$$ FINAL Black Panther Box Office NUMBERS ....$700 Mill Domestic $1.346 Bill Worlwide

So tell me something, my 4K TV is coming tomorrow. Is Blu-ray 4K or is there a 4K Blu-ray? And, does my PS4 upscale the Blu-ray to 4K or so I need a PS4 PRO to see 4K?

Oh, and is there going to be a Best Buy or Target Black Panther exclusive Blu-ray?

Curious if y'all know

The PS4/PS4 pro does not play 4k blu-rays. The Xbox one s and Xbox one X does. It probably will upscale to 4k, but upscaled content doesn't look nearly as good as content that's native 4k. 4k blu-rays will be black at the top of the box, regular blu-rays will be blue at the top of the box.

'Black Panther' Box Office Triumph Puts Disney In A Tricky Spot

Walt Disney and Marvel

‘Black Panther’

There aren’t a lot of records left for Black Panther to break at this juncture. It’ll climb further up the inflation-adjusted domestic earners list, with a total over $687 million putting it in 30th place and above the adjusted cumes of The Dark Knight and Thunderball. It will also make its way up the list of leggiest $100m+ openers as it’s currently in 13th place, even though three of the leggier movies (Shrek 2, Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, Revenge of the Sith) opened on a Wednesday or Thursday. The last big question is whether it can make it past the $1.33 billion global total of Star Wars: The Last Jedi to take the ninth-place slot on the global grossers list.

If the film has $1.3 billion worldwide and $667 million domestic, and I’m arguing that it has around $20m left in the domestic tank, then it isn’t that much of a stretch for it to find another $10m overseas even though it made only $5m overseas last weekend. It’s going to be awfully close one way or another. But here’s the question: Does Walt Disney want Black Panther to pass the unadjusted global cume of Star Wars: The Last Jedi? Walt Disney is in a strange place right now, where the overperformance of the MCU stand-alone flick puts potentially undue pressure on the rest of their biggies. Does Black Panther’s overperformance create unrealistic expectations for Infinity War and Solo: A Star Wars Story?

While few pundits expect Avengers: Infinity War to outgross Black Panther in North America, there is the presumption that the MCU team-up flick will make up for it overseas for a global total at least on par with Black Panther. This now creates a much higher bar to clear whereby Infinity War almost has to look at $1.3 billion as the bar for success. On its face, especially if it’s good, an Infinity War that makes $999 million isn’t exactly a disaster. Yet consider how much handwringing we got three years ago when Age of Ultron “only” made $459m domestic and $1.4b worldwide. There would have been a lot less pressure on Infinity War had Black Panther grossed Spider-Man: Homecoming or Thor: Ragnarok-level numbers.

The Star Wars situation is more complicated. In a media cycle where everyone seems to be itching to declare Disney’s Star Wars franchise as being in peril (despite three consecutive $1 billion+ grossers, generally positive reviews and decent audience buzz), it may not be a net positive for Walt Disney (which is a publicly-traded company whose stock price can theoretically be affected by negative media narratives) to have Black Panther topping The Last Jedi in global grosses. However insane this may seem, and Black Panther and The Last Jedi are two of Disney’s best live-action movies since (at least) Pete’s Dragon, the handwringing over the Star Wars franchise because The Last Jedi “only” made $1.33b worldwide won’t be helped by MCU’s underdog superhero triumph passing it in global grosses.

The post-debut media narratives around The Last Jedi only creates more pressure for Solo: A Star Wars Story. Even with the behind-the-scenes melodrama, this May’s prequel should have been viewed as a freebie after two successful “episodes” and the well-received Rogue One surviving post-production hell to come through with solid reviews and a $1 billion+ global gross. The media is still occasionally trying to position the Star Wars franchise as being in some kind of peril because some folks online went all #NotMyStarWars with The Last Jedi and because that sequel wasn’t as big or as leggy as The Force Awakens. This, Solo finds itself as a weird spot where it is both an underdog and has something to prove beyond artistic justification for its existence.

Black Panther making “all the money” isn’t retroactively responsible (financially or morally) for the higher expectations for Avengers: Infinity War or the narrative surrounding Lucasfilm’s Star Wars movies, which itself is partially a result of the skewed conversation concerning The Last Jedi. Moreover, it wouldn’t be the worst thing in the world if Black Panther out-grossed Avengers: Infinity War, Solo: A Star Wars Story (which is, potential quality notwithstanding, a cynical concoction rooted in conventional wisdom about what makes a blockbuster) or even Pixar’s The Incredibles 2 (which, likely quality notwithstanding, is a nostalgia-driven cash-in sequel that also upholds conventional wisdom about what makes a hit movie). This situation isn’t that different from Disney’s Zootopia and The Jungle Book crushing it before summer and thus potentially setting up higher expectations for Marvel’s Captain America: Civil War and Pixar’s Finding Dory.

Now the counterpoint to all of this, presuming that the next three Disney flicks don’t outright crush it worldwide, is that Disney can sell the line that Disney is such a strong tentpole distributor that only a Disney movie can outperform another Disney movie. Save for Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom (or the likes of Skyscraper or Mission: Impossible Fallout catching fire), that may prove true this summer. If Avengers: Infinity War makes “all the money” in two weeks and if Solo: A Star Wars Story earns good reviews and (arguably) Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales-level box office, then this will all be trivia. But this all goes to show that one of Disney’s “problems” right now is that they have almost too many big-scale franchises all kicking butt at the same time.

Although to be fair, Disney’s market share domination allows it to avoid too much scrutiny when the likes of Cars 3 and A Wrinkle in Time outright bomb. We may not see another film earning as much as Black Panther in North America until (maybe) Teen Titans GO to the Movies! Star Wars 9 or Avatar 2. Black Panther’s overwhelming success is both a huge win for Disney (along with civilization in general) and places arguably higher expectations on Infinity War and does leave the Star Wars franchise in a different place. The “bad” news is that T’Challa has put that much more pressure on the rest of his Avenger buddies and may give ammunition to the “Last Jedi ruined Star Wars!” crowd if the Ryan Coogler MCU action drama ends up passing Rian Johnson’s sci-fi sequel. The good news is that, at this level of tentpole filmmaking, Walt Disney’s only real competition may be Walt Disney.

Just look for the 4K... I’ve seen it worded different “4K Blu-Ray”, “Blu-Ray 4K”it might even say UHD or HDR... It’s pretty much all the same when it comes to movies. Just make sure the case says 4k.

On one of those PSN updates a while back they added the feature to the PS4 that when enabled allowes your console to upscale or detect 4K signals. Haven’t actually tried to play a 4K disc yet though.

I’d be interested if anyone knows because when I was getting my 4K setup I was thinking of getting a pro console for that purpose until I read that only the XBox One has a drive that plays 4K movies so I left it alone and just got a 4K player instead.

Also another thing I just got hipped to. Make sure the movie you’re buying on 4K was actually mastered in 4K or you’re getting jipped. Justice League for example was mastered in 2K and upscaled for the 4K release. They’re basically selling a blu-ray at 4K prices.
Thank you for all that information, especially about the 4K Blu-ray and the 4K update to the PS4.

I just called DirecTV to get there 4K upgrade and they told me they had four channels upgraded to 4K... I told them motherfuckers to kick rocks.

I don't know about a 4K player at this point. I'll see. if I see a good one at around$100 I might get it later, but the main reason I got my TV was the size, 75 inches

Absolutely, bro...

Yeah DirecTV is on that bullshit. It's gone be that way for minute until 4K saturates the market a little more. Amazon Prime and Netflix keep adding 4K titles. That's holding me over; even though Netflix is known to have compression issues.

You getting a 75 inch, you'll definitely be able to see the difference between the old HD and UHD. Truth be told on those smaller units like 55 inches an under I don't know that most folks will really notice the difference between a blu-ray that's being upscaled and a 4K, but 75 inches, you'll be able to get that resolution close to theater quality. I got a 65 and anything under 1080P looks like garbage to me now.

When you do decide to get a 4K player, this is the site I use to cross-check what the disc was mastered on: http://realorfake4k.com/

Man, I'm drooling. I took off work early just to try to put this thing up and together. Man, taking apart a system that you've had together for years is a pain in the ass. Taping labels so you know which cord goes where.

Shit, I've got PlayStation 1 2 3 and 4, along with an Xbox 360, and a NES/Genesis/SNES Emulator to go along with DirecTV receiver to disconnect and reposition.

What's good on Amazon Prime? I've got it, but I've never used it even though I got Amazon Prime last year. I don't have Netflix, I just download most of my shows onto my hard drive (it makes it easier when I'm rewinding a funny joke or dialogue I didn't get because Netflix gives you that "I'm thinking about it" ring)

What's good?

Man that looks nice. I'd a took off work too. I know what you mean.

Them Samsungs are nice and they're easy to work with. That voice control smart remote has me spoiled. Make sure when you get your systems hooked up' whatever input you got 'em on is in game mode. I love how low the input lag is on mine -- best I've seen on any TV I've owned. Control is super responsive I took my PS4 out of town with me a month ago, and I couldn't even play it on the tv in my hotel room. My timing was all off. Felt like I was playing in mud.

Might be a couple other cats around here know a little more about prime, but tends to be good for movies. Netflix for TV shows. It's really all what you're into. Prime has a huge selection of movies new and old stuff and they're deep. I haven't even gotten into all of it so much new stuff keeps popping up. They do be bullshitting with those Marvel movies, though. They added the Director's Cut of Troy a while back, I saw Spike Lee's Chi-Raq up there the other day in 4K. They have a lot of Paramount's catalog so there's a couple of Star Trek's up there, shitload of James Bone movies (I recently stumbled onto An Officer and A Gentleman, that took me back) -- and if you're into football that All or Nothing Series -- the first season, especially -- puts to shame anything HBO has done with Hard Knocks.

I have Prime, but mostly use it for orders. They have some good series as far as shows go. But if you have Showbox or Terrarium on your phone, or whatever streaming device you use, you don't need it. But if I had to choose, Netflix>>Prime

what exactly is the point you are attempting to make here?

That for some reason African Americans thought BP was supposed to uplift and change Black society, and it was a ridiculous sentiment.

Ignore him. He's one of those people that expects to be compensated when another black person succeeds.

I like how no one was talking to you, but you decided to come butt in with no clue as to what's even going on. Nice job.

Edit: U know, I'm not even this type of individual. It's a public message board to all those who paid, you are more than welcome to your opinion. I apologize, feel free to say whatever you'd like to my screen name.

OMG this shit is beautiful. I'm watching Avatar and the colors are just...out of this world.

I can't figure out how to connect my receiver and this "one connect" doesn't make sense to me. I need to connect my old receiver to get my surround sound, but OMFG

If anyone can help let me know

Word.

I know the feeling. I just sit and stare at mine sometimes. Don’t even be paying attention to the plot of the movie. You wanna take it to the next level, put it in movie mode and turn the lights out. It’s just like being in a theater.

I connect my receiver with an optical cable on the side of the one connect box.

Sorry man, did not mean to hijack your thread
Back to Black Panther, it does look like it's slowing down. Possibly due to bootlegging. I've been to see it 14 times already so, I'm doing my part. It's funny, a lot of people still haven't seen it. I was just talking to people on Facebook who haven't seen it

If Disney really does intend to make a push for Best Picture I can see a scenario where it gets re-releases on a limited run in a soft period a little later in the year. Happened to both Get Out, and Dunkirk.

ok...so with Saudi Arabia opening coming up we might as well say jedi & harry potter caught ...

domestic run pretty much over ..hopefully domestically we can add another 20 mill...(4 more wks will do it ...might even get that 700 mill )

...but does it get to ultron with the saudi boost ...?

How long it have before they pull it?

that 5 mill this wk looks good ...so if i had to guess maybe another month ...

it`s still doing numbers...they have movies still in theaters doing way less....

i would say right before the memorial day roll out signaling the unofficial start of summer movie season ...

thats why it might get 700 but barely ....well i hope ...700 jus looks way better than 695 or some shit like that ....:money:
