Gas vs Electric Lawn Mowers: is there any difference?

Recently moved away from a community where lawn care was included. Thus, I've got to handle it myself. Does anyone keep their gas mower in their garage? If so, any issues? The alternative would be to simply buy an electric one, but I've always heard gas mowers are superior.

Any thoughts on best approach? Store the gas mower in the garage or just cop an electric one and call it a day?
 
Both work fine. Gas is preferable for a larger yard. Used electric for many years all the same. Smaller lawnmowing & landscaping as a teen and in early-20s. The key to any machine is the wear & tear. Upkeep with it, not forcing it through higher grass or rougher yard terrain. Maintaining the blade, etc. Ensuring it is clean and dry when stored away for fall & winter months.
 
I prefer gas simply because they're what I've always used and feel comfortable with. It does appear that electric models are getting better and better so in the coming years electric mowers may supplant gas models as batteries become more efficient and pollution regulations get stiffer.

Unless you got a small azz front and back yard. And sharpin ur blades. What you should be donin is aerating and overseeding and putting compose down.
But I'm on 2/3rd of an acre. Self propelled....

I bought an Ego trimmer and blower this year. I like them but they can feel underpowered sometimes. I think it depends on how often you cut the grass. I was out of town and missed a couple of weeks, that’s when you notice it’s underpowered. My feet were bothering me this year so I wasn’t on top of it like I should have been. If you’re the type who never misses a cut, it probably has enough power. They’re much quieter.
 
I keep my gas mower in the garage, no issues.

My brother and neighbor have electric. Just have to keep up with cutting because battery runtime and power will suffer considerably if it has to deal with wet or tall grass.
 
Get a gas mower. Stay away from the ones that requires a gas oil mixture.

Make sure it has a briggs and Stratton Motor

Make sure that shit is self propelled

And it says easy start.

Keep a bottle of gas/fuel treatment on deck cause condensation will build up in the tank.

My shed and garage got full so I was forced to keep my shit outside. Been outside for bout 2-3yrs and always starts within 1-3 pulls.

Oh and stay away from craftsman

That Troy-bilt and the Toro I have now are trash for mulching and bagging on the thicker areas of my lawn. My other neighbor let me borrow his Honda mower with the dual blades and it cut with no problem

I agreed with everything else you said, except this. Briggs are decent inexpensive, and long lasting, but they aren't as powerful per volume as kholer and honda ohv models. They aren't a bad choice, but there are better.
 
electric is lighter
gas is heavier so if you have that rough shit,uneven hilly backwoods type of lawn use this

I got both and i use the gas cause it chops down anything in its way....I ain't got time

Been gradually switching over to electric..... sick of the gas shit occasionally not starting and having to buy gas

I decided on the electric. I can't risk having gas in the garage and a shed will require HOA approval. Wifey is extra paranoid about fumes and basically anything that's tied to health concerns.

Will follow up on the results.
 
I was one of those who thought there is no way electric can be as good as gas. The Ryobi rep was at Home Depot one day and we got to talking. He let me try the Ryobi 20 inch 40V. Anyone who says it doesn't work as good as gas is lying. I bought the blower and the weed eater/ edger exchange pack. Best thing I could have ever did.

However there are some cons.
  • If you plan to bag your grass, it sucks for you because of the automatic mechanism, it will cut off when its full, but it doesn't get all the way full.
  • If you have a large yard, you will need more batteries. There are not cheap. And you have to remember to charge them after use. I cant tell you how many times I have come out to cut the grass and remembered I forgot to charge tge batteries from the last time. They take over an hour to fully charge.
  • If you have a problem with the equipment, you can't fix it yourself or take it to the neighborhood repairman. You have to find an official repair shop or try to exchange it from where you bought it.
Despite that, I still like it. My oldest son turns 9 tomorrow. I have been teaching him how to mow the yard. You feel kinda safer. Plus, it's push button, so you don't have worry about him not being able to start the mower.

Lastly, it's waaaaaaaaaaaay quieter and almost zero vibration. I can cut the yard right at dawn with no complaints from the neighbors.
 
I dunno. Got a neighbor across the street with an electric. Typical new build hood, no big hills. Bouy 1/3 of an acre... Brother be out there struggling. Don't know what kind it is. But he'll be out before me and out after I'm done. Unless you're an environmental person... I dont get the appeal.

I'm a Honda guy in general. 4 years and no issues. Starts right up and does the job.
