Looks like Birth of a Nation may end up being a Bust...

fully.
we have spoken.
we are about the bullshit.
madea halloween will be packed.

how can you say "we" are about bullshit,

when the only reason I heard of this movie and knew it was opening is because of bgol..

I think the marketing dept for fox is about that bullshit..

but the fact remains...

his investors already made their money back and then some...

cant wait to see it this week....

Yeah, but how does that bode for the NEXT piece of classic art that will never make it past the straight to DVD flow, when in reality it needs to be mass broadcasted? The fact that the individual investors for THIS movie doesn't rate it high so far with the overall power base in Hollywood... Unfortunately, until there is a dynamic where we can finance our own movies, we still have to represent...

The fact that so many of our people have not supported this movie is an indictment on US, not the quality of the movie. The permise that it is a bust is not based on the quality of the movie, but the fact that many of us would rather wait to download it from BGOL or buy it from someones trunk instead of going out and supporting it.

Yesterday, my wife and I went with a group of 20 plus people to go see it, and the theater wasn't even half full... and the show before us had even less people in it... This is on US, not the movie...

holocaust angle is still fresh i guess

Why do people always need to point at the white people angle? How many movies and tv shows about slavery have come out in the past 2 years? Honestly? Do you really expect people to keep going to see that shit over and over again? White people have a much larger viewing audience than we do.

Peace,

When have we ever seen a film, written and directed by a black man, about a slave rebellion based on a true story?

No one cares who a movie was written and directed by to be real. It's about the content. And not many people want to keep going to see movies about slavery. It's like watching roots every 6 months.

Its not so much about the money or the amount of people that see it,

its about the right people seeing it and who it will inspire..

if it influences the next great, writers and directors of inspirational true history of our people thats good enough for me...

we need to show we can make moves despite hollywoods waning influence..

we depend too much on their approval...and financing..

we as a people spend billions of dollars a year just on soda alone..

no reason we cant finance our own shit...

Peace,

Thats actually one of my major points Bruh. A movie, regardless of topic is NOT considered anything successful if it breaks even or even doubles it's production costs. Adding to that, the fact that, one of the BIGGEST issues Hollywood has had with financing OUR movies, is, they don't make money (according to them, which is still the LAW, essentially because THEY control the purse strings to a point). So when you have a movie of this magnitude, with the amount of press his movie has received, to perform this way on it's first weekend, it really is going to be viewed as a bust, as a 'We Told You So' type of situation, primarily because WE aren't supporting our movie....

Not saying you, but others here, SOMETIMES we've got to get out of our feelings and engage our brains.... Unfortunately we are held to a different standard, and unless WE do better, WE will always be thought of as lesser than others, when it comes to movies being successful and be able to take away THEIR excuses from excluding us... Box Office like the one for the first weekend run of this movie won't get it.

Oh, I completely agree man. We didn't do what we needed to do to make this film a success.

I feel you on that.. but this one is different.. it shows how we didnt just sit there waiting for a white savioiur to come save us..

but you are right till this day I refuse to watch twelve years a slave or the butler.... or the roots remake...

but a film about Nat Turner.. yea I will check that out...

but we do need to evolve from the european version slave narrative...

and I think this movie is a start..

well I will know for sure by tuesday evening..

because either we together or we not man
we need all of us

I disagree..

we only need enough... all of us simply aint ready, and we cant waste time on those that havent decided what team they want to go to bat for...

we can rock the world with just ten percent of our population in collective unison....

we are that powerful, we just dont realize it...

Therein lies the problem, and has always been the problem my friend...
Also, can't have collective unison when 90% isn't on board...

How this movie a bust loses me. A person making this film intention isn't to make 100 mil on the first week. His purpose seems to me, to be to tell the story and get his point across. Nate put his own bread up to get this made. I read he spent seven years trying to get to this point. He set a goal other people believed in him and helped him on his way. Instead of trippin on how it's a bust applaud the effort it took to get it done. He didn't do this for the money although everybody wants to make some money.

We can do it.... we just need to know we can,

once the rest see the ten percent holding it down most will follow suit...
Not sure about that big guy... there has already been representation that division has entered in the 'ranks' before any unity can be fulfilled. Look at the black lives matter vs all lives matter situations. certain segments of 'our' people have already in a sense been 'brought', which is why we see so much fence straddling. I truly believe, be it athletes, or in the private sector, once a lot of our people have achieved a certain level of success or 'acceptance', their fire for change is extinguished. I've even seen it in my personal life, we are having a community empowerment summit in Camden, NJ and I've reached out to some of my business associates and colleagues to participate on different levels, and maybe 1 out of 15 or so has agreed for various, yet OBVIOUS reasons...

We are being divided from within and don't even see the cracks to the foundation of any possible growth or change...

while I somewhat agree with most of blm...

blm is not an organic response, it is funded by many folks we should not be accepting money from..

when we have a true organic evolution you will see..

its just not the time right now... and wont be in our generation..

Agreed... but it still appears we are regressing instead of progressing though....

what you meant to say is white people care more about their history than we do.

Some of you seem slow

The movie even though it was self financed was put out by a major studio

Why do we get a million comic book movies? Because they make money
Why do we get a bunch of movies with the dude with the dress? Because they make money

That's why it's important for this movie to do well. So there will be more.

For those of you complaining about the number of theaters, that's why. Theaters are also about making money. That's why you have marvel movies in 4,000 theaters, because people go see them. Smaller movies aren't going to get the same booking. Just like your local rock band wouldn't get booked in the same stadium as the Rolling Stones.

Muthafuckas have no critical thinking skills at all and only think from a short narrow minded perspective.

People invest in things they think will make money. If this movie doesn't do well do you think Nate will get another chance? Remember he is a black male, much less the negativity that has surrounded him.

So yes if you think short sighted and think he made more than the movie cost...it wasn't a bust.

I cannot improve upon these comments.

If it had major studio support from the beginning would have been progress in my opinion. Dude had to basically secure his own financing and hope it got picked up fam... And I'm not referring to progress as it relates to them, I'm referring to regression as it relates to us...

I don't think it's about coons at all. More like the slave movie/show narrative has kinda grown stale.

After ALL THESE YEARS, slavery movies just HAPPENED to go stale right when a black filmmaker created some shit about Nat Turner? That is EXTREMELY convenient.

I see progession slowly but surely but I'm a cup half full type of guy

I was at the United artists in manyunk. I felt myself saying things to the screen. I have never felt confined in my life, but I felt confined watching that movie. That movie was fucking porn for white people. I felt disgusted watching that movie.

I fucking hate that movie.

I felt the same way and couldn't understand the hype around it. Hated that movie through and through.

Amazing movie! Acting was on point, script well written, movie theater was 3/4th full and you could hear a pin drop the entire movie.

Im gonna try and take 2 young people this week.

Saw it last night in SF. Only about 30 people in there and they were majority white. I was disappointed in the movie. I felt it really didn't go into the rebellion, the planning and the aftermath. The majority of the movie was his life before the rebellion. His leadership wasn't really portrayed either. It did do a good job showing how Christianity was used as a tool though.
It was quiet as hell in there though. That was the most silence ive experienced in a movie theater.

I didn't like the film because there were too many scenes that I felt confused me. The grandmother did have a great line that struck with me though.

i've seen the movie already and the numbers will steadily rise
