The children that were housed as reported back in 2014 were those sent over alone not separated from their parents.
I think it was a pretty standard thing. You were processed and set with a court date. If it was an asylum case, 99 percent of people showed up and went through the legal system. If they weren't asylum cases, people would sometimes skip the date and just be loose in the system. And then lots deported. It wasn't a great system but it wasn't cruel. What Trump did was manufacture a crisis. They closed the ports so that people really don't have the opting of coming in legally and then they made every case into a criminal case. Crossing the border itself is not a crime. However, the Trump administration has made it a crime and they're using ICE and HHS as a means of torturing immigrants as a "deterrent".
Obama was kind of a hardliner too (at first).... but not an immoral one.. but he did it hoping to ensure the GOP he would keep his side of the bargain and they would negotiate on reform. The GOP renigged so during his second term Obama went left with things like DACA etc...
and there was never any separation of families without almost immediate reunification. This GOP shit is sick... but they don't see non-whites as human.
