If their contract stipulates that they have to hit certain milestones to get a check, they would be upset if they didn't.

Right; all you need is a few hundred for a couple of hours of studio time and a hot beat and a distribution channel which is your PC. Clothes? You need marketing, raw materials, testers, distribution channels; all of which cost BIG money before you make one sale.
I would've personally waited to see how they developed as players. Develop your business plan in private, and if it makes sense, unveil at the right time.
