Umar Johnson vs. Roland Martin

Roland's panel better be glad this wasn't longer b/c Dr Umar would have done even more damage to their asses. Say what you want about Dr Umar, he was unapologetically black on the panel. It's good to see a black man being unapologetically black on TV for once.

Where you lose me is when you start naming all these tv shows and pop stars like its an actual representation of reality.

Spider man, the flash, walking dead and the kardashians? Wtf?

Its an interesting conversation to have but we have to keep it based on reality.

I do hear you about being united. Other cultures usually dont mix and that helps alot with culture and unity, what follows automatically is that money made within the community stays and only benefits that community. Like we always talk about buying black. Those are facts.

Thats not what Umar is talking about though. He is talking about fighting for your people. I would argue that the peeps Roland named have done alot more for their people then Umar has done. I dont think its debatable actually. For Umar to say they dont have his respect is ridiculous.
It's NOT ridiculous when you look at it from HIS perspective..and that's exactly how i'm looking at this.

DEaxwdIW0AAlI9V.jpg:large
That's what had me disturbed about the segment that the conversation shift into let's praise the nonexistent systemic movement that white folks have supported from the two on the right of the panel. I decided to stop following Roland after i caught on to his Democratic party ass kissing. And although Umar went up there and spit flames, the attorney in the far left of the panel agreed with him when he said that his mother would complain in secrecy about sleep white, but talk black, yet Umar still said he wasn't fit for the discussion at hand. Burned down the fucking stage and i enjoyed every fucking second.

Rolands 1st, 2nd, and 3rd love is the democratic party and kissing white ass within the democratic party
you niggas fall somewhere else down the line with him

when are yall going to wake up?

he new exactly what he was doing when he put those guests on his panel and with his aggressive line of questioning

that shit felt like a fox news segment
can you imagine a legitimate news source doing a segment based off of black twitter gossip

sighs

What agressive line of questioning?

When did this happen?

Man a lot of heat up in here. We are definitely on the brink of total chaos, let the talking heads do what they do but Joe Q. Public is in for an extremely rude awakening.

Dr Umar Johnson stood firm on ALL the shit he said...he didn't utter mutter or studder on his shit

Bullshit!! he didn't give his ancestor SHIT...he was included..View the clip again but this time try to do more than Listen..HEAR what he's saying playa.

I did hear it. He said he needs to be criticized too. However, while refusing to recognize those Civil Rights icons that married white women, he has no problem letting the world know he a descendant of Fredrick Douglass. By HIS LOGIC, he shouldn't even acknowledge any relationship to Douglass do to him marrying a white woman. Shit on the Rock Newman show he brags about Douglass being his great great great grand uncle and naming his future school after him.

Go to 53:06 when he talks about naming his future school. So yes, he is giving Douglass a pass for marrying a white woman.

During the latter part of the interview, he kept asking: "What have they (white people) done to improve opportunities for Black people?." as if it had never happened. However, Pink Tie's answers were correct: The Civil Rights Act of 1964 (under JFK) and the Voting Rights Act were put into effect by whites and those acts did system-wide provide more opportunities for African-Americans. As well, recently there has been various criminal justice reform that on an ongoing basis is expanding state by state. Pink Tie made mention of that as well.

The Civil Rights Act of 1964 dismantled Jim Crow segregation and ensured fair hiring practices which benefited Black folks directly. LBJ's Civil Rights act of 1968 expanded on the earlier one by establishing a Civil Rights Division and Commission in the justice department. It expanded the protections afforded by the 1964 Act to include hiring by all businesses- public or private, big or small. Nixon expanded on the provisions offered by the two versions of the Civil Rights Act by introducing affirmative action.

Umar was correct about women being protected under Title VII of the Act and this year LGBTQ being included in it. A good argument can be made asserting that it negatively affects the fact
that it was initially developed to protect and provide for Black folks. However that still does not negate the truth that through the Act, over the last 50 years opportunity that was not previously available was opened for Black folks.

As the Voting Rights Act goes:

"The bill outlawed poll taxes, literacy tests, and other practices that had effectively prevented southern blacks from voting. It authorized the US attorney general to send federal officials to the South to register black voters in the event that local registrars did not comply with the law, and it also authorized the federal government to supervise elections in districts that had disfranchised African Americans. The Voting Rights Act of 1965 transformed patterns of political power in the South. By the middle of 1966, over half a million Southern blacks had registered to vote, and by 1968, almost four hundred black people had been elected to office."

Umar spoke not a word about that.

He kept asking for answers that he was already given.

As for his assertion that:
"There’s not a white person in America who has ever worked to systematically eliminate the white privilege that they benefit from vis a vis oppression."

John Brown would be an example of such a white person. One could also point out the Quakers who helped guide escaped captives to freedom in the North during slavery. It is not to say that the so-called Underground Railroad was guided and maintained by whites. No, it was predominantly Blacks helping other Blacks. However the Quakers were among a minority of whites who assisted in this process.

The woman who kept mentioning Tim Wise needed to shut the f*ck up.

Umar articulated his points better than anyone on that panel, by far. However, the forcefulness of Umar's style of argumentation does not supersede historical fact.

I wished the other guy had more chance to talk. He was making Umar points more accessible

It was too short. It should have been 45 minutes of actual one-one-one interview and about 15 minutes of questions and comments from the panel. Also, Roland needed to have established a better protocol of order for his panelists.

Prior to loosing TV One due to changing cable systems, I watched Roland daily. My girl and I always enjoyed home girl from the show because she was often on-point on a lot of things. However, I was kind of curious about why she was so stuck on the white thing. As far I can tell, she has never really talked about her personal life on the show, so I don't know if she dates or is married to someone who is not black.
according to dr boyce she's a feminist

Roland didn't need those people to "debate" Umar. Ya just let him speak and it's obvious. Roland just asking the questions was enough.
I agree. It got messy. Some on that panel came off very emotionally - as did Umar.

There was no new ground broken here. Regarding the Frederick Douglass connection, Umar said he never claimed to have been Frederick's descendant but that he did claim to be a relative - rather a descendant of one of Douglass' siblings. He then rattled off a list of names that purportedly encompassed the family tree connection from Frederick to himself. No documentation of any sort was presented as proof of his claim, however. To quote African-Resistance:

"Facts are not established by words but with evidence."

To Umar's credit, he verbally gave a complete listing of what he said were his degrees and where those degrees were earned. That kind of lucidity concerning his educational background is rare. Again though:
the above statement on facts and evidence applies.

Though personally I've long ago resolved to not deal sexually or romantically with anyone other than a Sista and I do not advocate swirling, I found some statements of his questionable. Various political reasons were given why Black folks marry white - including his perception that the Black partner in an interracial relationship subconsciously wants to be white. However, never he mention the possibility that sometimes people get together simply because they fall in love with each other.

As brother @AllUniverse17 pointed out, there is no quantifiable data indicating that swirling Blacks who are part of the struggle for human rights and liberation for Black people - are automatically self-hating, insincere or sell-outs. Certainly we have seen some (like Clarence Thomas or Charles Barkley) who are married to white women, demonstrate selling us out through their words and actions. On the other hand, we have seen others who demonstrated those same tendencies (Steve Harvey, Stephen A. Smith) who acquaint themselves with romantic partners of their own race.

I don't like Tim Wise either, but Umar's question about what he and other individuals have done to "systematically improve opportunities for (Black) folks" makes no sense. A single person can not provide systematic ongoing opportunity to an entire population of millions of people in America - unless it is an executive order coming from the President himself.

For that matter, other than giving paid lectures, traveling, collecting money, making YouTube videos and being on social media, what has Umar himself tangibly done to improve the lot of Black folks? I mean other than talking? I'm not saying that he hasn't done anything, but I haven't seen tangible evidence of it. Perhaps someone can show me what I've missed.

The interview was definitely an interesting exchange. Umar is a great speaker- one of the best I've seen. So, his words and ideas were compelling. Yet many of the same questions remain: Where are your statements proving that all you have collected from donors towards a school since approx. 2012/2013 to the present is in the amount of $700,000? Why have you not yet started a school in that time? Where does the money go to exactly? Who is on your school's board of directors? Where are the public financial accounts of expenditures of monies collected and monies spent? What is the financial plan of sustainability? *

Perhaps he's telling the truth about his ancestry, his education and his fundraising and "school building".

The fact checkers will find out, for sure.

That is what was needed.
The other guests added nothing.
the interracial marriage point was sticky point for Umar. When confronted with the fact that FD had a white (2nd) wife, he excused him, but not others.

Talk black, sleep white, would be a great separate segment.
I don't know if this is "ambush" interview, Umar points have always been challenged.

He didnt excuse him. Listen again. He also noted the distinction in that he married and procreated with a black woman and married white as a senior near end days.
You're right. He did make the distinction. But then, according to his own criteria wouldn't that mean that at the end of his life, FD must have remarried to a white woman because he himself desired to be white?

He said just that on the breakfast club interview

Thats definitely one way to assess it. Another way is the context he provided provides for some gray area and leeway. He spent his entire life fighting for black civil liberties and equality. Mated with a african woman and produced black children. At the end of his life he married a long time employee and abolitionish. But again, he didnt make an excuse. He admitted he struggled with FD decision to do so even as a 70 something year old man.

He didn't say he struggled with it. He stated that Frederick Douglas doesn't get a pass either.

While everyone is grabbing the popcorn for the Blac Chyna/Rob Kardashian beef, the real donnybrook was happening yesterday on TV One’s News One Now, when Roland Martin invited ankh-right leader Umar Abdullah-Johnson on his morning show.

Everything seemed cool in The Great Ascot vs Daishiki War, and then everything exploded. Umar called a panelist on the show a “coon” and the segment erupted into a shouting match whose volume is rarely heard outside of Baptist church deacon board meetings. Even though Umar went into his belligerent “this-motherfucker-is-lying” voice in record time, he made a number of claims about himself that many have asked for years. Instead of wild speculation, we decided to look into these claims and settle them once and for all.

To be clear, The Root does not have a vendetta against Umar Johnson, but we believe anyone who has collected almost three-quarters of a million dollars from black people should be vetted. You think Newsweek would do this? Do you think The Washington Post even knows who Umar Johnson is?

While we didn’t look into some of the more defamatory accusations that have emerged in the last weeks, the “Conscious stripper” fiasco, or that weird screaming video against another Hotepticon where he answered the phone while it was still ringing, we decided to focus on the claims that have emerged from Umar’s own un-mustachioed mouth.

He said he a certified school psychologist. Is he?

In a word: Yes

ysbixukxvpkd5ms5xeuu.png

The Root did as Johnson suggested to Roland Martin and called Millersville University. We talked to the admissions office, who sent us to the registrar’s office, who told us that all verification of degrees, enrollment and credentials are handled by the National Student Clearinghouse—who contracts with many colleges and Universities.

The National Student Clearinghouse verified Johnson’s graduation from Millersville University, but because there has been speculation that the Umar Abdullah-Johnson in those records was a different guy, we searched the archives and found this picture of Johnson as a senior at Millersville University.

We also found evidence that Johnson is certified as a school psychologist in the state of Pennsylvania.

i5pqepo6s6puvxxx7ju9.png

So what happened to all that money he raised?

For more than 5 years, Johnson has traveled the country raising money to open the Frederick Douglass Marcus Garvey Leadership Academy for Black Boys (FDMG), receiving donations from thousands of his supporters. In 2014 he informed the public that he was looking to buy the now-defunct St. Paul’s College in Virginia and turn it into a boarding school. When confronted about the specifics, he has refused to answer the question, as he did in this video:

Two weeks after that video was uploaded in January 2015, Johnson told a crowd that because people didn’t want to take their “lazy ass to the post office and get a stamp” he opened an account with Paypal. However, in the same video, Johnson informed his followers that Paypal froze more than $100,000 in donations because he didn’t have 501©(3) status required for tax-exempt, non-profit organizations. He then states that he has applied for the tax-exempt status.

On March 3, 2015, Johnson created a GoFundMe page with the express purpose “to acquire and rehabilitate either the Historically Black St.Paul’s College in Lawrenceville Virginia or the Chamberlain-Hunt Academy in Port Gibson Mississippi”

To date, GoFundme says that he has raised $375,989 in the 28 months since he began his campaign. This does not include the cash he has raised through in-person solicitations at speaking engagements or the money that has been mailed to him by supporters outside of his online campaign. On Monday’s NewsOne Now show, Johnson told Martin that he has raised $700,000.

To date, no one has seen financial documentation showing how much money he has collected, or how he has used any of the funds. No one has seen a business plan, an application for accreditation or nothing tangible that indicates he is making strides towards this mythical school.

According to IRS rules, all non-profit organizations are required to “make available for public inspection certain annual returns and applications for exemption, and must provide copies of such returns and applications to individuals who request them.” Plus, Internal Revenue Service mandates that “no part of a section 501©(3) organization’s net earnings may inure to the benefit of any private shareholder or individual.”

This solves everything, right? Since Johnson said he applied for tax-exempt status in 2015, anyone who asks for financial records for the FDMG school get them, right? Anything else wouldn’t just be unscrupulous, it is illegal for a non-profit to hide its finances, and there is video, of Johnson, saying he applied two-and-a-half years ago for 501©(3) status.

But, when The Root searched the IRS database for the Frederick Douglass Marcus Garvey School, they could find no record of Johnson’s application, under his name, the name of the school (There is a “Frederick Douglas Mastery Charter School listed in Pennsylvania, but that’s not it) or any variation of the name. We even searched for the address he lists for donations—nothing.

As it stands, there are thousands of people who have donated between half a million and three-quarters of a million dollars for black empowerment and uplift, but no one knows what happened to their money.

Is he a descendant of Frederick Douglas?

During his rise to prominence, Johnson has been accused of lying about his familial relationship to civil rights hero Frederick Douglass, forcing the family to issue a statement that reads in part:

The family of Frederick Douglass has received numerous inquiries about Umar Johnson questioning his relationship to Frederick Douglass. There have also been questions about the legitimacy of his PhD and handling of the donations he’s received for a school he is promoting. We can tell you with 100% certainty that he is not a descendant of Frederick Douglass.

With that being said, Mr. Johnson is very careful not to bill himself as a “descendant”, but he doesn’t correct people when they refer to him in this way.

Johnson told Roland Martin that he has never claimed to be a direct descendant of Frederick Douglass. Instead, Johnson asserts that his great great great great grandfather was Douglass’ first cousin.

Yet, Johnson has often claimed, as he does in this clip, to be a “direct ancestor” of Frederick Douglass, even though almost every genealogical researcher agrees that the term applies to “someone from whom you descend in a direct line, parent to child, grandparent, great-grandparent, etc.

Also, the Douglass, family’s claims that he doesn’t correct people when he is referred to as a “direct descendant” is supported in this short video.

To be clear: None of Frederick Douglass blood flows through Umar Johnson’s veins. The closest he will admit is that maybe he shares a lineage with Douglass, which is akin to thinking you end up in Snoop Dogg’s will because he calls you “cousin.” This research foiled my plans to inherit a great booty-shake fortune from my Uncle Luke.

But is he a doctor?

This is the million-dollar question. It is impossible to prove a negative. Just like you can’t prove that I am not a Jedi and an X-Man who possesses the ability to fly, even if you’ve seen no evidence of it—I can’t prove Umar Johnson is not a doctor of Psychology.

However, The Root searched every level of Umar Johnson’s education but could find no proof that he holds a doctorate in Psychology. But what started off as simple educational research has turned into a mystery.

The school Johnson claims he attended for his doctorate—Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine—also participates in the National Student Clearinghouse. They could not verify a degree for any variation of Umar Abdullah-Johnson’s name, or his birth name, Jermaine Shoemake.

Every doctoral candidate must submit a dissertation and PCOM makes their students’ dissertations available online. When we looked through the University’s archives, we found a link to Umar Johnson’s dissertation, “The Relationship between Self-Concept and Academic Achievement in African American Middle School Students: A Correlational Study,” which indicates that Johnson indeed submitted a thesis in PCOM’s Doctor of Psychology program. But unlike the other dissertations, Johnson’s was not available for download.

We then looked at the graduation ceremony program for 2010 —the year Johnson’s dissertation was submitted. He was not listed on the commencement program, even though he appears in the 2009 program as a doctoral candidate. In fact, we could not find any evidence that Johnson graduated from PCOM.

Mysteriously, a .pdf program of every commencement exercise at the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine is available online except for the years Umar Johnson supposedly graduated. 99% of students who received a doctorate from PCOM have their dissertation available online, but Umar Johnson’s is not.

PCOM also posts videos of their graduation ceremonies online (They have cataloged them on YouTube in a playlist)—except someone has submitted a copyright infringement claim for the only the graduate ceremony on the year Umar Johnson supposedly graduated.

The fact that Johnson’s dissertation, commencement program, graduation ceremony and every other piece of documentation that he graduated from PCOM with a doctorate disappeared from the internet is either the biggest coincidence in the history of histories or he does not have a doctoral degree,

So, What now?

Well, if I had the cure for racism, black unity, the education of black boys or whatever he claims to know, and the only thing holding me back was the widespread belief that I was a Hotep charlatan—when I walked on the set of Roland Martin’s show, I’d have my degree and a transcript. When I showed up at The Breakfast Club studio, I’d have certified financial breakdowns of where people’s donations went. The fact that he does not and will not do this is Donald Trump tax returns-level strange.

So I’m not saying that Umar Johnson is a lying con-man who stole money from his own people (many of whom are poor, but hopeful) by lying about his credentials, his family history and his past. I’m not even trying to insinuate that all of what Umar says is a lie. I also would never tell anyone that they shouldn’t trust Johnson simply because he lies and steals (although I think it says somewhere in Fourth Thessalonians that you should never trust a man who wakes up in the morning and shaves his mustache off). When he gives speeches about uplifting the black woman, I’d never remind you of this tweet:

All I’m saying is that just because Umar Johnson is hiding his financial records, lying about where he gets his money from, defaming women on Twitter, and travels around the country fooling poor, uneducated people that he is on their side, doesn’t mean he is a con man...

Maybe he’s just colluding with the Russians.
