Discussion: FARGO on FX @10pm Update: Season 5 w/ John Hamm

I felt this season was blah. I had it on in the background while I was doing stuff. The only character I kinda cared about was Doctor Senator. I'm expecting season 1 & 2 quality but this fell flat.
The Italians seemed like cornballs. The crazy nurse was just annoying. Chris Rock just didn't do the bad guy thing like Bokeem or Billy Bob did it. Could have just made the funeral home couple black.

damn.... OK let's go in.

I CANNOT really dispute anything you wrote.

I am a fan of Fargo the original movie everything Cohen so I am biased but...

I had issues with the whole season.

It had some HIGH marks VERY HIGH and a whole lot of LOWS

Chris Rock.

Took me too long to FINALLY accept him in the role. He had some STAND OUT MOMENTS. but not enough. I was impressed how he shined with OTHER actors, I think that is why we all loved Doctor Senator so much. He HELPED Chris the actor find his footing You dealing with a GREAT actor. His death with tough I understand story wise it HAD to be done. But I think I would have rather have him be incapacitated and Rock regularly seeking aid at his sick bed or even have Doctor Senator haunt him, or just flashbacks that Chris had to go to for direction.

OK now the Italians..

You are right.

those 2 are great actors and they are EXACTLY the faces and types you would expect the Cohen to cast

but it didn't work

Josto was such an unbelievable little weasel the family following him at ANY point was just ridiculous

and his googly eyed brother just chewed up WAY too much of the screen you can't be on 11 EVERY SCENE bro

I get it, your crazy OK

The nurse.

She was VERY good in small doses she had this crazy sexy dangerous thing but she did NOT need so much screen time

They could have the SAME impact the same beats the same climax and resolution with HALF the screen time.

NOT enough Ethrlrida.

PERFECT Mike Milligan and I think JUST because of that I can't hate on the season

They WASTED so many characters and story-lines.

And usually they don't do that.

there was too much BETTER material that was NOT addressed.

Why did they REALLY start swapping sons? Why was there no REAL penalty? Why keep doing it after the betrayal? One son got molested and that was never addressed?

How would Mike KNOW that line about people faking being nice if his father died when he was so young? Why didn't YOUNG Mike call for help?

Why didn't NY get MORE involved?

How NY just allow Loy to be cut off like that?

the ghosts? WTF was all THAT about?

The whole a DEAL is a DEAL thing seemed so arbitrary? So no loyalty between thieves but then there WAS? Confusing.

Marshall of course is great and always welcome.

Just a whole lot of abandoned plots ...unnecessary.

yet despite ALL that?

I enjoyed the season, thought Chris Rock found his rhythm in the end and that the cast was amazing

sidebar..

EVERY SINGLE BLACK ACTOR DESERVED MORE SCREEN TIME.

they were KILLING it.

Glad I got to binge this shit. It was an OK season. Still like season 1 and the one with Bokeem the best. Crazy that the little boy was his character.

At the start of the season when Rabbi Milligan was introduced ... and I saw Satchel (and their connection) ... I immediately thought ...

Season 4 = 1950
Season 2 = late-70s
Satchel = approx' 10 - 12yo or so
Mike Milligan = probably late-30s or early-40s age-wise ...

These timelines seem to add up

@playahaitian & everyone

Checked out the finale. Enjoyed the music selections - Johnny Cash, Tom Waits, Nick Cave, etc.

That opening montage with many of the people that lost their lives

Damn - Dr. Harvard couldn't catch a break. Survives the poisoning and coma, and gets taken out sitting next to Josto's pretend/faux future father-in-law

Good to see Josto & Nurse Mayflower meet their end that way (at the hands of Joe Bulo - Brad Garrity's character from the 2nd season, right?)

That was cold how she asked the shooter to blast him first so she could see

You're right about the confusion / too many characters. That was the gripe from the podcasters throughout the season. It's too tough to follow all the characters' story arcs. You want more time spent on select characters

It was good to see Chris Rock find his footing as Loy Cannon. Heartbreaking that scene at the end with the oranges on the porch watching his family in the living room & everything seemingly ok again in the world. Only to have Zelmare show up seeking revenge for Swanee

Yes - people were definitely mixed about Gaetano. As you noted - he was on 11 with his scenes. He would have been more menacing had he toned it down. Especially given his size and presence compared to his weasel brother Josto and other crew members

That scene was cold with Leon getting set up by Cannon and the always-loyal Opal Rackley intercepting him

Hoped to see more of old man Ebal Violante this season. Solid scenes with him and Josto / Cannon respectively. Enjoyed those diner scenes earlier in the season with Doctor Senator too ... good actor (especially with Senator as a great scene partner)

Regarding Cannon with the oranges at the end ...

It’s a well-known fact that oranges represent mortal danger in The Godfather world. Vito Corleone buys oranges just before he is ambushed, and a cascade of oranges spills onto the sidewalk as he is shot. At the end of the first film, he cuts up an orange minutes before his death. Sonny Corleone passes a large billboard advertising orange juice just before being gunned down at a tollbooth. Every scene showing a mafia conference has oranges in it somewhere. Every mafia figure is shown handling an orange at some point — usually just before a violent scene. And at the end of it all, in the last scene of the last Godfather movie, Michael Corleone drops an orange at the moment of death. None of this is a revelation.

Yeah, I agree on the sons thing. To me, the season just started weird with that shit. It's something I expect out an ancient show or something from the middle ages, never seen a gangster story with son swaps.

And Doctor Senator's death was fucking stupid. He basically committed suicide for nothing. He deserved to be ambushed or a brute force attack, not arrogantly walking out to get shot in the street. Walk out like you got some fucking sense and the cat might bust your ass. WTF?

Ghosts just in and out. That's not new with Fargo because they had the fucking UFO and probably other shit I forgot about.

Wow you REALLY aint like this season fam.

Just after the 22-second mark. Apparently it’s footage from near the end of the 2nd season from a different angle - layered with Satchel.

Appreciate you fam.

Really if they don't go back and just wrap up Mike Milligan story

Perfect trilogy

They just wasted everything

Its not just fan service the story DESERVES IT.

I love artists and being different challenging unpredictable

But then there is just self sabotage

There were too many characters and i mean that in EVERY SENSE

It cluttered the story added nothing wasted talent robbed other actors if screen time hurt the final product.

They ABANDONED WHOLE PLOT LINES FOR NO REASON FOR LAME PREDICTABLE ONES

We aint need that much Josto

There was no revelation no depth no twist no surprise

He lived and died the same damn weasel

I liked the nurse but what we LEARN?

Why have damn near 4 episodes dedicated almost solely to them?

Agreed. That would be incredible if they ever did that. I’m sure they see all the pro Milligan talk online over the years. He’s a beloved character. Everyone loves a great bad guy like him, Hanzee, Malvo, VM Varga, etc. Plus it would be a great spotlight for more Woodbine to showcase his acting.

Yes - with all the characters it was tough to keep track. Or the references to season 2 which aired 5-6 years ago, but was set nearly 30 years later. Many casual fans may have missed out on plot points that forum threads were discussing,

Definitely going to rewatch season
2 in the new year. I need a refresher. Plus, it was just a great season all around. Almost forgot about Plemons, Dunst, Danson, Culkin too.

Do not get me wrong that is cohen brothers signature style

I love the universe building and intermingling

And one or two mysteries dropped plot points cool love it.

But this one it was kinda glaring

It was too much to put Chris a relative newbie with those heavy hitters and the character actors and directors were more focused on making faces and physical tics and scene chewing than character development.

The nurse worked more on her limp than making us see what the hell was going on in her insane head

Bulging googly eyes is not some big character choice

The hitman was just a scarecrow wicked witch with a gun

Come on!!!

I wanted to know more about the funeral home owner and him marrying a black women back then?

Was he REALLY ethelrita father?

More about the son swab?

Why was the honor code so inconsistent?

Nothing big but it could have been big you know?

And all that being said, i really enjoyed it.

Agree with a lot of comments on the season. Especially the casting of Schwartzman as Boss of the family was never believable for a second.

I really thought the nurse chick would get her fate differently. Would have been nice to get more of her backstory since she was the primarly link to Fargo

Chris Rock was perfect as the more than capable Black man frustrated by the boundaries enforced on him. The only part I had to question was him beating anyone up lol.

The whole Italian mob didn't make much sense other than to introduce colorful characters. New York was the McGuffin for everything they did. Got old after a while.

Good points. I was hoping for longer episodes too, and covid not having delayed production and release. Watching Goliath and Peaky Blinders now. They have shorter seasons, but longer episodes at 50-60 minutes.

Good points you made re: Mayflower, Calamita, Smutny family, Gaetano, etc. Extend the episode running times and focus on specific people like they did with Rabbi-Satchel in
East/West Oz inspired a few weeks back.

Good point. I think it was effective in that the majority of people doubted him. Prone to outbursts and small in stature. Not a real tough guy. Compared to the more menacing brother Gaetano. I liked when Ebal questioned and doubted him at the end re: his dad and brother’s fates.

EXACTLY!!!!!

Smutny family was under developed but they PROMISED by the way the first episode opened we would get more.

Man, maybe because I waited all the way until the end to binge. I had hyped it up so much in my mind that I don't think it was possible to live up to it. I'm new to Fargo and fresh of the other seasons. Like I said, 2 of those 3 seasons are just hard to pass.

Just wait until I watch the Mandolorian(sp). I got season 2 so hyped in my head it better be worth me waiting to binge.

Yeah but he didn't SELL that

He was the same to EVERYONE even the nurse

No layers hidden softness nothing

So even the bond with the brother was just OK.

It’s definitely that suspension of disbelief as a viewer. Knowing full well he isn’t crushing a grape in real life or on camera. His crew could easily off him. Same for Billy Bob as Lorne Malvo. Small, slightly built guy who is menacing. It’s fun watching him on Goliath too. He ain’t scaring nobody, but talks tough when he needs to get his voice heard.

Damn, I wish we had more Doctor Senator and Ebal Violante this past season.

True. It would have been good seeing more on the parents. That scene with Smutny and Loy Cannon was great with the money. The scene with Mrs. Cannon and Mrs. Smutny. More on the Smutny family and marriage, as you noted.

EXACTLY...

and look how WELL those scenes played

great moments great acting great character development and backstory

and there was a OBVIOUS NATURAL CONNECTION

the wives the funeral home and DEATH and connection between ALL the mobs

across the street from the nurse (the UNNATURAL agent of death)

play with THAT.

Loved how one podcast recapper noted early in the season.

“Contrasting good (Ethelrida) with evil (nurse Mayflower).”

NO fam don't do that to save Justo

Malvo was EVIL... a man possessed

he had that PRESENCE on screen and he USED the fact that he looked NOT MENACING to make him MORE menacing

Jason was playing Jason.

that odd weasley insecure quick to pop...

He SHOULD have played it not that he was TRYING to act like a tough guy

but more like Loki (which is what I THINK he was trying to do)

BE A COWARD BE A LITTLE WEASEL own it, let everyone seem to push you around the whole time

the government official Ebal your brother your fiancee even the nurse

and THEN when he flipped the script to Loy and tried to get him to KILL his brother?

it would have been CRAZY

imagine how the scene when he is denying the nurse would have played if THE AUDIENCE realized he DID play her to kill not only his father but the hospital chief who refused to save his father life

that he NEVER loved the brother and PLAYED him the whole time

that he was the puppet master and THEM Ebal showed HE was smarter

THAT is an EARNED ENDING.

^^^

that is why they could have PLAYED MORE with the ghost thing!

maybe DEATH did NOT like someone messing with the natural order?

working in a funeral home Ethelrida KNEW Death so did her FAMILY (her aunt?)

she wasn't afraid of it, the spirit wasn't EVIL or GOOD

it just WAS

there are RULES

and the Nurse was not a part of the ORDER of things.

just my spin

I understand, hoestly, I am from the camp that believes ALL shows can;t be binged to be appreciated.

thats just me.

FARGO is a hard binge

unless yo already a Cohen brother fan

now Mandalorian is REAL fam.

aint no over hype, you either down or you not.

If you Star Wars for REAL?

You in

from the first trilogy to comics to cartoons?

Its ALL there.

So there is no REAL way to criticize it, besides real nitpicky sh*t

Its a weekly space western like in the 60s and 70s modernized and in the Star Wars universe.

in the best way possible

I'm a huge star wars fan, that's why I'm waiting. Last season, waiting for an episode week after fucking week was pure torture. I refuse to go back to that ancient delivery system. I just wait until the end and binge.

I liked Fargo so much I actually watched season 1 twice and then did the same for Woodbine's season. With this season, I already deleted it. :smh: Binging westworld right now and that makes me feel like I'm slow as fuck. Ain't no multitasking through that shit.

I STILL aint on Westworld yet...

I'm bingeing Pennyworth.

VERY VERY pleasant surprise

Good points re: natural order / order of things.

Definitely an interesting existence for Ethelrida with her parents owning a funeral home.

Speaking of funeral homes ... I still need to get around to catching up on a good portion of Six Feet Under. I caught the 1st and last seasons, and bits and pieces of the middle seasons (2 - 5?) - didn't have HBO until recent years, so would catch that show and others when they would air on Showcase in Canada. I was able to pick up a few season box sets for shows in Olympia last year, including seasons 1 - 3 of Six Feet Under. One of those big bookstores that also has a huge music & DVD/blu-ray section. The box sets were all fully sealed and new - $5.

Season 5, Playa. You've gotta help Hawley and company write that shit!

Tell him you've got a full Woodbine / Milligan story to tell, and how he should have done this recent 4th season.

:cheers::thumbsup:

LOVED Six Feet

it went off the rails a little in the end...

but it is WORTH it for the resolution of the entire series and there is some acting on there...

real talk some of the BEST in ALL of HBO

and that is saying something.

I would DEFINITELY rewatch that, let me know if you starting a rewatch thread.
