With all eyes on the Academy Awards, Hollywood was ruled once again by the runaway blockbuster sensation Black Panther which amassed an estimated $65.7M in its third frame making more than the next seven films combined. That was the third biggest gross of all-time for any film in its third weekend of release behind only Star Wars: The Force Awakens ($90.2M) and Avatar($68.5M) which both got help from the potent New Year’s holiday at those times. The decline for T’Challa this weekend was only 41%.
Panther watched its domestic cume crush the half-billion mark after only 17 days of release as the total soared to a stunning $501.1M. That ties it with Jurassic World for third fastest ever to break $500M. The Last Jedidid it in 16 days this past December while Force Awakens needed just ten days. It should be noted that the two Star Wars films played during the lucrative Christmas holiday season while Jurassic World was in late June when most schools were closing for summer vacations. Black Panther has had some school breaks, but played in a more standard time of year when box office sales are historically slower.
On the all-time domestic blockbuster chart, the Wakanda hit has risen to number ten and is currently sandwiched in between fellow Disney titles Beauty and the Beast and Finding Dory. In fact, seven of the top eleven blockbusters are from the Mouse House which is already planning out its box office dominance over the years ahead with an impressive calendar of titles it just announced leading into 2023. These include ten untitled Marvel films which most certainly would include one, if not two Black Panther sequels.
Black Panther has now had smaller declines on the second and third weekends than Avengers did in May 2012 and the road ahead continues to look bright. By Saturday it will surpass the $533.3M of The Dark Knight and it now stands a great chance of also passing the $623.4M of Avengers to become the highest grossing super hero movie of all-time in North America. The box office run and fan love for this film have exceeded all industry expectations and a domestic final in the $630-640M range is possible putting it at number five all-time.
International markets are also rocking for Panther with this weekend contributing an estimated $56.2M pushing the overseas cume to $396.6M and the global haul to $897.7M. The Marvel sensation will smash the $400M international and $900M worldwide marks on Monday. Top markets continue to be the U.K. at $49.1M and South Korea at $41.4M. Russia just went nationwide this past week, Japan opened well this weekend, and the final market of China opens this coming Friday where it is expected to be a big player. The last MCU film Thor: Ragnarok just did $112M there during the November-December period, although it opened day and date with the U.S. Worldwide, Black Panther looks to be on a trajectory to reach more than $1.25 billion at the global box office.
Two new star-driven, gritty action films opened this weekend fighting for the number two spot and Jennifer Lawrence’s espionage vehicle Red Sparrow came out ahead debuting to an estimated $17M from 3,056 locations for a good $5,563 average. Reviews were mixed and audiences were ok on the R-rated film with the CinemaScore grade being a B. The performance was almost even with Charlize Theron’s Atomic Blonde which bowed to $18.3M last July with a nearly identical average. Demo data indicated that the audience was 53% female, 79% over 25, and 60% white.
Bruce Willis saw a decent start for his new action offering Death Wish which bowed to an estimated $13M from 2,847 theaters for a $4,575 average. The R-rated revenge tale was clobbered by film critics, but paying audiences were much more pleased as the MGM release earned a good B+ grade from CinemaScore. Willis has been absent from the big screen for some time with his last major action film being the ensemble pic Sin City: A Dame to Kill For in 2014 and his last time anchoring a non-sequel being Looper in 2012. Studio data showed that the crowd was 57% male, 53% over 35, and 57% white. Death Wish opened much like Liam Neeson’s recent action film The Commuter which debuted to $13.7M in January.
The R-rated comedy Game Night held up well in its second weekend dropping 37% to an estimated $10.7M giving Warner Bros. $33.5M to date. With no new kids competition, Sony’s family comedy Peter Rabbitfell only 22% to an estimated $10M lifting the total to $84M on its way past the century mark.
Paramount’s sci-fi pic Annihilation grossed an estimated $5.7M, off 49%, for a sum of $20.6M. Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle kept up the great legs taking in an estimated $4.5M in its eleventh consecutive weekend in the top ten. Off a mere 20%, the Sony blockbuster has amassed $393.2M from North America and a giant $928.9M worldwide.
Suffering the worst decline in the top ten was Fifty Shades Freed which fell 54% to an estimated $3.3M with $95.6M overall for Universal. Global is now $346.2M. Like Jumanji, The Greatest Showman has been a major crowdpleaser since Christmas and also spent its eleventh straight frame in the top ten. The Fox hit took in an estimated $2.7M, off just 22%, for a $164.6M cume putting the worldwide tally at a big $375.8M. Rounding out the top ten was Orion’s Every Day with an estimated $1.6M, down 48%, and only $5.3M thus far.

I mean it's got a shot.... but asking for an additional 119 million domestic is a lot. A lot depends on what Winkle in Time brings in this weekend. Cause Tomb Raider opens Next and Pacific Rim Uprising Opens the week after that.
Also pay attention to Midnight Sun two weeks from Now.... It's a remake of a well loved Japanese Romance film and Bella Thorne has a audience with the Teen girls.
Then Ready Player One Drops the last week of the month.
But Black Panther still has a clear path to over take... Avengers.... Maybe Titanic (Which is still insane to think Titanic made that much back in 1997).. But I don't see it beating Avatar. I think it's going to Cap out around 3 or 4.

A Black Panther theme park ride is in the works, Bob Iger, chief executive of the Walt Disney Co. hinted on Monday.
Iger mentioned the news to a room full of Wall Street analysts while speaking at Morgan Stanley’s Technology, Media and Telecom Conference in New York.
“No, we haven’t had a chance to build a ride,” he said. “Though I’m sure there are people who are working on it.”
Marvel Studio’s Black Panther continues to dominate box offices since its release, becoming the studio’s third-highest grossing release of all-time domestically, behind The Avengers and Avengers: Age of Ultron. It is no surprise that the multinational conglomerate is trying to cash in on the hype.
He called the film “an important moment in culture” and noted that fans line up for about an hour at Disneyland, just to meet the Black Panther character.
“I pretty much guarantee that this coming Halloween and even Christmas, you know you’ll be seeing a lot of Black Panther merchandise,” Iger said.
He also said Black Panther will become Disney’s 12th billion-dollar franchise.
Iger also revealed that he expects his company to get regulatory approval of its $52.4 billion acquisition of most of the assets of 21st Century Fox and that his company will use some of Fox’s content for the launch of a Netflix-like streaming service, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
When Disney’s Over The Top (OTT) service launches next month, it will have less content than Netflix but Iger said it will have more branded content from Marvel, Lucasfilm, and Pixar. The Avengers movie, Toy Story 4, the next Frozen, Aladdin, and Dumbo are among the titles that will exclusively stream on the service. It will also have 5,000 episodes of Disney-branded TV, library movies and as many as five original shows and five original movies, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
The company is also launching a similar service for ESPN that will feature narrow offerings so consumers can purchase passes to every game played by a certain team, every game in a sport or every game in a particular season.

My theory about "THE FORMULA" and how it works proves true...
Domestically, Black Panther continues to play at the top end of the Marvel echelon while the best overseas comps are Doctor Strange, Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol 2and Thor: Ragnarok. BP is dominating each of those.
Internationally, this frame was worth $56.2M in 56 material markets. Overall abroad, holds were generally solid with a 42% decline from last weekend. While Italy and Spain have been notably soft on the Panther, he’s come up a bit in Germany versus the early dominance of Fifty Shades Freed. Elsewhere, BP is the highest-grossing movie of all time in West and East Africa; the top MCU title in the Netherlands; and has run past the lifetime of Thor 3 in Hong Kong, Korea, Malaysia, the Philippines, Taiwan and Vietnam, demonstrating the strong appetite in South East Asia despite initial concerns.
Next weekend T’Challa takes on China and should take the win with advance ticket sales that have been tracking at the level of Spider-Man: Homecoming. That film opened to $71M last September, and finaled at $116M.
Now that its proven to be hit WORLDWIDE they can't deny that blacks don't sell overseas..
If it doesn't happen its because Hollywood only doles out what I call "The Formula" mainly to whites and those very few non whites they want to push for whatever reason like Will Smith.
Smith didn't become a big ticket box office draw overnight but there was two films that were his turning point
The first two films he had supporting roles but impressed people with his acting skills enough to be taken seriously.
Then he does The Fresh Prince of Belair and thats a hit so now he has some heat. Then he proves his acting chops by holding his own with Donald Sutherland and Stockard Channing in straight drama 6 Degrees of Separation (playing a gay character btw).
But its the next 2 flicks that propels him into the stratosphere.
Bad Boys and Independence Day
Bad Boys was an action flick that showed he could fill out the screen. In fact you can isolate the scene that did it for him. The foot chase scene in Bad Boys. Both he and Martin looked absolutely heroic.
then he follows that up with ID4. A scifi action special effects driven flick.. The real draw of this movie was watching the massive destruction scenes and dogfights with alien ships.
While Smith was one of many in the ensemble cast he stood out and ate up the scenery in another heroic turn.
then he follows that with Men In Black. Teamed with Tommy Lee Jones as a pass for white and overseas audiences it was clear by that time that all eyes were on Smith to drive the action/hero antics. But it was a scifi film largely driven by really cool special effects and action.
Then came Enemy Of The State an action/thriller where again he's teamed with an older white man (this time gene hackman) again for the pass. Then Wild West with Kevin Kline and even tho that was a critical flop it STILL made a shit load of money overseas because of the steampunk scifi and action.
Then he goes back to artistic drama with Bagger Vanceand gets an oscar nom for Ali
Then its back to the formula with tried and true scifi and or action sequels MIB2 and Bad Boys 2. You don't see Will Smith alone on the poster in a big budget tentpole flick until I, Robot but by then he's a proven product and the movie is nothing but robots, action and the future...super safe bet for overseas audience and even cacs here.
You see the pattern right? Well you seen it before..with Arnold Schwarzenegger, Sly Stallone, Tom Cruise, Claude Van Damme, Steven Segal. Damn near all the 80s action heroes were developed this way. Given lead or costarring roles in heavy action, martial arts, scifi, thriller roles with broad appeal. And shipped all over the world.
If thats the formula and its proven to work...then heres the question again..
why can't they do that with Chadwick Boseman, Idris Elba, Chiwetel Edjiofor or David Oyelowelo,Anthony Mackie?? Why can't OSCAR NOMIMINEE Quvenzhane Wallis be slated for a Young Adult franchise like Shailene Woodley (Divergent) and Jennifer Lawrence (Hunger Games)??

Thanks to The Avengers, Downey is the top-grossing actor of the year. The film is the third highest-grossing of all time behind Titanic and Avatar. Although the movie was an ensemble, we only counted Downey as the star because he is the star who will walk away with the biggest payday from the film.
you see what all of these flicks have in common right..and a BLACK MAN scored the top slot to boot. And chris pratt...this dude went from playing a FOOL on a middling rated tv show where he was a SUPPORTING character to the lead of comic book movie based on a middling selling title from the 70s! and because of the FORMULA is now an A-list star set to reboot the Jurassic Park franchise and well as more GOTG installments. Basically pratt was a fucking NOBODY and they made him a SOMEBODY just like that.
But here's the kicker we've seen it with BLACK actors..Will Smith, Chris Tucker, Dwayne Johnson...the formula WORKS theyre just picking and choosing WHO they want it to work FOR.
The studios pump out 2-3 dozen movies a year theyre really depending on 3 or 4 tentpole flicks to make that financial nut for the year. Understand MOST of the films that come out either make a small profit or underperform and they just write that shit off. EXCEPT for films with minority casts then suddenly the excuses start to pile up on why they can't do certain things. White movie flops its a write off..black movie flops well maybe we shouldn't do...maybe it doesn't sell well, we don't know how to market blah blah..its all arbitrary.
So there's no real reason to NOT do a Miles Morales Spiderman flick..if they don't its because they DON'T WANT TO...
Domestically, Black Panther continues to play at the top end of the Marvel echelon while the best overseas comps are Doctor Strange, Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol 2and Thor: Ragnarok. BP is dominating each of those.
Internationally, this frame was worth $56.2M in 56 material markets. Overall abroad, holds were generally solid with a 42% decline from last weekend. While Italy and Spain have been notably soft on the Panther, he’s come up a bit in Germany versus the early dominance of Fifty Shades Freed. Elsewhere, BP is the highest-grossing movie of all time in West and East Africa; the top MCU title in the Netherlands; and has run past the lifetime of Thor 3 in Hong Kong, Korea, Malaysia, the Philippines, Taiwan and Vietnam, demonstrating the strong appetite in South East Asia despite initial concerns.
Next weekend T’Challa takes on China and should take the win with advance ticket sales that have been tracking at the level of Spider-Man: Homecoming. That film opened to $71M last September, and finaled at $116M.
Now that its proven to be hit WORLDWIDE they can't deny that blacks don't sell overseas..
