HBO: Insecure -- Season 5 Official Discussion Thread (Final Season)

Yeah, this show has jumped the shark for me. The drama vomit is too much.

I wasn't feeling Lawrence coming back at all. They showed him living his best life. Now.... just unnecessary drama added for the sake of "Ooo, giiiiirl" reaction.

Molly and Issa's friendship dynamic change was enough to hold the show. They also had Molly's struggles with her overreactions/attitude and her relationships. They even have Amanda Seale's character struggling with PPD to work with.

This was simply unnecessary.

I may be done with the show for good.

Maybe she wanted it, because of her age and financial stability

If that's the case, given her age and finacial stability she would have planned everything out if she wanted a co-parenting situation without a relationship.

Lawrence giving her that look and asking if she wanted to keep it was not the reaction she wanted.

I don't look at this as reality

I thought his reaction was fucked up...and a stereotype. Something a woman would write for a black man to say.

I gave up before season 2 ended.

Saw this shit coming a mile away.

You called it!

Yeah Amanda's character's issues were pointless, especially for the last episode of the season. We're not that interested or care about here that much. I was thinking a guy was in the hotel room with her, I guess I was wrong.

Muthafucka's don't even want to share a car payment when they break up, they damn sure don't wanna share a baby!

This! and then he took it bad as hell....

I don't look at this as reality

I thought his reaction was fucked up...and a stereotype. Something a woman would write for a black man to say.

How was he supposed to take it?

They're broken up! Now she drags her ass back weeks later talking about she's pregnant? He has no kids and was moving for a new job and looking to move things forward with Issa.

Of Course he's gonna be mad as fuck that she turned up pregnant!

Saw this post on Lipstick Alley, Posting it for your opinions

Feel free to disagree, but after this episode, I just know Issa and Lawrence are not end-game, which makes me sad bc I love them. They’re not going to work for multiple reasons: Issa cheated & with Lawrence asking about Daniel during dinner, it shows that he hasn’t quite gotten over it. Issa was the come-up woman, whereas Condola is his trophy woman. Lawrence needed that closure and got it once he and Issa fucked. He’ll keep texting her bc Issa is free, familiar pussy, but he’s emotionally? He’s done with her.

To make matters worse, he kept playing around and joking the entire episode. I understand that they have that camaraderie as exes, but I feel like a man who is serious about locking you down and marrying you would have some more maturity in his interactions with you. He was mature with Condola. He’s not mature with Issa.
Whoever wrote that is single or divorced. If two people can't be best friends and be themselves around each other then what's the point of going further.

I enjoyed it even if Amanda's story came out of nowhere. Could have had more foreshadowing. This show could use another show just for the side character's stories to be fleshed out more. But they sometimes touch on issues lightly just to say that they did it. For example Nathan and mental illness.
But the pregnancy thing is real life. Just when shit is getting good it sucker punches you. And there isn't one person who plans so much they are immune to a pregnancy. It only takes one heat of the moment slip up. My son is 6 and I STILL remember the day he was conceived. The stars just aligned to create him.

If you go back throughout the season, you will see some of the signs of Amanda's depression. The baby shower episode and couple of others you will see how disinterested she was a lot of time when it came to the baby. In fact, during the baby shower, the baby was crying and she was like dude got it.

Wow...Issa just can't win. And Molly...I couldn't put up with a chick like that.

Also, who else thought Amanda Seales character had someone else in the hotel room?
LOL, I was waiting for some other nigga to come to the door.
That's how that shit always plays out in every other TV/movie.
That whole storyline was kinda weak.

True dat. Now I gotta rewatch and look for it more.

I thought a guy was going to come to the door too. Funny thing is I thought they had the best relationship. I'm glad they showed them having issues too. Dude really loves her to go though all of that to find her.

I mean she just got out of the shower talking about "I'm sorry", I expected a dude to walk out too.

Amanda Seales is pretty much playing herself as a character on the show. I would have left her crazy-ass a long time ago.

I forgot I even talked about this and posted about it

Bomani made me remember

The muthafucka said why to why are you going to keep it.

A intelligent and financial stable black man, said why.

Who the hell would say that.

That was some stereotype shit, because they couldn't have shown him happy or consoling her...they had to show him react fucked up and worried about himself.

I don’t care how successful a man is, most men don’t want to have a child with a woman that they’re not with!

Unless you’re Future!

Of Course he’d say “Why”! He’s broken up and moved on and looking forward to a relationship with Issa. Why would he want to have a child with a woman he’s physically and emotionally done with?

Even Drake said “Are you sure you wanna keep it”?

Yep, that was clearly written from a woman's perspective projecting her negative feelings about black men.
Because of course, black men never take responsibility for their kids and leave black women to raise them on their own. :rolleyes2:

I have liked the show because, for the most part, they have not played up the negative stereotypes about black men that other shows do.
They also haven't overplayed the "strong, independent, don't need a man" black woman stereotype either.
But it seems like they are starting to do it more and more I guess to appease to the female viewers.
And if that's the route they're going, I might be out on this show.
This season was definitely a drop-off from previous seasons in terms of the the writing.

So you’d be happy if an ex turned up pregnant?

It’s not about taking care of, the moment you found out you’d be happy and ready for the baby shower?

Maybe I’m just different, I didn’t see it as a “Negative Stereotype”. I saw it as a natural reaction from any man. :dunno:

So they fucked up with Amanda. The issue of postpartum depression is a serious one and can be a major storyline. Shit one of my best friends was going through it herself.

BUT...

They were way too subtle with it. Hell you only saw Amanda 2 times through the whole season so how are we supposed to be invested in her when it's out of sight out of mind.

It's a kid yo

His first thought was so are you going to kill it, well why not....

A lot of people raise kids and aren't together

Both are in their 30's without kids.

Whoever wrote that doesn't understand relationships and has never been in one. When you've been together a long time you have a BUNCH of inside jokes you do with each other.

A lot of people do it....doesn't mean they like it. He has absolutely no ties to Condola had the convo where they're definitely done with each other cause she thought of him as a rebound fuck boy and just when shit is going well she says she's pregnant.

Of course he's going to ask if she plans on keeping it cause a LOT of women in that situation wouldn't.

You’re exactly right!

But, that person’s an ex for a reason. Usually you don’t want to have dinner with them, share the same work place as them.

The last thing a man wants to share with an ex is a child, especially if they were broken up when he finds out.

Like I said, maybe it’s just me. :dunno:

There's a big difference in being excited and saying are you going to kill it...well why not

And if you cared that much you should have been wearing condoms

Condola mentioned that she did't need anything from Lawrence and that he didn't have to contribute anything at all.
That to me is perpetuating a stereotype.

In most other TV shows and movies, with a white couple (even exes) in the same situation the man is jumping up and down with joy.
I know that is not the case in real life, but that's how it is usually portrayed in Hollywood.

Women who have their stuff together usually say the same thing as Condola to show that their intention wasn’t to trap the man.
