When a church has financial issues what does it do, ask membership for help. What is a church if it should not also be a refuge for its people when there is a crisis? Just a social gathering place to collect money?!?! Same thing with his staff, so, their only job is to be put in place to collect money during services?
Novel idea, if they are asked to help as paid staff members, bring their families with them and put them up in a section for staff members?!?! I've been to that church and there is MORE than enough room for that and to accommodate displaced families. I do know a church in ATL used to do it for a minute, but they had some legal issues where a person refused and threatened to take legal action so they fell back...

I've heard this is required by some churches if you are a member and are supposedly tithing. It came to my attention when someone told me a few years back that some older lady had her church membership revoked over it. I don't recall the details.
The problem I have with it, is that under the new testament believers are told to give as they are led to give, there isn't a mandatory tithe. So any church teaching that it is, is suspect to me.
My mom used to tithe, when she fell out with the pastor that took over my grandfather's church, she saved the money, and would send it to people or organizations needing disaster relief, or if she saw a hardship story on the news or in the paper.

Old testament you had the 12 tribes of Israel. The Levites weren't supposed to work, they were the priestly tribe that attended to the things of God so the other tribes paid a tenth of their income or grain or whatever to support them.
The scripture used to support tithing "Will a man rob God?" speaks to a time they had to work to take care of themselves because the other tribes broke covenant and weren't doing their part. God sent the prophet Malachi to warn them.
Since the coming of Christ people don't need a priest to intercede with God on their behalf. We can enter His throne room anytime through prayer. Churches, teachers, corporate worship still have their place, and people get blessings for giving, but there are no longer Levites or a priestly tribe to support and therefore no mandatory tithe required.

Funny thing is, thats actually what I do now. I'd rather help someone in need than contribute to an extravagant lifestyle that gives nothing back. There is a pastor friend and a larger church in Delaware where my sister goes, the church for his birthday took up collections and fund raisers and brought him a Bentley. He thanked them for the car, and over the next few weeks sold the car, and brought 3 minivans for single mothers in the church and used the rest to help people who were in financial trouble. He said, 'How can I as your shepherd drive in such a vehicle, and I have people who are struggling in my church. The church was meant to help people, not glorify the leader'. A few church members were swole and left the church, but thats the heart I dig. People want to tear down religious belief systems, but ultimately, there are a LOT of churches helping people, not greasing them, larger memberships but the Pastors still have jobs and are working. Its the few criminals types out there that give the overall structure a bad name...
