I don't believe NASA had the tech to make a 400k mile trip through the Van Allen belts, then through the vacuum of space in an alluminum vessel, then to an atmosphereless moon where the temp in sunlight is over 250F, in 1969, if all those things were true in the first place. The story goes that aliens waved off Armstrong and made certain they were not to return:
