Tennis star Naomi Osaka faces being thrown out of the French Open if she continues to avoid speaking to journalists at media briefings.

The world number two skipped the news conference following her first-round victory at Roland Garros on Sunday, and was fined $15,000 (£10,500) for doing so.

Osaka revealed on Wednesday that she would not be meeting the press in Paris because of mental health concerns.

She was not "going to subject" herself to "people that doubt me", the 23-year-old tweeted.

Explaining her reasoning, the Japanese player said she had watched "many clips of athletes breaking down after a loss in the press room".

"I believe that whole situation is kicking a person while they are down," the four-time grand slam winner said.

In a statement on Sunday, the board of grand slam tennis tournaments said it had asked Osaka to reconsider and had tried unsuccessfully to speak to her in the hope of finding a resolution.

It added that players' mental health is "of the utmost importance to the grand slams".

But it continued: "A core element of the grand slam regulations is the responsibility of the players to engage with the media, whatever the result of their match."

Unlike team sports you will have a coach or the team captain they may even rotate players to hold interviews after a win or lost. Tennis it will always be the player and it can be exhausting constantly answering the same questions after every match. And sometimes those questions are personnel and not professional when they are top ranked female players. Remember when a reporter told Serena Williams she should smile more...

50/50 on this one.. One may say who are you to criticize my tennis game and haven’t never played on this level. Like taking advice from a homeless man on buying a house.

Other side it’s this new generation, my nephew and daughter are build different. They don’t even get mad when they lose. Extra sensitive to constructive criticism like someone posted earlier Beast Mode was build different at the press. Was eating skittles lmao!!

Funny how black men are constantly calling other people coons and weak for NOT asserting themselves here you have sista who hasn't shied away from using her platform to address black american issues. And when she stands up for herself you all call her WEAK.

Bgol really hates black women :smh: :smh: :smh:

Man I just had to have this conversation with my son. He’s so sensitive and I don’t always know the right way to handle it. My dad would criticize me and I would use it as way to get better. My son sees as your being too critical and I can’t learn like that.

Serena was out there winning while pregnant and never once shook at post game interviews when in her prime

They just don't build them like they use to.

It's complicated

I think she has a responsibility to tennis, fellow players, the tournament. Sponsors and the media outlets who pay for rights to be available

It's part of the job

However I do not know how these same reporters have been treating Osaka during these post-game interviews

Also if she willing to pay the fines?

Then that's OK too.

But the ONE thing I would tell her is this

Venus, Serena, and most importantly Althea Gibson went thru utter hell for her to have these opportunities

Out of respect for them use this platform wisely

Again if mentally emotionally she can't

if they being disrespectful?

Now that's different.

But as long as she is willing to suffer the penalties?

I got no issues
