Wife and I visited in 2016 and brought our son in 2019. We loved it! We would have moved but didn't due to family obligations and other stuff.
Pros:
- beautiful city, nature, clean air, nice people, safe, walkable, different distinct areas with their own personality, very foodie type of town, diff cultures & cuisines.
Cons:
- cost of housing (on par with California, NYC)(migrating from GA would be a stark contrast), knowing no one, small pop of black people
When we went the first time, we stayed downtown. Downtown was walkable, even at midnight, we didn't feel in danger. Architecture is beautiful. Public transportation is there (busses, didn't see any trains). The restaurants all had friendly staff. Multicultural, but a high pop of Asians. Food was great! Yaletown, Gastown, West End. We did a trip and walked the
Capilano bridge. The air in Stanley Park was like amazing - didn't need any of my allergy meds and my nose didn't get stuffed up. The climate there is very tepid, as we walked around in december with light jackets on.
When we went back with my toddler son, we felt the same energy. We went to Granville Island. We took a tour (hop on hop off bus). They noted that the most dangerous place in the city was a 7-8 block area that had drug users and homeless throughout. But, on one end of the block, you had 20 drug users - the other end was the entrance to a condo where the Penthouse sold for 3 million earlier that year. Weather in March was the same, light jacket, highs in the upper 60's. They had people on the beach, riding jet skis. You don't feel the racism tension there as much as other places.
After that trip, we started to really think about moving there and started looking. My wife and I could find employment with ease, the schools were very nice and rated high. The problem is, my in-laws stay 10 min away from us now in GA. I wasn't going to take their only daughter and only grandkid away and move them thousands of miles away. In-laws are up in age, so have to be able to visit them and drop by if they need anything. If I won the lottery, I would move us and my in-laws there.
