 2021 and 2022 respectively. With the debut of the live-action version of Ahsoka in The Mandalorian, we learned that the famed Togruta is on the hunt for Thrawn. It is safe to assume that Thrawn and Ezra are together since the last time we saw both characters they were being taken into hyperspace by the purrgil.

While we haven’t heard any new updates of the Ezra and Thrawn show, we do have an important announcement to share. We are now confident in reporting that Mena Massoud has been cast as Ezra Bridger along with Lars Mikkelsen portraying Grand Admiral Thrawn! This may not be shocking to some fans as Massoud and Mikkelson have been favorites for casting these two popular Star Wars characters.

Ezra

Massoud is a talented actor who rose to stardom portraying the role of Aladdin in the Disney live-action remake. While his popularity grew after the movie the opportunity for new roles did not come as fast as he would of like. It is safe to assume that with this new role Massoud will be busy for the next few years.

A while back Mena posted on Instagram a photo of him shirtless with the caption gaining all of the attention. “Hey, just so you know, when I escape I won’t hurt any of you.” which of course is a reference to a line from Ezra Bridger in Star Wars Rebels. KRT had originally reported that Massoud was the favorite and that talks were ongoing. However, Massoud is now signed on we can confirm.

Thrawn

The news of Lars Mikkelsen coming to the Mandoverse as Grand Admiral Thrawn is welcoming news for fans of Star Wars Rebels. It was Mikkelsen himself that voiced Thrawn in the animated series for seventeen episodes. Thrawn is one of the most unique characters in the Star Wars universe.

He was first introduced in the novel Heir To The Empire in 1991 and quickly rose in popularity which has led to multiple novel trilogies, comic book appearances, and animation. However, he is the only character that has transitioned from the Expanded Universe into Star Wars canon.

What makes this news perfect is the age of both actors would be relatively around the age of their respective characters. I think fans will be happy with these choices, especially that of Mikkelsen, whose voice work has become iconic.

The YouTuber behind that viral deepfake Mandalorian video now officially works for Lucasfilm

The YouTuber known as Shamook who deepfaked Luke Skywalker in The Mandalorian now has a Star Wars job.
By Nick Romano
July 27, 2021 at 11:37 AM EDT

That feeling when your Star Wars deepfakes are so good that Lucasfilm wants to give you a job. That was essentially what happened to the person known online as Shamook.

The YouTuber, known for his popular deepfake videos in which he improves the de-aging CGI in Star Wars projects like Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and The Mandalorian, mentioned in the comments section of one of his videos this month that he was recently recruited by Lucasfilm's Industrial Light and Magic.

"As some of you may already know, I joined ILM/Lucasfilm a few months ago and haven't had the time to work on any new YouTube content," Shamook wrote. "Now I've settled into my job, uploads should start increasing again. They'll still be slow, but hopefully not months apart. Enjoy!"
The studio then confirmed the news in a statement to EW. "[Industrial Light and Magic is] always on the lookout for talented artists and have in fact hired the artist that goes by the online persona 'Shamook,'" a representative for ILM said. "Over the past several years ILM has been investing in both machine learning and A.I. as a means to produce compelling visual effects work and it's been terrific to see momentum building in this space as the technology advances."

De-aged Mark Hamill in 'The Mandalorian' season 2

IndieWire was the first to report the news. Shamook didn't immediately respond to EW's requests for further comment, and details on their specific job responsibilities weren't mentioned, though it's fair to speculate.

Shamook had gone viral in December for posting a new deepfake video that seemed to improve the visuals in The Mandalorian season 2 finale, which brought in a technologically de-aged Mark Hamill to reprise his role of Luke Skywalker. The side-by-side comparisons between the show and Shamook's deepfake in the video, which currently has more than 2.1 million views on YouTube, couldn't be ignored.

Shamrook had already done something similar for Rogue One. The film included de-aged versions of Grand Moff Tarkin (Peter Cushing) and Princess Leia (Carrie Fisher). Again, the work spoke for itself.

This emphasis on "machine learning" and new techniques can be seen elsewhere in Lucasfilm. In the face of the COVID-19 pandemic, showrunner Jon Favreau and ILM utilized StageCraft, which creates CGI environments in real time for the actors to perform in, thanks to a wraparound LED screen. It's something Lucasfilm and ILM will continue to use as they develop multiple live-action Star Wars shows.

As for Shamook, there's nothing fake about this YouTube success story.

If you cats have not been keeping up on what Disney is doing, lots of word going around that Disney is looking and planning on recasting and reshooting Episodes 1 to 6.

It’s looking like they have plans on creating future movies/series based around those movies and need new actors. Everybody from those films are either dead or have aged out of the roles.

My brother works security down in the LA area and was sent to assist in this years San Diego Comic Con and got some definitive word from Disney/Marvel people on the reboots.

Lots of rumors are circulating right now that Sebastian Stan (Winter Soldier) is looking to be cast as Luke Skywalker and Millie Bobby Brown (Stranger Things) as Princess Leia for the Episodes 4 to 6 era.

Keep your ear out.

If Luke joined the dark side, what might his Sith name be?

Hmm, Sith names usually have a meaning behind them.

Examples:

Darth Sidious:
translates to insidious, it refers to something or someone working or spreading harmfully in a subtle or stealthy manner, which is more than fitting for Palpatine.

Darth Bane: translates to being a source of ruin and destruction hence; he’s the bane of ones existence.

Darth Vader: translates to invader, which refers to a force that invades and attacks something in order to take control, it's especially fitting how he was tasked to lead the great invasion of the Jedi Temple.

Darth Tyranus: translates to tyrant, which refers to an oppressive, harsh, arbitrary person.

Darth Maul: translates to injure or viciously attack in order to cause severe harm.

Darth Plagueis: translates to the word plague, which means widespread affliction or calamity, especially one seen as divine retribution.

Darth Revan translates to revenant, which refers of one that returns after death or a long absence.

Darth Nihilus: translates to the Latin word “Nihil”, which means "nothing" or "nothingness"; hence nihilists, who do not believe in anything and deny existence.

Darth Caedus: derives from the Latin meaning, caedo, caedere, cecidi, casurus, which is a Latin verb and means, "to kill/to cut/to sacrifice."

So yeah, it honestly depends of what you want Luke to represent as a Sith. Now, my personal favorite would be "Darth Natus", which is Latin and translates to the word "son" and “destinted”; hence the destined son of the great Jedi invader.
