Rick and Morty season 3 discussion thread July 30th!

'Rick and Morty,' McDonald's Szechuan sauce and the internet
It's possibly the most Dan Harmon thing to ever happen.

Two decades ago, McDonald's released a promotional Szechuan-flavoured dipping sauce for McNuggets as a tie-in with Disney's "Mulan". Then the sauce got mentioned in the third season premier of cult hit "Rick and Morty," and things escalated quickly.

The show's creator, Dan Harmon, pulled what I thought was the most Dan Harmon of moves possible in dropping the third season premier on April 1 totally unannounced. That was before the episode went to great pains to explain the quality of the McNugget sauce which hasn't been available since 1998.

The dimension-hopping protagonist in the show, Rick Sanchez, and an insectoid alien voiced by Nathan Fillion both go nuts for the spicy sauce. While the McDonald's Szechuan sauce might not actually be Rick Sanchez's raison d'etre, it sure is the latest thing the internet is taking far too seriously.

Now we're looking at dozens of eBay auctions of people claiming to be selling the sauce, a petition to bring it back with 25,000 signatures at time of writing, DIY recipes and thousands of tweets begging for that sweet, sweet #szechuansauce.

Of course, "Rick and Morty" knows that it's on to something. Looks like McDonald's does too.

McDonald's bringing back Szechuan sauce after Rick and Morty reference

Like most Dan Harmon productions, Rick and Morty is replete with constant references to pop culture esoterica. Earlier this year, the Adult Swim cartoon’s season 3 premiere delivered a masterstroke example of this tendency with an extended digression about Szechuan sauce, a special chicken nugget dipping sauce that McDonald’s once issued for a limited time as promotion for the Disney animated film Mulan. The bit inspired the show’s devoted fans to pressure McDonald’s to bring back the sauce.

“Your fans showed us what they got, now we got to bring it back. Super limited-run Szechuan Sauce, only on 10/7!” Haracz tweeted, including a low-key reference to another Rick and Morty episode in which a giant floating alien head demands Earth’s inhabitants “show me what you got” in the form of a musical competition.

Haracz included a link to a website announcing new “Buttermilk Crispy Tenders” from McDonald’s — but more importantly, the site announces that McDonald’s will indeed be bringing back Szechuan sauce to limited restaurants for one day only on Oct. 7, along with colorful posters representing each of the 10 sauces McDonald’s has used over the years, including Szechuan sauce.

Speaking to EW, co-creator Dan Harmon discussed the Szechuan sauce reference and how McDonald’s sent Roiland a discontinued supply of the dipping delight. “I didn’t want to peg Justin down about whether it was as good, partly because I think he got together with other friends and tasted it without me first,” Harmon said. “And if McDonald’s is going to be so generous I don’t want to lure them in and then take a crap on their product. But I personally thought it was a sauce that was trying too hard in a world where with McNuggets sauce you just want something to taste like honey or like a BBQ sauce. It was sauce that was trying to prove it was different and in doing so it worked harder than a sauce should; it was working too hard to be a sauce…”

At the end of the season 3 premiere, a drunk Rick declared that finding more Szechuan sauce was “my series arc, Morty! Even if it takes nine seasons!” As it turns out, fans won’t have to wait that long after all.

couldn't make it through the vid about beth's mother.

at this point i dont know if it matters though...beth is the linchpin.

Yeah. I figured that was a clone of Beth. I didn't think they'd figure out a way to bring Jerry back.

Not only is that clone Beth, that might not even be Rick Original Family.

I wish they would have brought evil Morty into the last episode.

Not sure exactly what you mean by Rick's original family, but technically that isn't Rick or Morty's family.

I may be one of the few who believe Beth isn't a clone. Granted Rick has been shown to fuck up in the past. I don't see him making a clone and letting the clone retain the memory of the discussion around making a Beth clone.

Even if Rick couldn't create a clone with limited memories, he could have easily used the memory eraser that he uses on Morty after the clone was created.

He's been through 3 Jerry's already in the series.

Anyway, the more I think about it the more I think Beth isn't a clone.

Wasn't going to go in to details but it has already been established that Rick and Morty took over the places of a Rick and Morty who died in an explosion.

I wasn't sure if he had some other theories, was new to the show or just meant something else entirely.

1st Jerry: When season 1 started.
2nd Jerry: When they left Kronenburg world.
3rd Jerry: When Morty lost the ticket at Jerryboree.

I'm not debating what you are saying, so I'm not sure why you are doing a breakdown. Maybe you were just giving more details and I'm taking it the wrong way or you took my comment the wrong way.

When I said I didn't want to go into details, I meant I was trying not to do too much spoiling before you brought up Jerry. Truthfully I had already said too much.

Like I said before, I wasn't sure if the poster I responded to was new to the series. I wasn't attempting to prove a point to you or debate with you.

RICK AND MORTY RENEWED FOR 70 MORE EPISODES

BY ALEX GILYADOV Rick and Morty is officially coming back, and it'll be returning with many new episodes.

Justin Roiland revealed on Twitter with a sketch of the titular duo, confirming that Rick and Morty will be back for 70 more episodes. Adult Swim confirmed the news, retweeting Roiland's announcement and simply saying "What Justin said."

Co-creator Dan Harmon shared a hilarious Instagram video announcing him and Roiland have to get back to work to accompany Roiland's episode confirmation. Neither Roiland nor Harmon revealed when exactly the new episodes and the fourth season will premiere, however, and there is no news on the cadence of these episodes' release.

News of Season 4's potential delay first surfaced earlier this year when a writer-producer on the show, Ryan Ridley, claimed no one was working on the series. A few months later, Harmon revealed contract negotiationsbetween him, Roiland, and Adult Swim's parent company Turner were to blame for the lack of work being done on new episodes.

However, Harmon shared a more optimistic update in April, saying he expected Rick and Morty to return sooner rather than later. It's still not known what the exact problem with the contract talks was, but everything appears to have been cleared up to allow new episodes to move forward.
