NEW YORK -- — Dennis Schroder helped send a Lakers team missing LeBron James and Anthony Davis off to a sizzling start.
And after Schroder was thrown out along with Kyrie Irving in the third quarter, the defending champions really turned it on.
Andre Drummond had 20 points and 11 rebounds, Schroder scored 19 points before he and Irving were ejected and the Lakers beat the Brooklyn Nets 126-101 on Saturday night.
“Today we were out here competing, making shots and, yeah, that’s the best win of the year I would say,” Schroder said.
A nationally televised matchup already missing plenty of star power lost even more when Irving started jawing with Schroder and neither player stopped quickly enough for the officials.
The Lakers had led most of the way and were ahead 66-62 when Irving fouled Schroder with 9:41 left in the third. Los Angeles blew it open soon after the ejections with a 15-2 burst to open an 88-71 lead.
A potential NBA Finals preview had a preseason feel with so many top names unavailable. James (right ankle sprain) and Davis (right calf strain) remain out for the Lakers, while James Harden is sidelined with a strained right hamstring for the Nets.
The Lakers handled being short-handed much better, putting eight players in double figures. Ben McLemore, in his second game with Los Angeles, scored 17.
“I learned a lot from today’s game, that we have a lot of guys in this locker room that are very tough,” Drummond said. “Despite who’s on the other side of the court, they’re going to come out and play.”
Kevin Durant scored 22 points in his second game back following a 23-game absence with his own hamstring injury. Irving added 18, but the Nets had their nine-game home winning streak snapped.
Besides James and Davis, who were sitting on the bench, the Lakers were also without Kyle Kuzma (left calf strain), Marc Gasol (left hamstring tightness) and Wesley Matthews (right Achilles tendon tightness).
“I thought they were the aggressor, they were more physical, they hit first and we didn’t match their physicality and competitive fire, and that’s what you get,” Nets coach Steve Nash said. “A team missing a bunch of guys and guys get an opportunity and their eyes light up and they come out and play harder than us, play more physical than us.
"And it’s a great lesson for us.”
The Lakers have fallen to fifth in the Western Conference during James’ 11-game absence, while the Nets entered play leading the East. Both teams have upgraded from the buyout market in hopes of deep playoff runs, with the Lakers adding Drummond and Brooklyn signing LaMarcus Aldridge and Blake Griffin.
The defending champions' defense sure looked playoff ready, holding the NBA's highest-scoring team 18 points below its season average. And they showed off some postseason physicality, with Markieff Morris getting a flagrant foul in the first half for elbowing Irving.
The Lakers also had their offense rolling early, starting 7 for 8 to build an 18-7 lead. Schroder made his first six shots for 16 points.
“They hit us in the mouth early and then we were fighting uphill all game,” Durant said.
The Nets bounced back by shooting 63% in the second quarter, cutting it to 61-58 at halftime.

Vogel said Gasol's hamstring problem started after he had to play extended minutes against Toronto on Wednesday after Montrezl Harrell was ejected after 2 1/2 minutes. Kuzma had also been carrying a heavier load lately with James and Davis out.
“We feel like those guys have been given minutes that they can reasonably play, but we’ve had a couple of flareups,” Vogel said. “It’s part of asking guys to play bigger roles than they’re used to.”

Lonzo shooting like 40% on catch and shoot 3s this year and most of those are coming out of the sets where Zion is running the offense because the defense is sagging because he’s going to driveNah. He's butchering this shit so badly he's definitely done after this. Having Zion run point makes Lonzo completely useless out there. He literally looks lost standing at the corner 3 point line. We see it. But fuckin Stan doesn't.
Yeah I don’t know why they’re running handoffs with Adams at the 3 point line. I haven’t watched the flow of the offense in those sets enough but it doesn’t seem like the smart thing to do
That's where stats can be misleading. Lonzo is not a 3 point specialist and that should never be his job. Had Doc Rivers not completely fuck up the defensive assignments in that game and put Simmons on Zion it would have completely exposed that bullshit. Even without Zo in the lineup.
That shit pissed me the fuck of what Doc did allowing that muthafucka to bring the ball up court without pressure like that.

Zo is shooting close to 40% because of the work he has put in. Zion at PG is terrible because it forces 2 players to play opposite of their strengths. It slows the pace, removes 1 of your best rebounder, puts the ball in the hands of your worst decision maker, create turnovers, Zion poses zero perimeter threat, and it wears Zion down. This is basketball 101 shit.
Aldridge definitely can't handle Drummund, that shit was a total mismatch, This was bound to happen sooner or later, The Nets need either Kyrie or Harden on the floor to at least have a chance of beating Lakers, as good as Durant Is, It's obvious he's no floor general. Nets had way to many Turnovers.

He’s shooting 40% partly because of the work he’s put in to improve his jumper but also because the set puts him in a position to capitalize on that work and take wide open jumpers. The action forces the defense to sag and because he’s not a deadly shooter the ball rotates and boom he’s knocking them down.
I do agree with you about Zion though.

I think one thing is that players have been following Lebron and think they maintain more control of their career. Lebron makes crazy off court money, so you can't compare yourself to him.
I think after Harden, players need to rethink things and realize they will always have the power to get with a new team
In the LeBron era all skilled wings and bigs are expected to be playmakers and ball handlers. And we see time after time them not being able to handle it. Kawhi struggled last year tryna be a facilitator, and KD has always been a shoot first guy. The Pelicans have Zion even playing PG now at points of the game.
All the Bron effect.KD doesnt make players around him better at all, he doesnt get scrubs to overachieve. He's not a leader, just a talent. Thats why ever since he left OKC he only plays on all-star laden teams with other guys who've already won. They were 7-6 before the Harden trade and were struggling when it was just him and Kyrie. They were gonna fail as a duo. Harden's playmaking ability has been the difference for the Nets this season.
Zion is at PG like Giannis
because the big muthafucka doesn't shoot from the outside, Giannis tries at least. He's easier to defend when he's not going downhill.
