A steady stream of Galaxy S8 leaks have been making their way online over the past several weeks, but this afternoon, the dam finally burst. VentureBeat’s Evan Blass (@evleaks) published a comprehensive report on Thursday describing each and every component and feature of Samsung’s upcoming flagship phone, and even provided a never-before-seen photo of the device, which you can see below.

According to Blass, the details shared by the Guardian earlier this week regarding the two models having displays that take up a vast majority of the front of the device were true. Blass says that there will be two Galaxy S8 models — one with a 5.8-inch and another with a 6.2-inch QHD Super AMOLED display.

The displays reportedly take up 83% of the front panel, leaving no room for physical buttons or interactive sensors on the front of the device. Both screens also curve around the side of the handset, which means that both models will effectively be Galaxy S8 “edge” models. You can see what it will look like below:

As has become standard in recent years, some models of the Galaxy S8 will feature Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 835 processor, while others will include Samsung’s own Exynos chipset, but both will utilize 10nm tech. This will supposedly allow the S8 to be 11% faster than the S7 overall.

The Galaxy S8 is also said to be 20% more power efficient than its predecessor, which is especially important because the 5.8-inch model and 6.2-inch model are reportedly equipped with 3000mAh and 3500mAh batteries, respectively. With such massive displays, power consumption will be a concern.

As for the rest of the specs, Blass’s report claims that Samsung will stick with 4GB of RAM for another generation, but will upgrade the standard internal storage to 64GB, as opposed to 32GB. On the bottom of the device sits a USB-C charging port, a 3.5mm headphone jack and stereo speakers.

While the 12-megapixel rear camera and 8-megapixel front camera won’t receive major upgrade this time around, Samsung is bringing visual search functionality to the phone and is placing a sensor for iris scanning alongside the selfie camera, which all of you scorned Note 7 users should appreciate. It’s also worth noting that the fingerprint sensor has been moved to the back of the phone, just to the side of the rear camera. Of all the design choices Samsung made, this is undoubtedly the most curious.

Other features of the Galaxy S8 include the desktop view-enabling Samsung DeX (which we covered in detail earlier today), the Bixby digital assistant and pressure-sensitive force touch.

Finally, Blass says that Samsung will unveil the two Galaxy S8 models at an event in New York on March 29th. The phones will go on sale in Europe on April 21st: €799 for the 5.8-inch model and €899 for the 6.2-inch model, which translates to roughly $850 and $960, respectively.

Got my S7 Edge back in November and promptly dropped that bitch earlier this month. Cracked the screen with a case on it....200 deductible.

Best phone I ever had, but with no bezel on the sides, you have to be super careful with it even in a case. Just a heads up for those of you that will invest in the 8 that's basically the same design.

IF true that battery is waaaay to small for that big ass amoled screen. I love Samsung (I've owned every note and a few Galaxy devices), but I bought a 128gb one plus 3T....for $469 shipped. Fuck $1,000 phones.

Yall with these IR blasters. Probably 99% of people don't require them, and we all know Samsung is done with them too. Most of us have universal remotes that control our entire entertainment systems that are way easier and intuitive to use then a phone remote.

If you're still just thinking about changing the channel on an idiot box you're not thinking big enough.

My man, you got to get tempered glass for the screen and a case for the phone.

"Cracked the screen with a case on it"

Gonna invest in that tempered glass protection though. I just hate having anything on my screen.....but I'd rather have that than come up off of another 200.

Good Shit. You right. One drop on the top, bottom or sides and it could be a wrap.

Still..one..speaker.

I think that the "leaks"....are on purpose....drum up the publicity after the battery debacle!!!!

98% of all leaks are publicity stunts..

Some advice. Stop using the insurance the cell companies offer. I've started using a company call squaretrade, the deductible with them is $99. The only negative with them is they dont offer insurance if you lose your phone or it gets stolen

That's not the point of IR. When I travel across the US and I'm in a hotel with either a remote (that's missing or busted) I liked that fact that could just aim my phone. Or when I'd go to my friend's house and the remote would be missing in the couch I'd just aim my phone. The shit was mad convenient. I have a LG V20 right now and I use the IR all the time

I thought Samsung would come stronger with the 8. I am keeping a close eye on this especially with their QC fuckup with 7.

I use to have the LG V20 and tried it, and found it wasnt good enough for my use at home. And I travel a lot, and never been to a hotel with a busted remote, nor a friends house with a busted remote. Not saying you're embellishing to justify the need of one, but really, what type of hotels you go to and so many remotes are busted, and that includes the friends house too

i still use my phone to control my tv and other samsung stuff. everything is connected via wifi and the remote features work through that way better then IR

Bruh it happenes. Not embellishing. Just got from Colorado on business that IR was a life saver when we couldn't find the remote. Shit is still dope.

Yeah I miss the IR blaster. I used it to change channels in restaraunts ( with/without permission ). I dont think Samsung is going to mess up the next go round with the phone , IR blaster or not.

Yeah, but I bought one of those Logitech Harmony Elites. I can use that thing in a different room and it still works

It won’t be long until the Galaxy S8 is officially unveiled and we already know the design is so stylish it already looks like one of 2017’s best and most exciting smartphones. But now two potential deal breakers have leaked this week…

Deal Breaker #1: Invasive Samsung Branding

One of the highlights of the Galaxy S8 is that fact it fits a much larger screen into a chassis no larger than the Galaxy S7 thanks to super slim top and bottom bezels. Yet Samsung might be about to waste this screen space.

According to a tweet by Evan Blass (aka evleaks), arguably the world’s most famous leaker, the narrowness of the Galaxy S8 bezels means Samsung won’t be able to fit its branding onto them. But minimalist fans should not rejoice because Blass says the company is planning what would surely be a hugely unpopular workaround: “the top 1/4" of screen will be hard-coded to display SAMSUNG”.

Could Samsung really waste valuable screen space with self promotional permanent branding like this? Image credit: Veniamin Geskin

If true, this is be completely ridiculous and counteract the entire point of slimming down the Galaxy S8’s bezels in the first place. I hope Blass is joking, but he is rarely one to post deliberately bogus information or troll his followers.

Deal Breaker #2: A Bizarre, Awkward Fingerprint Reader

For some time there has been growing excitement that the Galaxy S8 will ditch its home button and integrate the fingerprint sensor into the screen. Why? Firstly because the super slim bezels are too thin to fit one and secondly because it’ll look amazing. Furthermore LG has been promoting the commercial viability of such technology since May 2016.

But it now appears Samsung has missed the boat. Recent leaks show the Galaxy S8 will simply reposition the fingerprint sensor on the back of the phone (some hate this, I love it) yet the real irritation is precisely where.

A leaked Galaxy S8 prototype shows the fingerprint beside the camera lens. Image credit: VentureBeat

Common sense has seen smartphone makers put rear fingerprint sensors where your index finger can easily reach, but instead Blass tweets that it will be positioned at the top of the phone beside the rear camera. This is stupid not only because it is hard to reach, but also because it means you’re going to accidentally touch the camera lens all the time which will require regular wiping if you don’t want to snap blurry photos.

Too Good To Be True?

Some have said recent leaks of the Galaxy S8 were too good to be true and daft decisions like those above would certainly show Samsung is capable of snatching defeat from the jaws of victory. But don’t panic just yet.

For starters, if Samsung is mad enough to emblazon its logo on the display then a software update could remove it should there be inevitable customer backlash. Furthermore leaked shots which corroborate the silly placement of the fingerprint sensor may be early prototypes and multiple leaked case renders last week showed no cutout for a rear fingerprint sensor so perhaps the final Galaxy S8 does indeed have it integrated into the display?

Either way, even with the recent release delay, there’s not long until we find out…
