ESPN writer says young NBA players are depressed being drafted to cities they dont want to live

The season is longer than the offseason and who the fuck wants to spend that much time in cities like Salt Lake City, Cleveland, Detroit, Sacramento, Milwaukee, OKC. 80% of NBA players already live in LA during offseason
You are in your early twenties making 7 figures!! Get over it!!!! Like I said, in only a few years you will have enough money to support you and your family for life.

I get that they are young and might not understand that, but it is what it is.

It's hard for someone that's 21 to understand that someone 40, 50, 60, and even 70 can enjoy life to the fullest. They think after their 20's, it's all over.

To have 6 or 7 figure bank account into your 40's to 70's is a fucking blessing that BILLIONS of people would love to have.

main problem with that is... "what if" players chose where they wanted to go. you'd have over dominating teams in:

LA
New York
Chicago
Miami
Maybe in the beginning. Then 2 things will happen. First, players will start to realize that there's only 1 ball, 48 minutes, and so much playing time to be had, and will go to other teams where they can get some burn. Secondly, players will go to those "undesirable" teams and Voltron up to take down those teams.

Don't declare
Go overseas
Refuse to play
Those are your options

The draft is part of the process
There's only 60 ppl who get to go to a team a year
It shouldn't matter which team it is.

You don't want to live in so and so? Cool rent a condo
Build a house where you want to live in the off-season

Easy as shit to do

When you're a free agent sign with that city

79% of the time dudes go to a place and then it becomes home to them

And then they don't leave or it's hard to leave

If they got to go where they wanted to play then things would get shitty for them real quick
Because sure the top 8 could choose anywhere but the rest is dicey and there's only so many slots

So hey you all want to go to team x and guess what they only taking 2 rookies this year they only have 2 picks

Now where the rest of you going?

You sitting out another year hoping that team x drafts you next year or are you going to try and scramble and find a team....any team in the league that wants you

And by then whos to say they will want you

Now you shit out of luck and talking about how come I'm not on a team?

Cause when the teams had to be uniformed and select from this pool which you were a part of you had a team to go to and a place to go

But now?

And Young Soccer phenoms are in their early 20s making 8 figures getting their choice of playing in world class international cities so why shouldn't these young basketball players get the same choice?

What's the alternative?

Its not like you can base every team in five-six cities so that everyone can live were they want.

Essentially the players they're referring to want to play/live in LA, NYC, Miami, and maybe Houston, Chicago, and one or two other possibles.

That shit is unrealistic and based simply on the fact that in order for these leagues to function and generate the income necessary to pay their million dollar salaries they will have to have teams based in smaller, less desirable areas to someone out of college.

I'd they feel that way they can play for a few years and build their self up enough to be pursued and paid by the teams they wish.

I don't have a magic bullet type answer. But I assume they'd have to do what companies do in real life. Entice them with bigger signing bonuses, more perks. With TV deals and cities basically building them arenas with little investment from the team... I doubt theyre losing money, even in small markets. I mean aside from San Antonio, small market teams don't win shit as is. A 3-5 year rental early on doesn't produce chips either. Bron being from Cleveland is the only reason they got one.

I get what you're saying, but forcing people to play for teams because no one wants to play there... Is against everything people in America say they want. Socialism is a trigger word here, but that's exactly what these private leagues are. Sports leagues are always trying to break players in work stoppages, so why should their viability take paramount over the players wants??? They're the product... We're all against the large corporations, except when it comes to sports. I don't get it.

Like Da Don pointed out, they would go to the popular cities. Then ya'll would be complaining about that.
Maybe in the beginning. Then 2 things will happen. First, players will start to realize that there's only 1 ball, 48 minutes, and so much playing time to be had, and will go to other teams where they can get some burn. Secondly, players will go to those "undesirable" teams and Voltron up to take down those teams.
...but you have to govern some of that because that would happen in waves. You have to try to keep things fair throughout the seasons.

And like I said there's 15 roster spots 30 ppl can play for the l.a team.
This year the Lakers and clippers don't have a designated slot for rookies
So how would anyone in this draft be able to sign with an l.a. team. They wouldn't

Ok and now what?

Now that they can't sign you
Where you going?

Better hurry and scramble and find another team before their slot gets filled

I think we're looking at it differently.

For me they're choosing to play in a league owned and operated by a group of individuals who decide how their business is ran which they're transparent about.

Any player wishing to be employed by this company agrees to their terms and are then paid at minimum six figure salaries so they absolutely have choice and free will when deciding if they are willing to agree.

Its no different than any of us and the situations many may encounter in the work place.

For example if my employer gives me an office which is smaller or without windows or assigns me to an office location I hate no ones going to talk about how they shouldn't be allowed to do that and demand I be assigned a bigger office with windows, a view and in the downtown area so that I don't become depressed.

Most of this is bullshit only about 10% care where they live and play.... The majority of the players are just collecting checks...

Jae Crowder just got traded today to his 5th team in 7 years.... Dude just happy to get a check... He's hoping he can just get another contract...

I get it... If I worked my ass off to be among the top % of my graduating class, and I got drafted to work in a city, for a corporation I didnt want... Id be pissed too. I honestly dont care enough to be mad about it because Im not in their position, but for the sake of conversation. Aside from "Its sports and its just how its done..." Why are people cool with this???
cause if you want to join their organization, they can put you in any city they wish. you can say no and not play at all. you can relocated after your first contract.

with the money made, you can live anywhere. just get an apt or condo where you work.

the draft is bullshit

top prospects should have their choice of where they want to work

But wouldn't that create "super" teams bec everyone would wanna go to the best teams? Even if they allowed the top players to go where they wanted and put the bottom half wherever they wanted to send them it would more than likely still create super teams IMO.

I've never been a player so I'm on the outside but couldn't they just prove they can operate successfully on the next level and bounce after they fulfill the contract? :dunno:

Like said before, you can have a condo anywhere in the world. There are only so many open slots in the league year to year. You better secure yours. If not, get a job a enterprise car rental at LAX.

That's how I see it too. It's kind of done like this for that reason. If they could find a way around majority of players wanting to go to the hot media cities, they have it structured like this to spread things out. It's better to have more teams doing box office than just a handful.

You only "live" in these cities for 6 months a year and even then you're constantly on the road.

IMO its better for these young men to live in less populated states so they can actually focus on basketball.

Being a multi-millionaire at 19 in New York or LA... most of these young boys without proper guidance are food

It’s the NBA. It’s already difficult enough to get their in the first place.

Plenty of G-League kats that would love to play for whoever gives them a chance.

In the military you don't get to pick. You can have a "wish list" but there's no guarantee you'll get it.

Suck it up.

No one gets to pick. They hope the place they live has jobs. I live in Medina Ohio. I have a home there, but my job is 40 minutes away in Cleveland. I don't like it, but I deal with it cuz that's who pays me

These young motherfukers today are soft as hell

Many people, many people would trade places with these guys to be a multi millionaire at 19, 20 year old regardless of where they live
I even read awhile ago these players get per diem when on the road, so they don't even actually have to pay for their food
Sorry the average person will not feel sorry for them.
No one is forcing them to do anything
Go to Europe and play if being a 19 year old millionaire in New Orleans is too depressing for you to deal with

Once again, if it's that bad, then the NBA should chop it self down to 20 teams and play a 38 game season like they do in Europe.

NBA doesn't need 30 teams.

what industry would willingly stop their operations if they didn't have to
this will never happen as long as those teams are making money
why do sports fans bring this up?
it will never happen
Why would the nba shut down more than 1/3 of its annual profit
because some 19 year old is depressed about making millions and playing in memphis

The lifestyle still isn't the same even if you're rich if you have to spend the season in a city you don't enjoy, yes you can live where you want in the offseason but the season is longer than the offseason. In soccer, the only reason why Manchester isn't so bad is cause the players jump on a private jet to London within an hr and can be in a world class city. That's why Phoenix isn't that bad since you can get to LA and Vegas via jet really quick, or Philly where you can access NYC, Toronto, Montreal quickly.

If you have money you can live well anywhere. Plus you are a paid gun anyway. It is ridiculous that folks are getting depressed about not being where the cool kids are.
